The wait is over!

After years of tension, sacrifice, and impossible choices, Beck, Heavenly, and Seth finally reach the moment everything has been building toward. This is their hard-won, emotionally loaded, no-pulling-punches happily-ever-after—and it does not arrive quietly.

This is a read-in-order saga built on:
💥 high-stakes drama
🔥 scorching heat
🖤 kink with heart
❤️ messy, emotional bonds that refuse to play nice

If you’re caught up, this is the payoff you’ve been waiting for.

If you’re not… now is the time.

It’s the momentous day we've all been waiting for—The Commitment finally releases, delivering the long-awaited, scorching conclusion to Beck, Heavenly, and Seth's unforgettable journey!

Get ready for the ultimate payoff in love, trust, and passion—start with this exclusive excerpt below.

At the bottom of the stairs, Heavenly and Seth stopped short at the sight of Beck leaning against the granite counter, talking to Pike, of all people. He looked thoroughly disreputable and out of place in their pristine kitchen, dressed in head-to-toe black.

“Cooper,” Pike said stiffly as he turned toward them, maintaining a careful distance from Seth. Then he nodded her way. “Heavenly.”

“Pike,” Seth returned with equal coolness, squeezing her hand protectively.

“Morning, Cullen.” She tried to lighten the mood. “Coffee?”

“He was just leaving.” Beck clapped Pike on the shoulder and hustled him to the foyer. “Good to see you, man. Thanks for stopping by.”

Then, with a slam of the door, he was gone.

“What was that about?” Seth demanded the moment Beck returned.

“Club business. Pike watches everyone at Shadows, making sure they’re playing safely—”

“And putting a lot of scenes in his spank bank,” Seth quipped.

Heavenly swatted his shoulder. “Don’t put that visual in my head. Please.”

They all laughed before Beck went on. “And since Pike was here, I picked his brain for something…special.”

Seth raised a brow. “Ideas from Pike? Since that man’s idea of ‘special’ involves livestock and bodily fluids, no thanks.”

“I used his extraordinarily bent thoughts for good this time,” Beck assured, turning back to finish cooking breakfast. “I think you’ll like this. I’ll explain while we eat. Come here, little girl.”

Heavenly smiled and crossed the floor to kiss Beck’s cheek. He caught her around the waist, and the quick peck she intended became something raw and passionate that made her knees go weak.

“I need caffeine and food before any of that, mister.” She wriggled free with a grin.

They all laughed, but as they sat with their plates, Seth’s nervousness ticked up.

Beck’s sharp gaze missed nothing. He slammed his coffee mug on the table with a clatter. “Whatever’s up with you, man, spit it out.”

Seth set down his fork and heaved a long sigh. “I know this is the worst timing ever, but…” He recounted the call he’d received from his mother and her horror at finding the twins sharing a woman. “She wants me to fly back there and, um…talk some sense into those ‘deviants.’ Yes, the ridiculousness of her request isn’t lost on me.”

It wasn’t funny…but it kind of was. It was also deeply concerning. If Grace thought Jack and Connor were deviants for sharing the same girl, what would the woman think of her? Heavenly couldn’t help but fear Grace Cooper would see her as the harlot who had corrupted her son. Would the woman ever accept Seth’s relationship with her and Beck?

“So let me get this straight,” Beck drawled with characteristic snark. “Your saintly Catholic mother wants you—the poster boy for debauchery—to preach about one-man-one-woman wholesomeness? Should I start the slow clap now or wait for the encore?”

“Like I said, it’s peak irony. And completely futile. Those leopards aren’t changing their spots. I tried.”

“Of course they’re not. You gave them that speech when you caught them over the summer. It failed spectacularly.”

Seth winced. “She doesn’t know that, and I can’t tell her. She’d freak that I didn’t come clean.”

“Because if you had…the twins would rat you out about us.” Beck winced. “Gotta love it. So you’re supposed to fly to New York to tell them to ‘Just say no?’”

“This isn’t you running away again, is it?” Heavenly had to ask.

Seth’s stare snapped to hers. Hurt flashed across his features before he shook his head. “I’m not, angel. Since my mom called, I’ve been wondering how I could turn this situation to our advantage. I have an idea.”

Beck glanced her way, then raised a brow at Seth. “We’re listening.”

“If I can get Mom to admit she’d never care about her sons any less for being with whoever they love, that any grandchildren would be welcome no matter the circumstances… Maybe I can lay the groundwork for her to accept us.”

