Book Review: There is a Door in this Darkness by Kristin Cashore

There is a Door in this Darkness by Kristin Cashore
Young Adult Contemporary Magic-Tinged Fiction
Publisher: Penguin Teen
Release Date: June 11th, 2024
Available at Amazon

My Rating for There is Door in this Darkness: 3 Stars

My Review:

There is a door in this darkness is an interesting story that while had interesting characters and premise, didn't capture my attention fully in spots. The story flow was jarring at times and I had a hard time getting back into the story when that happened. The characters were interesting yet felt one dimensional periodically. The book premise was interesting but the author, in my opinion, failed to deliver on it in a fully well rounded way that would capture my imagination and engage my mind entirely.

It was a dark story that felt depressing at times especially as the world we live in gets more chaotic as the days go on. With everything in the world being that chaotic, I felt this wasn't quite an uplifting story I wanted it to be. For a reader like me, dark and at times depressing books, don't resonate with me as well as lighter fare does. There is a Door in this Darkness was one that felt at times jarring and depressing. It could be the mood I was in while trying to read this one or just what I was experiencing in my day to day life that kept me from fully immersing myself in this book.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at The Color of a Silver Lining. Read an excerpt from the book.
Chapter 10
It had been two full days, and the reporters were still outside my house.
Louise and I took cover indoors. I’d planned to keep her home from school anyway for a full week after the accident, and I’d asked for sick days at the hospital. Thankfully we had a private fully-fenced backyard with tall trees, so we were able to go outside with Leo and get some fresh air in a safe place with no cameras pointed at us.
One good thing came from our self-imposed lockdown: We had plenty of time to get creative with crayons. Over the course of two days, Louise drew dozens of pictures of her visit to heaven, and I tacked each one to the wall outside her bedroom.
To a stranger, they might have looked like any other drawings by a five-year old because they were images of colorful rainbows and yellow suns, trees and tall buildings—just like what she’d described to me in the park. But to me, I saw something more.
Each time she finished a new picture, she handed the page to me and said, “This isn’t as good as the real thing. I don’t think I can draw it.”
“Would it help if you had something better than crayons?” I asked, encouraging her to continue. “What about paint?”
“That would be good.”
“Let’s go to the art store tomorrow,” I suggested.
In the meantime, she drew hearts everywhere to surround herself and her grandfather, who held her hand wherever they were—in the sky above the clouds or in an orchard with sunlight filtering through pink apple blossoms or rabbits in the tall grass. I could almost hear the sound of insects buzzing, grass swishing against my legs…
And she always drew a mustache on her grandfather.
By the end of the second day, the entire hallway was papered with Louise’s colorful crayon illustrations, but now she was painting with oils on canvas—using an easel I’d purchased at the art store.
I spent a lot of time in the hallway, studying her creations, which she produced at an alarming rate. She drew birds and trees and meadows with colorful wildflowers and sparkling drops of dew. Oceans with turquoise water, dolphins and seagulls. Mountains with white, snow-capped peaks. Sunsets with spectacular clouds and silver linings.
On the third day, when I woke at six am to the sound of rain pelting against my window, I donned my bathrobe, went to the living room and peered through the slats in the blinds. To my relief, the street in front of my house was deserted. The reporters and news vans had departed.
Knowing my sister was an early riser on school days, I called her. She told me to turn on the television because it appeared we were no longer the top news story on every station. We’d been bumped aside by an earthquake in California the night before. I wasn’t happy about the devastation, of course, but I was thankful to have our privacy back.

