Book Spotlight~ Sean Michael's Bruised

Bruised_SeanMichael_BlogTour_600x315_final

Inspiration

Inspiration can come from anywhere, you just need to be open to it. I’ve had stories come from overheard snippets of conversation, the wording of submission calls, visits to sex toy sites (for research, I swear – my story, sticking to it), people I see on the street. Seriously, the characters and their stories can come from anywhere.

And I do love to people watch. Whether on the bus, in a store or restaurant, walking down the street. There’s inspiration around every corner and I keep my eyes and ears open for it. You never know when something is going to spark a character (or when that character is going to spark a series!)

For Bruised in particular, the inspiration came from this man I saw. Just a glimpse, that’s all that was needed. But I saw him and thought to myself, man that skin would bruise beautifully. And so Billy was born. Sometimes something like that needs to percolate, but this time around, Billy showed up in my brain pretty much immediately and it didn’t take long for Johnson to arrive in my head to claim Billy as his own.

As to where the inspiration for Johnson comes from, that I can’t remember. I imagine that once Billy showed, up, Johnson was percolated from a variety of sources that I wasn’t conscious of.

Here’s what Johnson thinks when he gets his first good look at Billy.

Excerpt:
“Thank you, sir.” Billy headed in, which gave him a nice look at a tight little ass in tight little jeans. “I love going to trial, love the work, but the new guy bullshit, here call this guy, here file this deposition, here suck this ass thing? Gets old. Gets real old.”
“Funny, I never minded sucking ass.” Johnson winked and pointed out a table near the bar that was empty. It was busy enough that it boded well for the food even without Billy’s recommendation.
Billy started chuckling, cheeks pinking, sunglasses coming off. “Good to know. I don’t mind—if the ass in question isn’t an ancient, dried up skinny straight guy’s. Those? So ruin a good tongue.”
Johnson laughed, thinking that little splash of color looked good on Billy. “That definitely sounds nasty.”
The cowboy took off his hat, baring a head with hair cut so short it looked clear. The denim jacket was shrugged off, too, exposing a tight little body, pecs and abs clear and defined under the shirt. “No shit, Mr Bird. It is a scary situation.”
“I’ll bet. How long does the yucky ass sucking last before you’re not the new guy anymore?” Johnson figured Billy was definitely his type. Sitting, Billy spread his legs wide. Just look at that package… Most definitely his type. Johnson was glad he’d waited a moment to sit—he’d have hated to miss this view. He took one last look and sat across from Billy.
Those blue eyes shone at him, twinkling.

Blurb for Bruised:

Johnson and Billy come from different parts of the country, different backgrounds and different places in their lives. Maybe different is exactly what they both need.

Johnson figures it’s got to be a sign when cowboy Billy shows up at his garage after hours, just as he’s about to go find someone to spend the night with. He’s horny enough that a lot of guys would look good, but Billy seems special somehow.

Billy thinks Johnson’s the hottest ticket he’s seen since he moved to California from Texas, and after a good meal and some good fun, he takes Johnson home. They both find out they’re getting more than they bargained for. Can Johnson and Billy figure out why they feel so connected and can they make it last once reality sets back in?

Publisher's Note: This book was previously released by another publisher. It has been revised and re-edited for release with Totally Bound Publishing.

About Sean Michael:

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organising his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channelling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago".

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

Discover What's His Passion? with Bailey Bradford and enter to win a great prize

Totally Bound has a brand new Imprint out, What’s his Passion? and I am thrilled to be a part of it! My contribution is Unexpected Places, a story featuring Carter Hausemann, a man who is passionate about hiking.

To celebrate the launch of What’s his Passion? Totally Bound are giving away a bundle of prizes. Enter here for your chance to win:

Blurb for Unexpected Places:
Love finds you in the most unexpected places.

Carter Hausemann loves his adventures in the great outdoors. He never feels as free and happy as he does when he’s hiking up a mountain or over a desert trail. After a childhood spent locked indoors, he craves the sunlight on his face and the blanket of moonlight.

Unfortunately, he has to work, so his hiking trips aren’t as frequent as he would like.

