Author Interview with J.A. Boulet

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main characters and what we can expect when we pick it up.

1833 Brothers & Sisters is a story about the tumultuous period before the American Civil War. Slaves were escaping to the northern states, and Natives were being thrown out of their homes. In Philadelphia, the influential Eastman Empire is controlled by Jesse Eastman in 1833. When an estranged brother enlists a group of unscrupulous thugs to take over, all hell breaks loose.  

Taking the story from a concept to a published book is a long and involved process. How does that usually work for you?

It usually takes me 3-6 months to write the first draft. Then another 2-6 months for editing, formatting, cover, and media releases. I wrote this book at a more leisurely pace because I was feeling a lot of pressure lately. It took me slightly longer than an entire year from start to finish.

Which of your books would you recommend for readers to choose first if they’re new to you and your books?

I would suggest reading 1956 Love & Revolution or Whichever Way The Road Leads first. I believe these are my best books. There's a lot of history that you’ll learn about in these two books. But 1833 Brothers & Sisters is a good treat too! I heard from many readers that they read one book and searched for more of my books to read, so enjoy! I have 7 books available, and I’ll be writing my 8^th soon.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

My books are mostly character-driven. My characters come to life on their own, it seems. To keep the story from getting out of control, I follow an outline. Also, my antagonists are sometimes hard for me to write, so I listen to songs and music about what I think the antagonist would like. It helps me get into their evil minds. My favorite song for this book was The Devil Wears a Suit & Tie. Listen to it!

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

I write realistic romance, with a good dose of history. Not everyone is perfect, and love hurts.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you're currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

I will be starting my next book in December 2025. It will either be about the 1850s Gold Rush or a standalone book about letters during the Holodomor. Which one would you want to read?

 When Zee stepped back into the mansion, several angry shouts from the office raised the hairs on her neck. She padded quickly up the stairs and turned to look down the stairs behind her. Billy stormed out of the main floor office, flanked by Jesse, Xavier, and Samuel.

 

Jesse was waving a large document in his hand. His dress shoes clacked on the marble floors as he chased Billy from the house. “This is not a legal document!” Jesse shouted, his voice reverberating against the tiled ceiling. “You don’t even have signing authority for the Empire!”

 

Billy brazenly turned and shouted back. “I am an Eastman! I can sign a bill of sale for my family business.” His voice thundered across the entire mansion.

 

Jesse’s face turned red, and his breathing expanded and contracted in his chest as he tried to control his urge to punch his brother in the face. “Get out,” Jesse calmly stated.

 

“What?” Billy shouted.

 

“You heard me,” Jesse replied quietly. Xavier and Samuel positioned themselves to quickly intervene if the two brothers began physically fighting.

 

“You’re telling me to leave?” Billy’s finger flew in the air and pointed accusingly at Jesse.

 

“Yes, Billy,” Jesse glowered, the anger still evident in his voice. “You attempted to sell the company illegally for a fraction of what it is worth to a bunch of thugs from Texas.” Jesse ground his teeth and clenched his hands into balls of anger. “You are officially extradited from the Eastman family. Father did it to me, and I am now doing it to you.” Jesse took two large strides towards his brother.

 

Billy jumped to the side to avoid a direct hit, but that wasn’t what Jesse was doing.

J. A. Boulet is a passionate historical fiction novelist weaving tales with strong romantic themes. Raised in a Hungarian refugee family, J. A. was born and grew up in Canada with strong moral convictions, which she has stood behind all her life. Ms. Boulet began writing poetry at a very young age and progressed to short stories and novels easily. She quickly became a history geek and became fascinated with ancestry and the rough path of immigration. Her university studies ranged from photojournalism to accounting. The sound of two cane sticks striking each other reminded me of how a scant two hours ago the Home Secretary had slapped my posterior as he ravaged me. Pressed for time he’d unceremoniously bent me over his Whitehall desk, pulled down my culottes and drawers, grabbed my shoulders for leverage, and drove his prodigious erection into me with frightful force. A few minutes later he flooded my quivering cunt with his lava hot seed. It had been a perfunctory fuck, short and sharp, and my climax perversely satisfying.