Excerpt

Across the street the man with the silver-framed glasses stood back in the shadows and stared at the front window of the garden apartment. He could see the back of his quarry’s head as he watched a small flat-screen TV. Time passed. Eventually the head nodded forward and then jerked up. When it happened a second time, the creature turned off the TV and then the lamp and headed to bed. The man waited for another half hour with his back pressed against an alcove formed where two brownstones met. The street was quiet. Almost no one walked by, and the lone person who came down the street failed to notice him in the shadows. The man felt his breath grow hoarse, and blood rushed in his ears as his heart began to pound. He cultivated that sensation as he reached into his coat pocket for the screwdriver that rested there and made himself imagine the creature’s hands touching the Beloved’s face. Stroking his body. He curled his fingers around the screwdriver and then clenched and unclenched rhythmically. Its thick handle felt rough against his palm because of the grooves and sharp edges he had chiseled into it. He had ideas for other implements that would serve his purpose, but for now, this would do just fine. This would make his point. His throat was dry, and his eyes burned from focusing on the darkened window, but he felt invincible. The tension in his body climbed exquisitely, and when he could take no more, he slipped across the street and stepped down to the locked gate. It opened easily with his small set of picks. The gate made no noise when the creature went through it earlier, so he was confident and quick and didn’t bother to lock it behind him. Child’s play, he thought as he worked the lock on the apartment door. The tumblers clicked into place. He stored his lockpicks, slipped inside the darkened apartment, and then closed the door behind him as silently as he could. Streetlight came through the slatted blinds the boy had failed to close completely. He waited quietly until he heard a faint snore from the back and then removed his glasses and tucked them in an inside pocket of his jacket. The scarf his quarry had been wearing caught his eye, and the man bared his teeth as he lifted it off the coat tree and tugged it tightly between his hands. It was well made. It would hold. He smiled. He slid through the gloom toward the room where the creature lay sleeping. He was hard, and the blood in his erection pulsed in time to the pounding of his heart. That boy had dared to touch his Beloved. He had probably even been fucked by him. But that wasn’t enough—oh no. He came back for more. It had taken the man so long to find his Beloved and interpret his subtle clues. He finally understood what was required of him. The undeserving gnat must be chastised, and he would be the Beloved’s angel of retribution. He was conscious of the weight of the screwdriver in his pocket, the scratch of the wool scarf in his hands, and the power in his arms. He reached for the boy on the bed.

Excerpt:

“Let’s step into the hallway,” Sean suggested, placing his arm around the shoulder of the officer, guiding him out of the room.
Darby slammed her head against the pillow and again hot tears welled in her eyes. Grabbing the call button, she pressed it over and over until a petite and clearly irritated nurse entered the room. In the split second the curtain was drawn back, Darby saw Sean and the sergeant sharing a handshake.
“Yes?” the nurse asked as she gave cursory glances to the machines tethering Darby to the bed.
“I need a phone.”
“We don’t allow telephones in the rooms. Is there someone I can call for you?”
“Yes. I need the police.”
The nurse blinked, then peered back over her shoulder as she pushed apart the curtain. “Officer?”
“Not him,” Darby cried. Too late.
Sean and the officer returned. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the sergeant was totally charmed by Sean. The sergeant took up a position at the end of her bed next to the nurse while Sean moved to the head and draped his arm around her shoulders. “I was just explaining your condition to the policeman.” His fingers dug into the flesh at her shoulder.
Ciminelli smiled understandingly. “I’ve got three kids myself. My wife went a little hormonal with each one. She had all sorts of weird thoughts and cravings. Got so I was afraid to walk in the door after my shift. Never knew what was going to set her off.”
“Darby’s normally very rational,” Sean said, brushing a kiss to her temple. “Don’t you have something to say to the officer, sweetheart?”
Darby pressed her lips tight.
Sean squeezed her shoulder harder. “Darby, the officer checked. He spoke directly with Roxanne.”
“Roxanne would lie for you,” she whispered under her breath.
Sean sighed heavily. “Sweetheart, I thought you might still be…confused, so I made sure the officer called the airline to verify that I was on the flight. The hotel verified that I checked in and even told the officer what I ordered from room service and when it was delivered. The investor I was meeting as well as the restaurant staff verified that I attended the meeting. So, don’t you think it’s time for you to apologize to the officer for making extra work for him?”
Darby had no idea how he had managed it, but he had. Now she looked like the crazy one. And worse yet, she was at Sean’s mercy, which was a terrifying thought. What would happen once they were alone? She shivered just thinking about the potential punishment for calling him a murderer in public. She had that trapped animal feeling again and she couldn’t stop crying. No one believed her but she didn’t know how he’d pulled it off; she just knew he had. Just as she knew the officer wasn’t going to believe a word she said. Darby felt defeated. She gave up. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t give it a thought, Mrs. Grisom. I know it was just the grief and the hormones talking. I gave your husband everything you’ll need to make the, um, final arrangements for your parents.”
“Thank you.”
The nurse followed Ciminelli out of the room. Darby braced herself, fully expecting to suffer the wrath of Sean. Instead, he was just looking at her as he arranged the hair framing her face.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I always liked your parents,” he whispered against her ear.
“Ummmm.”
Then calmly and quietly he added, “If you hadn’t called them, I never would have been forced to kill them.”

