Hartford, Connecticut, 1661

A frigid wind slashed the outside of the building but the chill inside the dimly lit wooden church had little to do with the temperature. In the thick press of bodies, the smell of fear and anger assaulted my nose.

“Pray, pardon me.” I wormed my way deeper inside. Not a single compassionate glance or “Good morrow” came my way. The people who sat sermon with me and greeted me on the pathway a few days ago averted their gaze, tone hushed.

My father, coward, refused to attend the trial. Earlier in the morning, I’d asked him to bear witness to this day, but he claimed to be too ashamed of his family, meeting my gaze purposefully with his own.

When most attendees had seated themselves, jammed together on benches like barnacles, the minister glowered and declared, “It’s time.” He pointed. “Repent your wicked and reviling acts for your soul’s salvation.”

My mother hunched in the gloom, halfway hidden behind a burly guard. The man’s hand crushed her slight shoulder before she slid to the ground like a rag doll, exhaustion and pain creeping over her face and frail body. The audience gasped but for reasons other than the jailer’s brutality. They believed her collapse proved the devil.

The preacher hammered my mother with his words. “There is light in the darkness, Martha. Be repentant for the sins of your life. Ask forgiveness from God. Admit the devil afflicted you and commanded you to unleash wickedness on our community, and your soul can be free in death.”

“I’ve done nothing.” Mother’s gaze found mine in the last pew. Her once beautiful auburn hair, which rarely strayed from its cap, fell lank and greasy around her face.

“You have been a practitioner of poisoning in hand and deed, but in God’s house, no devil has power.” The minister’s voice boomed; his chin raised to the heavens. “It is the only way to possible salvation.”

Blinking back the tears forming, I knotted my hands. “Please stop this. I promise my soul, my life, anything demanded of me.” No one heard my whisper of pain. “If you exist, show yourself and give this horrible congregation something to fear.”

Those prayers elicited no response from the heavens. The two small, low-set windows failed to remove the shadows and darkness extending beyond the rafters and into the congregation.

“God will cast the wicked into Hell. He can most easily do so, and you will be next unless you tell the truth before all your brethren in attendance.”

His words were drowned in a cacophony of outrage from the spectators who packed the pews for this horrible show.

I stepped forward.

An almost imperceptible shake of my mother’s head slowed my feet.

Last week, on the only occasion Father allowed me to visit Mother in jail, she’d begged me to avoid her, fearing for my life. Heart empty, I had questioned if there was life waiting for me with her gone—she, the only person who loved me in this world. Her tormented sobs made me regret those words.

Clamoring voices thickened the air as her trial dragged. Someone in town had to stand up for her. Instead, the crowd grew louder and angrier. Few still loved and wished to protect her. And, no doubt, my former friends would happily turn me over to the minister if I said or did anything here.

Rumors about my mother started in the late summer. After church one day, our neighbor Bridget complained of stomach pains. My mother had sent me to her house with tea, but the herbs meant to help had only made it worse.

In Hartford, Connecticut, when a problem occurred, everyone prayed, but prayers often didn’t reach heaven, and divine intervention seldom arrived. My mother and her knowledge of natural remedies had been a quiet aid to the community for years. No one had said a word against it.

Even my father had allowed it.

However, Bridget’s condition worsened, and a fever struck her the day after she drank the tea. Not a week later, she died, arms and legs flailing without consent, screams of pain echoing from her house for all to hear. My mother had been restricted to our home first, then jailed until her trial.

Bridget’s death brought rumors of witchcraft to my door, and now, not even six months later, shouts of anger and fear assaulted the walls and my ears.

“You deserve to be cast into hell.” The words heaved from my neighbors like boulders. “Witch. Devil’s spawn.”

My mother’s desperate glance revealed the true horror of the ordeal; a stark contrast to the minister next to her and the pudgy magistrate who sat high on a bench, shrouded in black robes and stern expressions.

