Description

Arthur is a Romeo agent for British Intelligence, a gentleman spy. His ex-lover, Harun, a former assassin for the terror cell Al-Qaum, is now a foreign diplomat.

They haven’t seen each other in over twenty years, ever since they stopped an assassination attempt during a Millennium celebration in London. No one has been able to get close to Al-Qaum during that time, either, until now when they resurface with a new assassination plot set for this Christmas Eve, bearing a remarkable similarity to the Millennium event.

Arthur and Harun reunite to take down their old enemy, Al-Quam, but not all is as it seems with either the new plot or their estranged relationship, and the two men find that the danger to their hearts is as real as the danger to their lives.

Step into a world of career spies, shadowy allies, secret orders, and killer holiday jingles.

Present day

Istanbul, Türkiye

Arthur was enjoying a peaceful Tuesday morning, sipping chai from a tulip-shaped glass cup and reading the BirGün newspaper, as he sat on a terrace that overlooked the Bosphorus.

The sun was out, and the air felt surprisingly mild, considering it was December.

Arthur made sure to check the weather forecast daily for England and smugly noted that this week was cold and drizzly back in London.

He smiled to himself as he turned a page of his paper. Arthur preferred the paper to devices and the internet; a paper was more peaceful. He’d turned forty-nine earlier this year and found himself wanting to slow down more to enjoy the simple things.

Arthur picked up his cup to take a sip of chai.

A perfect morning.

Coşkun, the butler, emerged from the house, walking briskly down the neatly swept stone paving. He held the house’s cordless phone in one hand, carried at chest level which meant someone was on the line.

Arthur set his paper aside. “Coşkun,” he greeted. “Is Demir late again?”

Demir owned the house. His family was well connected in Istanbul. Arthur was an occasional house guest.

“Pardon, sir,” Coşkun said in English. “It is a woman for you.”

“Oh?” Arthur said with mild surprise. He hadn’t been expecting any calls. He extended his hand to reach for the phone.

“She said her name is Shepherd,” Coşkun added, handing over the phone.

Arthur tried to contain his wince. The boss had tracked him down once again.

“Thank you, Coşkun,” he said, as the young butler inclined his head politely, then left.

Arthur glanced at the phone, noting the Mute button was activated. This gave him a moment to inhale and bolster himself

He pressed to un-mute and put the phone to his ear.

“Hello. Arthur speaking,” he said cheerily.

“Arthur,” Valerie replied tartly. “I’ve been on hold for the last six minutes.”

No matter how long it had been between calls, the mere sound of her voice was enough to make Arthur tense.

“My deepest apologies, ma’am,” he said, laying on the charm. “It’s a rather large house here. The young man answering the phone sprinted straight to me, I assure you.”

Stony silence was his answer.

Shepherd, aka Valerie Jones from MI6, was only a couple of years younger than Arthur. They’d worked together early on in their careers, and once upon a time his charms had worked better to smooth things over.

“I trust everything is all right?” Arthur asked. A call out of the blue from the Deputy Director of British Intelligence was never a good thing.

“I still have a few weeks left on this little sightseeing trip,” Arthur hastened to add.

Sightseeing was their code word for counter-espionage. Officially, Arthur was the British cultural attaché in Istanbul. Unofficially, he also did some spying for MI6.

Valerie drew in a breath to speak, paused, then spoke with a gentleness he rarely heard from her.

“This is regarding home turf,” she explained. “Something just cropped up, and I want you here to take a look at it in person.”

“Oh, I see,” Arthur said. “Anything in particular?”

“Firefly,” she said.

Now it was Arthur’s turn to pause.

This was unexpected.

“It’s not…?” he asked, unable to say his name out loud.

Harun.

“No,” she confirmed. “It’s a new one. And I need you to bring in the original one to help us gather Intel.”

Arthur was afraid she’d say that.

“I’m not all that positive he’ll want to play ball, ma’am.”

“It’s not a request, Arthur,” Valerie said. “If you don’t want to break the news personally, I’ll send someone else to fetch him.”

“No, no,” Arthur replied. “It’ll be better coming from me, ma’am. I’ll go.”

“Good,” she said. “I’ve taken the liberty of booking you on the ten o’clock flight to Berlin. My agent will meet you there on the ground and bring you up to speed.”

Arthur would’ve preferred to do this without a babysitter, but he could always shake them off later.

“Thank you, ma’am,” he said politely. “I shall leave right away.”

“See that you do,” she said. “Oh, and Arthur? Try not to balls it up this time.”

She ended the call before Arthur could gather himself enough to form a comeback.

“I’ll try not to,” he said to himself.

Book Spotlight/Giveaway: Can't Hurry Christmas

Can’t Hurry Christmas
Melissa Baldwin
Publication date: November 13th 2025
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Holiday, Romance

The holiday spirit is the last thing on my mind, and he’s focused on his new beginning. But one mistletoe moment might change everything.

Callie
Spending the holidays alone for the first time in four years wasn’t exactly on my wish list. But with a major shake-up at work and more changes than I ever saw coming, embracing my new reality seems like the only option.

And then there’s Travis—charming, handsome, and a Texas drawl that could make any woman weak in the knees. But is it too soon to start something new? I’ve been out of the dating game for a while, and maybe this season is meant for family, friends, and finding joy in my new season.

One thing’s for sure—I’m in no hurry for Christmas to arrive.

Travis
Christmas in the Northeast? In the freezing cold? Yeah, not exactly my idea of home. But turning down this job offer wasn’t an option—it’s the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around every day.

