Ashton looked over at the man standing closest to him. He was one of the mid-level students, quite handsome, perfectly proportioned and seemingly amiable enough. There was another young man several people down in the corner even cuter than the others who he’d caught studying him earlier and who was studying him again now. One of the masters had referred to him as Ky, one of the few names they did mention. Perhaps he could make his way down the line to where the student was. Either way, it meant Ashton would have to start a conversation. It was time to break the ice, and he’d start with the mid-level student nearby.

“You have an incredible staff!”

“Excuse me?” The man’s eyes grew large, and he instinctively moved to cover his privates, which had never really been a concern to keep private up until this moment. After all, there was nothing to feel on display about in front of eighty-five-year-old emissaries.

All ears in the room were now tuned into their conversation.

“And it’s longer than average, but nice and smooth, which is a testament to your technique,” Ashton complimented him. “So few understand the importance of how to handle their staff these days. I’ve actually had extensive training with longer staffs as well as much thicker ones. Sadly, I find that if the girth is too big, it detracts from how versatile I can be while handling it. The long ones aren’t as much trouble, and I like where the extra couple of inches can impact. As for the shorter ones, they’re easier to control, especially if someone is prone to prematurely plunging it all over the place.”

“He means your Bo Staff,” a higher-level student leaned in and whispered into the mid-level student’s ear. “Breathe.”

The mid-level student gasped in relief and also because he actually had stopped breathing, unsure of how to take the compliment or what the compliment even was.

“Oh, and I loved your balls, by the way,” Ashton now addressed the higher level student who’d performed verbal CPR on the first one. “I wasn’t aware ninjas had them.”
