Meet the Character Spotlight with Mychael Black

Please give a warm welcome to Cole England from Eternal (Fragile Web 2) by Mychael Black today as we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

Most likely that I’m a demon/vampire hybrid. My author is just weird like that. I also am not as old as some of his other characters, and, of course, I have a ridiculous amount of family drama.

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?

Sam? What can I say? I have thing for muscled twinks. He’s hot, talented as fuck, and ultra-loyal. Did I mention he’s HOT?!

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner(s)?

I’d have to say backstage at the first show I saw of his band, Fragile Web. And, actually, it was Sam who initiated the first kiss. Things just kind of went from zero to one thousand after that. That man has a VERY talented mouth.

Q: So tell me: What do you prefer: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?

I’m all for bare manflesh! That said, it doesn’t matter in the long run since they’re coming off anyway. *grins*

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure fire trick they can do to seduce you?

Exist. LOL Sam is IT for me. I was caught, hook, line, and sinker from the get-go. His kiss is a sure-fire way to seduce me, but he also accepts me in my demonic form. So… there’s that. *winks*

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed?

My tail. His dick. *winks*

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Eternal?

Nothing embarrassing, really. A bit traumatizing? Yeah, there was the last meeting with the father who tried to kill me.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

You really should check out Fragile Web! The band ROCKS!

Thank you Cole for joining us on 'Meet the Character' day here at Dawn’s Reading Nook Blog. You can find all of Mychael Black’s books at https://mychaelblack.com/.

Sam McIntosh knows he doesn’t need to be in the closet with his friends, but his family is another matter entirely. He keeps his sex life under wraps and never lets on to anyone that he enjoys any gender. So far, that’s worked just fine -- until his father hires a new guy to work on the family farm.

Cole England has far more secrets than the average man, the least of which is his vampiric nature. He’s on the run from hunters sent by his father, and they are closing in on him. The last thing he needs is to fall for the son of the humans who hired him on their farm.

Between Sam’s bigoted family and Cole’s hunters, it’ll be a miracle if they can manage to explore the blazing attraction neither of them can deny.

EXCERPT:

Cole made it to the club well into the band’s first set. He’d fought the urge for hours, but he justified going by wanting to honestly hear their music. They played covers, but they also did originals. The club crowd, hyped and fueled by all manner of things illicit and legal, packed the room all the way to the stage. Cole found a vacant spot at the bar simply by a stroke of luck. Drink in hand, he faced the stage.

The gorgeous singer had the crowd hanging on every word and eating out of the palm of her hand. The guitarist and bassist possessed such strong chemistry, even an idiot could tell they were together. Nothing and no one, however, compared to the sexy powerhouse behind the black and red drum kit.

Cole had come with the notion of just listening to the music and watching the show. He downed the last of his drink a few songs later, knowing damn well his good intentions flew out the window. He had to get his hands on Sam.

Another few songs followed, and the band ended their first set. Cole waited at the bar while the musicians worked their way through the crowd. While the others went in different directions, Sam headed straight for Cole.

“Damn,” Cole said when Sam stood beside him at the bar. “Amazing music.”

Sam grinned. “Thanks!”

“What are you drinking?”

Before Sam could answer, the bartender set a bottled water in front of him. Sam held it up. “I avoid alcohol during shows. Follow me.”

Without waiting for a reply, Sam turned and headed toward the stage but then went through a door. Cole walked in behind him, only to be met with a very welcome kiss.

Sam dove in with absolutely no inhibitions, and Cole opened himself for anything and everything the man gave him. Hands worked up under Cole’s shirt, while his own gripped Sam’s hips. Hardness pressed against Cole, making them both groan.

“God, I’d do anything to get you into bed,” Sam whispered.

Cole nodded. “You’re doing all the right things, that’s for sure.”

Sam chuckled. “Keep a look out.” Then he dropped to his knees.

A moment later, Cole’s head fell back to the wall, and he moaned Sam’s name as heat enveloped him. Cole ran his fingers through Sam’s short hair and thrust into Sam’s mouth. Deft, strong fingers toyed with his balls, timing gentle tugs with every movement of those lips up and down his cock.

“Sam…” Cole warned.

Sam hummed, and Cole just let go. He shot down Sam’s throat, legs threatening to give way. A few seconds later, Sam licked him clean and stood for another kiss. Cole loved tasting himself on Sam’s tongue. He pushed a hand into Sam’s pants to reciprocate.

“Come home with me after,” Sam murmured, breath warming Cole’s lips. “Need your cock in me.”

