My Dream Cast by Nicole Givens Kurtz

Sanaa Lathan as main character, Cybil Lewis

Keke Palmer as her partner, Jane Boxer

Jennifer Hudson as Territory Alliance Agent, Anika Winsome

Erika Sawajiri as Territory Alliance Agent, Amber Lynn

FABRICATED

Nicole Givens Kurtz

GENRE:  SciFi  Mystery

Cybil Lewis, a private inspector in futuristic D.C., now The District, begrudgingly works with the Territory Alliance agents to track down an escaped violator, Nico Mars. Almost immediately, Cybil is tossed into the District's gritty underbelly of political ambition, drugs, and betrayal. This case will take her and Jane deep into the reaches of The District's notorious Sector 12, where life is cheap and currency is king. When her investigation leads back to those responsible for protecting citizens, Cybil discovers she's in danger. She's reminded once again that everything can be fabricated.

Excerpt Two:

If it’s one thing I’ve learned in my nearly forty years is this—trust your gut.

If I had, things would’ve gone much more smoothly.

Who am I?

I’m Cybil Lewis. Private Inspector licensed in The District Territory. July felt like an oven left on high. The sun’s rays rebounded off the pavement, fiberglass, and metal, back into people’s faces. An energy nightmare, certain neighborhoods suffered frequent electrical and computer grid breakdowns, leaving thousands stranded without air conditioning, automatic doors, and other necessities. Bots stopped working. Generators and recyclable batteries helped. Still the more tech-rich you were, the greater the potential for damage.

Venture outside at your own risk. Summer snatched victims into its greedy hands and swallowed them whole. Each year an ever-increasing number of people died because they became trapped in their residences without cool air when the grid responsible for controlling the electric crashed or when the generators melted.

Which was why I was leaning over the air conditioning unit when the doors to my office yawned open. In walked two women, one whom I recognized the moment her sleek, dark blonde hair crossed the threshold. I got up to meet them before they came too far into my lobby. Midwest Territory Alliance Agent Lynn stopped. Despite wearing make-up, pockmarks spoiled her attempt at flawless. Cold blue eyes stared out. She grinned, calculated, and cool.

We had a complicated history due to a shared case not too long ago. She tried to get me shot, killed, and sent to the cradle for violations I didn’t commit. The entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

You can imagine my joy at seeing her again.

Tour Stop/Giveaway: Ghosted by Lori Matsourani

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lori Matsourani will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. When her fiancĂ©’s infidelity prompts Bethany Hendren to map out a new path forward, her plans are disrupted by an unexpected encounter with Nick Dorsey, who convinces her to help search for the remains of a troubled eighteenth-century ghost. Nick is the handsome summer boyfriend who ghosted her years ago, and now he wants to rekindle their relationship.

Despite her reluctance to trust him, Bethany discovers he’s still the funny, caring person who captured her heart as a teen, but giving him a second chance is risky—it could lead to love and happiness or result in another devastating heartache.

Although Bethany wants a happily ever after with Nick, does she have the courage to trust him with her future?

Read an Excerpt

He walked toward her as though they were long-lost friends, and she half expected him to pull her into an embrace. Then she recognized the dark chocolate eyes behind the black-framed glasses and her stomach lurched.

Nick Dorsey. He’s Mrs. Snowden’s nephew?

“Aunt Margaret told me you were checking in today.”

Stunned, Bethany stepped backward, bumping into the edge of the desk as her heart thudded. A white-hot flush scorched every inch of her skin as she stared at Nick. Of all the people she could run into, it had to be the first guy to break her heart? And why did he have to be so handsome, with that bit of hair curling over his forehead and late-day stubble?

She inhaled deeply to rein in her composure, hating her can’t-catch-your-breath reaction to him, then dipped her chin in a neutral acknowledgment.

“Hello, Nick.”

His smile morphed into a full-on, lopsided grin. “It’s been ages since I’ve seen you. Ten years, I bet. Not since the summer Zach and I got our drivers’ licenses.”

Mrs. Snowden laid her hand on Nick’s shoulder. “Bethany is staying in the Howard Room. Can you help her with her bag?” Then, turning to Bethany, she said, “Come back down when you’re ready and I’ll give you a tour of the house.”