He has a new adventure planned, but little does he know, his real adventure will start at a worn-down looking club in Odessa, Texas. Carter’s dreams of finding his perfect men will become more than fantasy, starting with one sexy leather-clad man, Eddie Canales. What starts out as a night of debauchery turns into so much more.

Excerpt:

“Are you ready for your trip? This one’s going to be different from your usual day-hikes out here. Think this will be a big adventure?” Becca asked him. She pressed the button for the ground floor.
Carter smiled warmly at her. He liked his boss, was glad to be working on her team. “Hopefully it will be, yeah, though not the get-eaten-by-a-bear kind of adventure. As to being ready, almost. I’m quite excited about the weekend trip exploring parts of Big Bend. I’ve been wanting to see it ever since I moved here.”
“You just have to pack,” Mark added, eyeing him as if gauging whether or not Carter had lied about that.
“Exactly,” Carter agreed. “I was given a list of recommended supplies for the trip after I signed up for it. This’ll be my first weekend hike there. I’ve been all over New Mexico and Colorado.”
Becca turned to him, effectively cutting Mark out of the conversation. “You know, your enthusiasm is inspiring. I think I’ll talk to Lee about taking the kids hiking soon. Plus, the exercise will do us all some good. Let me know what you think about Big Bend.”
Carter nibbled his bottom lip, running through what he did know. The elevator reached the ground floor. The doors opened and Mark hovered. Carter focused on Becca. “After you.”
She started forward and he followed, asking her, “How old are your kids?”
Mark’s annoyed huff was amusing to hear.
Becca waited for Carter. “They’re teenagers, so lots of whining.”
Carter laughed and was relieved to see Mark march past them to the front doors. “Oh come on, I bet they aren’t that bad.”
Becca harrumphed and they walked together to the exit. Carter held the door for her, as he would have done for anyone else.
Becca thanked him and their conversation resumed outside in the waning sunlight. “They are. I swear, I don’t remember being so annoying at those ages, but I’m sure my parents would disagree.”

About Bailey
A few things about me…

I am a married to a lovely man who supports everything I do and encourages me to be myself. I am also a mom who spends most of the day writing, either on stories for books or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick to me and be irritating.

And it’s really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I’ll just let y’all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there’s something specific you’d like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio.

Welcome Chris Quinton

Please give a warm welcome to author Chris Quinton who dropped in to chat with me.

To get us started can you tell us a little about what you are working on or have coming out?

- My latest release is Carlyle's Crossing from Total-E-Bound, a paranormal m/m mystery romance set in contemporary Vermont.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?

- LOL! Um, yes, a few - mainly wine and dark chocolate [as long as it's 85% plus cocoa content]. Despite being a Type 2 Diabetic, I'm allowed both in small amounts.

If we asked your muse to describe you using five words, what do you think they would say?

-  Obsessive writer, too easily distracted.

What is coming up from you in 2013? Anything you want to tease us with?

- Melusine's Cats. This is a paranormal series set in North Devon, centering on the water entity, Melusine, and her agents who take on a feline form. They interfere in the lives of the people who live along her river. The first is titled Greymalkin.

When you begin your stories, do you go with the flow, or go with an outline?

- A bit of both. Usually it starts off as a scene or a snatch of conversation in my head, then I have to work out the who and the why. I rough out a plot arc, but more often than not, it will veer off into uncharted territory.

Is it hard coming up with titles or characters names?

- No, not usually. I'm very careful with both, but especially names. They and their meanings are important. I like to get the title set as soon as possible - it helps to ground the story in my head, and I don't feel settled into the story until I have a title that feels right to me.

Is there any books coming that you are itching to read (either electronic or print)from your favorite authors?

- The latest in CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series - She is possibly my all-time favorite author in the SF and Fantasy fields. And the next Dresden book from Jim Butcher.

Jubal must face a primordial evil with only an ancient flint knife, two ancestral spirits and Sal at his side. If he fails, more than lives are lost.

