BLURB:
A rigged horserace and a marriage offer riding on the outcome. When Miss Eliza Montrose unexpectedly becomes legal owner of the horse tipped to win the East Anglia Cup, her future is finally in her hands – but at what cost?

George Bramley, nephew to the Earl of Quamby, will wager anything. Even his future bride.

Miss Eliza Montrose will accept any wager to be reunited with the child she was forced to relinquish after an indiscretion — even if it means marrying a man she does not love.

But with her heart suddenly engaged by handsome, charming Rufus Patmore who has just bought a horse from her betrothed George Bramley in whose household her son lives as a pauper child, the outcome of the wager is suddenly fraught with peril.

**This is book 3 in the Scandalous Miss Brightwells series, though it can be read as a stand-alone.

Excerpt:
This excerpt begins after Eliza has just plunged into the lake to rescue three drowning children and their nanny. Having dragged them – and herself – to shore, she makes a shocking discovery.
Chapter Two
Eliza had forgotten what it felt like to enjoy a man’s attention. He’d started to dry her in a vigorous attempt to warm her but then his touch gentled and he simply stared down at her.
The wonder in his eye as he murmured words of praise was a rare sensation. Embarrassed, she turned away. Yes, turned away because she could not afford to be so obviously disquieted by another man when she was affianced to George Bramley who stood a few feet away from her. He was also staring but there was no softness in his countenance.
Hoping to avoid any more gestures of admiration or kindness from Mr Patmore, Eliza politely extricated herself and put out her hand to arrest the progress of the Foundling Home lad whom Nanny Brown was pursuing with a piece of dry linen.
His impish grin reminded her of young Miss Katherine’s, Lady Fenton’s daughter. Clearly the two had had a great adventure unlike Young George who was lying on his stomach upon the grass, shaking with sobs.
“Did you drink a lot of water, Young George?” Eliza asked, looking down at the crying boy but he ignored her. “I said we shouldn’t go out! I said!” He pounded his fists. “No one ever listens to what I say!”
Eliza shared a wry smile with the rather lovely Mr Patmore whom she found still staring at her but, as he looked about to approach her again, she turned her back on him and instead brought the Foundling Home boy to stand in front of her now that she’d succeeded in catching him. Eliza would not have Mr Bramley – or anyone else – accuse her of encouraging the attentions of a man not her betrothed.
“Jack – that’s your name, isn’t it? Well, you’ll have something to tell them back at the Foundling Home.” She’d seen him only from a distance and now, mud bespattered and with his hair matted over his forehead it was difficult to make out his features though she knew from various anecdotes that young Jack distinguished himself for keeping Miss Katherine’s wilfulness in check and peace between Katherine and her cousin, Young George.
Jack stood obediently before her as he started to wring out his threadbare shirt. “Nah, I’m fine, m’lady,” he said, glancing up to reveal a pair of small white teeth in a freckled face. “But thanks for savin’ me, an’ all.”
Eliza was about to let him go. Releasing her grip a second later might have changed the course of her life, she thought later that evening, and perhaps it would have been better if she had. Why repeat the trauma she’d already experienced?
But for now she was acting on instinct and instead of letting him go when it would have seemed natural, her grip on his wrist tightened while the air in her lungs disappeared, and she had to open and close her eyes three times before she was ready to believe what she saw.
“Gideon?” There seemed still no air to say his name. A great pressure was building in her head. Finally she was able to gasp in a breath, forcing herself to resist the urge to draw him into her embrace and wail her joy.
And pain.
How many other boys of seven years sported a tiny extra claw on their left hand? Or had been thrust into the cold, unloving world of the Foundling Home, she thought bitterly.
He stopped what he was doing to look at her uncomprehendingly and she added faintly, “Though that’s not what they call you, of course.”
An amused look crossed his face, making him look older and wiser than his seven years. Nearby, the weeping and wailing George was a puling infant. Smiling at her was a little man.
He pushed out his chest and said in a tone that was neither boastful nor self pitying, “There’s some ‘at call me Devil’s Cub, or bastard, but at the manor here they call me Jack.”
Devil’s Cub? The sixth finger accounted for the nickname, of course.
“Miss Montrose?” In the distance, Lady Fenton was calling her. Eliza was suddenly shaking like one suffering the ague. “Jack,” she repeated in a whisper, still staring at him as she clenched her own fists. Was the child tormented by his deformity? It looked as if not much troubled him though Eliza couldn’t remember how many times Eliza had been told the sixth finger was God’s punishment upon her bastard babe.
“Miss Montrose! Come away! Susan is waiting in the house with a warm bath and blankets. You must be chilled to the bone!”
Vaguely, she could hear the sounds of concern all around her but all Eliza could focus on was the impish face before her: that of her lost child.

