Blurb

A man with nothing finds everything.

Abandoned at birth, WWI veteran Hal Stanton faces bleak employment prospects in post-war London. Desperation spurs him to reinvent himself to hook a wealthy wife, one he will be devoted to even if he feels no real passion. But when he meets his fiance’s cousin, Julian Needham, it’s all he can do to keep his heart in check and his eye on the prize.

From the moment he’s introduced to the charming stranger Margaret plans to marry, Julian suspects the man’s motives yet fights a relentless attraction. He’s determined to reveal Hal as a fraud but must handle the matter delicately to protect his sweet cousin’s feelings. A weekend at the family estate should allow time and opportunity for him to expose Halstead Wiley.

Even as the men match wits in a battle of attempted unmasking, powerful sexual attraction threatens to overcome them both and win the day. Can a true love connection possibly grow between these adversaries without destroying lives and loved ones?

Excerpt

Drawing up in front of the Needham house on the curved driveway, Hal felt as if he ought to be arriving in a carriage and four rather than Margaret’s Daimler motorcar. The sprawling limestone house was a convoluted collection of roof peaks, turrets, and wings added on over the years. It looked like a castle, proclaiming nobility dwelt within and an outsider like him would never belong.

Hal didn’t resent the upper class their wealth, power, and prestige. He merely wanted to become one of them. Was that so awful? A friend had once come to Hal’s flat begging a sanctuary to spend a night or two. The stay had turned into something more like two months. But Hal certainly understood that desire to lay down the burden of constant struggle to survive and find a quiet, comfortable resting spot.

Margaret would be his safe place, and he would be hers, making certain she never wanted for companionship. In return, he’d have a nice house, good food, and a fine wardrobe. He would guard her fortune as if it were his own, spending wisely and increasing it shrewdly. He wouldn’t be a burden but a life companion in an easygoing, if chaste, arrangement.

He got out of the passenger side of the car, and Margaret came around to join him. “What do you think? The house may appear grand, but don’t let the battlements fool you. Inside, it’s quite shabby. Despite a respectable family name, my aunt and uncle aren’t wealthy by any means.”

Hal tucked her hand through the loop of his arm. “I’m not nervous. I’m quite ready to meet them and explain why I’ve fallen in love with their one-of-a-kind niece. This must have been a wonderful place to grow up with all those nooks and crannies to explore.”

“It truly was. Mother and I could have afforded to stay in our own home after Father died. But I’m so glad we came to live with Aunt Agnes and Uncle Harold; otherwise, I never would’ve had brothers like Julian and James.” She frowned. “After nearly two years, I still have trouble thinking of James in the past tense.”

Hal recalled James had survived France but died in the influenza epidemic almost immediately upon his return home. He put an arm around Margaret and hugged her. “You must miss him terribly.”

“His passing has been difficult for me but nearly killed my aunt and uncle. They’re still mourning. And Julian…” She shook her head.

“Misses his brother and perhaps blames himself for being alive,” Hal guessed. “I understand that feeling, having lost many comrades at the front.”

Margaret stopped at the doorstep and turned to him, eyes shining. “You survived because God had more for you to do in this life. He brought you to me, for which I am ever grateful.”

Hal hated himself just a little more at her declaration. When he’d begun this plan, he’d imagined landing a wealthy older widow who knew the score and didn’t mind so long as she had a handsome young husband to show off to her friends like a trophy. But then he’d met Margaret. He’d been so taken with her blend of sweetness and assertiveness that it had seemed possible to make a sham marriage work. Now he was stuck with the plan he’d devised.

The door opened before they knocked. A stooped older man with a paunch swelling his waistcoat greeted them. “Welcome home, Miss Margaret.”

“Hello, Grover. You’re looking very dapper today. I’m so glad to be back. I’ve missed home these past months. May I present my fiancé, Mr. Halstead Wiley.”

The butler bowed. “Good day, sir. Welcome to Barton Park.”

Hal almost returned the bow, then recalled his proper standing and nodded politely instead. “I’m happy to be here.”