Excerpt:

“Have you ever met a man named Lucien at the Pana Sea?”
Max’s gaze cut back to hers, and he raised an eyebrow. “Lucien Christophe?”
“Maybe. Frenchman, blond hair, late thirties or early forties?”
“Yeah, that’s him.”
“What do you know about him?”
Max shrugged. “Nothing, really. He’s in pharmaceuticals. When I was on the board of Carressa Industries, we sold him a small company that manufactured lab equipment. Now I see him sometimes at charity fund-raisers. Why do you ask?”
“I think he might be involved in a woman’s disappearance.”
His brow furrowed. “Who?”
“Her name is Margaret, but she goes by Celine at the Pana Sea. She works as an escort. She’s going to die soon, if she’s not dead already.”
Max sat up in his chair, a deep frown etched on his face. “You saw it in a vision?”
Val nodded.
“And you think you can stop it?”
“I’m going to try. I have to try.”
His face darkened.
“Lucien’s part of a club called the Blue Serpent. Have you heard of them?”
“Yes.” He started tapping his toe, his outer cool continuing to disintegrate.
“Are you a member?”
“No. I’ve only heard other people talking about it. Sounds more like a cult than a club.”
“Can you get me access?”
Max scoffed. “That’s why you asked me to come here? You want me to join a cult for you?”
“Only rich people can get in. You’re my only rich…friend.”
He glared at her. They would never be just friends. Either they’d be lovers or nothing at all.
“I’m not joining a cult,” he said.
“Then introduce me to someone who’s already in it.”
“No,” he snapped. “I’m not setting you up on a blind date with a cult member, either. I don’t want any part of this.” He stood to leave.
“Max, please.” She grabbed his arm before he could walk away. A pulse like static electricity shot through her at the feel of his flesh. He glanced at her hand, then at her, and for half a second Val saw her Max looking into her eyes, the one that set her insides on fire, that wanted her as much as she wanted him. Just as quickly he disappeared, replaced by the new Max. After she’d caught her breath, Val said, “Margaret will die if we don’t do something.”
“That’s great you’re willing to bend over backwards to change the future for someone you don’t even know. Congratulations on finding something important enough in your life to fight for. Good luck with that.”
He didn’t jerk his arm out of her hand, but he walked away with such purpose that he left her arm dangling in the air, grasping at his receding back, blurry through her tears.

Book Spotlight~ Light Up the Dark

Light Up The Dark - Suki Fleet

Buy Links: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Cover Design: Natasha Snow

Blurb

For two years Nicky has wandered the dark empty corridors of the overgrown Thorn Hall, unseen and untouched, feeling like a ghost. His only company, the cold man who promised to keep him safe from harm, Lance.

But when Lance dies, Nicky’s assurance of safety disintegrates and his world suddenly becomes a lot more real and a lot more dangerous. Scared to leave the house, Nicky longs for daylight. He employs a gardener to clear the over-grown bushes and vines that have nearly swallowed Thorn Hall whole.

The last thing Nicky expects a little light to do is show him something to fight for.

Eighteen months in a young offenders’ institute has taught Cai two things: he occupies the playful puppy end of the How Dangerous Are You? spectrum, and he has an unfortunate knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Desperate for a job, he takes the first offer he gets. Even though Thorn Hall creeps the hell out of him and he barely knows one end of a pair of garden shears from the other.

Things start to fall apart when Cai is drawn into Nicky’s strange world of sticky notes and secrets. Cai finds he is now a target, blamed for a crime he didn’t commit. Desperate not to go back to prison, he digs deep and risks all the good things in life to help Nicky run.

But now Nicky has someone he wants to protect, he knows he can’t run any more.

Excerpt

Cai asked, “Want me to take you home?”

Nicky nodded.

The drive back was barely traumatic at all.

Cai pulled up in front of the house. The quiet when he turned the engine off was profound. Nicky wasn’t sure what broken impulse made him disturb it. “I didn’t know that was going to happened.”

“I kind of gathered that.” Cai turned in his seat but Nicky made no move to look at him. “I….” Cai took a deep breath. “You look like you need a hug but I also kind of want to keep all my limbs and, you know, most of my teeth. I’m not a big fan of pain of any sort, just so you know.”

Staring at his hands, Nicky snorted back a laugh, then scowled, annoyed that the sound had burst out of him before he could stop it.

Cai sat watching him, not moving.

“Stop staring at me, and get it over with, then,” Nicky huffed.