My cunny still retained a fair quantity of his ejaculation, and I shifted in my seat contriving to put pressure on my fleshy nether lips to keep it from escaping. My apparently not-so-subtle contortions did not escape the notice of the fine-looking man sitting opposite me. I’d quite forgotten about him as I relived the morning’s carnal adventure. He cleared his throat which brought me back to the here and now.

I was sitting in a Buckingham Palace anteroom, and I felt my cheeks warm under the scrutiny of this ruggedly handsome and smartly uniformed officer. When I’d first arrived, he’d introduced himself as Guy Tremayne. He was in fact the famous Major of the Southern Royal Air Corps who’d distinguished himself by leading the survivors of an airship crash on Coronation Island, a frozen rock midway between Tierra Del Fuego and Antarctica. Their inspirational struggle for survival on the barren island was a true Boys Own Adventure. I’d read his file during my recent convalescence and believed Major Tremayne to be a brave and resourceful officer, respected by his men and superiors alike.

He had given me an elegant bow, took my proffered hand, and lightly brushed his lips against my knuckles. To say I was instantly attracted would be an understatement. He was the epitome of masculinity: well over six feet tall, slim, and long legged. His hips were narrow, his chest deep, and his shoulders broad. His sharply chiselled face was suntanned, and above a thin black moustache his nose was pleasantly symmetrical. The palest of blue eyes gave his countenance a strikingly mysterious and yet desirable aspect.

My cunny throbbed.

He was sitting as if he was on parade with his back straight as a board. He’d started his career in the cavalry, and I couldn’t help but imagine him in the saddle riding into battle, his sabre held high, its razor edge glinting in the sun. He’d actually seen combat, and his curly hair disguised the missing left ear, lost during a bloody skirmish in the Punjab.

Thwack! Thwack!

“Do you singlestick?” I asked him, my mouth dry, and my voice husky.

Thwack! Thwack!

The corners of his mouth curled into a smile. “Indeed, I do. The sabre is my weapon of choice.”

Singlestick fighting had been a feature of English martial life for centuries and cavalry men used it for practicing sabre strokes from horseback. Though the sport had become highly regimented, it required fast reflexes and strict discipline. I found it useful for developing forearm and wrist strength.

“Perhaps we should have a bout?”

“It would be my pleasure.”

Thwack! Thwack!

My cunt throbbed lustily, and inside my blouse, my nipples ached. I licked my bottom lip, slowly. “Are you residing in London?”

He threw up his hands. “Alas. I exist at the whim of the War Department.”

“Then we should arrange a time soon.”

“I believe I am free tomorrow evening.”

“As it happens, so am I.”

We’d just concluded arrangements to meet at a restaurant in Chelsea when the door to the anteroom opened, and a footman showed in a slim, elegantly dressed woman. She was about forty years of age, with an attractive oval face and perfect complexion accentuated by challenging hazel eyes and provocatively painted red lips. Her luxurious auburn hair was coiled expertly around her head in such a way that suggested considerable length. The bulk was held in place with gem-tipped pins which glinted in the harsh electric light. I imagined her standing naked, her hair cascading over her ample breasts, reaching and discreetly hiding her mound of Venus. I recognised her as the wife of a member of the House of Lords, and this sensual impression I’d constructed was at odds with her reputation. She was known as a straitlaced prude, active in charitable institutions and a fierce and passionate advocate for women’s suffrage. On one occasion she’d been seen at a rally striking a constable with a placard after she accused him of taking undisclosed liberties.

I curtsied. “Lady Fogerty, I’m Rachel Clayton.”

Can you describe your dream home?

We built it in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a vacation and rental home. It was six bedrooms on a beach with a third-floor great room overlooking spectacular sunsets on the Pamlico Sound and a spit across the island to the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricanes, COVID lockdowns, constant upkeep, and rental headaches led us to sell it to make life simpler. I don’t miss the headaches but I do miss that dream house.

If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?

Beef bourguignon that includes shallots, carrots, mushrooms, and cooked in red wine, served with mashed potatoes and burgundy wine. Key lime pie for dessert or fruit pie with vanilla ice cream with a nice cheese plate and fruit.

Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.

A former film producer who said she loved my book so much that she wanted to share it with her network to see if there was interest in adapting the novel for film because the world needs another great spiritual novel that’s also a rollicking good story.

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to research an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?

I would love to spend a few months in the Greek Islands and Capri, one of the five small islands that make up the Gulf of Naples, off Italy. I love books that have a rich historical setting, ancient culture, stunning landscape, distinctive culture, and intriguing local lore that establishes a great vibe, and sets up fascinating subplots.

Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?

I recommended the cover’s sacred geometry image, which represents the flower of life. The publisher’s designer then worked to set in an exquisite shade of blue, drenched in shafts of brilliant light, with a font that invokes angels and ancient text.

“To thwart death is not to conquer it,” the young master said, and the husband buried his head in the bed’s embroidered cover. In a single, fluid movement, the holy man rose and stroked his host’s bent head, His long, graceful fingers raking the dark hair, slick with perfumed oil, revealing a channel of pale, moist scalp.

 

Beyond the bedroom, in the narrow hallway, the master found his three companions propped against a wall and dozing. He tapped the closest with a calloused foot, and one by one the sleeping men awoke. “Is she well now?” the tall one asked, stretching.

 

“She will be dead come dawn,” his master whispered, as the four men stepped into the dusty and deserted Indian night.

 

The phone rang. Claire woke up and realized her face was wet. She’d been crying again. She eyed the clock—9 a.m. She cleared her throat, picked up the phone, and tried to sound awake. “Hello?”

 

“You still sleeping?” Claire held the phone away from her ear to stop Deirdre Vetch’s whine from piercing her brain. “You’re coming to the gallery to talk about the painting, right? We must talk.” Deirdre’s verbal pummeling began.

Silence fell over the derelict ship.

 

An ominous drone vibrated through the ship’s hull that Jael could feel beneath his feet and then the cargo hold was violently breached. An Archon corpse floated by Jael, their helmet and head nothing more than a smoldering clump of matter vitrified to their pressure suit.

 

The other Archons unleashed a barrage of gunfire. Emerging from the breach, Mortuum biobots slithered into the cargo hold—serpentine constructs of metal and flesh, each limb a deadly weapon, protecting their central brain encased in layers of plasticrete casing.

 

Jael took a deep breath in and steeled himself for combat.

 

“Shoot the fraxxing things!” Garlial yelled over the comms, firing wildly at the biobots. His shots were haphazard, more out of fear than strategy.

 

A biomechanical tendril whipped over Jael. Garlial dove onto the floor to avoid it, dropping his rifle in the process. Their gazes locked and Garlial sneered, scrambling to grab his weapon.

 

Jael kicked away the rifle just before Garlial got his hands on it. He pushed off the floor, turning his body as he snapped out another kick and it connected with Garlial’s helmet. Jael drew his pistol and fired.

 

Garlial rolled and the beam barely missed him. He lurched forward, grasping the pistol before Jael could fire again and eject the lens cartridge.

 

Pulling free, Jael twisted himself around, positioning himself on Garlial’s back. He brought the pistol up and slammed it into Garlial’s helmet. Jael raised it again but leaped off and rolled as a wayward arc of plasma from a biobot raced toward him.

 

“Fraxxing scav!” Garlial scrambled to his feet and tipped a crate towards Jael.

 

Jael swung his body around and hopped up, avoiding the crate entirely. Garlial drew a combat knife from a panel on his thigh and slashed at Jael. With the palm of his hand on Garlial’s wrist, Jael stopped his attack. He grasped the inside of Garlial’s armored cuff and pulled him in close.

 

Jael dropped his weight on Garlial’s arm, and he felt the limb snap.

Gina had never seen her parents dance before and wasn’t about to miss this. “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” started to play. Mario and Franny truly displayed their love as they glided effortlessly across the floor.

Watching her parents dance in perfect unison, Gina started weeping and couldn’t stop. Trevor drew her closer, seeing how emotional she was. Mario walked over and dragged Gina to the dance floor. What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Spumoni, which is chocolate, cherry, and pistachio together. The best is when an ice cream shop has all three flavors, and you put it together yourself. The key is the chunks; you’ve got to have real cherries and pistachio chunks in there.

