Book Spotlight & Giveaway~ The Applicant

Check out Aidee Ladner's The Applicant and don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post for a chance to win a $50 gift card from the author.

GENRE: M/M, SciFi, Time Travel Romance

How can something so cuddly and adorable be so destructive? The teddy bear robot decimating his lab is only the first disaster of the day for roboticist Forbes Pohle. If he can figure out how to end its rampage, he still has to interview applicants for the position of research assistant and convince the time-traveler on his doorstop that they should be making their future right now.

Oliver Lennox didn’t travel back in time to have a quickie in the blast chamber—but it certainly is fun. This younger Forbes is a sweeter, more innocent version of his lover. And it will be hard to leave him behind in the past.

If you like sexy nerds, humor, plenty of action, and a love story not even time can disrupt, this romantic adventure has the perfect credentials for the job.

Excerpt:

A wiry man stood on Forbes’s doorstep. He was dressed in a T-shirt, tight black jeans, black nail polish, and red Chuck Taylors. His strawberry blond hair was spiked up in front. The corners of his eyes and his freckled nose wrinkled.

Forbes blinked back his surprise and opened his mouth, expecting words to come out. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Come in.” Forbes waved him inside the house. “I’m Forbes Pohle. I’m the one who posted the job listing.”

The man grinned and held out a hand. “Very pleased to meet you, Dr. Pohle. I’m Oliver Lennox. Please call me Oliver.”

Forbes blushed at the title as he clasped Oliver’s warm hand. Forbes was a PhD three times over, but he hadn’t put that in the advertisement.

“If you’ll come this way, we can talk in the lab.” He turned and walked back down the hallway to the adjacent laboratory, assuming the applicant would follow.

“Oh, I didn’t come about…,” Forbes heard him say before he ran into Forbes’s back. To be fair it wasn’t his fault. Forbes had stopped short in the lab doorway.

During the few minutes he’d stepped out to answer the door, the laboratory had been destroyed.

Guest Author Day with Nancy Fraser

I have the pleasure of having author Nancy Fraser today on the blog talking about their latest book, Eye of the Pharaoh. Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post where the author will be giving away a $20 Amazon/BN Gift Card to one lucky person. This tour is sponsored by Goddess Fish Promotions.

Now let's chat with Nancy.....

Thanks for stopping by to talk a little about your writing! Let's jump right in.

When did you begin writing and why?

What an absolutely perfect first question! I sold my first book, a contemporary romance titled Courting Trouble, in 1996. As a matter of fact, TODAY, is my twentieth anniversary as a published author. Woot! (There’s virtual celebratory cake over on my blog being served by scantily clad men!)

Why did I begin writing? Now that’s a funny story. It was on a dare. A co-worker was an avid romance reader. One day at work, she offered me one of her books for lunch break. I thanked her but said, “No, I don’t read romance.” Then, stupidly said, “Anyone can write one of those.” She dared me to try.

That weekend I wrote 2 chapters (having never read a romance novel) and delivered them to her on Monday. She accused me of copying them from a book. So, on lunch break, I wrote another half-chapter. She covertly mailed them off to Harlequin. Two months later (yes, the turnaround time was shorter then), they asked to see the entire manuscript. I finished the book and it was rejected. However, at that point, I was hooked and haven’t looked back since.

Do you have a favorite genre? Is it the same genre you prefer to write?

I love reading just about any type of romance. I’m also partial to reference books about unusual time periods/events. I often spend as much time researching as I do writing.

As for which I prefer to write, like my reading my writing is what you might call “eclectic”. I write across five different genres. I’m partial to what’s termed the “vintage” historical (post WWII up to the beginning of the twenty-first century). I’ve set a number of my books in the time period, especially my holiday-themed stories. Earlier this month I released a Halloween-themed novella, Bewitched, set in the mid-1960s. However, if a story or theme strikes me, as happened with Eye of the Pharaoh, I’m willing to dig in and create the best story I can.

Do certain themes and ideas tend to capture your writer’s imagination and fascinate you?