Jubal is the last Carlyle, and lives near Seattle, far away from his Abenaki ancestors. A letter from a lawyer draws him and his best friend, Sal, to Vermont and the town of Whitewater. Soon they are right in the middle of the old conflict that drove Jubal's parents away just before his birth.

Whitewater is suffering and not just from the economic downturn. Unleashed by one man's obsession to call back the spirit of his dead wife, and by the well-meaning but flawed actions of another, dark forces are bringing depression and hopelessness.

Jubal's father had neither the talent nor the wish to attempt the task of driving back the incursion, but Jubal knows he has to try. He must find a way to reverse the process before the malaise spreads. But he has no knowledge, no training, just instinct - and Sal. Always Sal, who is rapidly becoming far more than a friend with benefits. The dangers they face are insidious, and more than their lives and sanity are at risk.

EXCERPT

Chapter One

“Was wondering when you were going to wake up,” said the voice.

Since his head currently felt as if an axe was embedded in it, coherent thinking wasn’t an option. Jubal managed a slurred, “Shut up,” and tried to open his eyes. It didn’t happen. His lids seemed to be glued shut. Not that it fully registered with him. The mere effort had been enough to send the pain soaring to a new level.

“You don’t want to think about moving just yet.” The deep voice sounded wryly amused. Jubal decided he hated the guy, whoever he was. “You got a minute or so.”

“Wha…?” he groaned. At the same time he became aware of bruising pressure across his chest and legs. A hard and jagged cage-like something enclosed his body. He heard the pings of cooling metal, the steady drip-drip of leaking gasoline. Smelt it as well. Not good. His memory surged back in a nauseating rush.

He’d been returning home after his shift at the forest ranger station, looking forward to getting out of the deluge that hadn’t let up all day, and into a hot shower. Friday night with the rain lashing down, he’d had the back roads leading from Seattle’s Capitol State Forest to himself. Until a deer had come out of nowhere, dashed in front of him in a flash of glistening wet hide and black eyes. He’d slammed on his brakes and—nothing at all after that.

“You don’t want to hurl either,” the man said. “Trust me.”

“Help me, for fuck’s sake!” Jubal snarled. He tried to raise his right arm so he could scrub at his eyes, but the pain struck again and he nearly passed out.

“Can’t.” The man didn’t sound regretful, just matter-of-fact. “You gotta do it yourself. And if I was you, I’d start right about now. Bastard’s struck a match.”

“Mother-fuck—” A faint crackling sound started up and another smell assaulted his nostrils. Something was burning.

Panic exploded through Jubal in a scorching tide. He tried to simultaneously shove off whatever was pinning him, roll over and get to his feet. He failed at all three. The agony was oddly distant, but the whoosh of flames and heat was not. His fear became a savage beast that clawed at his brain, at any vestige of self-control that remained. There was only the all-consuming need to be somewhere else—

Something tore deep inside him and Jubal howled. He must have blacked out for a while, because the next thing he knew the biting weight had gone from his body and his arms were free. Rain pattered on his upturned face, sliding its chilled fingers across his skin. He had just enough time to register the texture of the earth and grass beneath him before the gas tank exploded. A wave of heat scooped him up and dropped him into a puddle.

About the Author...

Chris started creating stories not long after she mastered joined-up writing, somewhat to the bemusement of her parents and her English teachers. But she received plenty of encouragement. Her dad gave her an already old Everest typewriter when she was ten, and it was probably the best gift she'd ever received – until the inventions of the home-computer and the worldwide web.

Chris's reading and writing interests range from historical, mystery, and paranormal, to science-fiction and fantasy, writing mostly in the male/male genre. She also writes male/female novels in the name of Chris Power. She refuses to be pigeon-holed and intends to uphold the long and honourable tradition of the Eccentric Brit to the best of her ability. In her spare time [hah!] she embroiders, quilts and knits. Over the years she has been a stable lad [briefly] in a local racing stable and stud, a part-time and unpaid amateur archaeologist, a civilian clerk at her local police station and a 15th century re-enactor.