Still, spending the holidays away from everything and everyone I love is tougher than I expected. And then there’s Callie. I never planned to meet someone like her, let alone work so closely with her.

Now I’m left wondering… is taking this risk worth everything I’ve worked for?

Have you read the award-winning UnLucky Christmas? Don’t miss the chance to catch up with your favorite characters in Can’t Hurry Christmas from USA Today Bestselling Author Melissa Baldwin.

EXCERPT:

“Callie, I know this isn’t a typical holiday season for you. I can’t imagine how you are feeling now that…things are different without …”

“You can say his name, Hannah.”

“Joey,” she says softly. “I’m sorry. I know this is a difficult time.”

I shake my head. “Don’t be sorry. I asked him to set a wedding date, and he said he wasn’t ready and didn’t know when he would be. That pretty much told me everything I needed to know. Our goals were not exactly as aligned as I thought they were.”

She places a hand on my shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze. “I’m really proud of you.”

“Proud? For getting dumped?”

“No. For not settling,” she explains. “And for letting me drag you into crazy holiday chaos instead of spending the night alone, binge-watching TV shows you’ve seen a hundred times.”

I laugh under my breath. “You’re not wrong. This is good for me—I always do better when I’m busy.”

“You might even enjoy yourself at the festive family night,” she says, tying another bow in less than two seconds.

“Oh, I’m sure it’ll be a blast,” I say flatly. “Hundreds of children, awkward small talk, and tacky decor. I’m all in.”

She giggles. “By the way, Anna’s new friend is coming with us. Her name’s Mia. She’s such a sweetheart.”

“Cool,” I say, biting my lip as I attempt another bow.

“And her dad’s meeting us there.”

I glance up. “Okay?”

“He’s a very nice guy…”

I narrow my eyes at her. “That’s great. Is there a reason you’re telling me this?”

She conveniently avoids making eye contact with me.

“Hannah…”

“Yes?”

“What are you up to?”

“I’m not up to anything,” she says, innocently. “I just thought it might be nice for you to meet a new friend.”

I stare at her. I should’ve known she was up to something. She was very insistent that I go to the festive family night.

She shrugs. “Anyway, he’s single. And nice. He has a good job. And he’s very—”

“Stop right there,” I interrupt. “No setups. You promised.”

“I didn’t set you up,” she says. “I merely mentioned that a single, employed man who also happens to be a devoted father will be in the same vicinity as you.”

“Oh, well in that case,” I say, rolling my eyes again.

She smirks and reaches over to take the mangled ribbon from my hands. “Here, let me help. You’re not exactly grasping the bow tying process here.”

“I didn’t get Mom’s crafty gene like you,” I mutter.

She laughs. “No. But you certainly inherited the moody gene from her.”

“I’m not the only one,” I tell her.

She holds up a perfectly wrapped box, complete with an elaborate gold bow. “See? We make a good team.”

“Always,” I say. “You do the work, and I’m here for moral support.”

Discover How to Date a Prince by Hayden Stone and Giveaway

How to Date a Prince
Hayden Stone
Publication date: July 15th 2025
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance

What happens when the British Crown Prince falls in love with an American man who opposes the monarchy?

Prince Auggie swears he’s no kind of dashing prince: daydreamer, private—and also secretly very gay. He’s instantly horrified when his father, reality TV addict King James, signs Auggie up for a reality TV show to promote the monarchy, where the man with the most talents wins—and to help find Auggie a bride, the very last thing Auggie wants. But duty calls.

When Auggie finds out his co-star is irritatingly gorgeous Thomas Golden, the charismatic dual American-English heir to the Golden hotel fortune, it’s another step too far. There’s at least one problem: Prince Auggie’s already recently crossed paths with Thomas Golden one disastrous night in a London club. Plus, there’s that whole second not-so-small, not-so-secret problem—the Golden family wants to get rid of the monarchy.

Once Auggie and Thomas arrive on set in the English countryside, it’s already unapologetically hate at first sight. It’s going to be a very long summer of filming…until sparks fly behind the scenes, leading them to make a searing heatwave all their own. But soon, real reality strikes, and Auggie must choose between the life he’s destined for as the future king—or dare risk everything for love.

An enemies-to-lovers, opposites-attract, feel-good gay royal rom-com.

For fans of Red, White & Royal Blue, Boyfriend Material, and The Unlikely Heir.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

In my next life, I’ll be reborn as Harry Styles. Or maybe as the reincarnation of Taylor Swift. I’ll still be famous if I must, but I’ll be famous due to my talent instead of my chance birth as a royal. I’m quite sure I’m a negative ten on the talent-o-meter.

Everything else is just genetics. And training.

It’s Friday night in London, and Mayfair glitters. When I step out of the black SUV, straightening to my full height, I pause in the drizzle for the cameras on the red carpet at the charity ball. Snapping shutters echo, and a familiar blinding flash dazzles my eyes.

I give my best public smile and stop in a flattering pose, then strike another pose for my best angles like the Danish prince once taught me during a secret fling. Work it, babe, Prince Theodor coached me then as we drank spicy margaritas, which incidentally led to more spice.

More confidence, more sultry. Hand on my hip and a three-quarter turn to the cameras.

The crowd cheers their approval as I’m blinded by the lights. I wave, smile broadly, and carry on, mindful of not tripping over my own feet.

“Prince Auggie! Over here!”

“Prince Auggie—where’s Katie? I’ll be your date!”

“Prince Auggie, come back!”