Even though he was expecting it, he still nearly leapt out of his skin when Cai’s big palm circled his shoulder.

Cai stopped. “You sure about—”

“Yes,” he hissed. “I’m just… sensitive to stuff sometimes.” That was an understatement. Closing his eyes, he held himself still and didn’t breathe as Cai’s arms came around him in the gentlest hug he’d ever experienced. He would not lean into it, nope, no chance. But he wanted to. He badly, badly wanted to.

After less than ten seconds, Cai began to move away. Nicky didn’t want that either. Gripping the front of Cai’s T-shirt, Nicky pulled him back. And Cai let himself be pulled.

Up close, Cai smelled of the inside of his van, of rain water, sex and sweat. He smelled ridiculously safe. Steady and strong, his heart thumped against Nicky’s shoulder as their bodies pressed awkwardly around the gearstick.

“One minute,” Nicky whispered, his grip tightening on the material in his fist.

“One minute,” Cai agreed.

They remained locked together until Nicky’s hand began to ache, and even Cai’s warmth couldn’t keep him from shivering in the chilly night air.

“Your van is draughty as hell,” Nicky murmured, holding his mouth open against the soft material of Cai’s top, even though it was in desperate need of a wash.

“It’s falling apart,” Cai agreed. “But it was cheap, and it runs on fresh air.” He shifted back a little and the scruff on his chin rubbed across Nicky’s ear. “I’m sorry things happened the way they did earlier. We should have probably just… done this.”

This would never have happened, though. The only reason it was happening now was because…. Nicky shook his head. He had no idea why they were doing what they were doing. “It’s been two years since anyone’s… touched me.” The words just came out. He wished he could swallow them back down. Saying them aloud made him feel empty and alone. He’d never been the most tactile person but, fuck, he never imagined how much he’d miss being held.

Cai, of course, got the wrong end of the stick. “Two years without any… sex?”

“Is that all you think about?”

Cai tried to smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “No, not at all. The entire time I was in the YOI, holding someone like this would have been enough. I missed sex, obviously, but I missed cuddling more. Weird, eh?”

Nicky blinked at him, trying to figure him out. “So how long since you’ve fucked around with someone?”

“Before today? More than eighteen months.” Now Cai was smiling. It made Nicky feel weird. Good weird. Really good weird. “No wonder we went too far if we were both kinda gagging for it.”

Gagging for it? Nicky rolled his eyes. Then he turned his head and met Cai’s gaze close up. “Was it too far?”

Looking shocked, but amused, Cai pulled away entirely. Nicky missed his warmth. Wanted to drag him back. “You confuse the hell out of me, you know.”

“Thought you’d have figured out by now that I’m kind of messed up.”

Dropping his head back down and sending a warm rush of breath tingling down Nicky’s spine, Cai murmured, “Thought you’d have figured out by now that I don’t care what you think you are. I like you too much.”

A soft knock on the passenger window made them both jump.

Adrenaline surged through Nicky’s veins and instinctively he ducked and dragged Cai down with him into the foot well. Slinging his arm over Cai’s head, he readied himself to shield them from a blow that didn’t come.

“It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s Loz.” Cai pushed himself upright.

Heart still racing, Nicky loosened his grip on Cai’s T-shirt and turned.

Face pressed up against the window, Loz looked between them and grinned like a satisfied fox. Oh, perfect. Just perfect.

Book Review: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet
Fantasy Romance

August 2nd, 2016

A fabulous debut from a new to me author that will enthrall you to the very end!

My Rating for A Promise of Fire: A Recommended Read and 5 Stars

Catalia ‘Cat’ Fisa is in hiding from her homicidal mother and a prophecy that scares her to the bones. Hiding within a carnival as a soothsayer, she never anticipates being found out by a hunky if at times hard headed warlord named Griffin, who is determined to use Cat’s power as a kingmaker in his newly conquered kingdom. But Cat is not all that she seems and as she fights her destiny and Griffin, she finds that his fairness, loyalty and smoldering advances turn her inside out and are hard to resist. But can she trust Griffin to keep her safe when she knows just what her mother is capable of and that she is destined for something more than the happiness she longs for in Griffin’s arms?

OH.MY.GOD. Debut author Amanda Bouchet delivers a pulse pounding ride from start to finish with her new book, A PROMISE OF FIRE, and delivers a story that is full of magic, gods and simmering passion that will steal your heart even as you flip the pages to see what happens next. The story is amazing and I just could not put this one down. After all the press about his one, I just had to try it out and I am so glad I did.