Author Info:
Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist.
Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.
Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.

Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.

Jethro’s lips kicked up in a sly half-smile at her sudden movement. It was like he knew he was getting to her and he enjoyed that knowledge immensely. “There’s no way you’re not from the city. Nashville or Knoxville, maybe,” he murmured, before shaking his head.   “Nah, I’m bettin’ you came in from Atlanta.”

“How…how did you know that?” Orla stuttered, her eyebrows furrowing with consternation.   Just what she needed in her life - an intelligent jackass.

“That fancy hair.   Your pretty dress. Those shiny shoes that, if you look, you can see your reflection lookin’ back. And those heels of yours aren’t scuffed, so you’ve been riding, not walking. Your clothes are too wrinkled to be from Nashville or Knoxville, so you’re just rumpled enough to have gotten off the bus from Atlanta,” he surmised, with a know-it-all grin as her cheeks reddened with embarrassment. “Oh, yeah!   You’re city bred from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. And a fussy little lady like you ain’t gonna find what she’s lookin’ for in Paradise.”

“Actually, son…” Jethro’s mother began to hedge, biting her lip as she turned to look up into her son’s face. “She has found just what she’s been missing.”

Biting her lip, Orla winced as Jethro frowned at his step mother. The woman, however, didn’t look overly worried about her son’s imminent reaction and she wondered if things would work out alright after all.

Jethro frowned.   “Mother McKinnon, we don’t have time for…”

“Oh, just rip the bandage off, Lydia,” Nellie ordered, interrupting Jethro as she bustled over to where they all stood together. “Jethro, meet your future wife,” the waitress decreed, flapping a hand at where Orla stood, nose to chest with him. “Take a minute and let this settle in your bones, boy.   Your much beloved step-momma done went and ordered you up a bride for hire.”

Luis’ mother turned to him and took his hand with her cold one. Her beautiful blue eyes sought his, and she visibly took a deep breath. “I have to tell you something. Please hear me out before you say anything.”
Luis swallowed hard. What would come now? His hands were clammy, but he could only wipe one on his jeans as his mother still held the other. Luis stared at her face and tried to figure out what was wrong. Something bad happened. Something really bad. Blood pulsed in his ears while he waited for his mother or father to speak again.
“The Vampire King from Munich visited us yesterday. He had a proposal for us. His son, Gerome, needs a mate. He’s seen the picture of you at the coven meeting from a few months ago and thinks you’d be a good match. The prince is going to take over the crown soon, and he needs a mate by his side. You, to be specific.” His mother paused and tightened her hold on his hand. “I agreed. A mating to the prince will bring a lot of power to our coven. And the king paid us a good deal of money for the match.”
“You what?” Luis yelled, trying to pull his hand back, but his mother held him tightly. He jumped up from his seat and tried to yank away from his mother’s grasp. What the fuck were they thinking? They had to be kidding. He was not going to mate some guy he never met. They were totally crazy. Nuts.
His mother didn’t relent, firmly keeping his hand in her grip.
“Let me go! I won’t mate someone you picked! What do you think you’re doing?” His voice cracked, but his mother didn’t even flinch.
“Calm down. You knew this was coming. Everyone gets mated. It’s the way things are done,” his mother said calmly, even though her fingers still dug into Luis’ hand. It hurt, but he couldn’t focus on that now. He needed to get away before they married him off. His mind raced, turning over possibilities. He couldn’t simply mate someone. What if he ran away and hid? Would one of his friends help him to lay low? If the king wanted him as a mate for his son, would hiding help at all? Or would they find him?

Book Spotlight~ Scotty Cade's Knobs

Book title:  Knobs
Author:  Scotty Cade
Publisher:  Dreamspinner Press
Release date:  April 22, 2016-01-31

Buy at:

Angus Conrad (Gus) McRae is a privileged Charlestonian following family tradition and attending the Citadel, harboring big dreams of a military career. With the infamous hell week behind him, he quickly realizes being a Knob (a freshman cadet) is just as tough—especially for a man like Gus who must keep his sexuality a secret. Then a sudden dorm reassignment places him in a room with one of the football team’s top players: working-class jock Stewart Adam (Sam) Morley—and life gets increasingly complicated.

Gus can’t imagine a man like Sam as gay, yet there’s something between them—exchanged glances, the occasional innuendo. Sexual tensions rise, leaving them more than friends but less than lovers. Gus and Sam know there’s too much to lose and they must keep their attraction hidden. If they fail, they risk destroying their hopes and dreams for a prosperous future in a military world that’s not yet ready to accommodate masculine gay men.

Excerpt:

“Are you gonna come in and close the door behind you?” Gus asked sarcastically. “Or are all the cadets going to get to see me in my underwear?”