Tonight, I’m shamelessly selling the image of charming Prince Auggie, future British monarch. I’d like to meet him too, to be honest, because he’s great in the press. Cool guy. From the outside, he has it together. The media and public are fascinated, so somehow, I must be doing something right. Or quite possibly, I’m doing something wrong enough that the media sticks to me waiting for my next mistake.

I’m all kitted up in an edgy mohair tux that an up-and-coming London designer sent over to me. I’m at least looking the part of the dashing prince, even if I can’t get over the idea that the dashing prince is supposed to be me.

To be fair, I do look good enough, taking after my mum—see genetics above—though I wish I loved crowds like she had. The looks balance out the panic, my friend Gav told me. He said it’s heaps of fun not knowing what I might blurt out next. For him, maybe. Meanwhile, I try to keep my mouth shut as a preventative measure in case something messy accidentally spills out.

“Prince Auggie, is it true you’re still single?”

“Prince Auggie, would you take a photo with me? It’s my birthday!”

I pause and go to the young woman at the barrier for a photo taken by her friend. The paparazzi goes wild. We both grin, and for a moment, I pretend I’m carefree. “Happy birthday,” I say, on my best behavior as she gives a small curtsy. “How do you do.”

She blushes, too tongue-tied to speak.

My father, the King, told me not to be too extra tonight, as if he can sniff out rising rebellion like the dawn breaks each day. I’m kind of horrified that he knows what being extra means. And that he’s applied being extra to me, specifically. Nothing good can come of that. Especially when I’ve been on my best behavior the last few months.

Which is why I asked the stylist at the earlier magazine shoot I’m coming from to give me a smoky-eye look for evening, after we bonded over our favorite makeup. She tousled my medium-length, light reddish-brown—blond if you’re generous during the summer—hair with product. Plus, a touch of contouring never hurt anyone. Use those cheekbones for the good of the kingdom, she told me, because it’s your royal duty to the people.

New Book Spotlight/Giveaway: Fiona's Fury

Talking with Roxy Blue about Fiona's Fury

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main character(s) and what can we expect when we pick it up?

Fiona’s Fury centers around a high-strung divorcee who’s never really processed her own family trauma, her ex-husband who goes from trusted friend to total control freak, and her favorite floral supplier who turns out to be much more than your average flower farmer.

The only thing you can really expect is the unexpected. Fiona’s Fury goes from falsely hunky-dory to weird to bad to worse…before things get better, but there’s plenty of spice to carry you through the hardships.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

Absolutely I begin with a basic notion of my main characters and then freestyle the entire story around them. I generally know almost nothing about how the plot is going to unfold when I begin writing a book.

Which of your characters would you want to share a campfire with, and why?

Definitely Bo! But then, what flesh-and-blood woman wouldn’t pick him? The truth is, Fiona would make a very interesting, but energetically taxing, friend. Bo is the salt of the earth. He’s laid back and bro-ish, yet insightful and deep.

Anyone, male or female, would share a campfire with him. Not to mention…he’d probably prepare something really nice to grill!

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy to read in your spare time?

Currently I’m reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for the first time. If you look up reviews, you’ll find there are about 101 reasons to read it. I’m thoroughly enjoying it because I always like something that balances travel, or casual living, with philosophy. Think Jack Kerouac. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is also on my TBR list. Oddly, I haven’t read a lot of novels by the same authors because I always want to further explore who’s out there. But I can name a few romance authors whose catalogs I’d dig way into, based upon reading even one or two books by them: L.J Shen, Philippa Gregory, Helen Huang, Abby Jimenez, Emily Henry, and yes…Colleen Hoover, although It Ends with Us is not the one that roped me in.

Are there any specific themes or messages that you strive to convey through your  writing? What impact do you hope your books have on readers?

The general message I probably want to convey is one of integrity. I’m not dead-set on my main characters always being great people, but I expose their flaws to the reader in ways that make it apparent I’m not supporting all their actions and decisions. I like for characters to be real. And most real people are complex in both good and bad ways. I mostly intend for my books to impact people through character resonance. With a heavier focus on character development than intricate plot points, I expect a lot of readers to strongly relate to the people in my books. Over time I could write hundreds of in-depth characters in a way that there will be something for everyone. I also like to impart concepts that are ethical, introspective, thought-provoking, or outright philosophical.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an author, and how have you
overcome them?

The biggest challenge for me is that I don’t have a college degree. I was raised by an old-fashioned English stickler, and come from a family of talented (though not published) writers. The knack and desire for writing has been flowing through my veins since I can remember, but it’s difficult to get attention in any industry without credentials.

Self-publishing has made it possible for many brilliant writers to get their works on the shelves without a lot of red tape, and I’m simply following suit.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

I write characters just like I’d do Method Acting. I channel the character to write realistic and nuanced dialogue, and even to determine what will happen next in their life…what they’d do in that exact situation, in accordance with their history and deepest personality traits.

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

Fiona’s Fury is one of the rare novels that is perhaps equal in plot and character development. Since I’m most into characters and the inner workings of their minds, a general theme of my writing is the deep sense of who people are and why they’re that way. I’d recommend my books to anyone who wants to read about the very real types of people that could be living next door. I hope to hit home in describing emotional nuances many people have experienced.

Can you talk about the marketing and promotion strategies you employ to reach and connect with your target audience? How do you utilize social media and other channels to build your author brand?

I wisely hired Rick Lite (Stress Free Book Marketing) to help me with the details of becoming a debut author. He’s the one who got Fiona’s Fury under the noses of the editorial reviewers who have been dropping 5 stars all over my Goodreads. This entire process would have been much more overwhelming without help. Although there’s still so much to do with reaching out to bookstores, arranging signings, writing letters to influencers and radio stations, making plans to do the audiobook, etc.

