Guest Author Day with Laurie M. Baird: Beyond Courage Anthology & #Giveaway

Hi reader! Romance author, Laura M. Baird here, excited to be featured on Dawn’s blog.

Today I’m talking about military romance; specifically, my military romance, Surrender to Forever, in the Beyond Courage limited edition collection. This anthology consists of stories from award winning and bestselling authors, headed by Stephanie Morris.

Military romance holds a special place in my heart since hubby and I are US Army veterans. And while our service was limited, and neither of us faced hardship (as many do), we’re proud of our time and accomplishments.

We met in Savannah, GA at Hunter Army Airfield in the late 80s: my husband, a diesel mechanic, and I, an electronic maintenance personnel. My dream was to fly helicopters, but the recruiter wasn’t about to tell me I’d never make the height and reach requirements then with me being only five feet in height. But, he could get me on a flightline. And he did. Between Savannah and tours in Honduras, I worked on equipment that went into fixed-wing aircraft as well as what we called a repeater site – a lovely wooden cabin on top of a mountain. I loved it!

My service experience was fundamental to the person I am today; learning discipline and commitment and awareness and sacrifice.

Many writers take much of their life’s experiences and weave them into their stories, and I’m no exception. While I don’t base a character solely on me or another person I know, there are definitely traits from many, molded into who I hope will be a relatable character in some aspect.

In my story, Surrender to Forever, my heroine is an independent, badass who follows her dreams no matter the circumstances or demands of others. Sometimes, in spite of others. Janelle sets out to prove women are more than a pretty face. She enjoys competition no matter the venue and always strives to be the best. She loves wearing snarky t-shirts that express her personality. This is, in fact, something I enjoy as well. Sayings like: Apparently I have an attitude; Fueled by coffee and chaos; Feed me tacos and tell me I’m pretty. And those are just a few. She’s rarely in anything other than jeans and tees.

My hero is a good ol’ American boy, raised in the mountains of Idaho. Kurt’s an only child but always wanted siblings. His parents were blue-collar workers he respected. He too can usually be found in jeans and tees (patriotic ones); even in the oppressive heat of Texas where he meets Janelle. He brings the emotion to the relationship, teaching Janelle tenderness and the ability to shift focus without sacrificing the end game.

These two go through a very emotional journey, but like in all romance, they achieve their well-earned satisfying ending (HFN). Well, truth be told, it won’t be the end as they’ll no doubt make a reappearance in future installments of my continuing military romance series.

Being a part of this anthology as well as upcoming collections is an honor to be among spectacular authors. It gives me the opportunity to grow as a writer and hopefully expand my readership. I want readers to engage and relate or simply lose themselves in a story that moves them.

Enjoy an excerpt below and be sure to enter the giveaway. If you’re new to me and my stories, you can visit my website, sign up for my newsletter, and receive volume 1 of my Military Romance Collection for free.

Many thanks for taking the time to be here. And to Dawn for all she does in the author/reader community!

Excerpt from Surrender to Forever ~ part of the Beyond Courage collection:

Janelle

“Want assistance?”

Although it sounds sincere, especially since he used want, and not snarky with the use of need, like the first three times I’ve been asked, frustration at that repeated question either makes me want to scream or turn the guy into my pack mule. Instead, I raise my head, ready to tell him to politely fuck off.

Only I’m stunned into silence when I stare into Seaman Stanley’s light blue eyes. Now that he’s front and center in my vision, I have the opportunity to see it’s truly the most appealing face I’ve ever laid eyes on. His entire aura inexplicably makes me warm and gooey inside like a fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie. You know, because they’re the best cookies in the world.

“Janelle, right?” Mr. Hometown Goodness asks as I continue to remain mute. “I, uh, I don’t want to assume you can’t handle that load, but it looks cumbersome.” His eyes shift to the massive stack of books I’m currently juggling in my arms before staring back at me. I’m then drawn to the crooked smile lifting one corner of his lips, and I can’t help but mimic the move.

