Hi everyone,

Today I’m sharing a look at my contemporary romance releases, Cupid’s Schemes Volumes 1 & 2. As some readers may know, I write romances in all genres (historical, fantasy, gay, paranormal, and contemporary) at all heat levels, but these novellas are something new for me. Instead of full-length romances, each book is a collection of flash-fiction stories.

Both volumes contain a dozen or more sweet romances where the characters meet under unusual circumstances and develop an intense connection. And that’s where I leave them—at the start of their relationship. Why?

I wanted to show how two people meet, feel a spark of romance, and then leave the rest of the story up to the reader’s imagination. What happens next is up to you. I end each story with the characters in good places and the potential to have a happy-ever-after ending with their new love interest. These feel-good stories are perfect for a boost of romance whenever or wherever you need it.

The settings vary from New Year’s Eve parties to snowstorms, summer picnics, and even a haunted corn maze. I grouped the stories by season, so as you read through each book, you’ll be following the calendar year. And believe it or not, some of these settings and “first meets” were inspired by true stories people have told me over the years.

New Year, New Love

 

“This New Year’s Eve party is going to be fun. I’m glad you could come at the last minute,” Sharon said to Diana as they stepped into the hotel lobby.

“Thanks for inviting me. I didn’t want to let your extra ticket go to waste,” Diana replied. She hated to admit that she’d had no other plans for tonight other than to curl up on the couch and watch a movie. She turned as Sharon’s boyfriend, Matt, and another man strolled up to them.

“You remember my cousin Eric, don’t you?” Sharon asked.

Diana gazed up at the six-foot-three blond hunk. Eric looked absolutely adorable in his dark gray suit, crisp white shirt, and blue and gray striped tie.

“Yes, of course.” How could she ever forget Eric? Even though she had only spent an afternoon with him, meeting a dreamboat like Eric stayed with a girl for a long time.

“Hi Eric. Happy New Year,” she said, then glanced at Sharon, confused. Why was Eric here? Was he alone? Where was his girlfriend, Melissa?

Eric stepped to her side. “Hi Diana. It’s nice to see you again. Can I take your coat?”

“Sure. Thanks.” She let Eric help her out of her gray wool coat. She caught his eyes roving down the front of her midnight-blue dress. She almost hadn’t worn the low-cut dress tonight, but then reconsidered. Why not? It was New Year’s Eve and she should dress up and look nice, even if she was single. One of her New Year’s resolutions was to jumpstart her boring life, starting tonight.

They handed their coats to the coat check attendant and strolled into a grand ballroom decorated in silver and gold. Eric kept pace with her as they followed Sharon and Matt to a table.

“This is some change, huh?” Eric said as he pulled out a chair for her. “The last time I saw you it was ninety degrees outside and we were both in a pool.”

Diana felt a blush creep into her cheeks. “I know. Sharon’s Labor Day party seems like yesterday.” She sighed as she recalled seeing Eric’s lean, tan body in nothing but blue swim trunks. She and Eric had gotten along fabulously at the party and they had a lot in common. They had been having harmless fun playing volleyball when Melissa showed up and everything went to hell.

But Melissa wasn’t here tonight. Did that mean Eric was single?

She looked at Eric and felt her pulse surge. Now she was elated that she had accepted Sharon’s invitation. This was one New Year’s Eve she’d never forget.

As Molly turned to the bathroom door, the water shut off, and someone moved around inside.  Something fell to the floor, followed by a masculine voice cursing.  Molly’s legs and mouth refused to obey her, leaving her frozen and silent as the door opened and a man stepped out.

Now Molly’s mouth worked again, but only to loosen her jaw and prevent her from picking it up again.  He was a very tall man, even factoring in how short Molly was.  She was level with his chest - his very nice chest - and he was looking down at her from an unfairly high vantage point.  He blinked a few times, then closed his eyes for a really long time as if expecting her to vanish into thin air when he opened them again.  Molly would’ve liked to try that herself, but even without seeing him she smelled the hotel soap on his wet skin and heard his breathing.