Instagram is the only social media platform I’ve committed to, as I’m not much of a social media junky, but I might get going with some youtube readings at some point.

How do you handle feedback and criticism from readers and reviewers?

Honestly, I just wouldn’t go out of my way to put my books in the hands of readers who I don’t really think would like them. Fiona’s Fury is by and large universally loved. The other two books of this series are a somewhat literary type of contemporary romance, not romcom suspense, and have been dubbed upmarket romance. So the audience for them will be a little more limited and specific. Criticism doesn’t bother me because not all my books will be for everyone. And of course there are always going to be people who get hung up on something that rubs them the wrong way, and then leave a hateful review.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you’re currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

Absolutely. Currently I’m almost finished with A Letter to Elise, the third book of the Finding Love Again series, which is a little on the dark or introspective side, but is not a suspense. It also offers a triple POV, so is unusual in that regard.

After this series is published, I plan to begin writing 20th century historical romance…which I’ve rarely encountered. I probably won’t do every decade of the century, but most, and not in any particular order. Right now I’m debating whether I want to begin with the 20s or 60s. Readers can expect material that will accurately reflect the mood and culture of the period I’m working in.

EXCERPT:

When I became bored, trouble happened. The current flavor of trouble stood a little over five feet with light brown hair and dark eyes, putting him a solid inch taller than me. He wore his uniform well and glared at me as though he’d enjoy escorting me to the next life if given a reason.

The glare I understood.

Cats and dogs did not get along, and my nose informed me I dealt with a single male wolf of the lycanthrope variety. I doubted he’d ever met a clouded leopard lycanthrope in his life, resulting in the divine essence of female feline tormenting him. That I happened to reek of divine single female feline might do him in.

What I didn’t understand was why Judge McMurphy, one of the nicer men I’d dealt with in the Chicago court system, had dragged some poor cop out for my sentencing. I especially didn’t understand why the judge had requested I come along with the poor cop for a private discussion in his office along with the attorneys. Community service was community service, and that I’d only been slapped with six months of community service astonished me.

In the judge’s shoes, I would have gone for two years.

The judge made himself comfortable behind his desk, invited us all to take a seat, and promised we wouldn’t have to wait long before he could get on with why we needed to have a private chat after everything had been said and done.

I pitied my attorney, who would need therapy after dealing with me. It wasn’t that I had gone out of my way to give the man a hard time. I just accepted responsibility for my actions, confessed I’d broken into the home of a wealthy businessman to steal a toy mouse on a double-dog dare, and refused to rat out my succubus friend for being the one to dare me to do it.

When I’d broken into the home, I hadn’t known the mouse was the size of a small dog and wore a diamond-studded collar.

The attorney especially hadn’t appreciated when I’d made use of my legal rights to summon an angel to confirm I hadn’t known about the collar, had done the heist as a prank, and would not be snitching on my friend in this life nor the next, not even if the Devil came calling to drag me into some dungeon to put me through hell. I’d amused the angel, who had assured me I wouldn’t be doing any time in the dungeons unless I wanted to.

The innuendo had caught me so off guard I’d burst into laughter at the sheer thought of leaving the pool of divine single female felines.

The wise men ran the instant they realized I was on the prowl, the smart ones ran soon after, and the dumb ones pissed me off and often received a face full of claws if they didn’t get the hint I didn’t want a dumb man in my life.

Wise and smart men were few and far between.

Sneak Peek Excerpt:

The person behind the desk is a stranger.

It’s a man with long, wild reddish-brown hair, a beard that hasn’t seen a trim in probably months, and thick, assertively male eyebrows with a whole zip code of their own. He’s sprawled out, wide legged, in the receptionist’s chair, dwarfing it.

He’s also vaguely familiar, which means he’s probably the groom Hanna said she’d send my way, a guy whose bride put her foot down at the eleventh hour and demanded he spend a day getting “the works.” Lily must have left the door open when she came in, and he helped himself to a warmer place to wait, even though it’s not yet ten.

“There are plenty of chairs in the waiting area if you need a place to sit!” I call out cheerily, gesturing at the comfy armchairs on one side of the room. “That one’s mine.” I approach the desk. “Let me block some time out for you. You’re in luck because we’ve got plenty of room for walk-ins this morning. I’ve got someone who can do the hair and beard, and I can do your eyebrows if you want that, too.”

His eyes widen. “What’s wrong with the hair, beard, and eyebrows?”

Yikes. I definitely got the wrong end of that one. “I’m so sorry! I was expecting a client with a beard this morning, and I totally assumed you were him. But you’re…obviously not. You must be here for something else. Massage? Or a dip in the springs?” Ugh—it’s never good to start the day off insulting a potential client, even if he’s sitting in my chair. “There’s a ten-percent-off coupon here with your name on it, an apology for my making assumptions about who you were—”

“No.” He scowls. “I’m not here for any of that. I’m here because due to circumstances beyond my control and yours and probably even God’s, I’m your new receptionist.”

I laugh, reflexively. And then I realize I’m the only one laughing and my laughter sort of…falls off a cliff.

“Yeah,” the bearded stranger says. “It’s not even remotely funny. Although I think my grandfather would have disagreed. I’m pretty sure he’s laughing all the way to hell.”

“Your grandfather,” I repeat. I’m so lost, I couldn’t find my best self with a compass and map.