Sam was sort of standing there more for effect than anything, but his eyes were glued to Gus’s body. His stomach was ripped, and the muscles in his thighs were visible through the legs of his boxer briefs.
“Okay,” Sam said. “If I close the door, will you at least talk to me?”
Gus shook his head. “I really don’t think you want to hear what I have to say right now.”
“I think you’re wrong about that,” Sam said, stepping in and allowing the door to close behind him.
Sam removed his cover and tossed it onto his bunk. He was tired of this cat-and-mouse game. Instead of untying his shoes, he brought his left foot up and tugged at his shoe until it came off. He tossed the shoe into the bottom of his locker, making quite the thud, and removed the right one much the same way.
He turned and rested his hands on his hips. “Are you gonna talk to me now?”
Gus didn’t respond. He went to his closet, removed his toiletries bag, and headed for the door. Sam took two steps forward, put both hands on Gus’s shoulders, spun him around, and backed him up against the door.
Their faces were so close Sam could feel Gus’s warm breath against his face.
Sam slammed one hand against the back of the door while leaving the other one on Gus’s shoulder. “Fuck, Gus! Yell at me. Curse me out. Do something. Don’t just give me the silent treatment. You’re not leaving this room until you talk to me.”
Gus smiled incredulously. “So, what? You’re gonna hold me hostage now?”
“If that’s what it takes,” Sam said.
“Fine! You want me to talk? Here goes. You are the most selfish bastard I’ve ever met. You’ve treated me like shit since the first day we met, and I’m not going to be your punching bag anymore. Please go to the Academic Officer and ask for a transfer. Tell him we’re incompatible. I’ll back you up on that one.”
“I don’t want a transfer,” Sam said, his lips now inches away from Gus’s.
“Why not?” Gus said quietly through clenched teeth, just in case there were any stray cadets roaming around in the hall. “You’ve done everything possible to offend me and my family. Why not move on to another cadet? Go ahead, man, share the charms of Stewart Adam Morley with the entire Citadel, one cadet at a time.”
Gus glared at him, the normal bright silver-gray of his eyes now a dark, gloomy gray. “Furthermore, you can fuck with me all you want, but leave my crazy family out—”
Sam had heard enough. Before Gus could finish his sentence, Sam covered Gus’s lips in a crushing kiss.

Meet the Author

This is where you really get to know Scotty Cade, the person. There’s probably more information here than you’ll ever want to know, but here goes:

I started my life in the city of New Orleans, better known as the Big Easy and was raised along with my two sisters in a very small neighborhood along the mighty Mississippi River. I was undeniably a momma’s boy and enjoyed a lot of alone time with my stay-at-home mother before my younger sister was born, while my older sister was at school and my Dad was at work.

I spent fun days with my mom around the house doing chores riding on the back of her canister vacuum cleaner while we listened to musical greats such as Etta James, Dinah Washington and Brenda Lee. I truly believe this is where my love of music was born.
When the chores were done, we’d settle down for story time which is where my love of reading and eventually of writing was also born. But all that came to a horrible end when my baby sister came into the picture and I no longer had Mom all to myself. Then another horrible incident struck — my sixth birthday and the first grade. Oh boy, did I hate going to school. I went, but not without kicking and screaming literally every morning until I was seven. My poor mother.

Sharing my mother with my newborn sister and attending school left us very little time together and I truly felt deserted. But I really showed her. I jumped ship into my Father’s world. I was the only boy, so it was the logical next step. He was delighted and I was again happy to be the center of someone’s attention, I soaked it up everyday.

My father raised quarter horses as a hobby and some of my fondest memories surround that time in my life. When we were older, on weekends the entire family would pack up the horses and head to local horse shows where, my father, my younger sister and I would compete in barrel racing and cutting. But my most cherished memories are of my father and me taking long horseback rides along the levies of the Mississippi enjoying lunch prepared by my mother. We spent long summer days riding and jabbering about this or that or just enjoying a comfortable silence. It wasn’t really the conversation or the silence that was important to me, but the interest he took in my life that forty-five years later, still makes my heart swell.

After my brief and unsuccessful marriage, one of those special moments is where I found the nerve to come out to my Father. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. He did much better that I and in the end, wanted only my happiness. He was nothing but supportive and non-judgmental. I am such a lucky guy.

Unfortunately, the lights in my life dimmed when my loving mother died of colon cancer and dimmed yet again when my Father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Luckily, he never forgot who I was but he did forget that I was gay and in a long term relationship with Kell, whom he adored when he was healthy. The sad thing was every day when we talked, he would ask about a girlfriend and each time I would have to tell him I was gay. The first two years we went through this routinely but each time he seemed to take it a little harder, so I finally gave up and allowed the disease to win. I simply told him no girlfriend yet and moved the conversation along. That was difficult for me.