Sunday Series Spotlight~ Mychael Black's Secrets of Socendor

I have to admit, this is by far one amazing fantasy m/m series I have ever read. I love the characters, the story and this author does a marvelous job in capturing the reader's attention right from the first page....Check out the Secrets of Socendor.

Book One: The Lost Son
Fantasy M/M
Samhain Publishing
Available at Publisher

One warrior, one sorcerer, and a legacy that will change their lives forever…

In the world of Socendor, humans are forbidden from using magic and elves keep their distance.

Kalen Ysindroc has risen far from his humble beginnings as a blacksmith’s adopted son. Now the king’s general, he investigates reports of magic-wielding half-human, half-elven lithings sighted along the kingdom’s borders. It would be a lonely life, if not for the company of his best friend and long-time elven lover, Micheil Theirauf, the king’s sorcerer.

An attempt on Kalen’s life makes it clear to Micheil that there’s more afoot than random breaks in the land’s defenses. His lover is plagued by dreams no human should endure, and Micheil’s probe into Kalen’s subconscious reveals a past neither of them expected. And a future Kalen can’t escape.

Suddenly, everything Kalen never knew about his life is laid bare. A father possessed of terrible magical power. A half-brother who could be the family Kalen never had—or the catalyst that will rip Micheil out of his life forever…

This title was previously published but has been revised.

Book Two: Dragonblade
Samhain Publishing
Fantasy M/M
Available at Publisher

Winning this battle requires a faith stronger than steel…

Legends tell of a dragon-forged weapon so powerful, it possesses the ability to traverse time itself. Knowing the havoc it could wreak, the dragons sealed it deep beneath the mountains.

No one was meant to find it, let alone wield it.

General Kalen Ysindroc, leader of the human king’s armies and the long-lost son of Socendor’s most feared wizard-king of old, is in a race against time. His half brother, Braen, is searching for the sword as a means to return their father from the grave. Kalen must not let that happen. Joined by his elven lover, wizard Micheil Thierauf, he sets out on a journey beneath the mountains to stop Braen from doing the unthinkable.

As secrets come to light that test Kalen’s faith in every way possible, including his trust in the man he’s loved nearly all his life, the right path is as clouded as the murky, dragon-blood-tainted waters of the Ebon Sea. And Kalen is forced to make a decision that could very well be his last.

Book Three: Retribution
Samhain Publishing
Fantasy M/M
Available at Publisher

From the ashes of war emerges a fiery love.

Already despised as a half-elf, half-human lithing, exiled king Braen must face the destruction he has wrought. By resurrecting his father, he has unleashed a terrible evil upon the land. His only hope to save his people is to join forces with elves and humans, his traditional enemies. Which makes his undeniable desire for the human captain Jéan Bastien intolerable.

With the land of Socendor’s fate hanging in the balance, dealing with his lust for Braen is the last thing Jéan needs. Not only because Braen’s a lithing, but because Jéan has never before desired a man. Yet their magnetic attraction draws them together even as war drives them apart.

Time has run out for the people of Socendor. Led by General Kalen Ysindroc, Braen’s half brother, and his elven lover, wizard Micheil Thierauf, the united band of elves, lithings, and men march on Sunderlind, though their numbers are too few. As dragons darken the skies and arrows fly, love and loyalty must win the day…or darkness will reign forever.

About the Author

Call me Katherine or Mychael–I’ll answer to both. I’m a mother, student, author by trade, and editor by compulsion. I’ve been in the publishing business for several years, namely as a writer but also as an editor on occasion. It never fails, though. I always end up editing eventually.

I’m a proud bibliophile, to which my poor sagging bookcases can attest. I read all the time, namely fantasy and romance.

When not writing or reading or editing, I…eat. Maybe sleep. Or watch Spongebob. Yes. I am a self-proclaimed, thirty-something year old Spongebob Squarepants addict. Much to my roommate’s dismay. It’s fun.

Talking with Mychael Black/Excerpt

Welcome the lovely and talented Mychael Black today. I adore this author's work and can not wait for the next book to come out. So with out further adieu.....Here is Mychael Black....

When did you seriously sit down, and say to yourself, I’m going to write a novel?
You know, I'm not sure I ever sat down with the intention of writing a full novel. Usually, it's a matter of needing to get words out, so I start typing, and sometimes it ends up longer than I expected.

If you were to start again, with the knowledge you have now, what would be the first thing you do? Lots of things, but most important is probably not listening to empty criticism.

Do you have the support of family and friends? Absolutely. While some folks don't understand why I write it and they would never actually read it, they still support me 100%.