He stands and holds out a hand. And I realize he actually wasn’t manspreading. He was taking up all that space in the chair because he’s legitimately huge—at least six-two and built like a warrior god. He wears worn jeans and a T-shirt that reads, I’m a chemist. To save time, let’s assume I’m never wrong.

“Quinn Hott,” he says. “Hanna’s brother, Fox Hott’s second-youngest grandkid. And your new receptionist.”

Faking It With the Grump
by Kate O’Keeffe
(Second Chance Café, #1)
Publication date: March 14th 2023
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

He’s grumpy, boring, and thinks it’s okay to wear a suit and tie to a smalltown bar full of lumberjacks. But when I kiss him? Let’s just say I wasn’t expecting THAT.

Harper Cole

It’s one thing to be dumped by the huge Hollywood star you thought you were going to marry. It’s quite another to move back to the small town you’re both from.

As a booby prize for being shown the door by Dex Ryan, everyone is trying to set me up with their son, their nephew, or their long-lost cousin’s gardener. Either that or they’re throwing me pitying looks that say, “You’re a big loser.”

I’m not going to put up with their patronizing sympathy anymore.

So, when I spot new-guy-in-town Christopher Young, I set out to make him mine. Or you know, pretend to make him mine. I’m still in a horrible funk over Dex, and Christopher is an uptight grump. Not exactly my type.

The fact that despite appearances, he’s gorgeous and doing weird things to my blood pressure doesn’t mean a thing.

Really.

Not. A. Thing.

Christopher Young

Hunter’s Creek, population next to nothing, is the reason I work all the time. I’m solely focused on buying the town’s lumber mill so I can go back to NYC and get my big promotion. This small town is a means to an end. Nothing more.

That is until the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen superglues her lips to mine in an unexpected and very public way. She’s not the kind of woman I usually go for with her boho dress and ankle boots, but that kiss…

I’m disappointed when she comes up for air and tells me it’s all for show. But if Harper Cole wants me to be her fake boyfriend while I’m here in town, who am I to turn her down? Being attached to a local might ingratiate me to the townsfolk and make my job that much the easier.

After all, dating Harper can only be make believe. Nothing more. Not when my entire future is at stake.

Faking It With The Grump is a grumpy-sunshine, opposites attract, fake relationship romance set in the small town of Hunter’s Creek, Washington. It’s the first book in the new Second Chance Café series. Each book follows a different sister’s love story and can be read as a standalone novel or as part of a series.

Excerpt 1:

She looks suddenly nervous. “Okay, here’s the thing. I kind of told some people today that you and I are…well, that we’re…”

When she doesn’t complete her sentence, I lean in and ask, “You and I are what?”

She glances around nervously before she says, “Dating.”

I straighten, shocked.

As my brain tries to comprehend what she just said, I blink at her a few times.

I need clarification. In my experience, beautiful women don’t usually go around telling people they’re dating you without your knowledge.

Well, not sane, beautiful women, anyway.

“Did you say you’ve told people you and I are dating?” I ask.

She nibbles on her lip, reminding me of a rabbit. It only adds to her appeal. Despite my concern, she’s confirmed she’s not exactly sane. “I did warn you it was weird.”

“That’s true, you did. But that doesn’t explain why, exactly.”

She clasps her hands together, clearly uncomfortable.

I’m overcome with the strangest sensation, wanting to reach out and place my hand over hers to reassure her it’s okay.

I don’t.

She takes a breath. “I know this makes me sound crazy. And I’m not crazy. Really, I’m not.”

Said no crazy person ever.

“I don’t know if you recognize me or know what happened, but even if you don’t, I really, really need you to pretend to date me because—”

Wait. Pretend?

Her eyes dart to something behind me, and before I fully realize what’s happening, she’s pushed the bar stool to one side, closed the distance between us, a decidedly wild look in her eyes.

“Everything all right?” I ask her tentatively.

“Okay if I kiss you?” she murmurs out of the corner of her mouth.

I blink at her. “Now you want to…kiss me?”

She nods, her eyes darting behind me and then back to my face. “That okay with you?”

This gorgeous woman who smells like a meadow, the double threat, the woman who only just told me she wants to pretend to date me, now wants to kiss me.

As confusing as this situation may be, I’d be an idiot not to leap at this.

“Sure,” I tell her, the thought of having her soft lips pressed against mine making my belly clench.

It would appear she’s not a woman to be told twice.

Immediately, she pulls herself up onto her toes, places her hands at the back of my head, and before I can utter another word—like “why?”—she leans in toward me and kisses me.

I don’t move for fear this is some kind of mirage. Not that I think mirages are all that common in Washington, what with it not being a desert. But seriously, this sort of thing doesn’t happen to me a whole lot. Or, you know, ever.

And I’ll be honest, as far as kisses go, it’s easily the most surprising of my life, hands down. One second, she’s explaining to me why she wants me to fake date her, and the next she’s kissing me, like it’s no big deal at all.

The problem is, for me to kiss someone like Harper Cole, it should be a big deal.

Guest Author Day with Joe Cosentino

Interview with Joe Cosentino, author of Drama Prince,

the 15th Nicky and Noah mystery/comedy/romance novel

Joe Cosentino, thank you for speaking about your writing process at the release of the fifteenth novel in your award-winning and popular Nicky and Noah gay cozy comedy mystery series.

Thank you. I’m feeling cozy and mysterious.

You’ve written thirty novels!

And my mother wishes I had a “real” job. I wonder if Steven King’s mother wishes that.

How did you become a storyteller?