I’m often held hostage by my hero and heroine’s desires. I usually have a very clear idea of what I want to do but it gets muddled by one or both of them screaming at me to go in an opposite direction. Real life situations, be they romantic or not, usually spur me to action. I once met a woman who’d served as a surrogate for her older sister against her brother-in-law’s wishes. Less than five years after the baby was born, the older sister died of cancer. Now the surrogate and the brother-in-law share custody of the little boy. There was no romance involved since the father was already remarried, but I figured … what the heck … let’s turn this into a romance. Their story (twisted by me) became my 2015 award-winning contemporary, Home is Where the Hunk is.

Do you have a favorite author who introduced you to the genre?

Oh yes. Elizabeth Lowell. At one point, I owned every single one of her Silhouette/Harlequin romances. I even talked my hubby (at the time) into taking a road trip to track down two of the books I was missing from my set. Talk about a non-stalking, stalker! My absolutely favorite all time romance is Chain Lightning, by Elizabeth of course. It is the ultimate perfection in romantic fiction!

What advantages or challenges does a writer in your genre face in today’s fiction market?

Too many quality authors for not enough market. Readers (bless their hearts) are usually open minded and willing to try a new author if the author writes in a genre they enjoy. However, as with all of us, they have their favorites. In today’s tight economy, if there’s only $20 to spend and your favorite author has a new book, another author is out of luck.

The advantage is the readers (again, bless their hearts) are loyal. Once they’ve found you and been entertained by you, they’re yours for life. I have a core group of readers I fondly refer to as “Grandma Nancy’s Girls”. They’re not officially a street team, but I can count on them to share my posts, buy my books and post reviews.

Tell me a little about the characters in Eye of the Pharaoh.

As an author and a woman I am attracted to all sorts of romantic heroes. Sure, they should be drop-dead gorgeous and sexy as sin but, more importantly, they should be compassionate, witty and intelligent. And possess an imperfection or two. That was my goal in creating Dr. Joshua Cain, Professor of Archaeology and Art History. In Eye of the Pharaoh, Dr. Cain spouts ancient history with the ease of a confident educator. With the exception of the fictitious Anukehaten, guardian of the Queen-Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s tomb, and the ancient curse of the pink stone and statue, all historical references shared by Dr. Cain are accurate depictions of Egyptian culture and history.

My goal for my heroine, Teri Hunter, was to create an attractive, equally intelligent professional with some quirky habits. Teri is a walking motivational quote, often dredging up one of those commonplace office posters when she needs a bit of emotional reinforcement. She’s even taken her personal mantra from one of her favorites: Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.

She’s often heard quoting the likes of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, author/clothing designer Donna Karan, comedian Louis C.K., and even Albert Einstein. My personal favorite comes from author Mason Cooley: Romance is tempestuous. Love is calm. It’s a mantra I strive for when creating every happily-ever-after.

Where’s the story set? How much influence did the setting have on the atmosphere/characters/development of the story?

The story begins at Princeton University where Josh teaches. However, we quickly move to New Orleans (one of my favorite cities) to add some flavor to the story. I wanted to set a somewhat ominous mood, so I put them up in a rather unique B&B (instead of Teri’s preferred Marriott), and made sure Josh had his usual room overlooking the cemetery.

Once the characters “left” their own place and time, it was important to set a scene that truly spoke to 1920’s Egypt with numerous archaeological digs, tomb raiders, questionable collectors, and out-right thieves.

The setting was instrumental in showing both the main characters’ strengths and weaknesses. While Josh is commanding and in complete control of their surroundings (based on his intellectual knowledge), he’s still vulnerable when it comes to his two daughters and not knowing how this time travel is affecting them back in their own place and time.

If you had to write your memoir in five words, what would you write?

Road her broom with panache!

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?

Probably 13 hours out of 16. Even when I’m doing dishes, I’m plotting the next scene. I’m one of those who has a notebook beside my bed and on the end table next to the couch. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve written thoughts or dialogue during commercials. The only person that can distract me completely is my three-year-old grandson William…and only because if I don’t keep my eye on the ball all hell is going to break loose.

