Excerpt 1

“That way. It’s part of what I smelled earlier.” Ruck headed off a short ways, and Vladimir looked for something to bind the wolf’s wounds. He found nothing. “Vladimir,” Ruck whispered. “Get over here.”

Vlad carefully lifted the wolf into his arms, following the sound of Ruck’s voice. “What is it?”

“A cave of some sort. And it’s a big one. Do you think he’d been living in there? It smells wolfy. I’ll stay here with him. You go check it out.” Ruck took the wolf and cradled him in his arms.

Vladimir approached the cave entrance, scented for danger, then went inside.

Overlapping scents filled his nose: wolf, human, animal, bodily fluids, food—it was nearly overwhelming. Fortunately Vladimir could see well in the dark, since he only had the light of the cave mouth to see by. He took a few more steps and came to a larger room with a few blankets, boxes, and… stuff.

Four wolf cubs approached him cautiously. They had to be only about three or four weeks old. They were full-blooded wolves, and after some smelling and posturing, they came forward. Vladimir petted each of them, transferring his scent, letting them know that he wasn’t going to hurt them. Once they knew they were safe, the three boys and the girl pup began to roughhouse and play, trying to pull him into their game. And they might have succeeded if not for a wail from the other side of the room.

A baby. Vladimir hurried over, with the pups right behind him, and lifted up the little one. The child was clearly a shifter like him, a few months old, but fat and healthy judging by the force of his scream. The kid was probably hungry, and sure enough, Vladimir found a box with bottles and formula, as well as a jug of water that he began heating on a tiny stove. They made the formula and set it in some cold water to cool.

He’d seen the parents of the pack make up bottles, so he did his best and popped the nipple into the little guy’s mouth. He instantly quieted, sucking the nourishment like it was going out of style.

“What’s happening?” Ruck asked from the mouth of the cave.

Vladimir wrapped the baby in a blanket and carried him out with him, the pups following. “I think we found out why this guy was here and what he was doing.” Though the pups and the baby raised a lot more questions.

Guest Author day with Rosanna Leo

Please give a warm welcome to author Rosanna Leo as she chats with us about her latest book, An Irresistible Force and what some of her favorite shows are.

My Top 10 Home Renovation Show Hosts by Rosanna Leo

I’m very excited to be here on Dawn’s Reading Nook to share the news about my new release An Irresistible Force, Handymen 2! For those of you who are familiar with my Handymen series, you’ll know it features a hunky trio of brothers as the heroes. Michael, Eli and Nick Zorn are contractors, but they are also the hosts of a Canadian home renovation show called “Handymen.” An Irresistible Force, book 2 in the series, is Eli’s story. I was inspired to write this series after watching so many home renovation and real estate shows on HGTV, and I thought it might be fun to share my top ten list of HGTV-style show hosts. (Psst! Not a single Property Brother in sight on this list!)

10) Sebastian Clovis and Samantha Pynn from Save My Reno. I love that Seb and Sam focus on helping homeowners tackle their renovation projects on a budget…something my Handymen try very hard to do as well.

9) Andrew and Kevin from Brojects. Well, I had to include some brothers, but I didn’t want to go with the obvious brothers. Andrew and Kevin work well together and I love their sibling antics.

8) Paul Lafrance of Decked Out. Paul was a huge inspiration as I wrote my Handymen series. In fat, his deck work is what inspired Nick Zorn, the decking expert in my books.

7) Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer of Location, Location, Location. Kirstie and Phil’s show is one I’ve always loved, and it was one of the first real estate shows that caught my interest. I still enjoy watching the reruns.

6) Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree of Escape to the Chateau. What’s not to love about escaping to a French chateau? You can’t help rooting for quirky Dick and Angel as they renovate their dream home.

5) Sarah Richardson and Tommy Smythe from Sarah’s House. Sarah and Tommy are awesome. Their banter always makes me smile, and I love that they bring a Canadian flair to their show.

4) Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper. These two are adorable, full stop. They deserve their own romance novel.

3) Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Linda Barker from Changing Rooms. Although it’s been some time since Changing Rooms was on the air, it was one I never missed when it was on. Hosts Laurence and Linda were always so much fun, and I loved all the different designs.

2) Mike Holmes and Mike Holmes Jr. from Holmes + Holmes. Well, Mike Holmes is the king of Canadian home renovation shows. And I have to admit I have a wee crush on his son, Mike Jr. There’s a lot of biceps action in this show!

