Meet Katherine McIntyre's Hero, Conor Malone, from Hunting for Spring

Please give a warm welcome to Conor Malone from Hunting for Spring by Katherine McIntyre today as we sit down and see what makes him/her tick.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not saving (the world, clients, your mate)?
Promise not to tell? I mean, granted, with my puppy saving and lack of a hard heart, I’ve already destroyed the big bad reputation of hunters, but this hobby definitely garnered my father’s disapproval. Painting completely calms me down. Not going to lie, it’s a relief to paint something beautiful other than blood splatters across concrete.

What is it about your love interest Brenna that makes you crazy in a good way?

The first thing to draw me in was that smart mouth of hers. When she’s in full ice-queen mode, she could strip paint off a car with the barbs she slings. Maybe it’s the masochistic side of me, but she’s a tough survivor, and I respect that. However, what brings me to my knees are the moments when she opens up—when that rare, genuine vulnerability peeks through. She fumbles with her words, stares at the ground, and is two seconds from slitting my throat if I dared to tease her, but the first time I saw that side of her, I was smitten.

Do you sometimes want to strangle your writer? Thrash her/him to within an inch of their life? Make them do the stupid crap they make you do?

Oh hell yeah. Let’s throw her in the cage with a manticore and see how she likes it. Or wait, maybe a faceless man? Or a sluagh? The woman certainly loves tossing the most vile and disgusting monsters my way.

Favorite food?

Cheesesteak. There’s about a place every block or so claiming to have the best, but most tend to be on the excellent side and I’m happy to try them all. Something about the way the cheese and meat meld together on that roll into greasy perfection gets me every time.

Tell me a little bit about your world. What are your greatest challenges in that world?

Well, to the average human living in Philly, there’s already a fair amount of gang violence and crime to worry about. For a hunter like me, we tangle with the OTHER side of things—Unseelie fae, vampires, wights, unhinged casters…you name the monster and we’ve probably tangoed. For awhile I looked at the Philly Coven as the enemy too—kind of unsettling knowing there’s a whole group of powerful witches all working together…but lately my perspective has been shifting.

Describe yourself in four words.

Disappointment to my father. Or if that’s a bit too morose, Ass-kicker of evil monsters seems to have a better sound to it.

What do you do for a living?

Apart from rooting around abandoned houses for rampaging wights? I keep up the handyman business that’s been in my family for generations—Malone’s Repair

What do you fear the most?

Continuing my trend of daddy issues, ending up as lonely and bitter as Patrick Malone. I’ve watched my father desiccate over the years and become more hardened with hatred. I just wasn’t born that way and hope to all things holy I never will be. Sure, we’ve taken down a lot of supernatural assholes over our years, but that doesn’t mean every single creature is rotten. Lucky for me, I’ve got a gorgeous girl like Brenna by my side, who’s sure to call me on my shit if I’m ever starting to act that way.

About Katherine McIntyre's Hunting for Spring...

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Loose Id

Blurb:
Hunters are a lonely breed, and Conor’s no exception, until the day he meets Brenna. Even though she slinks in unannounced and kills the wight he was hunting down, the girl’s a mystery and he can’t get that blinding smile or those gorgeous curves off his mind. Since they’re both after the same caster who’s unleashing these monsters, he suggests teaming up, and despite her initial reluctance, the hungry way she scans him down promises something powerful.

However, her secrets have repercussions, and faster than Conor can lift his Glock, he’s drawn into the web of kidnappings and Unseelie mischief, all concealing the machinations of a darker foe—one that plans to bring Philly to ruin.

Excerpt Teaser:

Conor turned around, his hand inching for his Glock.
She sat on the countertop, one leg hanging over the edge. Long strands of dark, messy hair hung past her face, brushing her cheeks as she lifted her chin. The woman had the sort of striking features that made men gape, and Conor fell victim. Her blue eyes intensified with a curious light as she scanned him, and in the shadowy room, her pale skin took on a silver hue. Even though her dark eyebrows knitted together, lending her features a sort of stark fierceness, her pursed mauve lips softened her face.
The girl tugged on the cord of her hoodie, and her eyes narrowed. “What’s a normal kid like you doing hunting a beastie like that?” Her boots hit the ground with a thud, and she brushed her knees off, making the buckles of her cargo pants jangle.
Conor arched his brow, wiping his jacket sleeves on the wall in a sad attempt at getting rid of the wight crud. “Sweetheart, whoever trained you in magic should’ve given you the rundown on everyone you might encounter—including hunters.”
He caught the recognition flashing in her eyes, as well as the careful way she stalked around him like a panther surveying an encroaching predator.
“Well, feel free to piss off, then.” Her words were curt but not shocking. Hunters and casters shared a history of bad blood due to the chaos so many irresponsible witches caused. However, one bit of curiosity lingered within him—why had she been tracking the wight? Unless she’d created this monster.