Relief swirled with hope in Heavenly’s chest. Not that she wanted Seth to leave or for the twins to be out of their mom’s good graces, but he was onto something. “That might actually work. Appeal to her heart.”

Seth’s voice carried conviction now. “Exactly. It won’t be easy, and her attitude won’t change overnight. But Mom asking me to come fix this situation could be a blessing in disguise.”

Beck pondered Seth for a protracted moment. “All right. But you come home to us. No matter what happens back there.”

“I will. I told her I’d fly out on Tuesday, but I have to be back by the weekend.” Seth lifted her hand and pressed his lips to her palm.

Heavenly felt a flutter of relief in her belly. His words melted away some of her lingering concerns.

“Good thinking,” Beck said, pushing back from the table. “My thoughts were on a similar path. That’s another reason I called Pike this morning and asked him to stop by. I wanted to arrange something special for us tonight. A celebration. Well, a spicy one.”

Heavenly’s pulse quickened. “What are you up to?”

With a wicked grin, he reached under the table. “All the ways I’m going to make you beg later, but I digress. This is an adventure. Can you two get free this evening? We need to leave about an hour before dusk.”

Maybe Heavenly shouldn’t be, but she was excited. “I just have to study some and finish a paper, but it won’t take all day.”

Seth shrugged. “I’m going to do my laundry for the trip and touch base with River, let him know I’m jetting out. Other than that, I’m good. So…you going to tell us what you have in mind?”

“Nah. But I think you’ll really enjoy it. We all will.” Beck’s eyes glittered with mischief as he looked at Heavenly. “I suggest you rest up today. Oh, and I hope you can run.”

Synopsis

Brady Sampson and Myer Joyner met in college, quickly bonding in their business classes and both landing gigs at nearby Global Initiatives in scenic Lost Lake, Tennessee. Combining their signing bonuses to invest in a rental house beside the lake together, the two take to being roommates the way they have every other challenge they’ve faced over the past two years -- secretly pining for one another while never speaking a word about it.

That is, until their sexy new coworker, Carly Carmichael, produces an uncommonly sensual stirring in both men. When Brady invites their new neighbor over for a meet and greet, she takes him up on the offer on the one day he’s out. While she and Myer sip wine and get to know each other better, both let it slip that they have a crush on Brady, unleashing a series of events that threaten to topple everything they thought they knew about each other.

“White or red?”

Brady Sampson glanced over at his new roomie, Myer, holding up two wine bottles and wearing an almost face-splitting grin. He struggled to ignore the equally cataclysmic ripples of desire that rang through his body as he kept a placid look on his face.

“Which do you prefer?” Brady answered.

Myer glanced from bottle to bottle as if he’d never seen them before, giving Brady time to openly adore his big, veiny hands as he held each aloft. “I always drank beer before now.”

Brady chuckled, never less than amused by Myer’s vaguely off-kilter outlook on life. “So why don’t we grab some beer then?”

Myer wrinkled his nose, nostrils flaring under a spray of cheery soft freckles to go with his mop of strawberry blond stubble. “I dunno, this seems so grown up right now, you know?”

Brady steered his own shopping cart closer, inching into the liquor aisle to join his new roomie. “Beer is grown up,” he suggested, studying the labels next to the shelf where Myer lingered. “And cheaper, too.”

Myer gave him a “spoilsport” frown but set the bottles back just the same. “Dude, you’re not going to be one of those cheap-ass roomies who puts his food on one shelf and mine on the other and pro-rates the rent if I happen to steal a grape or two, are you?”

Brady chuckled. “No, of course not. I just don’t really feel like paying for stuff I’m not going to drink, you know?”

Myer considered this as if he’d never thought of it before. “Valid point, I suppose.” His big fingers did unspeakable things to Brady's already lurid imagination as he moved down the aisle, touching several brands of champagne. “Bubbly then?”

Brady nodded, as if equally inspired. “That’ll work,” he agreed, taking one of the two bottles from Myer’s hand.

“Hey!” Myer’s youthful face -- oh yeah, he was definitely getting carded, for sure -- broke into a surprised grin. “I thought I was in charge of alcoholic beverages this time.”

“You are, but that doesn’t mean you’re paying for it all.”

Myer’s gaze quickly assessed the running total of Brady’s half-full shopping cart. “You’re paying for the steaks already, though.”

“Cuz they come in a two-pack. You want me to tear them in half and get the butcher to rewrap them?”

Myer frowned, looking effortlessly casual in a mustard-colored V-neck and striped blue Madras shorts, the clothing seeming to hang off his lean, rangy frame the same way his shirt and ties did at work every day. “Fair is fair, though.”