1) Scott McGillivray from Income Property. Scott is the one who first made me think, “Hmm, I want to write a romance series about contractors on a TV show!” He’s so genuine and helpful…and very easy on the eyes. True inspiration in rolled up shirt sleeves.

There you have it. The people and programs that inspired my Handymen series. I hope you’ll check out An Irresistible Force and the rest of the series, and that you enjoy getting to know my Handymen!

Blurb:

TV landscaper Eli Zorn has always been a fixer. But when a family medical situation teaches him there are some things you just can’t fix, he’s desperate to return to work for a distraction. The demolition of an old cottage in tranquil Muskoka, Ontario, is just the ticket.

Unfortunately, a gorgeous woman has handcuffed herself to the cottage and she won’t let it go down without a fight. Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Nolan has history with the place, and she won’t let Eli and the Handymen team get their hands on her refuge.

The cottage belongs to Eli’s mentor. Not only is Peter Nolan a giant in the landscaping business, he’s also Bernie’s uncle. And it becomes clear very quickly that relations in the Nolan family are more than strained.

As Eli and Bernie grapple with old loyalties, they are determined to see each other as the enemy. But this is one attraction that cannot be denied, and one that they’re losing the will to resist…

Excerpt:

When Eli and Bernie walked into the reception area of the Black Oak Resort, every head turned. He couldn’t blame them. Not only were they drenched, they still had patches of mud all over their clothes and skin. They looked like rejects from one of those reality shows where people were forced to live on an island and drink their own urine.

The desk clerk opened and closed his mouth a couple of times. The hotel manager gawked. She couldn’t have looked more shocked if they’d burst in, banging a few pots and pans. An elderly lady passed them by, gave Bernie’s filthy hair a once-over and issued a decisive “tsk.”

Without batting an eye, Bernie raised her voice so it could be heard throughout the vast reception area. “I say, Elijah. I’m not sure this resort meets our usual standards. I do hope they have Grey Poupon here.”

Eli put on his best Thurston Howell the Third voice. “Come, Lovey. Let’s retire to our suite. I think it’s time for my milk bath.”

Bernie clapped a hand over her mouth. Eli burst out laughing, which only made her laugh harder. Cackling, they hurried to the elevator. Luckily, it was waiting and they plowed in, making more noise than the Black Oak had probably ever heard.

Bernie stood with her back to one elevator wall. “Did you see the looks on their faces?”

“Well, we do look like we fell into a sink hole.” Eli hit the ‘five’ button and stood opposite her. “I think the hotel manager was about to throw us out.”

“She wouldn’t dare. You’re one of the famous Zorn brothers.”

“We’re not that famous.”

“Now, now, Eli. No one tosses out Panty Melter Zorn on my watch.”

As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Bernie froze.

The elevator door slowly closed.

“Excuse me, Bernadette. Did you just call me…‘Panty Melter?’”

She paled and swallowed but threw her shoulders back. “What if I did?”

He tried not to smile. “Is that your nickname for me?”

She averted her gaze.

“Bernie. Do I melt your underwear?”

“Maybe. Maybe not. The proof is in the panties.”

Her cheeks, so pink under the dried-on mud, brought out the heat in his own face. Her dark eyes sparkled with a hint of a dare, and although her hair stuck out in places and mud lined her clothing, she’d never looked sexier than in that moment.

The woman made dirty look good.

Top Ten List from author Kate Hill

When I'm writing the first draft of a story, I love to listen to music. The music has to fit the tone of the book, or in the case of my latest release, it needs to fit the time period, for me to listen to it while writing.
This book is set during 1967 and 1968. There was a lot of good music back then, songs that I've always loved but never really considered the era they came from. Writing the story and doing research for it made me look at music from the time period in a different way. I wasn't alive during those years, but I spoke to people who lived during that era, and I learned a lot, not only about historical facts, but about how people felt about and reacted to events during that time.
In this post, I'd like to share my top ten favorite songs that were popular during 1967 and 1968.
1. Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
2. Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
3. Daydream believer - The Monkeys
4. Delilah - Tom Jones
5. Do You Know the Way to San Jose - Dionne Warwick
6. Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon - Neil Diamond
7. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
8. The Letter - The Box Tops
9. Love Child - The Supremes
10. To Sir With Love - Lulu
Do you enjoy listening to old music? What are some of your favorite old songs?

Angela's Kiss
(Contemporary Romance, Military Romance)
Christmas Eve, 1967. Two strangers united by mutual loss find the love they’ve been searching for.