Do you have a book coming out? If so what? Nothing at the moment, but several are in the works--sequels and non-sequels. I wouldn't even know where to start with them. *laughs*

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing? Um, it's really about 50/50, though obviously tailored to fit the characters and stories.

Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow? I wish I could follow a schedule, but nope, I've always been the type to just go with it--wherever IT may lead.

What do you have coming up? Any teasers you want to give us? Nothing concrete yet, though several sequels are in the works. Namely ones for Changeling Press and Torquere Press. For Changeling, I'm working on a Hot Flash for the Dark Reign series. For Torquere, I'm working on the sequel to Arcanum.

What is your writing routine once you start a book? There isn't one. I'm always at the mercy of a very mercurial muse.

What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels, do you find them difficult to write? Once upon a time, absolutely not. Nowadays, I find myself struggling simply because I've got a ton of other things on my mind. Focusing is key.

What kind of research do you do? It depends on the story. Some require little research; others require a LOT. Being a naturally inquisitive person and an unrepentant bibliophile, I can generally find reasons to research just for the fun of it.

Fill in the blank favorites - Dessert. City. Season. Type of hero. Type of heroine. Dessert: way too many, but I adore a good Key Lime Pie. City: Washington DC for its historical offerings. Season: Fall--I hate the cold of winter and the heat of summer. Type of hero: the flawed, dark and brooding type. Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights... *shudders* Type of heroine: a woman who isn't ultra-skinny, and who knows what she wants and is tenacious enough to get it.

What are some of your favorite things to do, or your hobbies? Gaming. I'm a full-fledged gamer geek. Diablo 3 and Dragon Age 3 can't get here any sooner, can they??

Who are some of your other favorite authors and/or genres to read? Believe it or not, I'm not reading quite as much romance as I used to. Lately, I've been rereading old favorites from Douglas Clegg, Clive Barker, etc.

Which of your books has been the easiest to write?  The hardest?  The most fun? The easiest... hm, not sure. Each book has its ups and downs, so there really isn't one that was easier than the others. Hardest, probably anything here lately because of real life rearing its ugly head. The most fun, all of them, overall.

Which comes first, the story, the characters or the setting? Usually the characters, though that's not always the case.

If we asked your muse to tell us three things about you, what do you think they might say? Stubborn, grouchy, easily distracted. *laughs*

What is your favorite season and why? Fall, because it's not too hot, not too cold. The colors are beautiful, the breeze is perfect. And school is BACK IN SESSION!

Congratulations, your novel was just picked up by a major Hollywood studio. They are letting you cast the characters. Name the book you would choose to be made into a movie and who you think would play those characters. Oh, Lord. Shayne and I would LOVE to see The Prince's Angel in movie-form. As for the leads, I have no clue. I'd probably cast Johnny Depp just so I could ogle him nonstop.

If you could choose anywhere in the world to set up your desk and write, where would you like it to be? What’s so special to you about this place? A quiet, remote retreat in the Smoky Mountains. Why? Because I'm pure country and need the solitude and peace to focus well. Besides, the Smokies are without equal.

Blurb:

AJ remembers nothing about life before he began working for the sadistic vampire Dalton Gray. When Dalton's plans go awry, AJ is sure he's as good as dead. Then a mystery hero shows up and offers AJ something he never expected: a past.

Excerpt:

Everything hurt.

It wasn't the excruciating pain from before, but it was enough for AJ to know he sure as hell wasn't dead. Yet.

He kept his eyes closed, but wherever he was, it was relatively dark. Awareness started creeping back, and AJ gave into his morbid curiosity, opening his eyes slowly.

Where the fuck was he?

"You'll live."

AJ froze, his heart hammering in his chest. Blinking, he scanned the room slowly, not entirely sure he really wanted to see who had spoken. When his gaze settled on a distinctly shaped pocket of shadow, AJ swallowed. "Who are you?"

A faint red glow lit up a man's face, then faded. A soft exhale sent a plume of ash-gray smoke into the air. "Geoff."

"Geoff." AJ started to sit up, but the world spun suddenly, tilting on its axis. He dropped back onto the bed and prayed he wouldn't puke. Bed? He patted the mattress beneath him. Soft sheets, with the faint smell of laundry detergent. "Where am I?"

"A hotel room, Settlers' Inn, to be exact. Room 316."

"Why?"

Another exhale and the smoke curled upward toward the ceiling. "Because you're in my territory."

"Your territory?" AJ opened his eyes. After reassuring himself that he wouldn't hurl with the slightest movement, he turned his head toward the man in the shadows. "Are you some sort of gang leader?" It would be just his fucking luck.