“Now who’s the cheap one? Huh, Myer?”

Myer glanced at his own cart, only slightly less full than Brady’s. They were facing each other in the liquor aisle, carts side by side, just two bros out shopping like any other two bros out shopping. And yet, to Brady at least, the seemingly humdrum errand had such an intimate feel to it he had to struggle to keep from sweating.

“I mean,” Myer teased, nudging Brady’s elbow with no idea of what that little tremor from his touch felt like racing through Brady’s body. “Have you seen the price of yogurt lately?”

Brady snorted, romantic reverie suddenly broken. “No, Myer, because I’m not a retired housewife on a diet.”

They chuckled together, drifting onto the next aisle and quibbling over potato chips and pretzels like an old married couple. Brady struggled to keep things light when all he wanted was to reach out and grab Myer’s hand and cling to it like they were an actual couple.

He swallowed the desire, as he had all his life, and played it cool instead. Said the right things. Glanced Myer’s way just long enough, but never too long. Walked just close enough to him as they argued over wheat bread versus rye, and never too close. Laughed just hard enough, smiled just wide enough, sending all the right signals like he always had.

He'd leapt at the chance to room with Myer when they both got transferred to the Tennessee branch of Global Initiatives after their internship at the corporate offices in Latham, Georgia. They’d hit it off as interns, sharing lunch breaks and chatting it up in the campus gym after weekend workouts. Brady thought it would be the perfect way to solidify their friendship, even if he knew they could never be more than that. He thought he could be strong, thought he could fight the temptation, thought it would be easy, like it had been back when they’d just shared a cubicle.

But now? Sharing a sprawling house out on secluded Lost Lake, shopping together, padding barefoot down the same halls in various stages of undress? Suddenly Brady wondered if he was strong enough to weather the ups and downs of living with someone who only wanted to be friends.

When obviously, achingly, frustratingly, Brady wanted to be so much more.

Excerpt

There are few things better than waking up with a raging post-fuck hard-on. One of these is to wake up with a warm mouth surrounding said erection. Unfortunately, on that particular morning a head job was not on the breakfast menu. The events of that particular morning are seared into my brain, etched indelibly in blood.

It was ten a.m. on a Saturday. After a long night of fucking my brains out, I awoke with, in addition to a full-fledged erection, a slight hangover and aching body. My thighs and abdomen complained as if I'd spent a long hard session in the gym. In effect, I had. I'd fucked -- and been fucked -- in every conceivable position for most of the night.

I settled deeper beneath the bed covers and looked forward to a playful day in bed involving plenty of sucking and fucking. My cock throbbed at the notion, and I wrapped my hand around it. I winced. It was a little sore, and that brought to mind not just my sensitive cock and tender asshole, but the cause of that delightful discomfort.

Max. Max Detroit.

Speaking of whom, where was he? To my relief, sounds of movement came from the lounge room, followed closely by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, so I settled contentedly back into my pillows. I breathed deeply. Max was everywhere; his heady aura mingled with the pungent aroma of come. Lots of come. He had an intoxicating scent, sweet and bitter at the same time. It made my head spin.

Max Detroit.

Wild images of last night's indulgence populated my mind. I put those images in order, starting from our meeting at a swanky mid-town restaurant for a late night supper. Max had been wearing a perfectly cut tuxedo. He'd been to a fundraiser and, as usual, looked absolutely stunning. He was a beautiful man: tall, athletically big with wide, coat hanger shoulders, a deep muscular chest, and powerful thighs his clothes could not disguise.

My cock had throbbed with lust just at the sight of him. We'd engaged in small talk over a bottle of red wine and the most exquisite meal I'd ever eaten. Then it was back to my place. We'd barely made it through my apartment's front door before we were ripping off each other's clothes.

I relived the visual and tactile memories of undressing him: sliding my hands along his muscled flanks, lifting the coat off his shoulders, popping the buttons of his silk shirt, and impatiently unzipping his trousers. Those images were quickly replaced with more erotic memories of sucking his huge cock, and him sucking mine while cupping my ass cheeks and fingering my asshole. We left piles of clothing from the front door to my bed. There was a whole lot of kissing, tonguing, and licking each other's salty flesh, and then the liberal application of lube and bam!

Fuck, it had been a good night.