Grover escorted them to the drawing room, where Mr. and Mrs. Needham and Julian were already gathered. Hal assessed the room before following Margaret inside. Pale blue walls and rug offered a sense of tranquility and the room was not overly cluttered. The dark, heavy pieces of furniture from an older century didn’t fit the pale color palette that suggested a more chic, modern décor.

Margaret’s aunt and uncle rose to greet him. The outdated style of Mrs. Needham’s gown didn’t detract from her aura of grace and refinement as she offered her hand. “Mr. Wiley, we’re pleased you could come. Darling Margaret is the daughter we never had, and we were eager to meet the man she’s chosen.”

“Quite so,” Mr. Needham said.

Hal wasn’t certain if he was meant to shake Mrs. Needham’s hand or kiss it. The customs of the gentry weren’t familiar to him. He gave a polite press before letting go, then turned to offer a hearty shake to Mr. Needham. “The pleasure is mine. Your niece is a prize.”

“Yes, she is.” Mr. Needham gave Hal an assessing look with gray eyes very much like his son’s.

Hal scanned the rest of the room to find Julian standing near the window. Sunlight burnished his brown hair with golden highlights. His well-cut profile with its straight nose and strong jawline was haloed in light. When he turned his stern gaze toward Hal, a little hum of anticipation awoke within him.

Hal squelched this reaction to a man he considered an adversary. Needham had invited him here to poke holes in his story, so he must be on guard every moment not to give himself away. If this wedding were to be called off, he’d be jobless and desperate again. One would expect work to be plentiful in the aftermath of the Great War with so few veterans returning, but the economy was in shambles. Odd jobs were all Hal had been able to find, spurring him to his mad scheme to land a wealthy woman.

He offered a bright smile. “Good to see you again, Mr. Needham.”

As much as it wasn’t, it actually was. Needham intrigued Hal, not only his physical demeanor but his affectionate manner with Margaret and his magnetic presence. Had they met under other circumstances, he and Julian might have been friends—or probably something more than friends, for Hal guessed “confirmed bachelor” Julian shared his attraction to men.

Hal dragged his thoughts away from the sorts of activities they might have gotten up to in another time and place, as he sat beside his betrothed on a sofa. “You have a lovely home,” he complimented his hosts. “Its history must be fascinating.”

“Thank you,” Mrs. Needham said. “Barton Park was built in 1640 and belonged to several families before the Needhams took possession.”

Her husband added dryly, “You may learn the entire history on every second Wednesday of the month, when the house is open. I daresay the tour guide is more educated on both the history and the architecture than we are.”

“Tours?” Julian abandoned his spot by the window to stride across the room with long-legged grace. “When did this begin?”

“Surely I mentioned this in one of my letters. A company that arranges tours approached us this past summer,” Mrs. Needham explained. “At first, your father refused to speak with their representative, but when we learned other owners of other estates were allowing tours, we decided to give it a go. It’s a respectable way to share one’s heritage and is little trouble at all. Thus far, the tourists, both domestic and foreign, have been orderly and respectful.”

“Not at all annoying having strangers troop through one’s home,” Mr. Needham continued in his sub-Saharan tone. “And you’d know about this if you paid the least attention to what your mother writes, or if you came for a visit every so often.”

Julian stood before his parents, scowling. “You did not mention this in any of your letters. I’d no idea you’d reached such a…” He glanced at Hal and seemed to reconsider airing his family’s financial business. “That you were considering such a thing.”

“It has become quite common these days for historical houses to be on display,” Mrs. Needham pointed out. “As you’ve said, times are changing.”

“More’s the pity,” the elder Needham growled.

Hal sat very still, wishing he were someplace else and not witnessing this family argument. He’d had no idea the Needhams were in such difficult straits until today. Apparently, their children hadn’t either. Surely Margaret would want to offer financial help, which would cut into the inheritance from her father’s side. He was a horrible person to immediately consider how the Needham family’s misfortune might affect him and his plans.