As Bethany followed Nick to the second floor, the pain, questions, and self-doubts she’d buried years ago reemerged, seeping into her belly like liquid concrete. The last thing she needed was Nick Dorsey invading her healing zone. It had taken her months to get over the summer romance they’d shared—and he’d abruptly ended—when they were teens. And even longer before she could bring herself to date again.

And now he was in her safe space.

Prologue

With a groan, Amelia Lawrence pushes away from her desk. The sun is setting outside, and since it’s late August, that means it’s about eight. The semester hasn’t even started yet.

It serves her right for taking this long to finish the syllabus; she should have gotten the jump on planning last weekend or maybe sometime in July. It just didn’t work out. For some reason, trying to make herself work on classes in the summers feels like stuffing a square peg in a round hole, with her brain being the square peg.

That’s the burnout talking, Amy, the analytical goblin living in the back of her mind tells her.

She ignores it.

She’s getting really good at that.

Amelia vaguely recalls a phase when she was better at this. She got more things done in the same amount of time. She planned her lessons, wrote her syllabi, and there was somehow still time left over to do her own research.

The sun sets over the trees at Wordstone Mansion, down by the river. Amelia can barely see it from the science building, but she can feel in an unsettled way how beautiful it would be to be there. There and not in her office, slaving away at things she should have been done with ages ago.

Her husband sent a text. It’s a video of their daughter, Francie, waving goodnight.

Guilt swamps Amelia. Her husband didn’t mean to make her feel this way, she’s sure. He gets it. He got a doctorate, too, before leaving academia for the calmer and more lucrative waters of IT consultancy. She still feels guilty.

They talk about it in oblique references sometimes, she and her husband. The burnout. The thing looming on the edges of her psyche she can barely put a name to because it means failure. The reason she’s already exhausted at the thought of teaching on Monday.

It’s not fair.

Amelia has always loved teaching.

She was one of the few PhD students in her cohort who did.

But here she is, thirty-five years old and not even a tenure-track position to show for it. Instead, she has to hope every year she’ll be somehow, magically, gifted something more permanent than a “good work this year, let’s talk about contract renewal.” Amelia barely dares to ask for a raise in those talks, only an inflation adjustment, because what does she have to offer? Her own research is stagnating, like so many zebrafish she has her students perform experiments on.

Psychology is so glamorous.

Amelia needs to learn to draw proper boundaries. Say no and mean no. Go to class with last year’s slides and no other preparation. Not be available to everyone and anyone. Take time for her own stupid zebrafish experiments. Do some writing, catch up on journals, stop living day to day.

Take her daughter to the Catskills when autumn hits the hillsides in the Hudson Valley and turns it into a glorious riot of color.

Amelia takes a deep breath.

“Just finish up tonight, Amy,” she tells herself. “Get it done and then be happier.”

She sits down at her computer again, willing herself to work through the end of the syllabus.

Immediately, an email notification distracts her. An unread message from Lily Peterson. A vague memory surfaces in Amelia’s brain, something to do with the mess last year after Professor Lombardi died so tragically. Lily was involved. Amy has a dim memory of an all-faculty email about it. She’d been seeing him, and when he died, she vanished from class suddenly and completely. Lily was on the roster of one of Amelia’s classes, a two hundred–level lecture course about…something. Neuroscience, probably. That’s the one everyone drops out of.

Amelia clicks on the email.

Apparently, Lily returned to Lobell, and she wants to know if she can still get credit for the class by retaking the final.

For a heartbeat, Amelia thinks about it. She’d have to dig into the mess of the file structure on her computer and figure out where she left the final exam. Then she’d have to schedule a time, remember how she graded the neuroscience final last fall, oversee one student taking the exam, figure out how to get the extremely late grade through the Registrar’s office, and—

No, her burnout gremlin tells her very firmly. Boundaries. Amelia’s setting boundaries this year. She won’t let it stay this bad.

Dear Lily, she writes. I’m sorry.