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?

Fall and winter seem to be my busiest times. I have a contemporary erotic romance titled Kilty Pleasures coming out in December. It’s part of the “Men Who Wear Kilts” series from The Wild Rose Press. Then, in January, I have another vintage Valentine-themed novella, Paging Dr. Cupid, on tap. I’m currently working on a new story, Waking Up in Oz, and it will be part of a new historical series based on situations where the hero and heroine find themselves “stranded”. It’s set in the mid-1970s and is a humorous re-working of the Wizard of Oz theme.

GENRE: Time Travel/Paranormal

Publicist Teri Hunter has her hands full promoting Professor Joshua Cain and his new non-fiction book, The Pharaoh’s Mummy. She’s not even sure it’s possible to turn this absent-minded, modern-day, Indiana Jones into a best-selling author.

Dr. Cain’s PhDs in archeology and art history have prepared him for almost anything on the lecture circuit and among ancient ruins. He’s just not sure about a book tour...or the sexy publicist sent to monitor his every professional move.

When an odd request falls in their laps while in New Orleans, Josh and Teri find themselves transported to 1920’s Egypt where they must resolve an ancient curse in order to be sent home. Will the dangers facing them hinder their success and threaten their very lives? Or will help from an other-worldly guardian keep them on-track and safe?

Excerpt:

Wake up. Kick ass. Repeat.

Teri Hunter mouthed the motivational phrase she’d chosen for her personal mantra as she stepped across the threshold into the dark and musty storeroom.

A dim light shone from a glass-enclosed workroom in the far corner. Taking a tentative step forward, she faltered when the floorboards creaked beneath her feet. Something fast and furry brushed against her ankle. A shiver ran down her back, yet she fought the urge to retreat.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

This was obviously today’s obstacle. Were it not for her professional commitments and intricately organized schedule, she’d have no doubt bolted for the door and returned to the safety and illumination of the main building.

‘Sorry, but the storage area doesn’t have overhead lighting. Preservation of the antiquities. You understand.’ The dean’s words echoed in her head. What little outside light there was had become nearly non-existent due to an impending thunderstorm.

Drawing a deep breath, she took a second step and then a third, winding her way past a half-dozen crates, some open, some not. To her left she heard a rustling of paper; to her right the distinct sound of footsteps.

Her apprehension grew, the hair on her forearms stood at attention. She’d barely made it halfway across the room before bumping into something large and solid. Reaching out, she laid her hand against the oversized object. Slowly, she raised her head and came face to face with the painted mask of an Egyptian noble. The chipped finish gave the death mask a deranged look.

“You come here often, big boy?” A nervous giggle followed her softly-worded, albeit silly, question and she pressed her fingertips to her lips to stifle an outright laugh before lowering her hand to her side.

Go big! Home is boring.

Silently she cursed her habit of dredging up poster-worthy quotes to mask her fears.

Author Bio and Links

Like most authors, Nancy Fraser began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher’s pet, which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.

Published in multiple genres, Nancy currently writes for four publishers. She has published twenty-two books in both full-length and novella format. Nancy will release her 25th book in early 2017. She is currently working on a Valentine’s Day novella, her next Rock and Roll novella, and a story about a racy Scot titled “Kilty Pleasures”.

When not writing (which is almost never), Nancy dotes on her five wonderful grandchildren and looks forward to traveling and reading when time permits. Nancy lives in Atlantic Canada where she enjoys the relaxed pace and colorful people.

Talking with author Ruth A. Casie

Thank you Dawn for hosting me on your blog today. I thought it would be easy to write a top ten post. I was drawing a blank when I got a call from my close friend, Jean. She and I started writing at about the same time and have stayed in touch. We were catching up about some social gatherings we had each attended and noted a curiosity.