One morning he slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness. After several days taking nightly shifts at his bedside it was my turn to stay the night. Long after my family had left, the aid came into the room and gave him a bath, combed his hair and powdered him up. He looked so relaxed and peaceful and ready to move on I couldn’t help myself. I crawled into the hospital bed with him and told him it was okay for him to go. He’d been a great father and husband and his wife, my mom was waiting for him on the other side.
After a long moment I eventually slipped into the chair next to his bed and watched his stomach go up and down until it stopped. That night he passed away with me at his bedside. My parents were both wonderful, accepting and loving people and I will remember their love as long as I live.

Oh boy! Enough of the sappiness. Let’s talk about my favorite subject. Me.

I attended Louisiana State University, majoring in Marketing with a secondary in Business Administration, but was lured away from LSU before graduating by the offer of a job to manage a large well established furniture store in New Orleans. I went for it. I stayed with that company for five years and started making my way up the corporate ladder. I joined a high-tech company in New Orleans and was transferred to Atlanta where I met the love of my life. Kell and I have been together over twenty years now and we’re still going strong.

I’ve worked for a total of six companies throughout my twenty-five-year career and ended up as the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Public Relations for a very large company based in Atlanta. Throughout my career I focused my writing capabilities on Marketing materials, Annual Reports, Press Releases, radio scripts, broadcast media, and the likes, but always had novels running rampant in my mind.

Over ten years ago, Kell and I gave up the corporate rat race and bought a small hotel and restaurant on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Can you imagine two southern boys ending up in New England, on an island no less? What a culture shock – for us and for Martha’s Vineyard. About three years into our venture, we hit burn-out and hired a general manager to run the business while we took a year off. That is when I started my first novel, Final Encore, and I haven’t stopped writing since. After that first year off, Kell and I enjoyed our freedom so much that we purchased a forty-two-foot motor yacht called “One Mo Time,” which is now where most of my writing is done. And yes, “MO” stands for homo in case you were wondering. We travel up and down the eastern seaboard biannually with our Shetland Sheepdog, Mavis ending up in the South for winters and back up North for the summers.

Luckily, the ideas for books keep coming and sometimes my fingers are just not fast enough to get it all down. So I dance the dance between my fingers and brain on a daily basis and can only hope for the best. As a southerner who was raised to value commitment and fidelity, my characters always find their way to long healthy relationships, however long it takes and however difficult the path. I believe that in the end, the boy should always get the boy. After all, I got mine.

The Country Doctor's Bride by Anita Philmar
Naked Bluff, Texas Series
Publisher: Anita Philmar
Historical Western Erotica

With no ties to Texas, Dixy secures a ride to the next town on her way out of the state. The driver, Tobias Poe offers to let her rest. While she’s in the back, he is shot.

Rushing to save him, she arrives in Naked Bluff, Texas.
The town’s doctor, Nathaniel Murphy can’t save him, but he can save her?

Penniless, alone, and now a murder suspect, Dixy has no alternative but to accept his help.

Can this couple build a future together or will someone silence her before she can identify the murder?

Teaser:
“Good, now you just take it easy, and in no time, we’ll be in town.” His words drifted over her head.
The warm haven created from being out of the wind and under the heavy cotton tarp allowed her muscles to relax. Her mind darted off as to the problems ahead. Where would she sleep tonight?
She didn’t have any money and had only agreed to travel to Naked Bluff with Tobias because Madeline Cowden had vouched for him. Still, what choice did Dixy have? If she had any hope of getting back to Georgia, she had to count on the help of strangers.
Fighting not to worry, she forced herself to breathe deeply and clear her mind of all thoughts. Slowly, the clicked-clank of the wheels and the steady rocking lured her to sleep.
What seemed like only a few minutes later, Dixy heard voices and noticed they weren’t moving. Had they arrived in town?
Disoriented, she listened to a rough cadence of male voice. His loud accusing tone shoved back the lure of continuing snooze. She shifted and squinted up to where Tobias still sat on the wagon’s bench.
“Now, now, there’s no cause for you to get upset. I have everything under control,” Tobias assured the other man.
“So do I,” the stranger yelled.
Pop, pop, pop.
Dixy froze. Gunfire wasn’t something she was prepared to deal with.
Holding her breath, she silently wondered, what the hell was going on?
Several long seconds ticked by, then the distinct sound of horse’s hooves striking the wet ground sang through the silence. Plop, plop, plop, the noise indicated the man had ridden away.
“Tobias, what was that...”
A body crumbled on top of her. Shocked by the sudden attack, Dixy scrambled to one side and sat up to stare into Tobias’ pain-filled eyes. His face a pale ashen color, his chest covered in blood.
“My God, Tobias,” Dixy exclaimed and scurried to give him room to lie down on the hard wooden planks. “You’ve been shot.”