My mother says I tell tall tales—and she’s right! I’ve always had a wild imagination. My parents always feared what I’d make up and tell neighbors about them. And they still do! I appropriately majored in theatre at college. Then I went on to act opposite stars like Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T industrial), Nathan Lane (Roar of the Greasepaint musical onstage), Bruce Willis (A Midsummer Night’s Dream onstage), Charles Keating (NBC’s Another World), Jason Robards (Commercial Credit computer commercial), and Holland Taylor (ABC’s My Mother Was Never a Kid TV movie). Finally, I began writing plays and ultimately writing novels. Since I’m a cozy mystery reading fanatic, and there are so few gay cozy mystery series out there, I was happy to fill the bill—or in this new novel, the nightshirt.

You’re also a college professor/department head. How do you find the time to do all this writing?

I don’t get a lot of sleep.

Where do you write?

My home study is very much like Martin Anderson’s office at Treemeadow College including a fireplace with a cherry wood mantel and a cherry wood desk and bookcase. I also have a window seat beneath a large window/gateway to the woods.

Do you write an outline before each book?

For a mystery, an outline is imperative. It’s important to plot out all the clues and surprise reveals. I generally think of a great idea for a new book at 3 a.m. If I can remember it the next day, or read my notes on my night table, I draft the outline. Since I was an actor, I also write a character biography for each character. Then I close my eyes and let the magic happen. As I see the scenes in front of me like a movie and the characters start talking to each other in my head, I hit the computer. My spouse reads my second draft. After we argue, I write my third draft.

What advice do you have for unpublished writers?

Don’t listen to naysayers. Find the magic within yourself. Get in front of the computer and start writing your unique story. Don’t copy anyone. Write what you know and feel passionate about. Write every day. Don’t be afraid to take chances. When you have a story you think is perfect, ask someone you trust to read it. Then after doing another draft, email it to a publisher who has an open submissions policy and who publishes the kind of story you’ve written, or publish it yourself.

Is it hard to write comedy?

Not for me. I’ve always thought funny. As an actor, I remember directors telling me to stop making my scenes so funny. I didn’t realize I was doing it. I think I get this from my mother. For example, for Christmas one year my mother gave me a jacket and my sister a house. When I complained, she said, “But it’s a nice jacket.” Thanks, Mom!

Why do you write gay fiction?

Why not? LGBT people have many interesting untold stories. Go to a mall and look at the row of movie posters without any LGBT characters in them. Visit a bookstore and see cover after cover of opposite sex love stories. Take a look at so many of our Republican political and so-called religious leaders who raise money and gain power by demonizing LGBT people and trying (and often succeeding) to take away civil rights. I mourn for the young gay kids who consider suicide. So I support organizations like GLSEN (giving them a portion of my book royalties), and I write stories that include LGBT people and themes. However, just as my Jana Lane series with its gay supporting characters has huge crossover appeal for gay people, the Nicky and Noah series with its LGBT leading characters and straight supporting characters has a tremendous amount of crossover appeal for straight people. Most people like a clever mystery, a sweet romance, and a good laugh, regardless of the sexuality of the characters.

In your various series, how do you remember all the elements about the characters and settings over a long time period?

I keep good notes on everything for continuity. Also, the regular characters are like family to me. I know them so well. I love watching them and their relationships grow and develop. It’s equally fun creating new characters in each book. I laugh out loud when writing my novels, and the endings still surprise me—even though I wrote them!

You’re a college theatre professor/department chair like Martin Anderson in your Nicky and Noah mysteries series. Has that influenced that series?

As a past professional actor and current college theatre professor/department chair, I know first-hand the wild and wacky antics, sweet romance, and captivating mystery in the worlds of theatre and academia. The Nicky and Noah mysteries are full of them! I never seem to run out of wild characters to write about. My faculty colleagues and students kid me that if any of them tick me off, I’ll kill them in my next book.

Are you Martin Anderson, the theatre department head, in the novels?

My colleagues say my sense of humor is Nicky’s but I look like Martin Anderson. I love how Martin is so loyal and supportive of Nicky and Noah. His one up-man-ship with his office assistant Shayla is a riot. I’ll admit that like me Martin is a bit of a gossip. His spouse, Ruben, is based on mine. It’s great when Ruben keeps Martin’s theatricality in line with hysterical barbs. The older couple stay sharp by engaging in their verbal warfare, but it’s all done in deep admiration and respect. Finally, it’s wonderful to see an elderly couple so much in love (uncommon in the entertainment field), and how they can read each other like a book—no pun intended.

Are college theatre professors/amateur sleuths/adorable couple Nicky and Noah based on any of your younger colleagues?

Like most of the characters in my books, Nicky is a combination of a few people I’ve known. He’s handsome, muscular, smart, charming, and he has an enormous manhood, which doesn’t hurt (or maybe it does). However, what I admire most about Nicky is his never give up attitude and sense of humor in the face of adversity. He is genuinely concerned for others, and he’ll do anything to solve a murder mystery. Finally, he is a one-man man, and Nicky is proud to admit that man is Noah Oliver. Nicky is also incredibly devoted to his family and friends. Noah is blond, blue-eyed, lean, handsome, smart, and devoted. He makes the perfect Watson to Nicky’s Holmes. (I always thought Holmes and Watson were a gay couple.) Noah also has a large heart and soft spot (no pun intended) for others. Finally, like Nicky, Noah is quite gifted at improvisation, and creates wild and wonderful characters for their role plays to catch the murderer.

Since both you and Nicky are of Italian-American decent, are Nicky’s parents like yours? Are Noah’s parents like your spouse’s parents?