I was a uniformed cop back then. I had plans to sit my Detective exam and hopefully get into Homicide like my friend and partner, Mai Lin. She'd scarcely changed into her tailored suit before being transferred to the FBI. Unfortunately, my big plans for advancement through the force were not to eventuate -- though I didn't know it then. Max was descended from European aristocracy and a much-loved philanthropist. He wasn't just a representative of old money. He was also an accomplished academic from the University in Paris, his specialty being medieval economic history. Max was a brilliant young man. Not even thirty, he conducted himself with the grace and dignity of a much older man.

We'd met at a City Hall gala event. He was the guest of honor, and I was working traffic and crowd control. He looked absolutely gorgeous, all decked out in a tuxedo that fit him like he'd been born to wear it. I can't say it was love at first sight -- that would be plain silly -- but I admit I developed an immediate crush on him. I remember thinking he wasn't just anybody, that there was something about him that marked him as anything but ordinary. He moved with such casual grace, and he greeted people with genuine affection and warmth.

When that anti-something or other protester lobbed a balloon at him, I didn't have to think. I just leapt in front of him and intercepted the missile, getting showered with a quart of pig's blood in the process.

Later, Max had come down to the station house to thank me. That doesn't happen too often. Celebrities generally took it for granted that uniforms weren't really human. We were simply there to stand between them and the ordinary people. As he shook my hand, he held my gaze with those incredible turquoise eyes, and when he finally released me, his business card was in my palm.

It took me two days to get up the courage to call him. A newspaper story reporting he was departing the country was my motivation. I couldn't let him leave without... Well, I didn't have any plans apart from lurid fantasies involving kissing his full aristocratic lips.

I'd been so nervous when I called him, just like a college freshman hitting on his first guy -- which I wasn't. Max was actually my second. We met for a drink, and he put me at ease without even seeming to try. I was enamored by his French accent, and the seductive melody of his speech. We made all the usual small talk people make on a first date, but through the banality of all that, he seemed to look on me with genuine affection.

For all his innate calmness, I sensed that there was a hunger within him. A hunger for sensation, excitement, and even danger.

And oh, that first kiss. I can still feel it. Even today I can feel that first touch of his firm lips upon mine. Then I surrendered to the urgency of lust, his tongue exploring my mouth, his wide hands stroking my thigh.

Max was a consummate lover. He knew how to coax out of me any uncertainty. He knew all the right places to kiss, to touch, to stroke. He was experienced, to be sure, far more experienced than me. After all, I'd only kissed one other guy before. I was reasonably confident with women since I'd bedded a dozen or so by that time, but men were relatively new to me.

Despite my inexperience, it was the best sex I'd ever had. The sheer size and weight of his cock was a jaw dropper. I really doubted I could fit it in my mouth, let alone in my asshole. But from the start Max was so gentle and patient. I'd confessed to him my naivete, but he didn't make a thing of it. At no stage did I feel he was going through the motions with a clumsy inexperienced lover. He was passionate and caring. He made me feel so very important, completely loved, more than I could have ever wished for.

That morning, as I ran my hands over my body, reliving Max's touch, I noticed little bite marks, nips really, on my chest near my nipples. I remembered how playful he'd been last night, each little bite making my cock give a throb of pleasure. It throbbed again. I wanted him then and there.

I wondered where he was and what he was doing, and suffered the sudden irrational dread that he would leave without saying goodbye. I feared I hadn't been up to his expectations in bed, that I'd disappointed him. I'd wanted so much to please him. I don't think I could have borne that kind of failure.

There came a sizzling from the kitchen as fat hit the fry pan. Breakfast! Not only was he a great fuck, but he seemed domesticated as well. My stomach growled. I was ravenous.

I decided to surprise him. With my erection preceding me, I padded naked out to the kitchen. However, he wasn't there. In the fry pan on the stove, a slab of pink bloody meat was sizzling. I didn't recognize what it was, but I spared little thought on it. I wanted to give Max a kiss and maybe a quick suck before breakfast.

I found him in the dining room, sitting naked on the rug. I crept toward him, hoping to playfully surprise him. I was thinking how beautiful he was, and how lucky I'd been to have fucked him.

It was a moment before I realized Max was eating something...

Synopsis

Love is the greatest shape shifter of all.

Love can be humanity's greatest strength -- or our biggest weakness.

The poet William Blake knew this, and for the longest time I felt as though I'd been born into his Endless Night, my life destined for eternal misery. Tragedy stalked me with the persistence of an insatiable tiger: the death of my mother, my mistaken belief I had caused the death of my partner, Detective Mal Blake, the betrayal by Anton, my lover of three years, and his subsequent death at the hands of a demon of the worst sort.