Omara is a demon of vengeance, created to destroy humans who have harmed the innocent and bring their souls to Hell. Confined to her apartment, visited only by her friend Ghast, Omara chafes under the punishment.

A battle between two factions of beings and entities, one wanting to kill millions of humans and the other wanting to protect humanity, decimates the vengeance department, and Omara is called back to work. Something about the case strikes Omara wrong, and she chooses to try to prove Alex’s innocence. As she becomes part of Alex and Keeley’s lives, Omara also becomes more and more human. Then she learns that the accusations against Alex are part of a plot to destroy Keeley, who is far more than she seems. To protect the humans she has come to love, Omara will do anything–including sacrificing her own existence.

NOTE: This is a revised and re-edited version of my novel originally published in 2012 under the pen name Jo Ramsey.

Excerpt:

“We haven’t much choice this time,” he replied. “It’s either that or encounter a mob even angrier than the last one. And this time, if you opened your mouth, I might not be able to save you.” He raised an eyebrow. “Unless you think you can remain absolutely silent no matter what is said.”
I knew myself a little too well. There wasn’t a chance of absolute silence, especially if someone questioned me or insulted me the way they’d done the night before. “Let’s try the teleportation, then, as long as it doesn’t cost me my job.” Or my existence, since breaking yet another rule wouldn’t look good on my record.
“It won’t,” he assured me. “You’re with me.”
He gripped my hand more tightly, and before I had a chance to react, we stood in my kitchen. Even here, the noise of the crowd filtered through the windows. Apparently the demonstration had expanded to even the bad neighborhoods.
“Are they going to be at it all night?” I needed my beauty sleep, after all.
“It’s likely,” Ghast replied. “Tomorrow, you’ll be given an assignment at work.”
It took me a second to follow the change of subject. “Yeah, the supervisor told me.” I wondered briefly how Ghast knew about it, and decided I’d be better off not asking.
“Take it,” he said urgently. “Regardless of what it entails, regardless of where in the Midworld it lands you, take it. Nothing is as it seems, and the assignment will be your safe passage out of here until the situation is contained.”
“Um, Ghast?” I propped my elbows on the counter and rested my chin on my hands, blinking at him. “You’re obviously not familiar with how the whole vengeance thing works. Most assignments only take a short time. Not even a day. I’d have my ass, I mean butt, kicked halfway across Hell and back if the one I’m given tomorrow takes more than a few minutes.”
“Nothing is as it seems,” he repeated. “Your supervisor believes he is giving you the lowest assignment, the easiest one, available. He is wrong.”
“Um, okay.” I’d never seen such intensity in Ghast, and it worried me. To break the moment, I straightened up and went to the fridge to see what kinds of beverages I had. “You want anything?”
He didn’t answer. When I turned, he’d vanished. It was just like Ghast to disappear after giving me such a ridiculously cryptic bit of information.
I spent the rest of the night trying to figure it out, and had no more clues when I went to bed than when he’d said it.

Now let's take a peek into Natalie-Nicole Bates' Everything Anise....