“Honestly, I think it’s rather brilliant to open the house to tours.” Margaret smoothed the folds of her modish knee-length dress. “Tourists enjoy seeing grand houses from a former century. The building should earn its maintenance at the very least. But if you require more financial assistance, please let me know. I want to do my part for the family.”

Julian Needham quickly added, “I can offer help as well. My investments are doing well enough.”

“We’re not quite destitute, although apparently our home has become a museum artifact to be gawked at by strangers,” Mr. Needham said.

“Thank you, my dears, for your generous thought. But such a discussion is most inappropriate at this celebratory occasion.” Mrs. Needham turned her attention to Hal. “Tell us how you two met.”

“We were both browsing at a bookstore. I shared a recommendation with Hal, and we talked for hours. You can see how that conversation ended.” Margaret turned her beaming smile on Hal. “Or never ended, for we always find something to discuss.”

“I was taken with Margaret from the moment we met. She manages to be both imaginative and levelheaded at the same time. One doesn’t let a quality woman like Margaret slip away.”

“Your family approves the arrangement?” Mr. Needham probed.

Hal seized a quick breath before plunging into his embroidered history. He hadn’t tried to pretend to Margaret that he came from any sort of gentility, instead inventing middle-class parents of modest means.

“My parents have passed, and I have no extended family. But I’m certain both Father and Mother would have welcomed Margaret with open arms.”

“Tell us about your parents,” Needham senior pushed.

“My father owned several shipping concerns. But in one year, a freighter was lost at sea and another seized by pirates. This put a great strain on his fortune and took a toll on his health.” Hal patted his chest, indicating possible heart failure or a broken heart. Let them decide which. “He passed away within a year, and my dear mother followed soon after. I believe she couldn’t face life without him.”

Mrs. Needham gave a soft murmur, and Margaret reached to pat Hal’s hand. He bowed his head, hoping he wasn’t overdoing the drama.

“Were you left penniless then?” Julian’s tone was cool and less than sympathetic.

“Julian!” Mrs. Needham exclaimed at his shocking ill manners.

“It’s all right, Mrs. Needham. It is quite reasonable to wonder about the stranger your niece has brought home. I should have followed custom and asked permission for her hand.” Hal offered an apologetic smile, then continued trying to reassure them he had nothing to hide.

“I invested the small inheritance I received and have increased it over the years, so I live quite comfortably. I won’t pretend to be more than I am. I come from a middle-class background, and I’m in love with a woman who is clearly above me. But I care for Margaret very much.”

The last part at least was true. Hal took her hand, gazed into her eyes, and prayed his selfish intentions could be forgiven.

Margaret smiled. “As I care for you.”

Julian made a small sound that might have signaled either acceptance or disgust.

Hal darted a sharp glance at him.

“It’s a lovely afternoon. I should like to take you on a tour of the land before supper,” Margaret said.

“Perfect weather for an invigorating walk,” Hal agreed and blessed her for freeing him from the relentless questioning.

“I’ll go with you.” Julian had not taken a seat during the entire conversation, and now he started for the door. “I should like to see how the farms are doing.”

They bid their elders goodbye and entered the hallway. Margaret excused herself to change into proper attire.

Hal had brought no walking shoes and lingered awkwardly with Julian, who scanned him up and down.

“You’ll want a pair of Wellingtons. The fields and woods are muddy. And a drover’s coat to cover this fine wool.” He fingered the lapel of Hal’s jacket, tailored for a gentleman and discovered by Hal in a secondhand store.

Julian stood so near, Hal felt the heat of his body and inhaled the scent of his shaving lotion. Did Julian mean to be intimidating? Probably, because he stared at Hal with the assessing eyes of judge, jury, and executioner.

When Julian at last stepped back, Hal took a deep breath. Unfortunately, the man wasn’t only a barrier to breach, he also unleashed attraction such as Hal hadn’t felt in a long time. Perhaps Julian sensed his desire and was baiting him to make an impulsive move.