“Uh…” she said.  Her eyes dropped to the white bath towel around his waist.  A trail of hair started at his belly button and trailed down a defined stomach and- ‘What the hell is wrong with you?  Stop looking there!’

Molly’s spine straightened. She looked right at his eyes and nowhere else. 

“What are you doing here?” he asked, voice deep and husky. 

Molly had read somewhere once that the human mind was not capable of creating faces or voices.  If you heard someone’s voice in your head, odds were good it came from someone you knew in your everyday life.  That must’ve been true, because if Molly had heard a voice that rich, she would have remembered it.

“Pulling the sheets down,” she said.  She glanced one more time at his suitcase.  “This is my hotel room.”

“That’s funny,” said the man.  “This is my hotel room, too.”

“What a coincidence,” said Molly.

And here she’d been hoping for a weekend without problems.

Top Ten Small or Inexpensive Valentines Gifts from Summer Devon & Bonnie Dee

For our novella, Will and the Valentine Saint, Bonnie and I did research about how the Victorians celebrated February Fourteenth.

On to the celebration! The Victorians went all out when it came to Valentine’s Day—with cards, that is. Christmas cards weren’t in vogue yet and Valentine’s Day cards were commercially produced decades before them. The Major Romantic Occasion phenomenon we know wasn’t in place. That meant most people didn’t pull out the wallet for more than a bit of pasteboard and perhaps a pair of gloves.

If you’re going authentically Victorian, you probably won’t get pearls and diamonds because, other than the cards, the rituals we think of as standard weren’t in place. Interestingly enough, people in previous eras had given more extravagant love tokens but that had mostly fallen out of style, perhaps because Victorians often sent cards to a number of people to mark the day, not just romantic partners. One person theorized that the long economic downturn in the late 1880s helped keep Valentine’s Day less excessive.

If you want to celebrate in the lower key, here are some other less-expensive ways authors tell me they consider appropriate for a special occasion.

Some describe their ideal romantic celebrations.

1.       For me going "out" on Valentine's Day is not fun, relaxing or romantic. Restaurants are overburdened which usually means the service and food are not up to their usual snuff. Since I live in New England and am not a snow bunny, outdoor activities are out. For this reason if my husband were to make me breakfast (served in bed or at the table is fine), give me time to soak in a bubble bath, followed by a foot massage... I'd think I were in Heaven. If he followed that up with a "movie date" (our living room, snuggled on the couch with popcorn, Lindt chocolate and a movie I WANT to see) the day would be perfect, fun, relaxing and very romantic.—Gail Chianese

2.       I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I’d like to wake up to the smell of blueberry pancakes and bacon. From there, flowers are nice, as is chocolate and a sweet, heartfelt card. I’m also not opposed to a nice dinner out and a late dessert. [Nothing too expensive of course!]—P.J. Sharon

But, again, no cards/flowers/little gifts. So, one year—I don’t know why—but he presented me with an angel’s food cake covered in fresh whipped cream and strawberries. 6.       The cheapest valentine was my most memorable one—and the first one with Mr. Darcy. He Fed-exed a giant handmade heart card. He wasn’t an artist or anything so it wasn’t super fancy but it was personal and thoughtful. Not something quickly picked up at the supermarket. What’s Your Favorite Valentine’s Day Getaway?

Hi Dawn, and thank you for having me at your blog today! I know it seems as though the holidays were just here five minutes ago, but we are only a month away from Valentine’s Day. I’m able to keep careful track of these things because the grocery store is kind enough to change out the cupcakes with plastic Santa Claus’s to the ones with plastic pink and red hearts.  

I’m curious how important getting away for Valentine’s Day is for you. This year it falls on a Friday, so it could be a great opportunity for a romantic weekend trip. I’ve even gone to the beach this time of the year. You can get better rates and if you get a place with a little fireplace, there’s nothing like the crash of the surf and the backdrop of a fireplace to heat up the romance. But since that weekend will probably be super busy, planning now would be a good idea. What would be your idea of the perfect Valentine’s weekend getaway? Do you prefer the beautiful and relaxing outdoors, or is a luxurious restaurant or resort more your style?