Diana A. Hicks

At Winterstorm Village, a record-breaking blizzard always ends in a wedding before the season is over. This year promises to bring the mother of all snowstorms, and the residents couldn’t be more excited to see who’s next to tie the knot…

Rhett Parker hates Christmas. When the Mayor of Winterstorm has an unfortunate accident and ends up in a coma, Rhett is left hanging with the proverbial Santa Gift Bag. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to make good on her promise to her dad. So, when a series of unlucky events strike, and the residents start talking about canceling Christmas, Parker does the unthinkable. She agrees to a fake date with her new boss.

Love is always in the air during the holidays at Winterstorm Village. So what if this year it’s all pretend? Or is it?

Goodreads / Amazon

Chatting with Diana A. Hicks:

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main character’s and what can we expect when we pick it up?

“Like It’s Christmas” is a fake dating my grumpy boss Christmas novel. It’s first in series in my brand-new series Winterstorm Village. There are 12 planned books in the series, all standalones.

Parker Cruz loves everything Christmas. And by love, I mean she’s obsessed. I think her parents are to blame. During their marriage, they sort of became the town’s Mr and Mrs Claus. So of course, Parker wants to keep that tradition going.

Rhett is the opposite of that. Christmas doesn’t have the same meaning for him. So when it comes to spending the town’s budget to pay for Parker’s extravagant decorations, all he sees is money wasted.

Hence their intense “dislike” for each other. The one thing they do have in common though is their love for Winterstorm Village. It’s why they’re willing to go through great lengths to make sure Christmas happens as planned.

This Christmas romance has all the steamy scenes with tons of chemistry, but also, plenty of moments that are just so sweet and Christmasy. Think Hallmark movie but with steamy, open-door scenes. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit. J

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy reading in your spare time?

I finally got on the Fourth Wing wagon. My daughter begged me to read it, and now I’m hooked. I’m hoping to find the time to read Iron Flame this month.

I don’t have a favorite author or sub-genre per se. I enjoy reading all romance as long as the characters have tons of chemistry and a love story I can’t stop thinking about…like Xaden and Violet. J

Tell us about your writing day. Do you write every day or only when inspired?

My goal is to write every day, even if it’s just a page or a paragraph. If I don’t touch the story at least once a day, I feel like I lose momentum. Then it takes a long while to get back into it. The trick to writing every day is to make space for it in my schedule. Sometimes that means getting up early in the morning or staying up once everyone goes to bed.

Which book would you recommend for readers to choose first if they’re new-to-you?

My bestseller for the past 3 years has been King of Beasts Duet. If dark billionaire romance isn’t your thing, I would recommend the Steal My Heart series which features five brothers and their friends, and it has more of a romantic suspense vibe.

What do you do when you have free time?

I write or read. I have two teenagers at home. Time just gets away from me most days. So I try to spend as much time as I can writing or reading.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

I use the GMC (Goal, Motivation, Conflict) method to get things started for a character and then I narrow it down to…Character wants (Goal) because of (Motivation), but (Conflict).

For example, in my latest release, “Like It’s Christmas,” Parker loves Christmas because if reminds her of her mom. So her GMC became….Parker wants Winterstorm Village to have the best Christmas ever because she loves Christmas but Rhett hates Christmas and cuts her Christmas budget down to a third.

Okay, not very romantic but it gets the job done. I usually take that GMC and build on it. I do that for the MMC and the villain as well.

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

I like writing books with lots of twists and turns…and also steamy scenes. My books are for readers who enjoy intense and dark situations. Except for my Winterstorm Village series, which is totally light and fluffy. After finishing The Crime Society series, I needed to write a happy book. J

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you're currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

Now that “Like It’s Christmas” is out in the wild, I’m ready to return to my roots and write my next dark billionaire trilogy. I have the series and characters fleshed out, but I haven’t written any chapters yet. I’m hoping to get started before Christmas.

I’m scheduled to announce the series in the next week or so. For now, all I can share is the tag line for the series…

While I stand in darkness, she holds the light…

Talking with Kathleen Buckley

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main characters and what can we expect when we pick it up?