She lives in a small and ancient city not far from Stonehenge in the south-west of the United Kingdom, and shares her usually chaotic home with an extended family, two hyperactive dogs and sundry goldfish [the psychotic but geriatric mice have gone to The Great Cheese In The Sky].

Welcome Lisabet Sarai

Meet Cecily Harrowsmith by Lisabet Sarai

Hello, everyone! I'm delighted to be here at Dawn's place. When I signed up for this coveted spot, Dawn told me I could do either an interview or a post. I thought a while and decided to do an interview – but not a personal interview. Instead I'd like to introduce you to Miss Cecily Harrowsmith, the heroine of my new steampunk/shapeshifter/BDSM/ménage/Rubenesque erotic romance novel Rajasthani Moon. Cecily is quite a handful – both literally and figuratively. Voluptuously endowed, half-British/half-Ceylonese, covert operative for the powerful British Empire, Cecily speaks ten languages, is expert in the martial arts of three continents, and has been the mistress of princes, potentates and the occasional prime minister. In Rajasthani Moon this formidable woman meets her match in the form of Rajah Amir, the kinky genius who rules Rajasthan, and his sexy bandit half-brother Pratan.

But I should probably let Cecily speak for herself.

LS: What do you like best about being a spy?

CH: You are jesting, are you not? Espionage is not the glamorous and exciting career most imagine. It involves weeks of boring research, endless, uncomfortable travel to godforsaken spots at the corners of the Empire, and constant personal danger. I can trust no one. I must depend only upon my own resources. It's a lonely and difficult occupation.

LS:  Come now, Miss Harrowsmith. There must be some part of the job you enjoy.

CH: Well, it does give me the opportunity to escape London and its miserable weather. (chuckles) Honestly, if I did not believe my services were essential to Her Majesty, I'd resign in a trice.

LS: But if you hadn't accepted the mission to Rajasthan, you wouldn't have met Pratan. Surely you don't regret that.

CH: Well, that depends on how hard he spanked me the previous night. (chuckles again) No, you're right. I'm certainly not lonely anymore. Pratan is more of a challenge, both physically and intellectually, then any of my past adversaries.

LS: Adversary? A strange word to use for your lover. You do love him, right?

CH: Of course I love him. I wouldn't have risked my life to free him from the witch's curse otherwise. However, you cannot change a man's nature. Pratan will always have a wild streak. (pauses to think) Perhaps that is part of the reason I love him.

LS: And what about his brother Amir?

CH: As sexy a snake as I've ever encountered. Between the two of them – well, let me just say that they're a dangerous and seductive combination.

LS: Between the two of them... are you being literal?

CH: Ms. Sarai, this is a PG-rated blog post. I really can't be more specific.

LS: Um – okay. Let me change the subject. When you were captured and imprisoned in Mehrangarh Fort, secured by hi tech bondage that would kill you the instant you set foot outside the fortress walls – did you think you'd escape?

CH: Without a doubt. I knew I would uncover some critical item of information that would provide the key to my release, and indeed, that to be proved true. That is, after all, the most essential qualification for a spy, the ability to uncover hidden information. And, with all due modesty, I'm very good at that task.

LS: Given your success with this mission, I guess I'd have to agree. I have one more question, perhaps a bit delicate. Based on your experiences in Rajasthan, I'd say you are obviously a woman with a strong libido. Do you view this as an asset or a liability in your professional life?

CH: To be blunt - I don't know, and I really don't care. I am who I am – naturally sensual. Unusually sensitive, perhaps, to erotic stimuli. I'm an adventurous woman, as much in sex as in other areas. One might claim that Pratan and Amir were able to use this aspect of my character against me. On the other hand, I feel comfortable saying that ultimately, I triumphed – though I doubt either of the men would complain about the outcome.

Rajasthani Moon by Lisabet Sarai

Neither kink nor curse can stop a woman with a mission.