Of course, I’ve seen him in classes and know his name is Kurt, er Seaman Stanley. I just hadn’t paid him, or many others for that matter, close attention. Selfish? Probably. Self-centered? Maybe. Studies come first. There will come a time when a study group is needed and hands-on, practical training forces us to work together, but otherwise it’s basically every student for themselves.

We’re barely a few weeks into Hospital Corps “A” School training in San Antonio and the pace is demanding. But I can’t and won’t complain because this is exactly where I want to be. Well, at this very minute, I’d give anything to be able to teleport back to my quarters instead of trying to negotiate campus in the July heat with my arms overflowing with books.

“Seaman Stone?” Kurt says, lifting a brow as his gaze toggles from me to the books then back again.

“Uh, yeah, help would be appreciated, thanks.”

He nods and starts to relieve me of several books, easily stacking them on an arm so they lay against his chest. And an impressive chest it is, I think to myself as I can’t stop staring. My gaze lands on the identification badge above his right breast pocket. How did I forget he was the student leader in our class? I need to focus, I chastise myself. But it’s definitely a challenge with his imposing form. He’s easily half a foot taller than me and twice as broad. I suddenly imagine his muscular arms wrapping around me, cocooning me in a strong, protective embrace.

“A little light reading, I take it?”

His question snaps me back to reality as I wonder where the hell that image came from. I don’t need any embraces from any man, especially one who could no doubt charm the panties off every female within a hundred-mile radius. Or more likely the entire state of Texas.

Realizing I hadn’t answered his rhetorical question, I shake my head and chuckle. “Hardly, as you well know. Just thought I'd get a jump on things.”

Now it’s his turn to chuckle which instantly makes my insides even gooier.

Stop. It.

“Looks like you’re getting more than a jump. Looks like you’ve already moved beyond Corps training and headed right into med school.”

“That’s the plan. Eventually.”

“Yeah?”

I nod. “Um, say, can we move out of this heat? I’m ready to melt. Hadn’t really planned to grab all these, hence thinking I wouldn’t need to bring a bag to put them in.”

“But you couldn’t resist.”

I laugh. “No, I couldn’t. I’m surprised the librarian let me take them all.”

We start walking side by side, heading toward the barracks. “Don’t think there’s a limit on reference materials you can check out.” Kurt, er Seaman Stanley eyes the remaining books in my arms. “Threw in some fiction, I see?”

Even in the oppressive heat, I feel my cheeks flare with even more warmth and a touch of embarrassment because the bare-chested man cover on the top book leaves no doubt as to what kind of fiction I’ll be reading.

“Nothing wrong with that,” he continues. “Can’t be all study, all the time. I’m into Lee Child’s Reacher novels, myself.”

“Did you watch the movies or the series?”

“Nah, although it’s hard to escape previews or snippets around the web. Wrong casting in the movie, in my opinion.”

“Which seems to be the popular opinion from what I remember reading.”

“Yeah,” he chuckles. “As for the series, that guy is more the Reacher character.”

“But you’re still not tempted to watch,” I state rather than question.

“Nope. I’d rather get lost in the book.”

I smile. “I concur.”

We continue across campus, finding no relief from the unrelenting sun. I feel sweat trickling down my temples, not to mention all the lovely crooks and crannies hidden beneath my fatigues. I glance up at Kurt who seems utterly unaffected by the heat. He looks pristine, as if he’d just showered and dressed, ready for the day.

A few more steps has us approaching my barracks, but as we round the corner, I suddenly find myself plastered against Kurt’s side with my back pressed against a wall. Apologies sound off and I hear shuffling as several pairs of boots recede into the distance.

“You okay?” Kurt’s voice rumbles through me and I lift my head to stare up at him.

“Uh, yeah. Good reflexes there. Even managed to hang onto all the books.” He chuckles while stepping back, allowing me to move. “What the heck happened? And how did you know to react so quickly?”