Allan Everard, natural son of a baron, is dismissed from his post as assistant steward on his father’s death. Rosabel Stanbury, not quite of age, is left to the guardianship of a distant, previously unknown cousin whose motives she fears. Rosabel and her little sister flee to London, where Allan has received an odd, secret inheritance and hopes to avoid the notice of his spiteful half-brother, the new baron. There’s mystery, danger, some romance, and no steamy scenes. It’s not “wholesome”; there’s some swearing/cursing a few readers might find offensive. It’s a “traditional romance” similar to the kind Georgette Heyer wrote.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

Neither. The plot comes first, and the characters and hook follow from that. In Hidden Treasures, I think the idea came from having read novels in which the illegitimate sibling is welcomed into the family. I enjoyed those books but doubted the premise. Once I knew the bare bones of the plot, I knew what kind of character Allan would be and that the only kind of woman he could aspire to would be one who had also been severed from her connections. The hook came last.

Which of your own characters would you like to have lunch with?

John Barlicorn, the protagonist in A Masked Earl and a minor character in Hidden Treasures and several of my other novels, would be my first choice. He’s an engaging rogue with a mysterious background and a heart of gold.

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy reading in your spare time?

Lots of favorite authors! Carla Kelly, Jayne Davis, Mary Lancaster, Mary Kingswood, Susan Speers, Elizabeth Johns, Jenny Hambly, Louise Allen, Grace Burrowes, Mary Balogh…and those are just the romance writers whose books I always buy. I’m sure I’ve left out a few. For mysteries and thrillers, I prefer the older ones like Dick Francis, Robert B. Parker, and Ken Follett, among others, and the Golden Age writers like John Dickson Carr.

Which of your own books would you like to live in?

I can understand the attraction of living in a book with exotic locations, interesting/exciting activities and romance. However, my books are set in 1740s England, a period I find fascinating, but nothing would induce me to live then.

Modern sanitation was unknown. In London, the Fleet River (also known as “Fleet Ditch”) was an open sewer emptying into the Thames, and it was not the only one. Privies were emptied by “nightsoil men” who came around between midnight and four in the morning. They deposited their collection at dumps on the outskirts of town or at Dung Wharf on the Thames, to be barged away for use as fertilizer. Outside London, farmers composted their privy contents for the same purpose. I can only imagine the stench.

Then there’s the matter of medical care (bleeding for practically anything and the horrid ingredients of medicines), and no understanding of antisepsis or the cause of diseases. It is a mystery to me how anyone who had any sort of surgery survived.

The legal system left a great deal to be desired: many capital crimes, no presumption of innocence, no right to counsel, and punishments we would consider barbarous. There was almost no safety net for the poor. There were a few almshouses for the impoverished elderly or the disabled, guilds often helped their members who had fallen on hard times, parishes provided some relief for those who lived in the parish. The general attitude toward the starving or homeless was that it was their own fault for being lazy. Their last resort was the workhouse which many feared more than starving or dying of exposure.

What do you do when you have free time?

In my available time after writing, the activities of daily living, my little part time job doing legal billing and Quickbooks accounting, and three exercise classes each week, I read. It’s easy to sandwich that every day. Sometimes I test a recipe from the 18th century or Regency period. Several times a year my local Jane Austen group meets. When I have a block of free time, I visit a flea market, thrift store or antique mall.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

When I get the germ of an idea for a book, I know what major characters I need for protagonists and the antagonist, and what kind of people they have to be to play that role. I know their names and have an idea of a bit of their backstory. Then I turn them loose on the page and they develop themselves. For me, that’s the fun part of writing. I’m a “pantser” and do not begin with a detailed, chapter by chapter outline which would require trying to make each character follow the script. Their ideas are frequently more interesting than what I come up with. In Hidden Treasures, this produced a twist that turned the story on its head.

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

I write historical fiction with romance and the historical background does not take a backseat. Some historical romances sketch in the period only lightly, and sometimes, unfortunately, the characters are really just 21st century people in costume. I want my readers to feel they’re experiencing the mid-18th century in all its elegance and squalor. My characters are not all titled or privileged and don’t spend much time in ballrooms. Some of them work for a living. My fans seem to like the historical detail and that my characters’ problems are not limited to angst over their love lives.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you're currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

I’ve just submitted the book after Hidden Treasures and it’s a mystery with a thread of romance, set in the same time period. This is not a big change as all my books have had a touch of crime or legal shenanigans. The one I’ve just begun will also be a mystery, with a murder and issues of inheritance. The main characters will be a young lady who is the companion of a rather scatty older lady, and a gentleman who operates an office which is a sort of combined employment agency, lost and found, and advertiser of business opportunities.