Valentine’s Day fell on a Saturday in 1925, and in the newly released Tarnished Glitter (Gin & Jazz 3), Jack Stone’s older film star lover, Roman Pasquale, plans a romantic getaway for their first Valentine’s together. The pampered screen idol is sacrificing his own preferences to take Jack somewhere that the young actor would enjoy – the Sequoia National Forest. Jack loves all that nature falderal that Roman doesn’t understand. If it was left up to him, he would go to a five-star resort. But now he was ready to give Jack the gift of his hands, tongue and cock. To that end, Roman had waited until Jack had gone to use the outhouse, and had quickly dug his joy powder from the inside pocket of his suit coat for a quick toot.

There was a knock at the door, and Roman called for Juan to enter. He noticed that Jack and Juan had barely acknowledged one another the entire trip, and he wondered if the two had experienced a falling out of some sort. Juan wordlessly performed the task of building the fire and readying the champagne and glasses. He also arranged the roses and candles that had been requested by Roman for their special night.

“Thank you, Juan. That is all.” Juan silently left, and Roman crawled onto the bearskin rug next to the fire to await Jack who was still fussing in the tiny kitchen area. Roman’s patience was at an end. His dick was quite impatient as well.

“Jack, love, can that wait?”

“We have to be careful, Roman, the pamphlet said that bears will try to break in if they smell any food.”

“Please tell me that you are jesting.”

Jack looked over his shoulder. “No. The paper is over there if you want to look at it.”

That piece of information was successful at softening his erection.

Goddammit.

Roman ran his hands over the rug he was lying on. He shivered. Perhaps this very bear had tried to eat the previous tenants. God, how he despised the outdoors. He jumped up and went to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“I need to use the facilities. I’ll be right back.”

Nervously treading across the troublesome pine needles in his leather slippers, he approached Juan who leaned against the Rolls, smoking. Juan seemed surprised to see him.

“Juan, I have a request of you.”

“Certainly, sir.”

“I need you to wait inside the Rolls, and keep an eye on our cabin until I come back out and tell you it is okay to retire.”

“Sir?”

“Go and get a blanket if it’s too cold. But hurry. The bears might come while you’re gone.”

Roman could swear that he saw the play of a smile across Juan’s lips, but doubted it was possible. Juan knew better. It was probably just the shadows from the twilight playing tricks.

“Would you prefer I stay the entire night?”

“That won’t be necessary. There’s not a chance I am shutting my eyes again until we are off this dreadful mountain. I just need someone to watch over the cabin while Jack and I… Well, anyway, do hurry.”

This time, Roman could swear that he saw sadness cross Juan’s face. He shook his head. Not only was the wilderness filled with deadly creatures—and devoid of indoor plumbing—but the lack of proper light made it impossible to tell what was going on half the time.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

Extended entry period for Love Romances and More Reviews Announces the "Most Romantic Love Scene Ever" contest!

 

 

Have you written what you and/or your readers have said is the most romantic love scene ever?  Have you written a scene that readers would love to have come true for their Valentine's day?

 

Love Romances and More Reviews announces it's Most Romantic Love Scene Ever contest.  This contest, which is $5 per entry, will have two levels to determine the most romantic love scene ever:

 

For the first round, using a 6 base criteria our judges will choose the top 5 chapters depicting your most romantic love scene ever.  The top 5 entries will then go on to round 2. Our reading period begins January 15 and will run until January 31, 2014.  Entries must be received no later than January 14, 2014. (See below for submission information) and should be no more than 15 pages. 

 

For round 2 we will post the top 5 chapters on our website and for reading ease, at the Love Romances Cafe, for readers to vote on the most romantic love scene.  Public voting will take place betweenFebruary 1 and February 7, 2014.  The winner, who will be announced on February 14, 2014 will receive a page at the Love Romances and More Reviews website for a year to promote their book.

 

The contest is open to the first 50 entries.  Contest applications can be obtained from Angie at angie@ loveromancesandmorereviews.com .   She will give you directions on how to submit the title of your book, name, the chapter depicting your most romantic love scene and submission payment.  NOTE:  Given our overall readership NOgraphic or hard core erotic scenes will be considered. We want to be able to post full excerpts of the finalists.