When we met new people at social gatherings the question about what we did for a living was a common subject. It’s a neutral topic much like the weather. When we were both working, she in advertising and me in banking, It provoked little excitement but pleasantly passed the time. Nine times out of ten our jobs took very little explaining. You didn’t get a lot of questions.
“I teach at the high school. What do you do?” I’d be asked
“I work in finance.” I’d take another sip of my wine.
Even after I retired the routine from the bank it was the same but I had a different response.
“I teach at the high school. What do you do?” I’d be asked
“I volunteer at several community agencies.” I’d take another sip of my wine.

Notice, no mention of being a romance author. It took me some time to come to grips with that. Oh, not because I’m not proud or excited about my career. No. It was the things people would say after I told them I was an author that had made me cautious. We commiserated on that too.
With inspiration from Jean, here are the top ten things not to say to a romance author (yes the questions are real) and how I would LOVE to respond:
1.  Did you model that character after me?

A voice inside my head warns me. It blares loud and clear. I smile and say nothing while the response playing in my head in full Dolby Sound says…
“Oh, I didn’t know you could fight with a long staff, translate ancient texts or use magic. No, you’re too boring to be in my book. Besides, you look nothing like Gerard Butler.”
2.  Did you get your plot from a TV program?
I try not to widen my eyes or suck in a deep breath. “You do know that’s called theft of intellectual property?”
3.  Are you going to put what I just said in a book?
Really? Do you really want me to tell the world exactly what you think of your mother-in-law? And if I did put it in my book would you ever know? You keep asking me for a complimentary copy. You can’t pay $3.99 for the book?
4.  Who did you fashion your characters after?
I try not to look too quizzically. “You do know I write fiction, fantasy with druids and time travel and that I make all this stuff up.”
5.  Did that really happen?
See the answer to number 4.
6.  Where do you get your ideas?
Okay, this is a legitimate question. But the person asking is looking for the name of a book or website. They want a three second response. There are entire workshops on this topic.
7.  Do your children know you write this stuff?
“Yes and they all buy copies for their friends and in-laws for the holidays.”
8.  Do people actually buy your books?
“While you want a free copy, there are others, according to my royalty checks, who pay to read my stories.”
9.  This isn’t real literature, you know.

“Really? That’s how the government classifies it when I file my copyright.”
10. I could write something like this… how hard could it be?
“Yea, (hands on hips) go ahead… I dare you!”
More often than not I’m with my husband at social gatherings. When someone asks what I do, he says, “Ruth’s a romance author. Let me tell you about her new book.” I stand and listen. He gets as excited about them as I do.

Ruth A. Casie’s first career as a Vice President and product manager for a major international bank took her around the world. Romance novels were her companions on the long flights and solo dining experiences. Her imagination ran wide when she visited historic sites and ancient ruins. She loves to include little details from her travels, and her family, into her stories. In addition to writing historic fantasy time travel romance for Carina Press and Harlequin, Ruth is a participating author in the TIMELESS TALES short story series. Her book KNIGHT OF RUNES was a NJRW Golden Leaf Finalist in 2011. THE GUARDIAN’S WITCH was a RomCon Reader’s Crown Finalist in 2013. KNIGHT OF RAPTURE was a NJRW Golden Leaf finalist in 2015. Genre: Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Time Travel
Publisher: Carina Press

Except:

Motioning to his men to follow, Arik raced toward the camp. He could hear the shouts, and cursed himself for not seeing the danger. He crested the hill and came to an abrupt halt.
Logan’s sword ripped through the air as he protected Doward. The tinker drew his short blade and did as much damage as he could. But it was the woman Arik noticed. Her skirt hiked up, she twirled her walking stick like a weapon with an expertise that left him slack-jawed. She dispatched the attackers, one by one, in a deadly well-practiced dance. A man rushed toward her, knife in hand. The sneer on his face didn’t match the fear in his eyes. She stepped out of his line of attack, extended her stick to her side, and holding it with both hands swept the weapon forward, striking the attacker across the bridge of his nose. Blood exploded from his face in an arc of fine spray as his head snapped back. Droplets dusted her face creating an illusion of bright red freckles. As he fell, she reversed her swing and caught him hard behind his knees. He went down on his back, spread-eagled. She swung her stick over her head and landed a precise and disabling blow to his forehead that knocked him unconscious.
As she spun to face the next threat her eyes captured Arik’s and held. In the space of an instant, time slowed to a crawl. Her hair slowly loosened from its pins and swirled out around her. His breath caught and his heartbeat quickened as a rapturous surge raced through his body. Something eternal and familiar, with a sense of longing, unsettled him. In the next heartbeat, she tore her eyes away, leaving him empty. Time resumed its normal pace. Another attacker lay at her feet.
Arik joined the fight.