HIDDEN TREASURES

Author: Kathleen Buckley

GENRE:  Sweet Historical Romance

Allan Everard, an earl's illegitimate son, is dismissed from his employment at his father’s death but inherits a former coaching inn. Needing to make a new life in London, he begins by leasing the inn to a charity.

Unexpectedly orphaned, Rosabel Stanbury and her younger sister are made wards of a distant, unknown cousin. Fearing his secretive ways and his intentions for them, Rosabel and Oriana flee to London where they are taken in by a women’s charity.

Drawn into Rosabel's problems, with his inn under surveillance by criminals, Allan has only a handful of unlikely allies, including an elderly general, a burglar, and an old lady who knows criminal slang. A traditional romance.

Excerpt One:

“Sir, we came to London to live with our grandfather, but he is ill, and we couldn’t see him, and our uncle’s wife didn’t believe we are his grandchildren, and now we have no place to go.”

Rosabel wished whoever he was might be able to aid them, knowing she dare not trust him, not after their encounter with the woman at the inn. He was probably a rakehell. Gentlemen did not otherwise concern themselves with females of the servant class, as they must appear to be, clad in their dusty, countrified clothing.

Blinking away her last tears, she was tempted to revise her opinion. His plain black suit, slight body, and untidy hair suggested quite another sort of man. His eyes twinkled when she met his gaze. “May I introduce myself, ma’am? Wilfred Simmons, curate, St. Giles-without-Cripplegate. If you and your sister have nowhere to stay, your situation is serious. London is a hard place even for men if they have no work and no money. A female without resources risks danger to both body and soul. Please let me assist you.”

She bit her lip. Mr. Simmons appeared to be respectable. He had a gentleman’s voice and was no more than four-and-twenty, she guessed. Beside her, Ory sniffed dolefully.

“You are wise not to be too trusting. I have friends who will vouch for me inside.” He smiled at her expression. “Ma’am, no one has ever been abducted from St. George’s Church, Hanover Square.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Kathleen Buckley writes traditional historical romance (i.e. no explicit sex). There are fewer ballrooms and aristocratic courting rituals in her books and more problems than does-he-love-me/does-he-not. Sometimes there’s humor. Kathleen wanted to write from the time she learned to read and pursued this passion through a Master’s Degree in English, followed by the kind of jobs one might expect: light bookkeeping, security officer, paralegal. She did sell two stories to the late Robert Bloch, author of Psycho. And no, he wasn’t late at the time.

After moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, she wrote her first historical romance, striving for Georgette Heyer’s style, followed by nine more.

In Kathleen’s gentle romances, the characters tend to slide into love rather than fall in lust. Their stories are often set against the background of family relationships, crime, and legal issues, probably because of her work in a law firm.

When she’s not writing or reading, she enjoys cooking dishes from eighteenth century cookbooks. Those dishes and more appear in her stories. Udder and root vegetables, anyone?

Kathleen Buckley’s current work in progress is her first historical mystery, tentatively titled A Murder of Convenience.

Guest Author Day with Laurie M. Baird: Beyond Courage Anthology & #Giveaway

Hi reader! Romance author, Laura M. Baird here, excited to be featured on Dawn’s blog.

Today I’m talking about military romance; specifically, my military romance, Surrender to Forever, in the Beyond Courage limited edition collection. This anthology consists of stories from award winning and bestselling authors, headed by Stephanie Morris.

Military romance holds a special place in my heart since hubby and I are US Army veterans. And while our service was limited, and neither of us faced hardship (as many do), we’re proud of our time and accomplishments.