"You could say that." The man -- Geoff -- leaned forward and stubbed out his cigarette in the cheap, clear glass ashtray on the table. "Why were you in the ravine, anyway?"

"Huh?" Furrowing his brow, AJ tried to remember everything that had happened. "I-I wasn't. My boss..." He bit his lip, knowing it would be stupid to tell this stranger anything. "I got into an argument with someone. I wasn't in a ravine; I was in... a warehouse. I think."

Geoff snorted and sat back into the shadows again. "Must've been one hell of an argument. You look like you went through a bone-crunching obstacle course."

Feels like it, too, AJ thought. "Who are you?"

"I told you."

Another cigarette was lit, the glow from the flame illuminating a little more of the man's face. Rugged, little bit of stubble, angular jaw; handsome, that was for certain. AJ chastised himself for even having the gall to think something like that while lying on what could easily become his deathbed. Speaking of which...

"How'd I end up here?" And why am I not dead?

"I was... hunting, and I found you in the ravine. You looked like hell. Look better now, though. You'll survive whatever the fuck happened." Geoff took another drag and exhaled a few seconds later. "You have yet to tell me what you were doing there."

AJ sighed and stared up at the ceiling. "Well, I guess if you were going to kill me, you would've already done it."

"Yep."

He chose to ignore the almost casual way Geoff said that. "My boss beat the fuck out of me, all right? Happy now?"

"No. Why?"

"Why the fuck should I tell you?"

AJ suddenly found himself face to face with the most heart-stopping set of hazel eyes he'd ever seen.

"Because I just saved your ass from the beggars and thugs who would gladly fuck it down there."

Fuck. Was a man supposed to look that God damn good?

Meet Author Mychael Black

Tell us about your latest book/upcoming releases. Is it part of a series and if so, can we read it as a standalone or do we need to read the others in the series first?

My latest release is The Lost Son, and it’s book 1 in the Secrets of Socendor series. It was previously published with another publisher, but I expanded and revised it for Samhain. It’s no secret that fantasy is my first literary love, and The Lost Son is my first full foray into the genre. It just happens to include gay men as the heroes.

What makes a good book to you? Story? Characters? Exotic locations?

All of the above, really. Though, if I HAD to pick one, I’d have to say characters. I have to feel for the characters in order to keep reading.

What's your favorite pizza toppings?

Hm, well, Papa John’s Pizza has this AWESOME BBQ Chicken & Bacon pizza that’s to die for.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to one of your characters?

LOL Killed him. Of course, he’s an angel, so he came back, but at the time, it was absolute HELL.

Which of your books contains the sexiest love scene?

Oh, wow. That’s a tough one. I’m quite partial to the scene in The Lost Son where Micheil and Kalen do it on the back of Micheil’s horse en-route to the elven lands.

Which of your covers is your favorite?

The Lost Son. I LOVE the cover and it perfectly conveys the story and characters.

Which of your books was the easiest to write? The hardest?

Probably The Prince’s Angel (TPA 1) with Shayne Carmichael. It was our first book and we wrote all 90k+ words in a month. Of course, we/I haven’t even *touched* that record since. LOL The hardest, too many, to be honest. My muse has been temperamental lately.

What is coming in 2010 from you?

Let’s see… Spirits of Abaddon: Sanctified (book 2), Blood & Fire 3 (both with Changeling); my Chaser series, Hearth & Home, in a single volume/ebook (Torquere); a Spice It Up story for Torquere using Vervain as the herb. There’s no telling what else. LOL

Where can readers find you on the web?

If you could meet any character from any book, who would it be, what would you do and why?

Dain Lavrans or Mychael ab Arawn. Dain is the hero in The Chalice and the Blade, and Mychael is the hero in Dream Stone. They are books 1 and 2 (respectively) in Glenna McReynold’s medieval romance trilogy. (Book 3 is Prince of Time.) And yes, that’s where I came up with the name ‘Mychael’ for my pen name. LOL

What would I do? *grins*

As for why… I read those books years ago, and those two heroes have held strong places in my heart since.

EXCERPT:

Micheil watched Kalen’s chest rise and fall with every breath. Kalen slept deeply, possibly already dreaming. Micheil smiled. Perhaps this would be easier than he had expected. He moved closer to Kalen and felt himself settle within the general’s mind. Snippets of Kalen’s dream came to Micheil then.

Fire. And smoke. Deep crimson red. The brilliance of a newly struck fire. And death.

“From the depths of the earth and the sea,

From the endless skies and the mists of time,

I call thee, beasts of fire…”

An unseen force threw Micheil to the ground. When he rolled over, the sight that greeted him nearly stopped his heart.