After surviving captivity in a Vietnam prison camp, Master Sergeant Abraham Marley Fiske longs more than ever for a loving family life, but he doesn’t believe it’s in his future. Then a promise to a deceased friend sends him to the woman who can make his dream come true.

Since her brother was killed in Vietnam, Angela Franco has been caring for her young niece. She never expected to fall in love with her brother’s best friend, but when she meets Abe, she can’t ignore her feelings for him. Having lost her brother, will she now risk her heart by planning a future with Abe?

Note: Angela's Kiss was previously published as His Sister's Kiss. This is a re-edited version and contains additional scenes.

Excerpt:
On New Year’s Eve, Abe arrived at Angela’s shortly after her last student of the day left her house.
“I’m sorry I’m not quite ready to go yet,” Angela said after greeting him with a hug and kiss. “Make yourself comfortable while I get dressed.”
She hurried upstairs and changed into a lavender dress. After fixing her hair and makeup, she joined Abe on the couch where he was watching television.
“Wow. You’re a stunner,” he said, rising to his feet to stare at her.
His words and the expression in his eyes warmed Angela in a way she’d never felt before.
“Thank you, Abe. I’ll just be a minute. I have to get the cupcakes I baked, and then we can leave.”
Angela stepped into the kitchen. She had just finished covering the tray of chocolate cupcakes when Abe slid his arms around her from behind.

Top Ten Tips for Dating an Immortal
When you date an immortal, it's not like dating a regular guy. This goes for all types of immortals, including fey folk, vampires, the undead, alien immortals, and genetically enhanced warriors such as the Ultras in my Bringer of Chaos series. Often, immortals have lived hundreds if not thousands of years, so here are ten tips to keep in mind.
  1. Immortals value time, but not in the way that you do. Depending on the era he was born in (among other things), he may never pick you up on time, or he may never be late. Whichever way it goes, accept it as the way he is and try to deal with it. Which brings us to point two...
  2. If the guy you're dating is an Ultra, don't expect him to change overnight. They were genetically created to be "set in their ways". Habits of a year or two are hard to break. Imagine changing habits ingrained at birth and then developed over millennia.
  3. Expect to be showered with gifts. Many immortals have accumulated wealth over the centuries and may think nothing of spending a few thousand on a trinket for the one they love. Immortals do not give zircons - they prefer diamonds.
  4. It's okay to give your immortal gifts. Weres might like a nice brush for their coat (especially if you spend time using it on them - they love being touched in a sensual way) and the rumor that dragons love shiny things is true. Be careful about giving flowers to certain types of immortals. Vampires might equate flowers with gravesites and some weres might think you're offering them a snack.
  5. Don't take it personal if your immortal tells you what to do. While immortals are likely to believe you know what you're doing -- they tend to see everyone as babes next to them. Just be firm but polite about not needing help unless you ask.
  6. Be aware that if your immortal is a shapeshifter, you might need dress in layers. Why? If you date a guy who can shift into dragon form and expects you to hop on his back and hang on while he flies you to another location, it helps to pack a sweater.
  7. On the subject of clothing, consider not wearing T-shirts with certain slogans or icons. For example, if you're dating an immortal from mythology, donning the latest Avenger T-shirt with Thor's hammer on the front might not get rave reviews. Not all the gods and demi-gods saw him as a hero, you know. ;)
  8. If your immortal shapeshifter is a fire-breather such as a dragon, fire god, certain aliens, or a victim of cosmic radiation [Human Torch anyone?], watch certain phrases, especially ones such as "light my fire" or a passionate "get me hot, babe." Some shapeshifters tend to be literal-minded when it comes to their abilities.
  9. Special note for dating immortal weres: if they have an alternate shape than entails fur, carry a lint brush and avoid complaints about "shedding." 'Nuff said.
  10. Be prepared to have sex. Immortals love sensuality and sexually attuned women. Okay, now that I think about it, this point works with any guy.

Excerpt from Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire by Kayelle Allen

In this excerpt, Pietas and the search party sent to find him have become lost and have walked for hours. When he realizes they're near a summit that will allow him to see the valley they searched for, he heads for it. Joss, a telepathic warrior he loves tries to keep him from going, insisting she has a better vantage point. He recognizes it as an evasion.

