GENRE:  Historical Romance

Sadly ever after . . . unless some dreams really do come true?

Elinor Burkenstock never believed in fairy tales. Sure, she’s always been a fool for love—what woman isn’t? But Elinor knows the difference between fiction and truth. Daydreams and reality. True love and false promises. . . . Until the unthinkable happens, and Elinor’s engagement is suddenly terminated and no one, least of all her fiancĂ©, will tell her why.

Sir Michael Rollins’s war-hero days seem far behind him when, after one last hurrah before his wedding, he gets shot and his injuries leave him in dire shape. He wants nothing more than to marry Elinor, the woman of his wildest dreams. But Elinor’s father forbids it . . . and soon Michael is faced with a desperate choice: Spare Elinor a life with a broken man or risk everything to win her heart—until death do they part?

Excerpt One:

Foolish Bride

Her heart beat wildly. “But is that not why you pursued me?”

He kissed the tip of her nose. “I will not deny I came to London this season because I needed to marry to restore the money that my father squandered.” He kissed her cheek. “I had every intention of finding a rich bride to enable that plan.” He kissed her other cheek. “Then I met you, and you were the perfect solution to my problems.”

She tried to pull away,  but he held her close and kissed her lips. It was only a peck, but the thrill of it traveled to her toes and hit everywhere in between.

His body filled all her curves as he hugged her and spread kisses along her cheek and neck. “I knew you were the one, Elinor. So beautiful, charming, and sweet, I could not resist you. I want to be worthy of your love, and in the weeks we courted, I found a way to get enough money to repair my country home and still have enough to make a good start of the marriage. I made the deal on some grain. It will take a bit of time for my plans to pan out, but in a couple of months, I should be able to show your father that I am worthy of you.”

Sworn to protect the crown, a Knight of the Swan must never surrender—not even to love . . .

England, 1415. Ordered never to leave the lonely tower on her family estate, Lady Clarice Margrave is suddenly set free when her home is plundered. Now she is determined to discover the truth behind her father’s alleged treason. But an act of daring only propels her into a new prison, with the very knight who destroyed her home as her keeper. Sir Ranulf, Lord of Sedgewic, is ruthless in his inquisition, though there is a searing tenderness in his touch. Is it possible her bold jailor is the Red Wolf of whom her father spoke—and the one man she might be able to trust?

As a knight, Ranulf never questions his troth, but his beautiful prisoner stirs his heart and mind like no other. Clarice is achingly vulnerable—and extremely closed-mouth about her possible ties to the plot against the king. Duty demands he keep his distance, though he yearns to take her to his bed and adore her until he discovers what lies within her heart. And he would—if he weren’t in danger of losing his own . . .

Title: A Taste of Temptation
Author: Heather McGovern
Publisher: Lyrical Shine
Genre: Women's Fiction
Format: Ecopy

Nestled in the lush green mountains of North Carolina, the Honeywilde Inn will be a romantic’s dream getaway, if only the Bradley siblings can keep it running. It will take a combination of hard work, good luck, and the kind of love that dreams are made of . . .

Sophie Bradley can always count on Wright. He's not just her brother’s best friend, he's practically part of the family. His honesty and willingness to listen are a constant comfort, and his culinary skills are a huge selling point for the inn. But when a casual moment in the kitchen turns electric, an impulsive kiss leaves her weak in the knees—a kiss Wright dismisses as “temporary insanity” and insists will never happen again.

How could he have done it? Wright feels like a big enough jerk, disappointing his parents with his career choices—plus he's secretly entertaining job offers from restaurants coast-to-coast. He's betraying everyone . . . and now he's kissed his best friend's sister. The only option is to hit the brakes, hard. But once Sophie's been kissed, she can't be unkissed, and as things start falling apart around him, Wright wonders if a momentary lapse might be the beginning of something extraordinary.

Excerpt #1
Misty Lake, New York, 1882

Everyone wished she had died with the others. Maddie Sutter had accepted this truth long ago. But much to the small town’s dismay, she insisted on living and breathing despite it.

Straightening her shoulders, she lifted her chin against the barrage of eyes watching her every move as she forged down Main Street. After three years of suffering this unwelcome attention each time she ventured to town, one would think she’d have grown used to the assault.

Maddie had resigned herself to many things since the accident, but she’d never adapt to the dread her presence induced in those she had known all her life—those who had once loved and cared for her.

With a fortifying breath, she approached a cluster of young boys on the corner. The same wretched imps had greeted her earlier when they’d spied her arrival in downtown Misty Lake. She braced herself for a repeat performance of the cruel rhyme they’d composed in her honor.

“Four dead girls on the slab, on the twelfth day of May. On Friday the thirteenth, one girl walked away.”
Refusing to alter her course, Maddie strode straight toward them. Her lungs swelled with triumph as the alarmed little brats scattered like mice. With another fractional lift of her chin, she swept onward and rounded the corner.

She entered the general mercantile, the jingling bell on the door her only greeting as she stepped inside. Along with a handful of patrons, the store housed a hodgepodge of scents. Aromas of charcoal and beeswax mingled with the sweet smell of cinnamon and apples. Renewed by the boon to her senses, she enjoyed the whiff of fond memories that came with it. She shopped quickly, spurred on by the hushed whispers echoing through the aisles as she browsed the shelves.