“Just a few students rushing around.” He shrugs. “I heard their footsteps, wasn’t sure how close they were.”

“Pretty close,” I chuckle. “Thanks, by the way. Glad I didn’t end up on my donkey.”

He laughs. “You’re very welcome. Happy to protect your donkey.”

I snort while looking around then nod my head toward the entrance. “Coast is clear.” I start for the door with him trailing behind me. Glancing over my shoulder, I say, “I’ll announce you if you don’t mind carrying those up to my room.”

“Oh, sure. That’s if you don’t mind.”

“Hell no, I’ll take advantage of you.” Realizing how that sounded, I quickly add, “I mean, advantage of your help.” He chuckles softly while I mutter, shit.

“Hey, I knew what you meant.” As we stop at the door, he leans in close and whispers, “Just for the record, you can take advantage of me anytime.”

We lock eyes and for once, I’m speechless; unable to decide if he’s joking or hitting on me. And unable to decide which I want it to be.

He straightens as his face becomes too serious. “My apologies, that was inappropriate. I’ll just deposit the books inside.” When he starts to turn, I can’t stop myself from blurting out.

“No, wait. I mean, come inside.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

He nods and manages to open the door, allowing me to slip inside first.

“Male on the floor!” I yell, alerting any female residents within earshot.

“Impressive set of lungs, Seaman Stone.”

“Thanks.” I give him a cheesy grin.

Survival

December 1692

Salem, Massachusetts

Alexander hid in the loft of the old barn despite the bitter cold blowing between the boards and swirling around him. He had traipsed through the snow from the nearby house to his secret hiding place in the hay to spend a few moments alone.

His body was undergoing major changes. Other boys went through transformations at this age too. Alexander learned as much from the gossip and stories he heard of expanding muscles, hair growing in new places, and voices deepening. Except those alterations hardly worried him.

He jumped when the violent wind slammed a door shut beneath him. He reached over and grabbed the small doll his mother had made him long ago, which he played with until his father announced him too old for such things. After that, he’d hid his toy up here.

No, nothing going on physically alarmed him, not even his emerging sexual excitement. The pastor’s warning against sinful thoughts seemed out of touch. Though he’d never say it aloud, Alexander thought that a bunch of rot.

He came to his hideaway today because of the memory of his mother’s lesson from last summer when he’d turned thirteen. Alexander curled up in a blanket, clutching his doll, warding off the freezing temperature as the blizzard covered the landscape outside the barn.

One hot summer evening after dusk, his mom had taken him out to a darkened field and spoken in a whisper.

“Your body is changing,” she had said. He blushed at the memory, embarrassed that his mother noticed such things in him. “But that’s not all. Listen closely, Alexander. It’s a dangerous time. Not everyone understands your family. They’ll come for us if we’re not careful. There’s a legacy in you that will blossom in the next year or so. I’ll teach you about it. You must promise to keep it a secret. Come only to me as the changes stir and when you have questions.”

He had nodded and said nothing else, too humiliated by the thought of talking to his mother about his body’s transition.

Since then, he had asked a number of times about this mysterious new power in him, only for her to admonish that he was not ready to learn more. If his father ever overheard, he scowled and told them to keep quiet.

There came an alarm, as if a wisp on the tail of a storm, blowing a chill into his very brain. He reached for his mother’s crystal, one she allowed him to examine from time to time if he promised to keep it hidden and never speak of its magic. The glass orb fit in the palm of his hand, smooth and clear. Peering into the crystal, he saw a vision of men: the pastor, the sheriff, and others, riding their horses hard through the storm and coming toward the farm. In the last month, images of the present had flashed into the crystal, a power he understood to come along with the other alterations to his being. No doubt his mother referenced these forces during that warm night in the field on his thirteenth birthday.