But Hal wouldn’t reveal himself so foolishly. Nothing could come between him and the quiet, calm, comfortable life he craved. He must convince this doubting Thomas before he derailed Hal’s matrimonial plan.

Dear Readers,

I began telling stories as a child. Whenever there was a sleepover, I was the designated ghost tale teller guaranteed to frighten and thrill with macabre tales. I still have a story printed on yellow legal paper in second grade about a ghost, a witch and a talking cat.

As an adult, I enjoy reading stories about people damaged by life who find healing with a like-minded soul. When I couldn’t find enough such books, I began to write them. Whether you’re a fan of contemporary historical or fantasy romance, you’ll find something to enjoy among my books.

Book Spotlight~ Healing Him/Giveaway

Buy Links: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Length: 71,000 words

Blurb

“I hated that I was like this, but after years of trying to work through it I was beginning to feel like I’d never be normal.” ~ Cody

Hiding the fact that I was in love with my best friend Isaac used to be the most complicated part of my day, until a chance meeting with a handsome stranger named Jonah sent my life into a tailspin. Scars from my past have stopped me from giving in to my desires for so long, but I’m done being afraid. I want both men. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to trust that anyone can love me.

“I knew it was a bit messed up, but there was no jealousy or envy when I thought of my men together.” ~ Isaac

I’ve loved Cody for as long as I’ve known him, but have always held back because of his past. Then I met Jonah and I knew there was no way I could choose between them. I want it all—the man I’ve loved for so long, and the one I’m quickly falling for. It’s not going to be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

“I wanted to believe it was all true, but I couldn’t push aside the fear that I was just a distraction until the two of them got together.” ~ Jonah

After having my heart broken I never thought I’d find love again. I wasn’t looking for anything real, and then I met not one, but two men I can’t resist. Isaac and Cody are everything I ever wanted but didn’t know I could have. I want to believe the three of us can work, but a part of me can’t get past the fear that I’ll be the odd man out, again.

*This is Book 2 of The Den Boys series, but can be read as a standalone - no cliffhangers.

Excerpt

“So, start with Insidious?” I asked Cody as we flopped on his small couch.

“You’re evil.”

“What? We’ve seen it so many times you should know when the freaky parts happen. I could have said I Spit On Your Grave.”

“That movie was messed up, not scary.” Cody shook his head and took the beer I held out to him. “I’m never watching that one again.”

“True, how about The Grudge?”

“Fine, but I swear to god, if you change my ringtone to that creepy moaning noise, I’ll never speak to you again.”

I grinned and opened my computer to cue up the movie. We might be able to joke about that incident now, but at the time it had been anything but funny.

The first time we’d watched it together we’d only been friends for about a month. I’d waited until Cody had fallen asleep then downloaded the moaning sound the demon character made as his ringtone. Then I’d snuck into the bathroom, blocked my number and called his phone. We’d been at my place that night, and he’d flipped out.

I’d felt terrible at how badly I’d scared him. I’d thought he’d get a good laugh out of it and that would be the end of things, but he’d been so freaked out he hadn’t been able to sleep for hours.

That was the night I’d learned a little bit about Cody’s past, and why he hadn’t handled the joke well. It wasn’t so much the ringtone that had scared him, it had been waking up in my bed alone, scared and disoriented.

It had taken a few more months for Cody to open up and tell me more about his past, and every time he told me something new my heart broke a little bit more for him. Even now I’d learn about something he hadn’t told me yet, and I’d wish I could take away his pain.

The more time I’d spent with Cody, the more I’d realized that he was an incredible person. He wasn’t just sweet and kind, he was caring and fiercely loyal. He was also beautiful.

At five-nine he wasn’t short, but with his slender build and cherubic face he seemed so much younger than twenty-one. His big blue eyes were wide and expressive. He wore his blond hair shaved close on the sides but long on top, so it was constantly falling over his forehead and brushing the tops of his cheeks if he didn’t continuously push it back. Everything about him was so beautiful it was almost painful, and it hadn’t taken me long to fall in love with him.