Cecily Harrowsmith, secret agent extraordinaire, is a woman on a mission. When the remote Indian kingdom of Rajasthan refused to remit its taxes to the Empire, Her Majesty imposed an embargo. Deprived of the energy-rich mineral viridium, essential for modern technology and development, Rajasthan was expected to quickly give in and resume its  payments. Yet after three years, the rebellious principality still has not knuckled under. Cecily undertakes the difficult journey to the rugged, arid land of the Rajputs to determine just how it has managed to survive, and if possible to convince the country to return to the Empire's embrace. Instead, she's taken captive by a brigand who turns out to be the ruler's half-brother Pratan and delivered into the hands of the sexy but sadistic Rajah Amir, who expertly mingles torture and delight in his interrogation of the voluptuous interloper.

Cursed before birth by Amir's jealous mother, Pratan changes to a ravening wolf whenever the moon is full. Cecily uncovers the counter-spell that can reverse the effects of the former queen's hex and tries to trade that information for her freedom. Drawn to the fierce wolf-man and sympathising with his suffering, she volunteers to serve as the sacrifice required by the ritual – offering her body to the beast. In return, the Rajah reveals Rajasthan's amazing secret source of energy. In the face of almost impossible odds, Cecily has accomplished the task entrusted to her by the Empire. But can she really bear to leave the virile half-brothers and their colourful land behind and return to constraints of her life in England?

Reader Advisory: This book instantiates kidnap/captive fantasies. It includes robot bondage devices, animated nipple clamps, electric play, clockwork dildos, flogging, spanking, anal sex, double penetration in a dirigible, a small amount of F/F intimacy, scenes of MFM and sex with a werewolf in shifted form.

Excerpt (Rated PG)

Tossing the switch onto the mattress, he turned his back to her and strode over to the communications console. The apparatus glowed as he flipped it into active mode. Cecily wondered where he’d got the viridium to power the device. Unless of course the rebels had managed to smuggle the precious mineral into the country from elsewhere… But where? All the neighbouring kingdoms had been brought under Her Majesty’s sway.

“Amir—are you there?” Pratan lowered the volume of his voice as he spoke into the mouthpiece, and switched to Hindi, but Cecily had excellent hearing and a natural linguistic facility.

“Brother! How are you? I’d hoped to see you here at the palace tomorrow for the new moon festival.”

“I’ll be there. With a guest.”

“A guest. And who would that be?”

“I’m still trying to figure that out. It’s a woman—a damned seductive woman—whose carriage I ambushed this evening. She looks Indian—dark skin, black hair, plenty of flesh on her bones—but I think she’s English. She’s got these amazing blue eyes… Her given name is Cecily. That’s all I’ve managed to get out of her.”

“With your skills of persuasion? I’m most surprised, brother.” The Rajah’s amusement came through clearly. “And you’ve given up?”

“I figured I’d let you take a crack at her.”

Amir chuckled. “I could enjoy that, though Sarita might object.” There was a pause. Pratan scratched his head. Cecily found herself distracted by the way the muscles in his back shifted. “Bring her along then. Should I send the aerocopter to pick you up?”

Cecily shuddered. Faced with the threat of a trip by air, could she maintain her silence?

“No, no—I think I’ll commandeer her vehicle—quite a fine self-propelled amphibious coach, a good deal more sophisticated than any of ours. I imagine it should have more than enough fuel to make it to Jaipur, since I suspect that’s where our mystery woman was heading.”

“Sounds as though it will be an excellent addition to our fleet. I’ll alert the engineers. So I’ll expect you tomorrow, then. Travel safe, brother.”

“As long as I keep my—ah—guest securely bound, I doubt that I need to worry.”

Accha! I look forward to meeting her. Ram ram.”

Ram ram, Amir. Till tomorrow, then…”

“Wait a minute. ‘Cecily’, you said? Something’s tickling the back of my brain… Let me examine the Universal Electropaedia…” In the ensuing pause, Pratan glanced over his shoulder towards the bed. She assumed a demeanour of indifference. “Ah, yes…Dark complexion, you say, and blue eyes?”

“Correct.”

“Between twenty-five and thirty years of age? About eleven stone?”

“Ten stone four pounds!” Cecily interjected before she could help herself.

“Yes, and tall too, for a woman. And from the way she’s straining against the ropes, I’d say she understands every word we’re saying!”