Bridget’s friends and family stood and faced the crowd as they recounted her illness and the supposed potion my mother provided that led the girl first to the devil and then to death.

It had only been dandelion tea. I’d helped prepare the draught, but fear of the community and that I’d be next to my mother in jail clamped my lips shut.

The flickering candlelight turned the magistrate, perched on his bench by the altar, into a demon. This man had been a guest in our home not only to share the word of God but to ask my mother for a cure for his headaches.

“You’re accused of witchcraft,” he said. “How do you plead?”

“I’m innocent. I never practiced witchcraft. I swear it on my soul.” My mother turned to Bridget’s parents when the room had quieted. “I’m no witch. I swear by all that is Godly. I’m innocent of all you proclaim.”

Charity, a friend of Bridget’s, spoke. “She bewitched Bridget and made her suffer. All should have witnessed the horror of her last moments. Her lips fumbled to make a sound, teeth gnashing and mouth foaming. Her body trembled and shook before her limbs flailed, unable as she was to control them.”

“Do you deny the accusations of witchcraft against you?” the magistrate asked.

“I’m a God-fearing woman, and I’ve harmed no one.”

My push forward parted air thickened with tension and sweat.

“The evidence against you is abundant,” the magistrate said. “You’re wicked. A consort with the devil. All to spell innocent people. Your potions and teas are well known in town. You deserve to be cast thither. Under the law of a righteous God, your eternal soul shall be condemned to hell.”

“I have done nothing wrong other than use what God has provided in nature. I’m innocent. This I swear in His name.”

The crowd reared like the head of a snake, the hiss loud and damning.

I bit my thumbnail to hold back a scream, and an iron tang met my tongue.

“Do not profane his name.” The magistrate called the minister over, and their conversation lasted less than a minute, but it felt like an eternity.

“You’ve been found guilty of witchcraft. The sentence of the court is death by hanging. Let this be a warning to all. The devil stands ready to seize our souls as his own.”

“I’ll die guiltless.” My mother yelped when the guard squeezed her arm to silence her.

The crowd held me back. Their slurs stalled me as much as their bodies. As they herded me out of the church, I reached out to touch my mother but stumbled as those gathered pressed back to the jail. My cry filled the air, unable as I was to offer support.

The sting of my last chance at a goodbye nettled.

Talking with Eliza Hampstead

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main character(s) and what can we expect when we pick it up?

The Nephilim’s Fate, is the first in a four-part series, War of the Nephilim. The story revolves around Alissia, a witch, and Nate, a Nephilim, as they are thrown into a world filled with magic, ancient prophecies, and forbidden love. Alissia has a fierce determination to prove that the old text are wrong so she can be with the man of her dreams, and Nate is torn between duty and his growing feelings for her. Together, they must navigate the tensions between their people while facing a greater threat. Expect fast-paced action, steamy romance, and a deep dive into the complex worlds of witches, Nephilim, and magic.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

Funny thing—my stories usually begin with a tension-filled, spicy scene. I build from there by asking questions about the conflict. In "Nephilim's Fate," the initial concept centered around the scene where Alissia and Nate first meet. They are unable to kiss, which led me to question why that was the case. I realized that Nate had to be a Nephilim, so I decided that Alissia would be a witch. But why are Nephilim and witches forbidden to be together? An ancient text prohibits their union. This raised further questions: who wrote this ancient text, and what motivated them to do so? And so on. That concept evolved into the world-building and central conflict between their characters.

Which of your characters would you want to share a campfire with, and why?

Oh, definitely all of them! I’d want to sit with the Nephilim to ask all my burning questions about magic and the ancient world. Andrew (from book two) would be great to geek out with over fantasy and comic books. And Victorija (from book three) – I’d ask her about her incredible past, her secrets, and the depth of what she’s experienced. It would be fascinating to hear their stories firsthand.

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy in your spare time?