Which mythological creature are you most like? I’d say the mermaid. First, I’ve always loved the water. I spent two years living on a sailboat when I was a child. Second, I’m loyal until you do something that doesn’t warrant it. Then, I’ll drop you like a stinky sock, and you won’t hear from me again.

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you. It’s not possible to make an indelible impression on me because my memory is complete and utter crap. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you the last five books I’ve read without looking. Having said that, I remember falling in love with anything Jude Deveraux at a very young age. Her books created my passion for the genre for sure. I remember the spice, the slow burn, the angst, and, of course, the happily ever after.

How do you develop your plot and characters?I start with the characters and go from there. I have an in-depth character sheet about seven pages long, and as I’m filling it out, diving into my character’s hopes and dreams, the plot starts to develop. By the end of each character, I’ve got a pretty solid idea of what I’m doing with the story.

Describe your writing space. Depends on the temperature. If it’s warm outside, I’m in the sun. If that’s too hot, I’ll move to the table in the shade. If it’s still too hot or cold in Montana, I’m at my kitchen table or snuggled up by the fire. I’m still looking for my routine and may never find one, but so far, it’s working. I’ve tried going to coffee shops or bookstores, but it hasn’t worked. Instead, I move around my house and move when I need a change of scenery or get a cramp.

Q: How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

A:  For over 30 years, I have been visiting Key West in Florida with my husband (and daughters when they were younger). It is a fun island with tons of bars with live music, T-shirt shops, art galleries and excellent restaurants. We own a time-share for two weeks (one during Fantasy Fest in October and one during Spring Break in March) at a resort called The Banyan – because there are huge banyan trees out front. From there we can basically walk or ride bikes anywhere on the island. Because I know the island so well, I based Sunrise Island on it.

 

Q: What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book, Island Detour?

A: This contemporary romance is set at an environmental school in the Florida Keys where Sophie rides out her suspension as a Princeton Prep School teacher. This fish out of water not only tackles her surroundings (after many false starts), but manages to tame the handsome but arrogant marine biologist who refuses to make her life easy.

Q: Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A: I wait until I’m done. My first draft is based on an in-depth outline that I create for every scene and every chapter before I begin writing, so I know exactly what the story is about and who the characters are.  

 

Q: Describe your writing space/office!

A: I have an office with a wrap-around desk which faces a window overlooking our back yard. To the left is a file cabinet with a printer on top and to the right is a set of drawers with pens, paper, stickie notes, paper clips, index cards and anything else I could possibly need when I’m writing. The closet contains a myriad of books on writing, such as “Building Better Plots,” “Creating Characters,” “Word Painting,” “Goal, Motivation, and Conflict,” a dictionary, a Thesaurus, etc, etc. There is also an elliptical in case I ever want to exercise, a TV to watch in case I ever want to exercise, and a comfy oversized chair to read in. (I generally pick the chair as opposed to the elliptical)  

 

Q: What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A: M&Ms (or anything milk chocolate)

 

Q: What’s your favorite genre to read?

A: Contemporary Romance

 

Q: What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

A: I loved the audio book for “Daisy Jones and the Six” as well as the TV series (on Amazon Prime Video)

 

Q: What do you do when you have free time?

A: I read.

 

Q: What are three words that describe your Main Characters?

A: determined, resilient, collaborative (Sophie)

     controlling, guilt-ridden, stubborn (Max)

 

Q: What can readers expect from you next?

A: The wheels are turning for the next book in this series (the Sunrise Island Series), which will probably be Maddie’s story. I am also finishing the fourth and last book in my Sworn Sisters Series called “Sworn to Collide.”

She watched him in profile, the brooding, detached fisherman whose lips rarely inched into a smile, whose eyes rarely sparkled, and whose cutting words were meant to slice—and hurt. Which they did.

 

Sophie looked over at Ben, who had remained quiet during their little altercation. He held his finger to his lips as if to say enough.

 

She itched to continue but followed his unspoken suggestion. He knew Max a lot better than she did. And sometimes, she just had to let things settle down.