Her spirits sank. Did the Electropaedia actually include an entry for her? Why hadn’t the Empire’s censors excised it? This unforgivable breach of security might well have sealed her fate, though she wasn’t about to give up yet.

“Brother, I believe that you’ve succeeded in capturing one of Queen Victoria’s most notorious agents—Miss Cecily Harrowsmith. According to reports, she is brave, brilliant, beautiful, and as dangerous as a king cobra.”

Pratan rubbed his bruised shin where she’d kicked him and grinned at her with genuine menace. “That sounds like her.”

Welcome Taige Crenshaw today and there is a giveaway as well

Top ten fictional boyfriends post or something on how they got inspired to write this one.

Dark Calling inspiration...

Dark Callings (Phoenix Intelligence Agency, Book #3) is about a man who thinks because of the being he is he does not dare hope for the woman who he wants. It’s about a woman who is determined enough to get beyond the defenses of a stubborn man.  Lennox S’chaech and Harmony Davis appeared in book 1 of the series but when they did I didn’t plan for them to have a story. They however had other plans. In rereading the first book the two characters filled my mind and let me know that they were to be together. I’ve learned never to try to tell determined characters ‘no’. It only leads to sleepless nights and their interjecting in other stories as you write. LOL.

Once I got that inkling that they were going to have their own story I let it sit since I knew they would not be the second story.  As I was writing the second in the series Lennox and Harmony’s connection became clearer. She had faith in him while he didn’t want to let her close. I loved the chemistry of the characters. By the time I was finished with the second book in series and ready to start there I was ready to hear what they had to say. Yet when I sat to write I had nothing. Yes nothing. I knew them so well already yet didn’t have any idea how to start their story. For days I tried to come up with at least a start for their story. I don’t plan out books but I at least need an idea how to start. I was just about to postpone writing their story when the idea came to me. It came in a dream. The dream was the opening for Dark Callings. When I woke I remembered it clearly. I was each character so I knew Lennox feelings as he sat thinking about what had happened to him then Harmony arriving. The feeling she made him experience that he could not afford to have.  I was walking in Harmony’s shoes as she teases Lennox and refused to believe anything negative about himself.  I was living each of their moments and I was in their minds.

The book Dark Callings  was inspired by the characters themselves. I’ve had a few books that I get inspired that way and love when it is. They are fun to write and explore what makes the characters that they are as they fall in love.

Here is the blurb for the book.

Welcome L.M. Brown today

A Break from the Norm

Hello everyone.  Thanks Dawn for having me blog here again today.

In any genre of fiction you can find common tropes which occur again and again in book after book.  Whether it is the hero always being handsome and dashing or the heroine fainting all over the place, there are certain plot points that constantly come round like the proverbial bad penny.  The male/male romance genre is no exception and has its own set of tropes that are used time and again.

Every now and then a blog post will be written about those common plot devices, more often than not in the form of complaining about them being overused to the point of being done to death.  Readers and reviewers plead with the writers, begging them to avoid various plots, whether it is werewolf shifters and their mating rituals, brooding vampires who have been waiting for eternity for The One, or the teenager kicked out of their home for being gay who resorts to selling himself on the streets, only to fall for one of his tricks.

The above examples are just a few of the many plots that are used again and again in this genre of fiction.  I am not saying that any of these plots shouldn’t be written.  As a reader I have read many of these stories and have enjoyed them very much.  I don’t for a single minute think these common tropes should be avoided completely.

But why do writers continually stick to the same plots?

Maybe it is because this is what is popular.  I can guarantee, without even looking to check, that if I went to the gay fiction bestseller list at Amazon or Are there would be a werewolf story in there somewhere.  Werewolves sell.  It is as simple as that.

The common themes that readers and reviewers complain are overused are more often than not the biggest sellers.

Now, I don’t write werewolves, at least not yet, and nor have I written any of those other examples at the present time.  Which is probably one of the reasons why most people stumbling across this blog post will be wondering who the heck I am.

My stories don’t stick to the norm, although I would have to admit there are a few of the other common tropes rearing their ugly heads sprinkled throughout my works.