"Joss. The truth this time."
While she studied him, he remained motionless. The gentle prod of her mind across his shields reminded him she'd seen his thoughts despite his best efforts. Or perhaps she'd allowed him to be aware. In the past, he'd noticed such intrusion during training but not outside it.
"Pietas, if you want to see the caldera from this point, I can't stop you, but once you see what's out there, you can't unsee it. I want to spare you the devastation until you've had a chance to see the good side. If I take you in through the pass you can appreciate the true beauty of this place first. Maybe come up with a way we can make it work here. Survive."
Devastation.
According to Joss, half a million of his people lay in helpless cryosleep within lifepods on the other side of that hill. Over three thousand pods had been damaged beyond saving. The frozen immortals within them shattered.
A short hike above, the summit waited. In two short minutes he could see for himself. "How long would your route take us?"
"Less than a half hour."
Once more, the short distance to the actual summit drew his attention. How many steps?
"Pi?" Six nudged him. "Is that even a blink in the life of an immortal?"
"No, ghost, it's not." How grateful he was for this man. "Besides, I'm patient."
His sister scoffed. "You?" Turning to the twins, she pointed at Pietas. "That is not my brother."
No, he was not. He was far better. His sister could see the change. Why would she not accept it? Resisting the urge to respond with cynicism, Pietas shut his mouth.
He indicated the route Joss wanted to take. "Let's go your way."
"Thank you for listening to me." Joss took Pietas by the hand, reached up, and dragged a fingertip down the cleft in his chin. "This place is stunning. I hate that so much of it will be spoiled by our being here."
"Why? Has Mother released environmental impact studies?"
"No, she--" The look Joss sent his way resembled pity. "You'll see. Not far now."
"You've been saying 'not far' for hours. Did I not teach you to mark trails?"
"I'm sorry, Pietas. It won't happen again."
Oh, but it would. She wouldn't meant to, but it would. He'd tried for centuries to teach her how to find her way, to no avail. He kissed her cheek and drew her into his arms, savoring her warmth.
"Joss." He placed his mouth near her ear. "You couldn't find your way out of a round room with one door."
She jerked up her head and looked at him, eyes wide.
"And I adore you for it."

About Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire
What if you were a soldier marooned on an undeveloped planet?
What if you had no food and few survival tools? What if you'd been genetically engineered? No matter how agonizing the wound, you survive. No matter how you die, you come back.
It could be worse. You could be here alone. But that's the problem. You're not.
On one hand, there's a tribe of sentient panthers who protect you. Although you hate humans, the one who was dumped on this planet with you has become a trusted friend. The beautiful telepathic warrior you've loved since forever is at your side.
On the other hand, half a million people who depend on you are trapped inside stasis pods, waiting for you to save them. It wouldn't be so bad if you could wake up a few at a time. But the traitors who abandoned you and your followers set the timers to release all half million.
At the same time.
You're facing an ecological disaster and over five hundred thousand hungry, thirsty, homeless immortal warriors.
Worse still, before you can build shelter, figure out how to grow food, or set up a government, you must take back command from a ruthless enemy you've fought for centuries.
Your brutal, merciless father.
Talk about being forged in fire...
Immortals may heal, but a wound of the heart lasts forever.

Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire has no profanity or explicit content, but lots of angst, a little humor, some sweet romance, and a ton of betrayal with plenty of vengeance. Oh, and let's not forget--one ginormous black "kitty".

Welcome Charlie Cochrane today

Please give a warm welcome to author Charlie Cochrane today.

Charlie Cochrane’s top ten Christmas things (in no particular order)

1.                 Anything with dried fruit in. Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, mince pies. *hyperventilates* I particularly like getting a mince pie, slipping off the lid, inserting a knob of blue cheese, replacing the lid, and warming the pie up. Delicious.

2.                 The Cochrane family Christmas quiz, as supplied by our eldest daughter. This is traditionally done after the Christmas dinner main course, while the pudding is cooking, and is as cut throat competitive as the Olympic 100m final. It has been known for people to try to nobble each other with excess alcohol.

3.                 In the run up to Christmas, helping with the local charity Christmas toy and gift project, putting together packages of goodies for children you’ll never meet but putting as much effort in as though you’ll be there when they open the presents!

4.                 Christmas lights. Whether on the tree or in the shopping centre, they make me go all gooey eyed. There is something magical about them, that takes me straight back to childhood.

5.                 Christmas markets. We’re lucky to have an excellent one near us at Winchester, but I have a particular fondness for the one by the cathedral in Exeter. May have something to do with the amazing quality of the food, including the best spiced nuts in the universe.