Guest Author Day with Kathryn Meyer Griffith

So Where Do I Go From Here?

I thought I’d write about something I feel many long established legacy authors are going through right now…deciding if they should stay with the traditional publishers or going it on their own with self-publishing. I mention this because I’m one of those lucky legacy authors who have jumped one-hundred percent into self-publishing on all my books (22 of them now going back to 1984 when my first book, Evil Stalks the Night, was originally published by Leisure paperbacks), my new novels as well as my older ones. I’ve been writing for over forty-four years and until I started self-publishing in 2012 I never made a living with my books. Now I do; more every year. Though I’ve always been known as a horror author, I also write romance, suspense, murder mysteries and romantic time-travel, but my novels blend genres and all of them have a large dash of romance. And, thus, I consider myself basically a storyteller. My paperbacks used to sit on the book shelves next to Stephen King’s and Anne Rice’s. I was published with Leisure and Zebra paperbacks in the 1980’s and 90’s, Avalon Books and a series of smaller publishers. My Dinosaur Lake series and my Spookie Town Murder series are my best sellers. My first Dinosaur Lake book was a 2014 Epic EBook Awards *Finalist* and so was my The Last Vampire in 2012.

Yet as the end of 2015 came and went I (miraculously) found myself in the amazing position of finally owning all my novels for the first time in thirty-two years because my last publisher was sold. I was given the choice to stay with the new owners or take my books and run. I ran – and ecstatically self-published every one of the last fourteen I’d still had with them. It was scary at first, yet I did it.

It’s an amazing feeling to now have complete control of my whole body of life’s work. Truthfully, I can’t believe so many years have gone by so quickly. I will say, through all the nightmares of dealing with publishers in the past – and there were many – I never stopped writing; never gave up and now here I am all these years later at long last reaping the rewards. Where has the time gone? It’s flown by like wild birds. I’m so proud to be a writer these days.

So…I’ve put new covers on all my older books (Dawne Dominique is my wonderful cover artist and now she’s done all of my 22 novels’ covers), tweaked them here and there, formatted them, and self-published them wide, which means they’re available everywhere now as eBooks, for the Kindle and Nook, and paperbacks. It was a lot to learn, but I learned it, with help from other Indie authors and KindleBoards. I’d already spent the last three years through ACX having them turned into Audible audio books, so now they’re also in audio. I’ve also placed my eBooks with a brand new program for libraries all over the country, and maybe someday over the world, sponsored by J.A. Konrath and August Wainwright…ebooksareforever. So soon (they haven’t officially launched yet) my eBooks will be available in libraries. It’s a new world out there for authors.

So after forty-four years of writing and having seen it all, gone through it all in my writing career, it feels like, I’ve progressed to a new stage. Doing and having it all. And it feels great. Please take a look at my stunning new covers and take a sample listen to any of my 21 audio books (soon to be 22). My eBooks are here: http://tinyurl.com/ld4jlow. Genre: Ancient Egyptian Time-Travel Romance
Self-Published everywhere.