Right now, I’m deep into research on life in a medieval castle for my upcoming time-travel romance. When I finish, I have a massive TBR list of about 400 books (mostly fantasy romances). I absolutely love V.E. Schwab’s works—her storytelling always pulls me in, and I try to keep up with every book she publishes.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

I start by imagining where the characters are at the beginning of the story and where I want them to end up. Then, I throw challenges their way to see how they grow. It’s a bit like being a dungeon master in a role-playing game like Dungeons & Dragons—you create obstacles and watch how the characters respond and evolve. The characters in my head have minds of their own sometimes, so I let them take the lead. By the end of the book, they’ve developed enough to handle situations very differently from when they started.

How do you handle feedback and criticism from readers and reviewers?

I’m torn about this. I love getting positive feedback, of course! But when I receive negative reviews, it can really bring me down. However, I try to look at criticism as a way to improve my craft. Constructive feedback, even when it stings, helps me get better with each book. My goal is to continually grow as a writer, so I try to take criticism in stride and use it to make my future works stronger.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you're currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

After finishing the War of the Nephilim series, I’m diving into a time-travel romance that has been simmering in my mind for the last ten years. I’m really excited about this one, and I plan to publish it in early 2025. Readers can expect a blend of history, romance, and the element of time travel, with all the tension and emotional depth I love to write.

Talking with Janae

Q: How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

A: Oh I knew my story needed a metropolis that was as urban as it could get. I knew I was also going to make it up too.

Q: What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book, The Witches Prophecy?

A: A witch/assassin is tasked to save the world from a primordial being named Chaos or the world will face an apocalypse all while falling for her best friend of 7 years.

Q: Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A: I always edit as I draft or I’ll go crazy. I’m a perfectionist and when I can’t get something right I will stay up all night until that is taken care of.

Q: Describe your writing space/office!

A: Right now I live with my daughter so I work in her bedroom at her desk. It’s a nice quiet space and I put on headphones to be whisked away to my worlds.

Q: What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A: Well I am Keto so most normal food is an indulgence. I like to allow myself to have “normal” food like etouffee which is my favorite food.

Q: What’s your favorite genre to read?

A: Fantasy.

Q: What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

A:  Hmm. That’s a hard one. I don’t watch TV anymore and I haven’t gone to a movie in 7 years. I recommend watching Rick and Morty for stress situations. It’s a good stress reliever. I read a good book for craft which is called How to Self Edit Your Novel (highly recommend) and anything by Yasmine Galenorn.

Q: What do you do when you have free time?

A: I don’t have a lot of free time lol. But when I do I watch a lot of Youtube and Rick and Morty. Other than that I have been reading or creating merch.

Q: What are three words that describe your Main Characters?

A:  Strong, flawed and badass

Q: What can readers expect from you next?

A: I am currently writing a serial series called The Lunar Prophecy Series. I have already put out Bound by the Blood Moon and Eclipse of Fate. I am working on the third. I am having a giveaway too for each rapid release of the series which is every three-four weeks. Go to my website for more information. And I’m about to offer merch for the series. Guest Author Day with Kelli Wilkins

Straddling the Line Between Paranormal Romance & Horror

By Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

Greetings Romance Lovers!

It’s October, and Halloween is right around the corner. At this time of year, horror movies are extremely popular and everyone is focusing on the supernatural. Werewolves, vampires, and other “creatures of the night” seem to be lurking everywhere, just waiting to leap out and terrify an unsuspecting heroine…

But sometimes the heroine isn’t terrified. Sometimes she’s attracted to a vampire and can’t wait for the sun to go down so they can roam the night together, like any couple. That is, any couple in a paranormal romance.

Paranormals are a unique genre in the romance world. (Where else can a woman make love to an undead creature and not face criticism?) They straddle the line between traditional romances and the supernatural/fantasy/horror realm. And to create a convincing paranormal romance, the author has to do a bit of juggling in all of those worlds.