Gathering a bag of sugar, a tin of baking powder, and the other items on her list, she headed to the front of the store, then placed them on the polished counter.

“Good morning, Mr. Piedmont,” she said with a smile.

He wiped his hands on his bibbed apron and took a step forward.

“Madeline.”

With a curt nod, he lowered his somber eyes to the items on the counter and began to tally her purchases.

Maddie’s smile faded, her mind drifting back to the days when Mr. Piedmont’s face would light up to see her and her friends bounding into the mercantile. The Fair Five, as they were known back then, had charmed everyone. The girls had hardly put away their pinafores when they first learned to use their collective wit and beauty to full advantage. The Five always left Mr. Piedmont’s store lapping at complimentary peppermint sticks, pressed upon them by the kindly merchant with a playful wink.

Maddie took a deep breath, forcing away thoughts of the past and the accident that had snatched her friends from this world. At twenty-four-years old, Maddie was a living reminder and the sole survivor of the worst tragedy in Misty Lake’s history. People could barely stand to look at her. And Maddie couldn’t blame them. She could barely stand to look at herself.

Guest Author Day with Susie Medwell

Welcome to my Reading Nook, Susie Medwell. Please make yourself at home and let my cabana boys/girls get you a drink.

Comfortable? Very! Thanks for inviting me over Dawn J

Wonderful. Now let’s get started.

Tell us about your favorite character from your books.
I love Ben from ‘Text me, Tweet me Need me’. For a start he’s gorgeous (always an advantage), he listens (I love that in a man), is fun to be around, sticks to his word and has just that right amount of possessiveness making a girl feel wanted but not smothered.

Tell us about your current/upcoming release. What inspired this story?
I like writing ‘up to the minute’ contemporary stories about characters with lives we can relate to, so the idea of basing a story around social networking and the press was unavoidable! ‘Text me, Tweet me, Need me’ is about two people who meet online and find each other irresistible, but both have secrets that could destroy everything.

When in the day/night do you write? How long per day?
I have a day job working part of the morning and part of the afternoon so I have to fit writing around that. Mid-afternoon seems to be my most productive time, then I have to cut it short and run (literally!) to work. I usually have lots more ideas whilst I’m at work and so the second I’m in the door I pick my laptop up again – my poor son has to put up with some late dinners.

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Finding time to write! I find it so frustrating when the words are flowing and I have to stop.

What does your family think of your writing career?
They’re proud, but refuse to read my naughtier (Zara Stoneley) books – ‘Text me’ is a book I can let my mother read!

What do you think makes a good story?
Realism with a hint of escapism. I read to get away from everyday trivia, but I have to believe that the characters, and events, could happen.

Plotter or Pantser? Why?
A mix! I plot – but not rigidly, so I suppose I’m a plotter with a bit of pantser thrown in. I have character descriptions and an overall plan with the main plot points (turning points, black moment), then I plan in detail the first quarter – what happens and how the characters grow – when I’ve written those chapters I plan out the next quarter in detail. The story tends to evolve as I write, so I never do a full detailed plan at the start. I need goals to work towards so having a rough plan helps me.

How do you develop your plots and your characters? Do you use any set formula?
It all starts with a ‘what if’, then I look at the characters and their goals, motivations and conflicts. I need to know what is the worst things that could happen to them and why, and then I look at their strengths and how they can use them to overcome their fears. I then decide where the story should start (a turning point) and how it will end. I’ve got an outline sheet based very loosely on Blake Snyder's Beat Sheet from ‘Save the Cat’ which I use to help with pacing. I know this type of planning would drive some writers mad – but it helps me, especially when I hit a sticky patch!

What book are you reading now? Any favorite authors/books you want to do a shout out for? I’ve just finished a Jackie Collins book – the first I’ve read for years, which was great holiday reading. I read all kinds of books, but would hate to single anyone out in particular.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
Walk, horse-ride, cook or play guitar with my other half.

Morning Person or Night Person?
Night. I am not at my best first thing in the morning (Mrs Grumpy) and it takes an hour and several cups of coffee before I get going properly.

Coffee, tea or other drink to get you moving in the morning? Coffee – lots of coffee, I can’t do mornings without it!

What is coming up from you in 2013? Anything you want to tease us with?
I’ve got several project on the go at the moment. I write erotic romance under the pen-name Zara Stoneley and I’ve got another book in the Good Enough series due out later this year. My next Susie Medwell title has a sexy geek girl and a playboy in it – more news on that one in a few months’ time.

Anything else you want to add?

“Sam.” He reached out to unbutton her top, but she stopped him. She had to do this herself; it had to be her choice. He slowly stripped the rest of his clothes off, flicked the jet of water on. Not saying anything.
She could stop now. Ignore him and walk away. Or she could join him, in his shower, next to his office with his perfect secretary still typing away on the other side of the wall.
He stepped in. She couldn’t help herself, she walked over and her gaze locked onto his back; broad shoulders and perfect slim hips. Perfect toned ass. As she’d known it would be.
He stood perfectly still, his face raised to let the water stream over it. His eyes closed, only his erection betraying his awareness of her.
Her hands shook as she unbuttoned her jacket and her skirt slipped on to the floor, her gaze never leaving him. Then it was his turn, a tremble running through him as she put her hands against his back...