Blurb for Egyptian Heart:
Maggie Owen is a beautiful, spirited Egyptologist…but lonely. Even being in Egypt on a grant from the college she teaches at to search for an undiscovered necropolis she’s certain lies below the sands beyond the pyramids of Gizah doesn’t give her the happiness she’d hoped it would. There has always been and is something missing. Love.
Then her workmen uncover Ramose Nakh-Min’s ancient tomb and an amulet from his sarcophagus hurls her back to 1340 B.C–where she falls hopelessly in love with the man she was destined to be with, noble Ramose, who faithfully serves the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaton and his queen Nefertiti.
She’s fallen into perilous times with civil war threatening Egypt. She’s been mistaken for one of Ramose’s runaway slaves and with her blond hair, jinn green eyes and fair skin she doesn’t fit in. Some say she’s magical and evil. Ramose’s favorite, Makere, attempts to kill her.
The people, angry the pharaoh Akhenaton has set his queen Nefertiti aside and he’s forced them to worship his god, Aton (instead of their many Egyptian gods), are rising up against him.
Maggie’s caught in the middle of it in a dangerous land and time she doesn’t belong in.
In the end, desperately in love with Ramose, will she find a way to stay alive and with him in ancient Egypt–and to make a difference in his world and history?
Because Maggie has finally found love. ***

EXCERPT of Egyptian Heart by Kathryn Meyer Griffith:
Yet I lingered and listened to the whispering outside on the wind, the compelling words in my ear...in my heart, urging me to listen to what they said: come to the tomb. Come to the tomb...right now!
Dizzy for a moment, I blinked and found myself in the tomb, standing beside Ramose’s sarcophagus. Someone had lit a lantern. At least there was light.
“How did I get in here?” I rubbed my eyes and shook my head. “I must be dreaming, that’s it. But this is so real.” I squeezed my eyes shut. Maybe if I kept them closed long enough I’d wake up.
But, eyes shut or not, I could feel I was still in the tomb. I could smell the dirt, the dust and the mold. I could feel the slight heat from the burning of the lantern.
Opening my eyes, I was alone and, yes, in the tomb. The workmen who hadn’t run off were asleep out on the desert in their tents. My trembling fingers brushed across the golden engraving on the sarcophagus. By the length of the coffin I believed the mummy must have been a tall man for his time. I’d only been able to decode a small part of the surface inscriptions so far and I’d been eagerly anticipating being able to finally lift the massive lid and see what we’d find underneath.
No matter the mystery of how I’d gotten into the tomb in the middle of the night without remembering it— perhaps I’d sleepwalked. I had been working awfully hard the last few days. Exhaustion could do funny things to a mind. I had to get back to my tent. I wasn’t dressed to meet people and sleep was what I needed...look...I was hallucinating. Grabbing a lantern, I turned to leave as shadows danced on the stone walls. Murmurs and rustlings drifted on the stale air and as I moved I glimpsed an object, a link or two of shiny silver I’d not seen before, sparkling on the lower base of the catafalque. Curiosity got the best of me.
I stooped down, reached out and pulled at the fragment of chain and a miniature compartment at the base of the sarcophagus was revealed. With my fingernails I pried open the tiny drawer and yanked its contents out into the light probably for the first time in thousands of years.
It was almost an identical match to the amulet hanging around my neck. The one Sayed had given me weeks ago. In the lamplight, I compared the two necklaces and they were the same. Almost. A luminescence had begun to emanate from the sarcophagus’s necklace. It was glowing.
I didn’t have time to think about why the scarab had turned into a lightning bug before I heard someone move behind me. I swung around, the shimmering amulet in my hands.
“Jehan, what are you doing here?” I was startled and couldn’t hide it. He’d disappeared weeks ago and no one had seen him since. Now he just appears out of nowhere?

Meet the Author:

Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-four years ago now, and have had twenty-two (ten romantic horror, two horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance, two thrillers, and four murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation Books/Eternal Press; and I’ve self-published my last ten novels with Amazon Kindle Direct and my Dinosaur Lake novels and Spookie Town Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away and Ghosts Beneath Us) are my best-sellers.
I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-seven years; have a son and two grandchildren and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois, which is right across the JB Bridge from St. Louis, Mo. We have a quirky cat, Sasha, and the three of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.