Kalen stood on a hilltop, his arms raised to the swirling forms above him. In and out of the voluminous clouds, great beasts flew. Fiery plumes of red and orange surrounded the behemoths, and their obsidian scales glimmered in the silver moonlight as it cascaded down onto the valleys and hills below.

Then Kalen turned. The green depths of his eyes blazed with an internal fire as his gaze settled on Micheil.

“You are in danger,” Micheil warned after several moments of silence.

“Aye,” Kalen said with a slow nod. “As are you. You are mine. And for that very reason, you will be hunted.”

Micheil sat bolt upright in his bed. Sweat beaded on his skin and trickled slowly over his face. The chill of the room pierced him, yet it did nothing to cool the fire within. Kalen’s fire. But how? Kalen Ysindroc had no such magic within him.

“Sweet Malin, save us.”

Meet "New To Me" Author: Mychael Black

Spirits of Abaddon: Bad Blood

Mychael Black

http://www.changelingpress.com/product.php?&upt=book&ubid=1294

Energy hummed through Jesse, and he left the techs to break down his kit. The crowd normally gathered in front of the stage had dispersed, some to the bar, others scattered around the small but popular club. He grinned and caught a bottle of water when the bartender tossed it to him.

"Good show."

Jesse closed his eyes and barely suppressed a shiver. He clutched the cold bottle, hoping it would put out the heat surging through his body. He knew that voice. He heard it every night in his head, every time he wrapped his fingers around his own cock.

"Thanks." He forced himself to turn around and meet an enigmatic grey gaze.

Gabriel Walsh embodied everything Jesse had ever wanted: gorgeous looks, expressive eyes, a body built for sin, and all in all, a decent personality. Only one problem... Gabriel also had fangs. And drank blood. Human blood.

That fact alone scared the hell out of Jesse more than he cared to admit.

Yet he couldn't resist panting Gabriel's name every night, even if no one else heard it.

Jesse struggled for something to say, but his voice refused to work beyond one-syllable words. Gabriel smiled, the effect disarming until his fangs came into view. Unlike Julian, Gabriel didn't hide them. Jesse wondered if there were more differences between them -- namely feeding. Julian didn't kill, but Jesse had a gut feeling Gabriel did, and would gladly do so again.

"Jess!"

Grateful for something to break the tension, Jesse turned away from Gabriel and waved at Jason. "I'll catch you guys later!" Then he returned his attention to Gabriel. "Um, I need to go."

Gabriel nodded and motioned toward the door. "I'm sure we'll meet again."

"Yeah."

Jesse hurried out of the bar and only stopped walking fast when he neared his car. He got in and shut the door, but instead of turning the key, he rested his forehead to the steering wheel, eyes closed, and concentrated on breathing. Why, out of all the guys in Atlanta, did he have to fall for the one who scared the ever-loving shit out of him?

A knock on the driver's side window startled him, and he jerked his head up to see Gabriel crouching beside the car. Jesse rolled down the window, hoping the door itself would be enough of a barrier between them.

"Are you all right?"

"Yeah, yeah. Just... tired, I guess. Long show."

"Why do you fear us?"

"I don't." Jesse shrugged. "I don't like vampires; that's all. At least Julian doesn't freak me out anymore."

"And me?"

Jesse refused to meet Gabriel's gaze. "You aren't like him."

"Oh?"

A single touch, a finger beneath his chin, drew Jesse's face back around. This man embodied sex appeal so strong it chipped away at Jesse's defenses little by little. Gabriel Walsh also was, without a doubt, dangerous.

"I would never hurt you."

Jesse wanted to believe it. He wanted it almost as much as Gabriel himself. Gabriel traced Jesse's jaw with his fingertip and it took every ounce of willpower on Jesse's part to not chase that finger with his mouth. He stared at lips he'd fantasized about, only to realize he hadn't heard a word Gabriel said.

He blinked and looked up. "Um, sorry. I wasn't..." Gabriel smiled slowly. "I didn't..." He watched, entranced by the lips nearing his own. "I..."

Stop. Stop, stop, stop...

The first touch stole his breath and the protests died on his tongue. In a momentary lapse of reason, Jesse gave in. Gabriel took control, tongue sweeping through Jesse's mouth, hands on either side of his head. Before Jesse could even think about how far he really wanted this to go, however, Gabriel drew back.

"I know you don't trust me, but I'm here should you ever need me."

Jesse watched Gabriel walk away and a part of him screamed for more than a kiss. Much more.