One of the most important elements in writing paranormal romances is to invent a believable universe where shifters, vampires, and other types of “otherworldly” characters are very real. Sometimes these creatures interact and coexist with “normal” humans (everyday people accept that vampires and shapeshifters exist), but most times they stay hidden in the shadows.

Whatever the basic premise, readers need to suspend their disbelief and lose themselves in the world the author has created. The writer has to establish a realistic paranormal character (or several) and take the reader on an exciting journey with the hero and heroine as they fall in love. After all, this is a romance!

The type of paranormal character who stars in the story is key to the plot, and can vary from nearly human to full-fledged monster.

For example, suppose the hero was once human and has been cursed to live as another creature (such as a Bigfoot, or a gargoyle). Can the curse be broken if he finds a human woman to love him? How does he go about that? Does he retain his human memories? Is the woman repulsed by him at first? Do they make love while he’s in his altered state? Variations on this “beauty and the beast” theme have been used in many paranormal romances, and usually there is a happy-ever-after ending for the couple.

But maybe the hero is an undead creature (a vampire) or turns into an animal (a werewolf or a werepanther). How does this change his personality and way of life? Does he resent humans and live with others of his kind? What does he do when he’s not transformed? How (and why) does he transform? What happens when he reveals his true nature to his beloved? How do they live happily-ever-after?

As you can see, falling in love with a non-human can create a lot of conflict and difficulties for the couple. And sometimes it’s a challenge for the author to make the “monster” into a romantic lead.

Even though the hero isn’t human, he must have a special appeal that makes the heroine overlook this fact and fall in love with him. Basically, the hero-creature has to remain true to his paranormal status and still be attractive to humans (and human readers), just like a traditional romance hero. (If not, then he’s the lead in a horror story, and that’s an entirely different realm.)

If the author doesn’t create a believable paranormal hero, readers won’t buy into it, and there certainly won’t be any sparks flying in the romance. Writers must make the “monster” as real as any other human character and flesh him out completely with a backstory, goals, motivation, and conflicts.

Another challenge for the author is to keep a balance between the paranormal elements and the romance. There needs to be realistic supernatural details added to the love story, but the author can’t gross out (or turn off) the heroine… or readers.

If a paranormal romance includes too much violence or gore, it could turn into a horror story. (In fact, with a little bit of rewriting, practically any paranormal romance could be transformed into a dark and disturbing horror tale.) To avoid this, the author has to find a way to deal with the bloodier or unpleasant aspects of being a monster, while still keeping the hero attractive.

For example, if the hero is a vampire, he’ll have to feed at some point during the story. The writer and the other characters must address this. How does the heroine deal with her boyfriend’s need to drink blood? Does she accept it? Ignore it? Does he feed “off page” where she can’t see? Does she ever let him feed off her? What if he loses control and goes wild?

These are all crucial things the author has to consider when developing characters and plotting a paranormal love story. Readers want to fall in love with a “safe” creature and live vicariously through the heroine as she navigates the paranormal world. But the monster/hero shouldn’t be dull or boring, or too predictable, either.

It’s always refreshing when authors break patterns and have paranormal characters go against stereotype. (Why do all vampires have to be suave, live in large houses, and dress well?) When I write paranormal romances, I always try to give readers something unexpected, turn a clichĂ© on its ear, or use a different point of view to liven up the story.

In Killer in Wolf’s Clothing, my “werewolf” didn’t turn into a four-legged animal; he became a super-aggressive Alpha male. Beauty & the Bigfoot is a paranormal comedy that explores the legend of Bigfoot through quirky characters (and some hot love scenes!).

Rothgar, the hero in The Viking’s Witch doesn’t believe the heroine has witchlike powers—until she proves it. Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover is told in first person from the hero’s point of view and takes place at the beach—and that’s not where you expect to find a vampire. Eddie, my “ghost cop” from In Another World has a lot of supernatural talents most ghosts don’t— including the ability to pull the living into an alternate realm—and make love to the heroine!