Ms. Bouchet delivers complex characters that are life-like, complex and have vulnerabilities that slowly show themselves to the reader within the pages of this first book in the Kingmaker Chronicles. I absolutely adore Cat. She is tough yet vulnerable, mysterious and full of hidden depths that tease the reader to set out to find out about them. Her scenes with Griffin are pure heat, so much so I swore the book was going to go up in flames with all those sparks flying around. Her interactions with some of the royal family was amusing and was a perfect foil to the darkness that followed Cat and the destiny she didn’t want to have. The author does an amazing job in capturing the characters so perfectly amid the pages of the book. Cat was feisty, charming and so much fun, Griffin was ambitious yet tender with Cat, strong and fearless but gets him around his family and he turns to mush. The secondary characters were just as entertaining and enjoyable. I loved them all.

A PROMISE OF FIRE is the first book in this brand new series and one I was enthralled with until the very end. After the climatic ending which left some major questions about who Cat really is and the destiny she still hasn’t told Griffin about left me wanting more. I was thrilled to see book two, A Breath of Fire, coming out in a few days after I finished t his one. I am eager to see where the author leads Cat, Griffin and the team next. If you enjoy a highly entertaining fantasy series then I highly recommend A PROMISE OF FIRE and settle in for some hours of reading pleasure.

Synopsis

Outed and dumped on national television by his rising star boyfriend, Joey Nichols must face the bigotry of the locals in his small Southern town alone. His dreams of a happy ever after lie crushed at his feet. Novelist Troy Steele has an axe to grind against Hollywood heartbreaker types. Transforming Joey into a gorgeous, unobtainable hunk would be payback worthy of Troy’s poison pen. It's a brilliant way to get back at Joey’s image-obsessed ex-boyfriend and the movie producer who’s mutilating Troy’s novels. What begins as simple revenge may tangle them together in something far more complicated. Living well may be the best revenge, but Troy and Joey could rewrite that to loving well.