Both Nicky’s parents and Noah’s parents have many of the traits of my parents. They’re absolutely hilarious. I love Noah’s mother’s fixation with taking pictures of everything, and his father’s fascination with seeing movies. I also love how Noah’s father is an amateur sleuth like Nicky. As they say, men marry their fathers. Nicky’s mother’s obsession with Bingo at her church is a riot. Both sets of parents fully embrace their sons and their sons’ family, which is refreshing.

For anyone unfortunate enough not to have read them, tell us the titles of the Nicky and Noah mysteries.

Drama Queen, Drama Muscle, Drama Cruise, Drama Luau, Drama Detective, Drama Fraternity, Drama Castle, Drama Dance, Drama Faerie, Drama Runway, Drama Christmas, Drama Pan, Drama TV, Drama Oz, and now Drama Prince.

Why Drama Prince as the fifteenth novel?

After I wrote my Tales from Fairyland Anthology, I realized there was more territory to cover with gay fairytales (pun intended). Since I’m a Cinderella fanatic, I decided to use that classic story.

Why is the novel set in San Francisco?

Where better to have a gay fairytale theme park theatre? Also, San Francisco is a magical place. We get to visit some of my favorite locations in this book like the Castro Theatre, Pink Triangle Memorial Park, and Faerie Hollow.

Tell us a bit about the plot—no spoilers.

Nicky, Noah, and Treemeadow College theatre crew venture to a gay fairytale theme park in San Francisco, where they stage an original musical adaptation of Cinderella entitled, Let’s Ball. Once again, our favorite thespians use their drama skills to catch the killer before an explosive pumpkin threatens to make the show a bomb.

It's great to see our favorite characters back.

Nicky, in addition to being the director, plays King Charming, the king with a long scepter. Noah plays Nicky’s Queen—onstage and off. Their best friends, Martin and Ruben, are along for the wild ride as the Stepmother/Fairy Godmother and the Duke (who wants to grab his brother the King by the crown) respectively—but not respectfully. The two couples’ sons, Taavi and Ty, are cast as Gro and Tesque, the stepbrothers demanding full service from Cinder.

Who are the new characters/suspects/victims for book fifteen?

Things heat up pretty quickly between the actors playing Cinder and Prince Charming as well as the young men cast as the Footman and the Coachman. However, they may get a royal screw as four local detectives drop around them like a priest’s robe at conventions.

How can your readers get their hands on Drama Prince and how can they contact you?

The purchase links are below, as are my contact links, including my web site. I love to hear from readers! So do Nicky and Noah. I tell them everything!

Thank you, Joe, for interviewing today.

It was my pleasure. As a past professional actor and current college theatre professor/department chair, I know first-hand the hysterically funny antics, sweet romance, and captivating mystery in the worlds of theatre and academia. The Nicky and Noah mysteries are full of them! I know you’ll laugh, cry, feel romantic, and love delving into this crackling new mystery with more plot twists and turns (as Nicky would say) than the Proud Boys planning a takeover of the Capitol. I’m more excited than (as Nicky would say) a conservative politician taking away LGBT rights to share this fifteenth novel in the series with you. So wave your Fairy Godmother’s wand, ride coach, and head to the palace for a ball with a charming prince who has a slipper fetish! I promise you a happy ending!

And I love to hear from readers. So drop me a line. I’ll share it with Nicky and Noah! http://www.JoeCosentino.weebly.com

Excerpt of Drama Prince, the 15th Nicky and Noah mystery novel, by Joe Cosentino

I made my way to Nate Friedman’s dressing room doorway, where I feigned needing to zip my fly.

The twenty-four-year-old playing our Mouse/Footman sat in the makeup chair facing away from the mirror. Opposite him on the easy chair, was Tej Vevi, our Mouse/Coachman. Though both men were similar in age and wore identical mouse costumes, they couldn’t have looked more different. Nate was tall and thin with frizzy auburn hair and a prominent nose. Tej’s Arab ancestry had awarded him a muscular statuesque body with long thick black hair and onyx eyes.

Tej took Nate’s hand. “I had a really good time last night.”

“So did I.” Nate squeezed Tej’s hand, causing the freckles on Nate’s hand to dance like eye floaters.

“The restaurant in Laurel Heights was great.” Tej added, “So was Laurel Heights.”

“That’s my home.”

“Thank you for sharing it with me.”

Nate grinned. “And thank you for showing me the Midtown Terrace area last week.”

“My pleasure. It’s the only place I’ve ever lived.” Tej rubbed his wide nose. “My folks are active in the Arab Community Center there.”

“That’s great. My parents are…were involved with the Jewish Community Center in Laurel Heights.”

Tej asked, “Are your parents okay with you being an actor?”

Nate giggled. “They sit front row center for every show I do.”

Hey, that’s my seat for this show! Oh, yeah, I’ll be onstage.

Nate asked, “How about your folks? Are they comfortable with you being a performer?”

“As comfortable as a Democrat at a White Nationalists meeting.”

Leave the witty metaphors to me please!

Tej explained, “My mom and dad see my shows, but they’d rather I work at the family business.”

“What’s that?”

“Importing and exporting clothing and jewelry.”

“And you’re not into that?”

“The only clothing and jewelry I’m interested in are costumes and accessories for the stage.”

“Says the guy wearing a mouse costume.”

“To the other guy wearing a mouse costume.”

They shared a laugh.