If he’d been any other guy I would have asked him out on a date, and gotten to know him as a romantic interest instead of as a friend.

Talking with author Victoria Sue

What started your interest in writing? I’ve always had it – but I bought a kindle. It was fatal.

If zombies attacked what kind of supplies would you want? Batteries (for the kindle of course – what were you laughing at?)

If you could sit down with any author dead or alive who would it be? (Oscar Wilde definitely. I want to know if he really came up with those amazing quotes or he stole them)

Do you keep a notebook near your for when new ideas pop into your head?
No. I use the note pad on my cell phone.

If you write a series do you reread your previous books before you begin the new one?
Not always. I have big cheat notes.

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers? Actually there are three readers I would especially like to say something to. They’ve stuck with me since the first book and are my official beta read team. They’re amazing – thank you.

For readers who haven't tried your books yet, how do you think your editor or loyal readers would describe your books?
I’m gonna have to quote a reviewer here. She was talking about the Sirius’ Wolves series. “Book one enthralled me. Book two broke me. Book three fixed me.”

I’m always looking for book recommendations. What books have you been reading? Would you recommend them?
My favorite mm author has to be Jessie G – For a reason. My favorite m/f author is Cherise Sinclair.

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?
Lol. I have trouble fitting day to day stuff in.

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?
Sirius Wolves – The Promise - is on its way, and I am submitting an mm English regency historical. I am hoping to get to the fourth book in my Pure series very soon.

Now let's take a look into Victoria Sue's Eternal Circle...

Eternal Circle - extracts

According to legend the goddess Sirius gifted humankind with powerful werewolf shifters, to bring balance and peace to the planet that both species called home – Earth.
The great god Orion was pleased with his wife’s final efforts, and the werewolves he allowed to be created showed such equal amounts of strength and compassion that humans were awed and showed their gratitude by adding a full five feast days to their calendar to commemorate them. The days were named after the five oldest gods: Osiris, Heru, Set, Isis, and Nephthys.
But one god was jealous. Anubis had worked tirelessly for years weighing the hearts of the dead for their goodness, and granting the dead passage into heaven or escorting them to hell. He was incensed that the ungrateful humans didn’t show him proper homage, and decided to sabotage the plans that Sirius had made.
He couldn’t stop Sirius’ creation but decided that some of the wolves would be given the gifts that the dead laid at Anubis’ feet, as a way for them to barter their fate. These were special attributes, the ones that enabled humans to navigate their way to hell, and the ones that wolves weren’t naturally born with.
Anubis sat back after his efforts and smiled. For every wolf and human born with strength and compassion, there would be one born with hate, greed, and jealousy. Some strong, some weak. Mostly the gifts of strength and compassion would win, but every so often a wolf would find hate, and greed, and grow strong and powerful with it. Anubis had cunning and had to do this out of sight of Orion. The great god just had his wife, Sirius, returned to him, and Anubis could not do anything that would risk his wrath. No, he had to work stealthily, as if Sirius’ creation had gone bad all on its own and he had no hand in it. Anubis watched as the gods all agreed there could be no more interference in human lives and he smiled. His own creations would bring down the werewolves and they would infect others. Anubis had patience and could wait for those days, for they would be glorious.

Talking with Morticia Knight today

What’s Your Favorite Valentine’s Day Getaway?

Hi Dawn, and thank you for having me at your blog today! I know it seems as though the holidays were just here five minutes ago, but we are only a month away from Valentine’s Day. I’m able to keep careful track of these things because the grocery store is kind enough to change out the cupcakes with plastic Santa Claus’s to the ones with plastic pink and red hearts.

I’m curious how important getting away for Valentine’s Day is for you. This year it falls on a Friday, so it could be a great opportunity for a romantic weekend trip. I’ve even gone to the beach this time of the year. You can get better rates and if you get a place with a little fireplace, there’s nothing like the crash of the surf and the backdrop of a fireplace to heat up the romance. But since that weekend will probably be super busy, planning now would be a good idea. What would be your idea of the perfect Valentine’s weekend getaway? Do you prefer the beautiful and relaxing outdoors, or is a luxurious restaurant or resort more your style?