Excerpt

The Nichols’ dining room table could easily seat six people if it weren’t covered with business records, homework, and car parts. Instead of clearing it off, the family assembled in the living room, parents on the couch, Joey and his sisters on the floor. Overloaded plates balanced on each lap. “Hush, it’s starting,” Joey’s mom warned, mostly to thirteen-year-old Stacey. “Oops! Gotta go!” Stacey disconnected her call and dropped her phone onto the floor. Joey and Jackie were quiet already, Joey afraid he’d miss something important if he so much as blinked. Ten years separated him and his twin from Stacey. Mom often joked that it had taken her that long to forget the horrors of giving birth enough to try again. Dad blamed his cousin’s homebrew. “Good evening, I’m Evelyn Hugh. Welcome to Hollywood Seen. Tonight’s hottie, err, I mean, hot story”—the show’s hostess began, grin unapologetic—“is a young man who’s got all of Hollywood talking. Riker Sanderson has what it takes to survive in this town: looks, talent, and a legion of screaming fans.” On cue, the camera focused on the audience, where the legion, mostly young and female, chanted, “Riker! Riker!” “Sorry to disappoint you girls. Rumor has it that Mr. Sanderson is taken.” Evelyn pouted for the camera. “Or is he? Joining me tonight is none other than Riker Sanderson, star of the action thriller, Something to Die For.” Taken? Joey swallowed hard. Surely she couldn’t mean... The camera zoomed out, showing the beautiful man who’d stolen his heart and who’d shared his apartment up until a few months ago. Riker, more muscled thanks to a heavy training routine for the movie, sported gold highlights in his now much shorter hair. He looked downright sinful in tight-fitting T-shirt and jeans. Joey idly toyed with the silver band on his middle finger, a nervous habit, before noticing its mate missing from Riker’s hand. Maybe he’d taken it off for the movie. It didn’t mean anything. No, nothing at all. All worries disappeared when Riker slowly raised a simmering gaze to the camera. Something clenched deep in Joey’s insides. Those dark eyes hypnotized him, even if they were on a TV screen and not actually in the room. Bedroom eyes intense enough to cause instant paralysis. How many times had Joey lost himself in them, lying in a sweaty, satisfied tangle with Riker? “Thank you for joining us,” the bleached-blonde hostess gushed, a woman Big Joe said gave him gout. “Why does she do that to her hair?” Mom asked. “She’s ruined it.” She added the tried and true statement guaranteed to grant forgiveness for any unkindness spoken by a Southerner: “Bless her heart.” With her whiney voice and constant fawning, Evelyn Hugh reminded Joey of one of the teenaged fans. “I can call you Riker, can’t I?” “Sure, if I can call you Evelyn.” Her ordinary name sounded exotic when spoken in Riker’s deep tones. That was his gift. He could make anyone feel like the most important person on the planet just by talking to them. Joey had warmed himself by Riker’s fire on many a cold winter’s night. “I loved you in the romantic comedy, Trying the Knot, filmed in your home state of Georgia. Although only a minor supporting role, your portrayal of the obnoxious cousin at the wedding turned out to be a real scene-stealer and resulted in your big break, didn’t it?” Riker hadn’t really wanted the cousin role that required him to wear a fat suit and play a backwoods redneck, even if he’d had to beat out a lot of other hopefuls for the part. “Well, Evelyn,”—Riker turned puppy dog eyes on the hostess—“I’d originally auditioned for the role of Chuck.” “The pain-in-the-ass playboy who seduced several bridesmaids? Oh, you’re too sweet to play such a cad.” “You’re too kind.” A better-known actor had won the honors of playing asshole Chuck. Riker had stormed around the apartment for days. Riker smiled like he’d hit the jackpot by missing the role. “Actually, I found the cousin part more intriguing. I mean, it stretched my acting skills to play someone so unlike myself.” “Oh, please, I’m trying to eat here,” Jackie spat. Joey flashed her a quick evil eye and went back to watching TV. What a tantrum Riker had thrown about “playing a hick nobody.” In the end he took the money, and assurances from his agent of appearing with a few big stars being a good career move and a way to get noticed. But he’d done the part enough justice to bring Hollywood knocking. “What an amazing experience,” the man of Joey’s dreams replied, though that’s not what he’d called it to friends. “It really helped me grow as an actor.” He’d privately referred to the part as beneath someone of his talent and his own personal hell. “What’s it like working with powerhouse actress Clair Clancy?” Joey lost the battle to keep a straight face. He’d gotten more earfuls about “Clair, the air-headed bitch.” She’d only spoken to Riker twice during filming when their roles overlapped. Onscreen, Riker described her as, “An amazing actress. A true professional.” He waved at the camera. “Congrats on the birth of your little girl, Clair. You’ll be an amazing mother.” This from the man who’d wanted to pass a law making it illegal for the woman to breed. Wow, what a good actor. For a moment even Joey believed him. “In a real-life Cinderella story, a relatively unknown actor is chosen for the lead role of Mitchell Keller in the biggest film of the year. How’s that working out for you?” Evelyn leaned her head on Riker’s shoulder, eyeing him through batting lashes. How dare she? She needed to back off. A punch to the shoulder brought Joey back to reality, breathing hard and fingernails digging into the palms of his clenched fists. “She does that with everybody,” Jackie murmured. “What’s your problem, anyway?” Joey took a deep breath and let it out slowly, a flush creeping up his cheeks. After what could have been two years, or more probably, two seconds, Riker answered, “It’s really amazing.” “Doesn’t he know any adjectives besides amazing?” Stacey cut in. “I