Publisher: Torquere Press
Cover Artist: Kris Norris
Release Date: October 7, 2015

Blurb:
A Victorian-era vampire living in the modern world, Emigh Bennett’s favorite activity is watching people from the window of her little bookshop. When she spots a woman nearly killed on the street outside her shop, she rushes to her rescue, and she meets Anise.
The proprietress of a little home business called “Everything Anise,” Anise crafts one-of-a-kind perfumes all with a touch of her namesake spice, all with the power to intoxicate and delight the senses. She is smart, sexy, beautiful, and happens to be a little bit different.
Although Anise is everything Emigh could ever ask for and more, she can’t quite figure her out. Anise possesses the duality of an innocent angel and a vivacious vixen. Even if Emigh can ever peel away the multi layers of Anise to uncover the truth beneath, what will happen when she finally reveals the truth about herself?
Pages or Words: 16,200 words

Categories: Lesbian Romance, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Excerpt:
For the first time in…hell, it must be years, Emigh’s life felt bright and vibrant. Meeting Anise was the dawning of a new day. The lift she’d needed for so long.
She dared to pick up the phone that first night and call Anise. To hear that special kind of something in her voice as they spoke. To talk about everything and anything…well, not everything. She didn’t broach the subject of her sexuality—maybe not hers, but Anise’s. As a matter of fact, Anise mentioned neither male nor female friends.
Anise spoke of her passion for crafting corsets and perfume. She loved to bake. She was estranged from her family. They didn’t understand that she didn’t want to work a boring nine-to-five job, train into the city, train home again at night, exhausted. They thought she was wasting her life away, and because she wouldn’t come around to their strict way of thinking and living, she walked away from them.
Emigh admired her spunk and dedication. Smart, sweet, articulate, and she made her laugh, which was a tough thing to do. Anise was definitely a rare breed of woman.
But how long could it last?
She couldn’t tell Anise she was a vampire, let alone that she would never die.
Vampire.
How she hated the word! But until someone came up with a better one, she was stuck with it.
Of course, Anise would never believe her. No one did. Every once in a while some beautiful woman would come along, and their connection would be instantaneous…sizzling. Emigh would find herself whispering the truth to her beloved. Inevitably, the not-so-twin flame would beat a hasty retreat, believing Emigh was crazy, or a liar…or both.
Crazy and liar are never good things in a relationship.

Now let's take a sneak peek into Sean Michael's Beauty & the Beast...

Publisher: Sean Michael
Cover Artist: Kris Norris
Series: Fairytale Shifters

Book: One
Release Date: September 3, 2015

Blurb:
As a rhino shifter, Tromp knows that he’s not the sexiest beast in the world. In fact he’s clumsy and he can’t see very well, and that’s whether he’s in his human or animal form. Still, he enjoys going to the bar and watching the other shifters hooking up, especially the dancers. Then he sees a slinky kitty dancing on the little stage and he’s immediately smitten. He knows a sexy beauty like that would never go for him, but he’s happy just to watch and fantasize about what could be.
For his part, panther shifter Pepper might be gorgeous on the outside, but he knows most people see him as nothing more than a piece of meat and he’s had a hard past. There’s something in the way the big rhino shifter looks at him while he dances, though, that makes him feel special. So when his stint on the stage is over, he heads right to the rhino’s table.
Can Tromp and Pepper ignore the world’s expectations and find what they need in each other?

Pages or Words: 10,500 words

Categories: Contemporary, Erotica, Fantasy, Fiction, Gay Fiction, M/M Romance, Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Excerpt:
Tromp got his beer at the bar and made his way over to the table in the corner where he usually sat. It was an out of the way booth and afforded him a good view of the rest of the place. His thick bottle-cap glasses improved his poor vision enough that from here he could watch the pretty people hooking up—the slinky twinks finding each other or handsome older men to dance and laugh with. He was a bit too lumbering for dancing. Too clumsy and grumpy for easy pickups, too. In short, he didn’t really belong. Hence the out of the way table.
The music was loud and thumping, vibrating up from the floor, and his beer was cold. It was all he really needed after a long week of walking around the three warehouses he worked security on. He’d stay and watch for a while, then head home to the peace and quiet of his little cottage just outside the city.
Someone came out onto the tiny stage, one of the performers who danced in stretch jeans and open-front shirts. This guy had waist-length black hair, golden skin, and sharp features.
Tromp watched, utterly fascinated. He usually didn’t do more than admire the beauties who were out of his league, but there was something about this guy, something slinky and sexual that made him want in the best way. Or worst way, given that he never had a chance with the beautiful ones. Still, he could look his fill, couldn’t he? After all, that’s what the dancers were all about—looking but not touching.

Book Spotlight and Giveaway for Dragon's Eye

Talking with author Lexi Ander:

What was the Igigi War?