Rather than the common matchmaking ghost, my ghost is one of the main characters.  Instead of having the dashing and handsome prince who is practically perfect and never puts a foot wrong, my prince is a bit of an idiot who, as one reviewer put it, isn’t the brightest candle in the chandelier.  And when one of my characters sells his body to survive, it isn’t the man he sells himself to who he falls for…

I like to twist things round and shake things up in my stories, just as the readers seem to want writers to do.

But if I ever want to make a career of writing I suspect that one day I will have to write what the readers really want, and resort to the common tropes they say they are tired of, but still read more of than the stories that try to break from the norm.

So, before I go, I would like to ask the readers not what themes you tired of seeing, but which you would like to see more of.  Share your thoughts and challenge us writers to step outside the box with the stories that you want to read.

TO SEE THE SKY by L.M. Brown

Can a lab rat whore find love with the servant of his master, or will their different backgrounds and prejudices keep them apart?

In the distant future, where the devastation caused by war has driven the human race below the surface of the Earth, society is split in half. The rich scientists live in towers where they can monitor the surface and determine when the poisonous gasses have cleared and the world is safe for humans once more. Meanwhile the majority of the human race lives in crowded labyrinthine caves, where life is harsh and short. Uneducated and with no real prospects for the future, a 'lab rat' is lucky to live to see thirty years of age. Employment options are minimal and few can escape the fate of choking to death on the dust of the caves.

When AJ, one of the poorest members of society, needs credits for medicine for his sister he is in a desperate situation. With no other options available he risks alienation from his family by selling himself to the highest bidder. Love is the last thing on his mind, but while Blake, his new owner, might not be Mr Right, Ryder, his servant, just might be. Unfortunately, their different backgrounds, prejudices, and AJ's brutal owner seem destined to keep them apart, but true love can be theirs for the taking, if they can only find a way.

Excerpt

“Who wants to start the bidding at five hundred credits?”

“Five hundred credits,” a bearded redhead called.

“Six hundred,” the Adonis countered.

AJ turned to him with surprise. “Why didn’t you just pay the five hundred instead of holding an auction?”

“Curiosity to see how much you’d get,” he replied easily. “And like you said, some of us have more credits than common sense.”

AJ wondered what it would be like to have so many credits that he would think nothing of casually throwing them away like these men were. Did they even realise there were people dying in the labyrinth, simply because they couldn’t afford to eat, to take care of themselves or move away from the choking dust?

“I want to see the goods,” another potential bidder shouted out, reminding AJ of the proceedings.

The blond turned to AJ, who didn’t wait to be asked to strip. He tugged off his clothes and at the suggestion of the current high bidder, climbed onto a nearby table and let the crowd ogle his naked body.

“He’s a bit scrawny.”

“But look at his gorgeous cock.”

“Yeah, but you aren’t bidding on him sticking it in you, are you?”

“Who cares? I’d pay a bit more to let him fuck me as well.”

“Seven hundred.”

“Eight hundred.”

“One thousand credits.”

AJ looked around as he tried to place the voice of the newest bidder. He could see Ryder standing near the door to the kitchen. The voice had come from his direction and for a moment AJ fancied that maybe the waiter had placed the bid. Of course the thought was a ridiculous one. What waiter would have a thousand credits to spend on a whim?

“One and a half thousand,” the Adonis replied with a grin and a wink at AJ.

“Two thousand.” The new bidder raised the stakes and only the blond man at AJ’s side appeared to be willing to go so high.

“Two and a half.”

“Three.”

“Three and a half.”

“Five thousand.”

AJ’s hands shook and he still couldn’t pick out who the second bidder was. He looked down at the blond man beside him and silently begged him to outbid the unknown stranger.

“Five and a half,” his Adonis said.

“Ten thousand credits for a week with the virgin,” the hidden bidder declared.

AJ closed his eyes and waited for the blond to raise the bid again. He had seen the credit band of the Adonis. He could afford to go higher, much higher. But he remained silent as the auctioneer called out.

“Any advance on ten thousand credits?”