mean, really! He’s an actor, he’s supposed to be good with words.” Oops, the last holdout in the family swayed to the “We don’t like Riker” side. Joey ignored her. He’d show them. Soon he’d be living the good life, basking in the California sun. He and Riker had even talked about getting married. “...and my producer, Ian Hagan, is amazing,” Riker was saying. Stacey made an “I told you so” face. Their mother swatted her arm, nipping in the bud whatever sarcastic remark she’d been about to sling. Riker plowed on. “He took a huge chance in hiring an unknown for such a major role, and I’m grateful he believes in me. I’ve done everything I can to make sure he doesn’t regret taking a risk. We’ve wrapped up the final scenes. Now it’s in post-production, where they’ll add the Hollywood magic.” What? Riker said a few hours ago that they were still shooting. Well, maybe they had to reshoot some parts. “Oh, that’s fabulous.” Evelyn’s fake smile lost its battle to look sincere. Joey knew how she felt. The standing local rule: Never mention acting around Riker unless you had a least an hour and didn’t mind listening. Folks in town phrased their words very carefully. “Now, Riker, I know you’ve heard the rumors and seen the pictures posted on the Internet of yourself with someone who is apparently very close to you.” Joey’s heart pounded and his ears rang. Rumors? Pictures? He peeped over at Jackie, who sat up straighter and put her plate down on the floor. The smile fled Riker’s face, and he wore the same pleading expression he’d used to get out of cooking. “Yes, I have. For the record, I’d like to state that my personal life isn’t anyone else’s business.” Oh, shit! What had they found out? “Breathe, Joey,” Jackie urged. No matter how he tried, Joey couldn’t, because Evelyn dropped a bomb. “Are you gay?” Oh, my God! They’d been careful since Riker signed the movie deal. How had anyone suspected? Sure, in a few months maybe, when they were ready. Not now! Jackie stiffened and Joey held his breath. “Yes, Evelyn, I am.” Riker sighed, his anguished eyes filling with tears. Joey had never seen anyone who could cry on demand quite so convincingly, not even Stacey. “I’m not ashamed of being a gay American, and I don’t see how my orientation has any bearing on my acting ability.” “I knew it!” Stacey shrieked. Jackie shushed her. Joey ignored her again. Evelyn scented blood and went for the throat—her trademark. “The man shown with you in the pictures, is he your boyfriend?” Man in the pictures? Boyfriend? Surely it couldn’t be... Who the hell were they talking about? If it wouldn’t have given too much away, Joey would have made a mad dash to his parent’s aging computer to find out. Evelyn Hugh moved much too slowly. Stomach too queasy to eat, Joey plopped his uneaten meal down on the coffee table. Riker sat quietly gazing into the camera and Joey almost heard the wheels turning under that mop of highlighted hair. Finally, his lover became his ex-lover with the casually spoken, “I guess you could say we were in a relationship at the time. Nothing serious. We’ve decided to cool things down while I focus on my career.” What!? Nothing really serious?! Joey gaped at the screen, a flash fire creeping up his cheeks all the way to his ears. Did Riker mean him? A boulder formed in his throat. They’d talked about forever. He gasped for breath, unable to turn away from the train wreck of his life unfolding on national television. “Yes, it’s true.” Riker used the same sorrowful tone the hick cousin had during a big scene in Trying the Knot. “I mean, he’s back home, I’m here. It wouldn’t work out.” Jackie might have snapped, “Oh, cry me a river!” Joey was too caught up in his own personal drama to know for sure. He knows I’m watching! He knows I’m seeing this! Why is he coming out now? Why couldn’t he tell the nosy woman it’s none of her damned business? Riker focused directly on the camera, as if seeking Joey out. “Yeah, we kind of grew out of each other. It’s time to move on.” “I certainly appreciate your candor, and I’m sure there’s plenty of people around town willing to keep you company.” Evelyn sat up, patting at her hair. “We all look forward to your upcoming movie. It’s sure to be a blockbuster. Thank you for joining us.” Joey dared not dart out of the room like he wanted to and give too much away. At the moment the family only knew that he’d had a gay roommate. Should he act surprised? The camera left Riker and zoomed in on the hostess. Joey saw her through a glaze of tears and fears. “Remember that you heard it first on Hollywood Seen.” Her goofy grin dimmed a few watts. “Now, here’s another Hollywood Seen exclusive, the photographs that started it all. Last month they began circling the Internet. Until tonight, spokesmen for Mr. Sanderson firmly denied their authenticity. A pity, really. They made such a handsome couple, don’t you agree?” Joey’s reality crumbled, replaced by a nightmare. The TV screen filled completely with an image of Riker and himself dancing at the club in Atlanta, Riker’s leg wedged between Joey’s, Joey’s mouth locked to his lover’s neck and his crotch pressed against Riker’s denim-covered thigh. Oh dear God! He looked like a humping vampire! The image lasted forever. Enough already, take it down! He’d been stripped naked. Laid bare, all his deepest, darkest secrets exposed. Calm down, no one can tell it’s you. Maybe they’ll think it’s someone out in Hollywood. That hope dashed to pieces with another picture, probably taken shortly after the first. In it, Joey and Riker both faced the camera. The hostess delivered the killing blow. “Our sources tell us that the man in the picture with Riker Sanderson is Joseph Nichols, Jr., with whom Riker lived in Georgia before moving to California.” Joey fumbled his cell phone out of his pocket and barely managed to hit the right number. Instead of one of the ever-changing heavy-metal ringtones Riker used, a recorded message stated flatly, “The number you have dialed has been disconnected...”