Valentine’s Day fell on a Saturday in 1925, and in the newly released Tarnished Glitter (Gin & Jazz 3), Jack Stone’s older film star lover, Roman Pasquale, plans a romantic getaway for their first Valentine’s together. The pampered screen idol is sacrificing his own preferences to take Jack somewhere that the young actor would enjoy – the Sequoia National Forest. Jack loves all that nature falderal that Roman doesn’t understand. If it was left up to him, he would go to a five-star resort. Roman has Juan, Jack’s handsome chauffeur, drive them to the forest and to be available should they need anything. Now that they’re at their remote destination, all Roman can think of is getting Jack alone in their cabin. First however, he has to deal with some unexpected developments.

Blurb:
Jack and Roman’s love grows seemingly stronger as Jack’s star rises, and he is determined to build a life with the sexually overwhelming screen idol. But hiding from the truth doesn’t make it any less real.

Jack has given himself completely to screen god Roman Pasquale – body and heart. Jack forces himself to let go of the promise of what could have been with Nick, and focus on the enchanted moments with his film star lover instead, despite Roman’s jealous and controlling behaviour.

Roman’s paranoia and fear about losing the much younger Jack threatens to destroy the only real happiness Roman has ever had. Jack is a wonder and a gift to him, yet he can’t seem to just accept their charmed life together – he is determined to make Jack into the perfect partner. He believes that constant sexual attention, lavish gifts, and declarations of love will ensure that Jack never has a reason to leave him.

The pressures of being on the silver screen and being the lover of a demanding movie idol is difficult for the sensitive young man to handle, and Roman’s increasingly erratic behaviour only adds to his stress. Unwanted attention from other men and a startling revelation from movie star Trixie Fox add to Jack’s confusion. All he’s ever wanted was true love, so how can he give up on Roman and the star’s promises of forever?
(This is book 3 of a four part serial best read in order. The series begins with Hollywood Bound)

Excerpt from Tarnished Glitter (Gin & Jazz 3) copyright 2013 Morticia Knight

But now he was ready to give Jack the gift of his hands, tongue and cock. To that end, Roman had waited until Jack had gone to use the outhouse, and had quickly dug his joy powder from the inside pocket of his suit coat for a quick toot.
There was a knock at the door, and Roman called for Juan to enter. He noticed that Jack and Juan had barely acknowledged one another the entire trip, and he wondered if the two had experienced a falling out of some sort. Juan wordlessly performed the task of building the fire and readying the champagne and glasses. He also arranged the roses and candles that had been requested by Roman for their special night.
“Thank you, Juan. That is all.” Juan silently left, and Roman crawled onto the bearskin rug next to the fire to await Jack who was still fussing in the tiny kitchen area. Roman’s patience was at an end. His dick was quite impatient as well.
“Jack, love, can that wait?”
“We have to be careful, Roman, the pamphlet said that bears will try to break in if they smell any food.”
“Please tell me that you are jesting.”
Jack looked over his shoulder. “No. The paper is over there if you want to look at it.”
That piece of information was successful at softening his erection.
Goddammit.
Roman ran his hands over the rug he was lying on. He shivered. Perhaps this very bear had tried to eat the previous tenants. God, how he despised the outdoors. He jumped up and went to the door.
“Where are you going?”
“I need to use the facilities. I’ll be right back.”
Nervously treading across the troublesome pine needles in his leather slippers, he approached Juan who leaned against the Rolls, smoking. Juan seemed surprised to see him.
“Juan, I have a request of you.”
“Certainly, sir.”
“I need you to wait inside the Rolls, and keep an eye on our cabin until I come back out and tell you it is okay to retire.”
“Sir?”
“Go and get a blanket if it’s too cold. But hurry. The bears might come while you’re gone.”
Roman could swear that he saw the play of a smile across Juan’s lips, but doubted it was possible. Juan knew better. It was probably just the shadows from the twilight playing tricks.
“Would you prefer I stay the entire night?”
“That won’t be necessary. There’s not a chance I am shutting my eyes again until we are off this dreadful mountain. I just need someone to watch over the cabin while Jack and I… Well, anyway, do hurry.”
This time, Roman could swear that he saw sadness cross Juan’s face. He shook his head. Not only was the wilderness filled with deadly creatures—and devoid of indoor plumbing—but the lack of proper light made it impossible to tell what was going on half the time.