But then, out of nowhere, Mal returned to me, and with him came Tommy, a divinely beautiful shifter. For almost half a year we've been inseparable, a threesome in every meaning of the word.

My name is Ciara Callaghan. I'm a cop, and I thought I'd seen love from both sides, seen both the best and the worst it can do.

I was wrong.

The worst is yet to come.

Publisher's Note: Although this story can be read as a standalone, the characters were first introduced in Endless Night, then appeared in Realm of Night. The books are understood best when read sequentially.

I used to love poetry. Now I don't trust poets as far as I can spit.

They tantalize us with seemingly profound thoughts and evocative images, beguiling us, fooling us into believing they know something about the human condition. Now I think they are as ignorant and scared as the rest of us, arranging their pretty words not to reveal the secrets of life, but to quell their own deep disquiet.

I wondered, as I gazed at Tommy's lacerated chest, what would the poets make of that? My eyes lingered on his erect cock with barely controlled lust. He was beautiful, not just physically, but spiritually as well. He was an honorable man, brave, thoughtful and wise in a nerdy way. I was so lucky to have him in my life. That he lay there so close to death broke my heart.

I guess the poets have expended many words on the subject of broken hearts, but to me, at that moment they were just empty platitudes.

Since I was a little girl my favorite poet has been William Blake, mainly because of his references to animals, "Tyger Tyger" and all that. Not a surprising choice for a shifter, and his words had seduced me with their hints of dark and mysterious knowledge. He was deeply spiritual, and the religious underpinnings of his writing escape me, but I sometimes wondered if he was a shifter himself. He seemed to have an affinity with wild creatures, and for most of my life I believed he knew our souls.

For the longest time I'd felt as though I'd been born into his Endless Night; my life destined for eternal misery. Tragedy stalked me with the persistence of an implacable tiger: the violent death of my mother, my mistaken belief I had caused Mal's death, the betrayal by Anton, my lover of three years, and his subsequent death at the hands of a demon of the worst sort. But then, out of nowhere, Mal had returned to me, and with him came Tommy, this divinely beautiful shifter.

I dragged my eyes away from his beautiful but tortured body, and tried to think more positive thoughts.

Never in my life had I known such happiness. That I could attract the love of two exceptional men had not been in my stars; not by a long shot. Sure, we'd been busy killing demons along the width and breadth of the entire country, but we always found time for passion, and we often joked we were "fucking like demons." It kept us sane. I thought my life had turned around, and I'd been blessed with the poet's blessed state of Sweet Delight.

Then, slowly at first, things began to change. Mal became distant, quiet and secretive, so that sometimes it felt like just me and Tommy, though there were three of us in the bed. His participation in our lovemaking lacked enthusiasm. Sure, his cock was hard when I sucked him, and when I climbed on top he went through the motions, but no longer with the passion I'd craved for the three years he'd been gone. It was as if he was somewhere else, thinking thoughts that Tommy and I could not share.

That widening gulf between us hurt like a claw raking through my breast.

Mal had been more and more distant in the fortnight before we'd tracked down Sheldon Hicks. Since the battle in the warehouse, I'd hardly seen Mal. He was out hunting demons, and no, I couldn't go with him. Someone had to stay and watch Tommy.

I gazed at Tommy's torn flesh. He'd been ripped open from neck to crotch. There'd been so much blood. The sound of my own screams, begging Mal to help him, still echoed in my dreams.

After Mal had dispatched the demon, he'd seen us, and with effortless strength, he'd scooped us up into his arms and carried us to our car. He'd driven us to Doctor Fraser, the so-called "shifter healer" who'd originally saved Tommy years ago when Mal, then a humble detective, had found him lying by the side of the road.

Doctor Fraser had patched him up this time as well, and after a week where Tommy's life had hung in the balance, he'd let us bring him home.

That was three weeks ago.

Watching him made me think of how scared I was he would die, how alone I would be if he left me. Each moment was so precious. It mirrored the abject despair I'd experienced when I'd thought Mal was dead.

I thought about all the time we'd been together... a short six months... so many moments joined together. Like knots tied in a piece of string, one thought led to another, and inevitably turned to memories of my mother. She'd been a tortured soul, and we were always on the run from something. I was born in Louisiana, spent my infant days on a tuna boat in the Pacific, happily raised in Australia, and then returned to the United States when I was ten after Mother's brutal murder. Apparently one of her adventures on the wrong side of the law had gone seriously wrong.

Now Mal was distant, and Tommy was so badly injured, I wanted this all to be over. I wanted to be happy again, like I'd been on the golden Australian beaches...