We met in Savannah, GA at Hunter Army Airfield in the late 80s: my husband, a diesel mechanic, and I, an electronic maintenance personnel. My dream was to fly helicopters, but the recruiter wasn’t about to tell me I’d never make the height and reach requirements then with me being only five feet in height. But, he could get me on a flightline. And he did. Between Savannah and tours in Honduras, I worked on equipment that went into fixed-wing aircraft as well as what we called a repeater site – a lovely wooden cabin on top of a mountain. I loved it!

My service experience was fundamental to the person I am today; learning discipline and commitment and awareness and sacrifice.

Many writers take much of their life’s experiences and weave them into their stories, and I’m no exception. While I don’t base a character solely on me or another person I know, there are definitely traits from many, molded into who I hope will be a relatable character in some aspect.

In my story, Surrender to Forever, my heroine is an independent, badass who follows her dreams no matter the circumstances or demands of others. Sometimes, in spite of others. Janelle sets out to prove women are more than a pretty face. She enjoys competition no matter the venue and always strives to be the best. She loves wearing snarky t-shirts that express her personality. This is, in fact, something I enjoy as well. Sayings like: Apparently I have an attitude; Fueled by coffee and chaos; Feed me tacos and tell me I’m pretty. And those are just a few. She’s rarely in anything other than jeans and tees.

My hero is a good ol’ American boy, raised in the mountains of Idaho. Kurt’s an only child but always wanted siblings. His parents were blue-collar workers he respected. He too can usually be found in jeans and tees (patriotic ones); even in the oppressive heat of Texas where he meets Janelle. He brings the emotion to the relationship, teaching Janelle tenderness and the ability to shift focus without sacrificing the end game.

These two go through a very emotional journey, but like in all romance, they achieve their well-earned satisfying ending (HFN). Well, truth be told, it won’t be the end as they’ll no doubt make a reappearance in future installments of my continuing military romance series.

Being a part of this anthology as well as upcoming collections is an honor to be among spectacular authors. It gives me the opportunity to grow as a writer and hopefully expand my readership. I want readers to engage and relate or simply lose themselves in a story that moves them.

Many thanks for taking the time to be here. And to Dawn for all she does in the author/reader community!

Excerpt from Surrender to Forever ~ part of the Beyond Courage collection:

Janelle

“Want assistance?”

Although it sounds sincere, especially since he used want, and not snarky with the use of need, like the first three times I’ve been asked, frustration at that repeated question either makes me want to scream or turn the guy into my pack mule. Instead, I raise my head, ready to tell him to politely fuck off.

Only I’m stunned into silence when I stare into Seaman Stanley’s light blue eyes. Now that he’s front and center in my vision, I have the opportunity to see it’s truly the most appealing face I’ve ever laid eyes on. His entire aura inexplicably makes me warm and gooey inside like a fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie. You know, because they’re the best cookies in the world.

“Janelle, right?” Mr. Hometown Goodness asks as I continue to remain mute. “I, uh, I don’t want to assume you can’t handle that load, but it looks cumbersome.” His eyes shift to the massive stack of books I’m currently juggling in my arms before staring back at me. I’m then drawn to the crooked smile lifting one corner of his lips, and I can’t help but mimic the move.

Of course, I’ve seen him in classes and know his name is Kurt, er Seaman Stanley. I just hadn’t paid him, or many others for that matter, close attention. Selfish? Probably. Self-centered? Maybe. Studies come first. There will come a time when a study group is needed and hands-on, practical training forces us to work together, but otherwise it’s basically every student for themselves.

We’re barely a few weeks into Hospital Corps “A” School training in San Antonio and the pace is demanding. But I can’t and won’t complain because this is exactly where I want to be. Well, at this very minute, I’d give anything to be able to teleport back to my quarters instead of trying to negotiate campus in the July heat with my arms overflowing with books.

“Seaman Stone?” Kurt says, lifting a brow as his gaze toggles from me to the books then back again.

“Uh, yeah, help would be appreciated, thanks.”

He nods and starts to relieve me of several books, easily stacking them on an arm so they lay against his chest. And an impressive chest it is, I think to myself as I can’t stop staring. My gaze lands on the identification badge above his right breast pocket. How did I forget he was the student leader in our class? I need to focus, I chastise myself. But it’s definitely a challenge with his imposing form. He’s easily half a foot taller than me and twice as broad. I suddenly imagine his muscular arms wrapping around me, cocooning me in a strong, protective embrace.