Excerpt:

In a perfect world, there would be no accidents, no need for nannies, an undo button. Will parked the SUV, jogged up the steps to the house. Late. In a perfect world, there'd be thirty more seconds in every minute.

He could hear voices from the front room. Thank god for Beverly.

"Hey, guys. Sorry. Traffic and I had a client call." He dropped his keys in the bowl by the door, unfastened his jacket, and hurried into the rom.

Beverly looked at him, shook her head. God, she looked like Dale. "You're always late, honey."

"Guilty."

A gorgeous guy stood up, hand held out. "Hi there. I'm Benji Rafter."

"Hey Benji. I'm Will. You've met my mother in law." He answered politely enough, but his internal monologue was going crazy. No. No men. He was going to kick Bev's butt.

"I have. And the kids. They're beautiful."

Bev gave him a look. "Benji had them down for a nap in about two minutes."

He looked back, trying so fucking hard not to just stamp his feet and beg her not to leave him here with them.

"Did you want me to step into the kitchen?" Benji asked after a few moments.

"No. No, I'm just... old and tired of things changing." He sat down, his back screaming at him. "Tell me about yourself. Why the fuck would anyone want to be a nanny?"

Benji's eyes went wide, but he sat and cleared his throat. "Because I love kids. And it's not just a line, I do."

"Have you always wanted to do this?"

"Will, pretend to be nice," Beverly murmured.

"No, that's all right, Beverly. If I'm taking care of his children, he needs to trust that I have their best interest at heart." Benji turned back to him. The man had the greenest eyes he'd ever seen. "I've always known I wanted to make kids' lives better. Eventually I realized the best way I could do that was to be a nanny."

"How long have you worked with kids?"

"For seven years, with two different families. The last one was twin boys." Benji smiled, the expression going right to his eyes. "Twins are special."

Will nodded. "They are." Special. Loud. Demanding.

"Your girls are beautiful." Benji grinned suddenly. "Have you invested in a shotgun already?"

Will started chuckling, at once tickled and horrified at the thought of his girls dating.

"Not that I'm advocating violence." Benji gave him a wink. Fuck, the man was charming.

"I am. No one's dating my girls."

Beverly snorted and Benji laughed softly.

"Fortunately you have many years to fight that, huh?" Bev looked at him. "You need the help, Will. You cannot raise these girls without some assistance and..."

"And you have a better offer." He winked at her, softening the words. Christ, she'd been with him for a year, as soon as Dale had been hit by the car. She'd been the first one to hold the twins, to see them. What the hell was he going to do?

"You can check my references, I come highly recommended and I've already met the girls -- they're darling. I'm between families right now, so I can start whenever you need me."

"I..." Fuck, his head hurt.

"Have you eaten today, Will?" Bev sounded so concerned and he glared at her. He didn't need mothering.

"I'm fine, Mom."

"You're a type one diabetic, Will. You have to eat."

"Bev!"

"She's right, Sir. You need to keep your sugars in line. Are any of the kids diabetic? Let me make you a snack. Call it part of the job interview." Benji stood, looking at him expectantly.

"I." Wait. Wait. He was the boss. He was the dad. He managed.

"He loves peanut butter and blackberry jam sandwiches."

"Mom!"

"Oh, those are my specialty." Smiling, Benji disappeared in the direction of the kitchen.

A Family of His Own will be out December 18 from Torquere Press.

I hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving!