If you've read Surrounded by Crimson, there was the scene where Tristan came upon the depiction of the Igigi War on a cavern wall. What or who are the Igigi? Why were they fighting? What was the outcome?

The Igigi and their war was one of those vague myths that I latched onto. There were plenty of websites where people had ideas and lots of speculation but very little facts. What was thought to be factual was the term Igigi being used for the gods of heaven and Annunaki were the gods of earth. The term was penned during the Babylonian period and said to encompass their ten great gods. Sometimes the term used was synonymous with the word Annunaki but evolved to refer to all the gods of heaven. Igigi was also thought to be the younger gods, the 6th generation, who were servants/slaves to the Annunaki until they rebelled and they were replaced by the creation of humans. In the Babylonian Epic of Creation, the Igigi numbered three hundred.

Like I said, there was very little in the ways of facts, so I took Igigi to mean a group of gods and then I labeled the biggest battle between the gods as the Igigi War, a civil war that drastically changed who ruled. I'm going to do my best to generalize because I don't want to lose you to the details. Those details will be made into separate blog posts that focus on the information about the gods and their personalities. So here we go.

Tiamat and Abzu filled the cosmic abyss. Abzu fathered on Tiamat the elder deities and from the elders more gods were born creating a great havoc that annoyed Abzu to no end. He'd had enough and planned on murdering the lesser gods so he could start over. Tiamat loved all her children and went to her favorite grandchild, Enki, confiding in him what Abzu planned.

Armed with this information, Enki battled with Abzu, captured him and put Abzu to sleep in the waters under Enki's temple. Tired from the fight, Enki fell into a deep asleep next to Abzu and began to absorb Abzu's creation power. Kingu, a son of Tiamat and Abzu, had aspirations to become the ruler of the gods and he ran to Tiamat telling her consort was murdered and Tiamat loses her shit.

She created and army of gods to battle those who killed her mate. Tiamat took Kingu as her lover and bestowed upon him the Tablets of Destinies. Three clay tablets that Kingu wore as a breastplate giving him immense power and she made him the general of her army.

Meanwhile, Enki's mother attempted to wake him from his sleep because if anyone could talk sense into Tiamat, it was her favorite. But Enki was too exhausted and didn't wake. Enlil stepped up and extracted a vow from all the gods defending against Tiamat that he would be made "king of the gods" which, of course, they agreed to. With a net, arrows, club, and an invincible spear Enlil battles with Tiamat, splitting her asunder. Her ribs were made into the vault of heaven, her weeping eyes became the source of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and her tail made into the Milky Way. The Tablets of Destinies were taken from Kingu and Enlil donned them becoming the king of the gods. Even though Kingu fled, he was captured and later killed. The gods Tiamat created for the war were subjugated and in later texts they were depicted as servants.

In some accounts of the creation myth, there were a few of the lesser gods who sided with Tiamat. In Surrounded by Crimson, the God Ashur revealed that he didn't side with Tiamat and therefore had been separate from her. That was the reason he could teach Tristan the songs of the earth but the Earth didn't respond him. In his own way, Ashur seeks forgiveness through teaching Tristan and Ushna.

This is what I called the Igigi War. There was another smaller skirmish that led to the creation myth of humans… but that is another story.

Chapter One

**Ushna**

The God Ashur followed behind me carrying Tristan, whose body was battered and broken. The cry of our newborn pups preceded me. Their birth was supposed to be a wondrous occasion, but through treachery and lies, that was stolen from us. Instead of enjoying the happy moment, I feared Tristan was dying.

There was so much blood. The damage to his body overwhelmed my senses. I was afraid if I didn't keep my eyes on him, if I turned my back for a second too long, his Flame would slip away. We ran through the cursed caverns that wouldn't allow me to touch my wolf or feel the song of the earth. Ashur's harsh commands to hurry spurred me on faster but I had to look behind me, I had to see with my own eyes that Tristan was still with us, still fighting.

The scars… I couldn't care less but Tristan might. I vowed I would spend the rest of my life showing him how beautiful he was to me—but first we had to get him out into the open.

I glanced back. "Hurry, Ashur."

The corridor seemed much longer than when we'd come in. Glancing over my shoulder again to ensure Ashur followed closely, my impatience caused a snarl to rumble in my throat. Tristan's skin was a gray-blue, stark and sickly against Ashur's rich mahogany tone. With every passing moment, we were losing him.