6.                 Arthur Christmas. I’ll fight anybody who doesn’t put this among their top ten seasonal films. Such wit, such warmth, such cleverness. And even though I’ve seen it a dozen times I still spot new details in the background. All hail the power of Aardman.

7.                 Animals, animals and more animals. Wherever one goes during Advent, there seem to be our furry friends, just sitting or standing and generally being adorable. From the reindeer who charmed us when we got our tree to the little snoring piglet at the Victorian event, they warm the cockles of my heart.

8.                 Christmas carols, whether I’m listening to them or singing along. I’ve always loved the traditional ones, especially O Come All Ye Faithful, but have recently discovered some newer ones, especially the marvelous works of John Rutter. The Shepherds’ Pipe Carol is stunning.

9.                 Sitting round the firepit with family – on Christmas day – or friends (usually on New Year’s eve) wrapped up in blankets, watching the stars come out and enjoying the chat or the silence equally.

10.            Bells – which is pretty appropriate given the book featuring here. Bells twinkling on the tree, bells tinkling on harnesses, or deeply resounding church bells working through an intricate peal. Especially church bells on a cold, clear night illuminated with stars.

Title: Wild Bells

Author: Charlie Cochrane
Genre: Two m/m historical romantic novellas

Blurbs:

The Shade on a Fine Day
Curate William Church may set the hearts of the parish's young ladies aflame, but he doesn't want their affection or presents, no matter how much they want to give them to him. He has his sights set elsewhere, for a love he's not allowed to indulge. One night, eight for dinner at the Canon's table means the potential arrival of a ghost. But what message will the spirit bring and which of the young men around the table is it for?

The Angel in the Window:
Two officers, one ship, one common enemy.
Alexander Porterfield may be one of the rising stars of the British navy, but his relationship with his first lieutenant, Tom Anderson, makes him vulnerable. To blackmail, to anxieties about exposure—and to losing Tom, either in battle or to another ship. When danger comes more from the English than the French, where should a man turn?

Excerpt:

Benjamin Swann couldn’t sleep at all. Dinner, excellent as it had been, lay heavy on his stomach, while thoughts oppressed his mind. He looked out over the fields, their thick coating of frost resembling snow in the moonlight. He loved winter, the white and grey tones, the clear light and sharp air all helping to bring his life into a clearer focus. Not that it needed to be brought much further into focus after tonight. He wandered down to the library, where a fire was always kept burning low on cold nights. He coaxed it into life, laying another log on, then found his favourite pack of cards, dealing out hands without thinking.
Queen of hearts. He considered the ladies sleeping in houses and cottages all over the parish, lost in dreams of suitors and admirers, then held the pack to his head in an attempt to cool his restless, guilty thoughts.
Queen of clubs. His sister too, not thirty yards up the stairs and along the corridor of the big house, asleep and no doubt dreaming, like the other maids who frequented St. Archibald’s, of a pair of blue eyes and a flashing smile.
Jack of hearts. The only decision William Church could make which wouldn’t disappoint any of them would be the offer of his hand.
Jack of spades. Well, whatever the man chose to do, there would be many a long face in the parish. Everyone with any sense had seen the risk of that eventuality from the moment the curate had arrived and swept the spinsters off their feet, and the likely number of potentially broken hearts seemed to increase weekly.
King of hearts. Only one person could win the man’s lasting affection—Benjamin was sure William was no cad and wouldn’t seek to play the field. Whether he’d be brave enough to go where Benjamin felt his conscience might lead him was another thing.
Joker. Why did life have to be so ridiculously complicated?

Author bio: Because Charlie Cochrane couldn't be trusted to do any of her jobs of choice—like managing a rugby team—she writes. Guest Author Day with Emerald Lavere

Emerald Lavere's "Top Ten"...Hotties!

Since My first two books are about women who enjoy a lot of husbands, I thought my Top Ten list should include some of the beautiful men that inspire my writing. Starting with eye candy who grabbed my attention more recently, and working down to my long term crushes:

10. Jared Haibon. This cutie pie from the last season of The Bachelorette is my most recent crush, sure to inspire a future character. Most likely a boy toy for an older woman. (sigh)

9.Jonathan Rhys Meyers. A huge part of the reason I am currently binge-watching The Tudors on Netflix. Could inspire a character with women lining up to his love slave.

8. Boris Kodjoe. If you haven't seen this flawless specimen of a male on The Last Man on Earth, you are missing out. I'm keeping this beauty in mind for future inspiration. Although, his sexy, deep voice is what I hear for my character Eltrion in A Wife for the Future.