As Halloween approaches, take a closer look at the “monsters” and other supernatural creatures you encounter. But don’t be afraid… you might just fall in love with one of them!

Here’s the summary and links to In Another World, my latest paranormal romance.

Book Review: Legacy by Gail Z. Martin

Legacy (Deadly Curiosities Series Book 5)
Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Action Packed, Mystery
Buy Link Here

Omens are having the city of Charleston on edge and as Cassidy, Teag and the gang find out, something supernatural is coming their way. A dark witch dynasty, two ghostly privateers and an elemental spirit hell-bent on getting revenge are all that face Cassidy, Teag and Sorren as they battle not just for themselves but also for the world as they try to stay ahead of what is stalking them. Danger abounds and as the gang from Trifles and Folly find out, the past has something in store for them that even they will be shocked to know.

My Rating for Legacy: 4.5 Stars and a Series Recommended Read

My Review for Legacy:

LEGACY is a wonderful addition to the Deadly Curiosities series and one I devoured in a matter of days after rereading the first 4 books. I love how you can just pick any book in the series, and you won’t be confused over anything as each book really stands on its own, but I do recommend reading it in order as each book capitalizes on one another. This time, Cassidy and the gang are up against something they never had to deal with, an immortal elemental who is determined to get their revenge on the two privateers who held her captive for a very long time. With each page the reader is drawn into the world of the Deadly Curiosities and how each character’s magic and strength is about to be tested in ways they were not anticipating.

This series delivers all my happy notes: action, amazing characters, unique magic, intriguing mysteries that run the gauntlet of things and more. All this is my catnip, so to speak and I just love how LEGACY delivers all that and more. With this newest addition to the series, the reader is taken on a journey that is filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Ms. Martin delivers more within these pages than ever before, and I can not wait to see if she continues this series in either novella or novel format in the future. There is so much potential to have other things crop in Charleston that I am eager as ever to see where the author goes with the characters and the series.

If you are looking for a wild, action-packed paranormal series to devour, I highly recommend the Deadly Curiosities series to you. Its fun, has humor, some romance and a mystery that leaves you guessing till the end. Now the question is, can we get more?

This is an objective review and not an endorsement

“Careful! That box is already spelled! Anything could happen if you mix them up,” I shouted at my triplet Star, who was paying me no mind, just moving things haphazardly around as she ‘dusted’ the shelves of the Tea & Tarot cafĂ©.

Star twitched her whole body into a pretend robot, her blonde curls bouncing when she dime-stopped her limbs in an abrupt series of motions. It was a lightning change of mood that had become far too common of late. I gave a deep sigh of frustration I didn’t bother to hide. She’d been getting worse by the day, antsy no doubt for The Call. Darn movie people. Telling her she had a role, then delaying production.

“Oh, really.” Okay, she was good at the robot dance, I’d give her that, if a job ever asked for such a dubious ability. But that didn’t stop me from rushing forward to rescue the Promise Bags. They held the precious trinkets of all the females around town who were participating in the upcoming Sadie Hawkins dance. Each midnight blue velvet bag had been magically infused with a specific wish, ranging from a marriage proposal to a spa vacation. Mix up those babies and all Hades will break loose, because this year the items had been blessed under the decade’s most awesome supermoon.

Maybe that’s a bad idea? I chewed on a fingernail while I worried about going too far in my overwhelming urge to have my fellow goddesses receive their fair due from men who did not always appreciate them. Men could be so lame sometimes, not reading the signals right under their very noses, though that did not appear to be the case with our local Mountie, Ace Collins. He could be a little too astute at times. Goddess, give me the strength…

The emotive notes of a musical instrument native to Scotland, one that defied the noise ordinance of Snowy Lake, broke through my worry fog.

Auntie T.J.