Synopsis

Aurora Monroe has detailed plans for her life -- and not one of them includes being barefoot, pregnant and under the thumbs of two decidedly alpha males. But what's a girl to do when she has two sexy shifters both trying to claim mating rights?

When two paranormals on opposite sides of the war save an injured human, they unintentionally mark her as their wife. Bonded by blood, fire and passion, the gryphon and phoenix shifters do everything they can to keep their new human mate safe.

Getting her to go along with the plan is a different matter. She has no intention of following their orders. Found in defiance of both human laws and paranormal traditions, the battle for their rights turns into a fight for their lives.

Sex between a human and her two shifters can be spectacular, but is it worth risking everything for a chance at forever?

"Paranormals are just like us. They deserve equal rights, equal status under the law, and no less than our full understanding and cooperation!" I watch from the outskirts, close enough to hear, but not a part of the crowd. A smattering of applause greets the pretty redhead as she finishes her speech on the stairs in front of the white columned government building.

A heated, spicy tingle warms my body as she steps down, her nipples tight and visible in the oh-so-proper sweater she wears over a blouse against the chill wind. Staid, gray slacks demurely outline her curvy figure. Mmm. Definitely my kind of woman... proper on the outside, but all fiery and full of fight on the inside.

Only a few dozen people brave enough to show up for the rally now stand in the square. It's mostly your typical malcontents and troublemakers, but there are a few who look like they might actually give a damn.

I can't decide whether the woman has balls of steel or is dangerously naive. More than likely, a little of both. A tall, unkempt man makes his way to the front of the group, standing on the concrete base of a light pole like a monkey, spouting obscenities and tossing crap about how humans are better than paras. The crowd grows, becoming restless as the man yells, gaining the attention of the cops outside City Hall.

I stay in the shadows of the storefront across the street, where I can watch without being seen. Easier said than done most times, but I've gotten good at it. Most of us have. Coming out as a paranormal isn't a fashionable, celebrity thing to do anymore. It's a life sentence. The government took care of that. So much for equality.

I'm Varick Gerard. Used to be a paramedic, but now I'm labeled a criminal. Just because I'm a shifter, I was legally forced out of my profession, my home, and the comfortable life I once lived. Phoenix shifters aren't inherently evil. Given the choice, I'd rather save lives than take them. I don't like to fight. While some of the other paras here live for nothing else, it just isn't my thing. I don't steal, I don't destroy things, and I don't kill people unnecessarily. I may have lost everything else, but I still have my principles.

Me, I'm a loner. It's a phoenix thing. Most of us are. I don't mind being around people, I'm just not into long-term commitments. Sex? Yeah, I'm definitely into that. I can burn up a bed like nobody's business. And that woman up there -- she'd be right at the center of my pyre of passion on most days.

But not today. Something's in the air, I can feel it. I've been chased out of more cities than I can remember, just because I choose to survive. What's left of the local police force musters in front of the building. Riot shields and batons at the ready, the leader shouts into a megaphone for the crowd to disperse. Chaos has a strong following in this town.

The cops advance in a restless, unsteady line -- a phalanx of toy human soldiers pitting themselves against the evil paranormals. Same shit, different location. That isn't what's bothering me, though. There's something else, just on the edge... It's like I can almost feel it, taste it, but it keeps slipping past me.

"Hey, phoenix-dude, come on! The goon-squad is coming out to play." A short, pimply vampire pauses, motioning for me to join the unruly mob gathering in the shadows, waiting for their chance to pick someone off.

He's annoying -- hangs around all the time, always trying to get me to kill something with him. I think he just wants to see what a phoenix can do. Lucky for him, I'm not really a joiner. "No thanks, I'm heading out. Good luck with that."

He shrugs and sprints off, his fangs standing at attention and ready to rumble. Idiot. Time to leave this burg. I don't need the cops on my ass or any more problems than I already have. It's not worth the trouble.

A woman's annoyed yell yanks me to attention. "Leave me alone! I haven't done anything wrong!" The redhead struggles against one of the officers, landing a solid whack on his neck where the protective gear doesn't protect.

My smile fights to break free -- the girl's a fighter, all right.

"Submit willingly, Miss, and you'll just be charged with disorderly conduct."

The cop doesn't look old enough to have graduated high school, let alone wear a badge. He can't seem to decide between juggling his shield, going on to a more willing arrestee, or grabbing his cuffs and taking his chances against the wildcat.

My bet is on the girl.