7. Loki-Tom Hiddleson style. I know I'm really naming the character rather than the person, but Loki is that sexy bad man you know could turn it all around if he just met the right woman. When I picture the character's romance, someone is definitely getting tied up--in a good way.

6. Jensen Ackles. Dude is just super cute and irresistible. That boy next door that turns your life upside down.

5.Rob Lowe. I don't care how old that man gets, he is always going to be 100% beautiful!

4. Blair Underwood. (see Rob Lowe)

3. Cory Monteith. This is a sad one, and I didn't exactly have the hots for him because on Glee he seemed so much younger than his actual years. However, I wanted to include him on my list because I imagined him in my dream cast for The Wikomsette, for the role of Viktor. A MUCH different character than Finn on Glee, but he was the right physical type, and somehow I feel he could have done the part justice.

2. Joe Manganiello. While most may know him from True Blood, I first noticed him in Magic Mike. No, it wasn't the "Big D--- Richie"
dances, it was him with glasses at the sewing machine that got me worked up. What can I say? Glasses just do it for me.
I was halfway through writing The Wikomsette when I first saw "Joe Man" but after that, I couldn't NOT picture him as my character, Ax.

1. Tom Welling. Smallville's Clark Kent has long been a featured subject in my fantasy life. He inspired the lead in the first novel I ever wrote (still tucked away for future revamping) and was the inspiration for Niku in The Wikomsette.

A Wife for the Future (erotic sci-fi) (New release, 1/19/16)
Book 2 of The Wikomsette series
Published by Loose Id

A Wife for the Future (Blurb):

Ashling's never understood some of the oddities of her upbringing. But it all becomes clear when a family secret is revealed to her: her father is from the distant future. More than that, it's been predetermined that he will return to his native time on Ashling's twentieth birthday and she must go with him. Future society has a critical shortage of women and humanity is threatened with extinction.

Given time to recover from the shock and to prepare for a vastly different civilization, Ashling accepts her fate. A fate that requires that she take several husbands--and produce offspring to help prevent the human race from dying out. After her sheltered childhood with limited social interaction, Ashling finds herself aroused by the idea of having romantic partners for the first time in her life.

As soon as she's introduced to her prospective mates, feelings of being overwhelmed are quickly replaced by desire for the men who wish to court her. Ashling takes three husbands, reveling in the passion she shares with each of them. Life becomes one delicious encounter after another.

And then her father is accused of a crime, and the only man willing to help free him is the man Ashling wants most, and the one she may never have.

Excerpt:
Now I’m exhausted, and holding out to get through to the end, when at last the music changes for the final song. Number one hundred and fifty retreats, and I look with relief for the very last man of the day.
“Ahem, may I have the pleasure, Lady Ashling?”
I turn around and see Jules with a card in hand, waiting with that ever-present smile on his face, though now it seems more tentative than his usual grin, like he’s gauging my reaction. I’m not sure what to think. In the couple of days I’ve been here, he’s been a near-constant attendant, and I’ve come to think of him as friendly and likable. I hadn’t really thought of him romantically, but then again, I never saw him dressed to kill like he is tonight. He does look exceptionally handsome.
“Of course.” I step forward and reach up to place my hand on his shoulder. We’ve never been this close to each other, and I notice his scent for the first time. It’s warm with just a hint of spice. His hand slides gently across my back, and I feel a tingle in my spine. It’s different being this close to someone I’ve already gotten used to having around.
“How are you doing with all of this?” he asks.
I can’t suppress a smile. “Between you and me, I’m dead on my feet. So, if you can just kind of hold me up, that would be greatly appreciated.”
He laughs. “Of course, my lady.” He grips me a little tighter, and the tingle from my back makes its way lower. His other hand clasps mine.
I feel giddy. Maybe it’s because I’m deliriously tired, but also Jules is swinging me effortlessly across the dance floor and it feels a bit like flying.
“I didn’t know you would be one of the suitors tonight,” I say, just before his gaze flashes to something over my shoulder.
“Ahem, well, strictly speaking, I wasn’t on the scheduled guest list.”
“Oh?”
“And to that point, I’d best take my leave.” He steps back and takes my right hand in his. He bows and kisses the back of my hand with those sculpted and soft lips. Then he walks hastily away. I look over my shoulder and see two burly men coming toward me, working their way through the crowd.