I set the rescued box safely aside on a shelf and scurried toward the huge picture window of the Tea & Tarot café to where Tulip sat perched on a stool. The third triplet of our McCall clan, she was a matching bookend to Star, which made them both polar opposites to me with my Elizabeth Taylor-esque violet-colored eyes and dark hair. Or at least according to Granny Toogood, who loved her old movies.

Tulip was keyboarding as per usual on her computer, working either on her ongoing blog posts or selling our newly rolled out ‘potcakes’ to the Canadian masses. I sent a silent prayer to the goddess that the extra revenue the items were supposed to bring in happened. We’d invested in producing cannabutter to add to our spectacular line-up of bakery goods, and to think it might go to waste if the idea didn’t catch on induced serious heart palpitations. And that just isn’t right when a gal’s only twenty-one years old.

“Shoot! What’s Auntie T.J. up to now?”

“She only brings out the big guns when she feels threatened,” Tulip said. “See, Sergei McCausland.” She pointed at the business owner our auntie was serenading with her warmongering.

The town hound dog owned the Bowl-a-ram-a, the five-pin bowling alley tucked away at the outskirts of town, which was located a hop, skip and a jump from our café, Snowy Lake being so small with only twelve hundred and fifty-nine residents, that I could run across it quicker than I could be bothered to start up my Jeep, Thor.

Though that had been changing somewhat of late with the arrival of Constable Collins and his annoying active pursuit of law and order. Sheriff Winn Duffy was more beloved of course, having turned a blind eye for decades, but the new Mountie was gaining ground. Did I share that he’s a handsome devil?

Molly is in trouble. Running away from home to escape the dangers of her coven, she ends up in Edinburgh at a time of Corona. Homeless and running for her life, she must find a new coven and get the help she needs to protect herself, or she is not going to make it back.

Read a Blog Entry:

April 14

Yesterday, I finally met another witch.

Her name is Gemma. She’d just graduated from nursing school and was volunteering to help out with testing patients for the virus.

I had seen her on the street, falling on her knee, while walking a dog, and her body magically heal the wound. I walked to her to ask if she was alright, coming close, but still pretending to keep that two meter distance.

“Just a scratch,” she assured me, and got up without help.

The dog was being difficult and kept pulling even when she was still on the ground. I offered to help and take the leash, but she shook her head. He was a friend’s dog, but they were self-isolating so he was stuck at home all day. She was trying to show patience.

I told her that we had a dog back home and that she was also finding it difficult. She asked where I was from and the conversation flowed from there.

We must have walked together for about half an hour before I felt she could be trusted. I was not about to make the same mistake twice.

She told me that there were many witches in the city, some solitary and others belonging to covens. Luckily for me, she was one of the later, and she invited me to the next coven meeting. We exchanged numbers.

I still couldn’t sleep right at night. Even after that ray of hope.

There was no accommodation anywhere and I must have checked five times. Apartments were difficult too. I could forge the documents for the lease, but I would still have to open a real bank account, and get some sort of job, which was dangerous, because I might have to expose my true identity. Even to Gemma, I gave a different last name. Wood, instead of Evans.

I ended up back in the forest under Arthur’s Seat, in my tent spell, that failed to really make me feel safe, despite the conjured mattress and warmth.

I hate being homeless.

In the morning, I felt I needed to move my legs, after all those nights of troubled sleep. I went up Carlton Hill. That place in the photos where people go to get a view of the whole city.

A message from my moms, from last night, reminded me of the dangers I had ran away from. It came from Sally, my birth-mother, who was usually high spirited, and perhaps one of the happiest people I’d known in my life. But from the tone of her note I could tell that she was worried.

Two witches from May’s coven had been seen outside the house. When my mom, Joe, came out to talk with them they left a message for me. Alice wanted to speak with me. Urgently.

“Keep safe,” was the end of Sally’s message.

I had promised myself that I wouldn’t cry, but the past few days had been so difficult.

When I reached the top and looked down at this beautiful city, the frustration, the fear and the exhaustion of the past few days hit me like a boomerang, and I couldn’t stop the tears anymore.