“A little light reading, I take it?”

His question snaps me back to reality as I wonder where the hell that image came from. I don’t need any embraces from any man, especially one who could no doubt charm the panties off every female within a hundred-mile radius. Or more likely the entire state of Texas.

Realizing I hadn’t answered his rhetorical question, I shake my head and chuckle. “Hardly, as you well know. Just thought I'd get a jump on things.”

Now it’s his turn to chuckle which instantly makes my insides even gooier.

Stop. It.

“Looks like you’re getting more than a jump. Looks like you’ve already moved beyond Corps training and headed right into med school.”

“That’s the plan. Eventually.”

“Yeah?”

I nod. “Um, say, can we move out of this heat? I’m ready to melt. Hadn’t really planned to grab all these, hence thinking I wouldn’t need to bring a bag to put them in.”

“But you couldn’t resist.”

I laugh. “No, I couldn’t. I’m surprised the librarian let me take them all.”

We start walking side by side, heading toward the barracks. “Don’t think there’s a limit on reference materials you can check out.” Kurt, er Seaman Stanley eyes the remaining books in my arms. “Threw in some fiction, I see?”

Even in the oppressive heat, I feel my cheeks flare with even more warmth and a touch of embarrassment because the bare-chested man cover on the top book leaves no doubt as to what kind of fiction I’ll be reading.

“Nothing wrong with that,” he continues. “Can’t be all study, all the time. I’m into Lee Child’s Reacher novels, myself.”

“Did you watch the movies or the series?”

“Nah, although it’s hard to escape previews or snippets around the web. Wrong casting in the movie, in my opinion.”

“Which seems to be the popular opinion from what I remember reading.”

“Yeah,” he chuckles. “As for the series, that guy is more the Reacher character.”

“But you’re still not tempted to watch,” I state rather than question.

“Nope. I’d rather get lost in the book.”

I smile. “I concur.”

We continue across campus, finding no relief from the unrelenting sun. I feel sweat trickling down my temples, not to mention all the lovely crooks and crannies hidden beneath my fatigues. I glance up at Kurt who seems utterly unaffected by the heat. He looks pristine, as if he’d just showered and dressed, ready for the day.

A few more steps has us approaching my barracks, but as we round the corner, I suddenly find myself plastered against Kurt’s side with my back pressed against a wall. Apologies sound off and I hear shuffling as several pairs of boots recede into the distance.

“You okay?” Kurt’s voice rumbles through me and I lift my head to stare up at him.

“Uh, yeah. Good reflexes there. Even managed to hang onto all the books.” He chuckles while stepping back, allowing me to move. “What the heck happened? And how did you know to react so quickly?”

“Just a few students rushing around.” He shrugs. “I heard their footsteps, wasn’t sure how close they were.”

“Pretty close,” I chuckle. “Thanks, by the way. Glad I didn’t end up on my donkey.”

He laughs. “You’re very welcome. Happy to protect your donkey.”

I snort while looking around then nod my head toward the entrance. “Coast is clear.” I start for the door with him trailing behind me. Glancing over my shoulder, I say, “I’ll announce you if you don’t mind carrying those up to my room.”

“Oh, sure. That’s if you don’t mind.”

“Hell no, I’ll take advantage of you.” Realizing how that sounded, I quickly add, “I mean, advantage of your help.” He chuckles softly while I mutter, shit.

“Hey, I knew what you meant.” As we stop at the door, he leans in close and whispers, “Just for the record, you can take advantage of me anytime.”

We lock eyes and for once, I’m speechless; unable to decide if he’s joking or hitting on me. And unable to decide which I want it to be.

He straightens as his face becomes too serious. “My apologies, that was inappropriate. I’ll just deposit the books inside.” When he starts to turn, I can’t stop myself from blurting out.

“No, wait. I mean, come inside.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

He nods and manages to open the door, allowing me to slip inside first.

“Male on the floor!” I yell, alerting any female residents within earshot.

“Impressive set of lungs, Seaman Stone.”

“Thanks.” I give him a cheesy grin.