BLURB
Azzette Bettencourt spilled brain cells and broke bones, but three years later she's confident she'll return to her life in the lab to create space-age laser gadgets. Unfortunately, her parents don't agree. They compromise and she returns to her roots in Alaska to spend the summer at her cousin's bed and breakfast. They're expecting her to relax, live an organic lifestyle and discover her boundaries. She's expecting to build a revolutionary weather sensor, her ticket back to an independent life.

Builder Aiden Shaughnessy's looking for time away from raising the last of his six siblings. Bonus? Some good old Alaskan adventure. If a fifties kind of woman wants to take care of him, life will be damn near perfect. The one he finds can cook, but she's trickier than a double-blind dovetail joint. Other than the fact she likes her diamonds inside a laser, she's as much a handful as the siblings when they were younger. Except she's made a gizmo that contributes to his brother's successful ascent of Mt. McKinley after the year's biggest storm. Is he ready for a life with a woman as brilliant as Einstein, but with the curiosity and attention span of a toddler

Warning: Carpenters, climbers, chickens and bears... Oh my!

Mini Excerpt:
My accident had interrupted the contract I was deeply involved in. Progress had been stalled once I was out of the game. No one else had been quite able to follow my thinking, a fact the Director of Research and Development had griped about one of the times he came to see me. He’d kindly waited until after I could identify myself and count my fingers and toes again. The rants were not because he wanted to make me feel bad, but rather, I think he wanted me to know I was missed. And he wanted to me to heal fast and get back to work before he had to find someone to take my place.
I missed being there and it was my supreme goal to get back. However, that required a doctor’s approval, and until I passed a few more brain tests, they weren’t signing on the dotted line. Which was why I’d flown to Alaska in the first place. To build new paths around damaged memory cells. Part of which included new experiences, such as, maybe, wooing the opposite sex.
And Mr. Paul Bunyan looked like a viable candidate to practice on.

Long Excerpt:
“Make love to me,” Azzette murmured against his lips.
Wanting nothing less, he prepared to do just that. Take her. Mark her as his.
But the other conscience burst into his head. Funny, it sounded like his father. “Men don’t ravage women without great thought. Be the one gentleman in her life.”
Damn, but he hated having a conscience. Da’s words were as clear as if he stood right there.
Besides, Aiden didn’t have a condom on him. Strike two. And she had an injury of some sort. One he wanted to know about before going further. Strike three. His ardor cooled enough he could focus on her needs and ignore his. A Shaughnessy never took advantage of a woman. Period. Not for any reason.
Ah, but she tasted so sweet and fit him so well. She mewled and rubbed against him. “Touch me more,” she moaned.
“Not tonight, my darlin’.” The hardest words he’d ever said. “It’s not right, and somewhere in your head you know it.” He kissed her again, deeply, imprinting her taste and feel on all his senses. The sounds of her little moans and gasps, the passionate glaze over her eyes and the thick hair tumbling from her turban. He took it all in, the sight, the sounds, the touch of her hands beneath his shirt. The scent of her, heated and drugging, as he inhaled it with the scents of the forest.
Truly regretful, he eased his hands from her body, then hers from under his shirt. He suspected he’d feel her touch the whole night through. Her hand had felt that good on his skin.
“Time to get you home, Cinderella. Or your cousin will be looking for me, and I’d rather not get in a brawl with him. Right would be on his side.”
The passion drained from her and she slumped against his chest. “You’re right.”
They resumed their meandering trek. This time with arms wrapped around each other, Azzette leaning on him a little more with each passing moment. Each step leading them up to the large log structure.
“Here we are. One Cinderella delivered, safe and sound.” He eased away and looked down at her feet. “And well shod.”
She smiled up at him, appearing half asleep. “So it would seem.”
Reluctant to end the night, Aiden tucked a loose strand of hair into the scarf around her head. “So. Tomorrow night? Can I interest you in meeting me for drinks or dinner?”
“Hmm.”
She regarded him blearily and smiled, but in a distracted manner. He had to wonder how much was due to the beer, the unrequited passion, or plain jetlag. Or her unknown injury to the head.
“Where do you want to meet?”
Okay, so she didn’t want to be picked up.
“Where do you want to meet?” He tossed the question back at her.
“Twisted Creek?”
“Okay. Time?”
She shrugged. “What works for you?”
“Six? Seven?”
“Seven.”
“I’ll meet you there.”
She was still holding his arm, looking up at him with large dreamy brown eyes. The urge to kiss her was almost overwhelming and he started to lean down when she abruptly released him and turned away.
“See you!” she chirped, and went into the building. The door shut in his face. He heard the thump of a deadbolt sliding home.
That was it? Aiden could have sworn she’d been about to invite him to stay. Then in the blink of an eye, it was as if her memory had been wiped and they hadn’t been touching for the last half hour.