"Please." I don't know if I begged Ashur to go faster or if it was a plea to the Gods to spare Tristan's life.

When we entered the darkened corridor carved from the bedrock, I heard Tristan sigh. For months, he'd been teaching me how to listen to the Earth and I could practically feel her rush to him. I climbed the stairs, my foot slipping on the wet step in my hurry to get outside.

The open air had never smelled so good, filling my lungs with the scents of life. My wolf stirred, frantic for our mate. I reached to take Tristan from Ashur, but he dodged my grasp, moving off to the side. His low voice had a musical tone as he chanted in a language I didn't recognize and next to him, a hole formed in the ground.

"What are you doing? You said all we had to do was get him outside!" Why was Ashur not singing the song for healing? I reached again to take Tristan from Ashur's arms. Tristan was teaching me the complex chant, but Ashur was Tristan's tutelary. He knew what to ask the Earth for and how. Why was he not begging her to save Tristan's life? She wouldn't say no. She'd never say no to Tristan because she adored him.

It took a moment for the haze of my frantic thoughts to subside enough to realize Ashur was talking and then another for me to process the meaning of his words. What did he mean he couldn't restore Tristan's health?

With rising alarm, I said, "You've been teaching him how to sing to the Earth. Why can't you do that now?"

Ashur dodged me, laying Tristan in the hole atop the dark loamy soil. Something eased in me seeing Tristan in contact with the ground, although the Earth didn't rush up to him as I'd expected. She never missed an opportunity to touch him… until now. Instead, I felt power build until my bones ached and the snakes on my chest writhed in discomfort.

Staring down, I searched for the source of the energy, sure that at any moment, whatever it was would show itself. My gaze continued to return to Tristan with his ruined eyed, his torso ravaged and gaping. Never had I seen him so vulnerable, so small, the very sight calling to the caretaker within me.

Tearing my gaze away, I confronted Ashur who was pleading with me. "I teach him the songs but She doesn't respond to me."

An ancient sadness shone in Ashur's visage but I didn't care. I had trusted him to save Tristan. Never before had I been filled with such useless rage. I didn't understand what Ashur was saying. Who was he talking about? The Earth? He was the king's tutelary, so why wouldn't the Earth answer his call?

Desperation rose up and I barked, "Why the fuck not?"

"Because I took the wrong side in a war, now I'm forever separated from Her."

What did that have to do with the here and now? What did it matter he'd lost something or someone? My Tristan was dying and all he could do was talk. Ashur's pleading gaze held mine and I suddenly understood. I glanced back down at Tristan, lying in a bed of fresh dark soil.

A grave.

"No! You cannot mean to do this. He's not dead!" I jumped into the hole; Tristan's single eye stared at me with clarity, despite the state of his body. His chest rose and fell with each labored breath. There was still time. I could save him.

With the strength of the God he was, Ashur wound his arms around my waist and easily hauled me away from Tristan.

I went mad.

I fought, screamed and begged. First Brian and now Tristan. How was I to stay behind? I pleaded with Ashur to allow me to go with Tristan. We'd travelled through the Earth together before, we could do it again. I could sing to the Earth and beg for Her help.

It wasn't too late.

Then Ashur chanted and the soil covered Tristan, taking him from my sight. I roared with fury, thrashing and clawing at Ashur's hands. I vowed vengeance for this act of betrayal. Silently, Ashur held me as I beat and wailed upon him, trying to free myself from his steely grasp. He whispered continuously, "I am sorry but this had to be done," in my ear. Tears of grief stained my cheeks and I hated him all the more because it didn't have to be like this. He had no right to take Tristan from me.

How was I to know I'd have only a few short months with him? Never once did I consider I would be left behind again. Who'd keep me grounded now? I was hollow, less than half of who I once was because two essential parts of me were missing, leaving me a mere shadow of who I used to be. What was left for me now? All I wanted was to follow Tristan.

I clenched the loamy soil between my fingers, startling at the harsh cry of a babe. One, then two, followed by a third wail of infant voices filled the silence. Each tiny bellow wrapped around me and I hung my head feeling wrung out and defeated. What would anchor me to this world, indeed?