Nate said, “Since my father is a cantor at our temple, music, dance, and theatre were always a big part of my life growing up. My mom wanted to be an actress, but she got sidetracked by having kids. She’s a terrific history teacher, because she uses her performing skills in the classroom. Her students love it when Mom dresses up to play famous people in history, and when she has them improvise scenes from our country’s past.”

“Your folks sound great.”

“Thanks. So do yours.”

Tej nodded. “They’ve worked hard all their lives to never deny my sister and me anything.”

“Same with mine for my brother and me.”

“I guess we’re lucky.”

Nate nodded. “How do your parents feel about your interest in Buddhism?”

Tej shrugged his ample shoulders. “We don’t really talk about it much.”

“Do you mind talking about it with me?”

“Not at all. What would you like to know?”

Nate slid to the edge of his seat. “Do you believe we store up good points here for the afterlife?”

“Jewish people don’t believe that?”

Nate tented his fingers. “We believe doing good works come back to us with good things in this life.”

“I believe that too, but I also think our current good deeds create karma for our next life. What we’ve learned here puts us at a higher level of existence the next time around, so we don’t need to learn it all over again.”

Nate cocked his head. “You believe in reincarnation?”

“I have to believe this life isn’t all there is. We’re made of energy. How can that energy just disappear when we die?”

“What about animals?”

“They’re lower forms of life still needing to learn a great deal. So they reincarnate too.”

“How about trees?”

Tej rubbed his hands together. “Think about the leaves. They start out small, but they grow to become green and luscious. When they are starved of sunlight, leaves turn beautiful colors, finally falling to the ground.”

“Where they turn brown and die.”

“But they come back the next spring even stronger and more beautiful than the year before. Then it happens all over again.”

Nate smirked. “Okay, but how come everybody in a past life is a king or a queen?”

No pun intended.

“Why aren’t they a peasant?” Nate asked.

“I can’t answer that, since I don’t remember my past lives.” Tej sat back in the chair. “But so many times I’ll do something, say something, or go somewhere and think, I’ve done this, said that, or been there before.”

“Maybe it was in a dream.”

“I think it’s more than that. Like Cinder tells the prince in our show, we’re all connected. I can feel it in my bones. There’s more to my life and yours than…this life.”

“Then why can’t we remember our past lives?”

“Maybe we aren’t trying hard enough, or perhaps we’ve lost the ability to remember.” Tej sighed. “If I had the money, I’d go to a therapist who helps you recall your past lives.”

“Couldn’t those therapists simply be using the power of suggestion?”

Tej grinned. “Speaking about the power of suggestion.” He placed a hand on Nate’s knee. “I’d like to suggest we do something right now.”

Nate returned the grin. “Oh, really? What’s that?”

“Hm. I don’t know. How about this?” Tej leaned over and planted a tender kiss on Nate’s lips.

“I think I like that suggestion.”

“I know I like it.”

Nate giggled. “Since turnabout is fair play, I guess I should offer a suggestion of my own.”

“And what suggestion would that be?”

“How’s this one?” Nate kissed Tej, longer and deeper.

Tej rose and lifted Nate into his arms like a Proud Boy with a Confederate flag. He kissed Nate again and again. When they parted, Tej said, “This is getting serious for me. I want to see you tonight, and the next night, and the next.”

Before Tej could kiss him again, Nate blurted out, “I’m a Reformed Jew.”

“That’s great.”

“Why?”

“Since unlike the Hasidic, you believe in full rights for LGBT people, including marriage and adoption.” A crease formed between Tej’s bushy eyebrows. “I wish I could say the same about my family’s religion. I guess that’s one of the reasons I turned to Buddhism.”

“But aren’t your parents fine with you being gay?”

Tej nodded and hair covered his eyes. “Like I said, they don’t tell me what to do. It’s my life, and I have to be true to my nature. They understand that. But I can sense they wish things were different.”

“There’s no point in wishing things were different. They are what they are.” Nate frowned. “You and I are proof of that.”

“What do you mean?”

Nate faced him. “Tej, you’re a terrific guy. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you during the last month of rehearsals. Our dates have been great. And I hope you’ll always be a part of my life.”

“Why do I sense a ‘but’ coming?”

“Tej, my parents…I…always thought…when the time comes, I wouldn’t get seriously involved with anyone who…wasn’t like me.”

Tiny beads of sweat formed on Tej’s forehead. “But I am like you. We’re both actors, around the same age, gay. We have the same liberal political beliefs. We like the same music, theatre, art. I loved your neighborhood and you loved mine. Okay, you don’t believe in reincarnation and the afterlife. I do. So we’ll be together in this life. That’s totally fine with me.”

Nate ran a shaky hand through his hair. “You don’t understand.”

“No, I don’t.”

A tear brimmed Nate’s eye. “Tej, from the beginning of recorded time, the Jewish people were imprisoned, enslaved, and marked for extinction. But they never gave up. They kept fighting for survival. To remain a tribe, a people, a culture. A Jewish culture.”

Tej gasped as if being hit by a sucker punch. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”

“I’m sorry, Tej. I like you so much. And I think I could love you, possibly spend the rest of my life with you. But I’ve always thought…assumed I’d share my life with someone—”

“Jewish?”

Nate nodded.

“So because Jews and Arabs have been at war for centuries, we have to fight each other?”

“No, Tej.” Nate took his hands. “We can be friends, even continue dating.”

“But when it comes time for a serious relationship and marriage, I’m out, because I’m not Jewish?”

Nate nodded. “I’m sorry.”

Tej released his hands. “I’m sorry too. For you. And for me. Because your bigotry is standing in the way of your happiness—and mine.” Tej stormed out of the dressing room.

“Tej!”