Minutes later, Alexander heard horse hooves pounding outside, and a horse whinnied as the posse came to a halt. The fact they ventured out on such a horrid night caused Alexander’s heart to race.

Alexander peeked out a crack in the barn to see the men gather together after tying their horses to a post. The family’s old dog bellowed a warning as the men approached the house.

“Goody Macbeth? Come out.”

Instead of his mother, his father came to the door and held his musket.

Alexander shivered at the cold and then ducked under a pile of hay when he heard someone climbing up the ladder toward him.

“Alexander?” his mother whispered. “Show yourself. I know you’re up here. We haven’t much time.”

Alexander sensed the urgency in her voice, so different from the gentle way she always spoke to him, even after a transgression. He saw her crawling toward him.

“Hush yourself and listen, child.” She took him in her arms as if again a babe. He thought better of resisting, despite the adult in him protesting this infantile turn of events. “You remember what I told you about the changes you’ll experience? I wanted to teach you about them at the appropriate time. I wanted to do it as my mother did for me. But they’re going to take me away.”

“I won’t let them.” Alexander reached for his own musket, but his mother held him tightly.

“Listen to me. You can’t do anything.”

Alexander frowned at the thought of cowardice. Except, he loved his mother too much to disobey. He relaxed again in her arms.

“Good. That’s a good boy. If you lash out, they’ll get you too. I need you to survive.” She leaned over and glanced out the crack in the barn for herself. He glanced over her shoulder and saw his father in a heated discussion with the men.

Only when his mother pulled him back into the hay did he notice the tear trickling down her cheek.

“These are evil times in which we live, son. Not the evil they’ll speak of, with Satan coming into their midst. No.” She shook her head. “It’s the innocent they kill. The complete misunderstanding of the power. This is what you must learn, and I’ve but a few minutes to teach you. You have power in your blood. To see the present, no matter where it may take place. To heal. To control the wind. Alexander, believe me, it’s not from a demon. It’s from your grandmother, and your great grandfather before her. Use it to protect yourself. Use it for good, no matter what you may hear otherwise.”

“Where is your wife?” They both jumped at the sheriff’s screaming voice.

“Are you a witch?” Alexander whispered to his mother. “Am I a witch?”

“Give me your hand.” Alexander held his hand out to his mother, who took it and then pressed their index fingers together. A warmth cut through the biting cold that had taken hold of every other part of his body and then seemed to course through his veins. He felt dizzy for a moment, but then a new powerful control overcame him.

New Release Book Review: Condor's Fury by Clive Cussler & Graham Brown (Numa Files #20)

The NUMA crew is facing their strangest and most deadly case yet in CONDOR'S FURY.

Find it at Amazon
Release Date: September 5th, 2023
Contemporary Mystery/Suspense Action/Adventure fiction

My Rating of Condor's Fury: 5 Stars and a Series Recommended Read

My Review:

For Kurt Austin and the NUMA crew, things are about o heat up when a distress call from a boat while out on training mission for NUMA has them finding a damaged vessel, a crew that ambushes Kurt and Joe Zavala who seem terrified of something. What happens next has them baffled. Kurt and Joe think the crew are suffering from Havana Syndrome which only deepens the mystery of what is going on and when danger mounts and some members of the NUMA crew get afflicted by the same thing, it’s up to Joe and Kurt to figure things out before their comrades and friends are forever damaged as well as save the world from a danger no one sees coming.

Man, I love Clive Cussler’s books and his NUMA Files series is full of the action, mystery and more that you expect from one of his books. CONDOR’S FURY is another perfect addition to this series and one I couldn’t put down. I tore through this book with eagerness as I love the dynamics Kurt and the NUMA crew have together as coworkers as well as friends. Plus each character is so different from one another and that works so well in this author’s books as a whole. I love how unique and entertaining these characters are in this series as well as the whole. There was plenty of edge of your seat anticipation to a few chuckles as there are some lighter moments that left me giggling at times. These two authors deliver a pulse pounding ride from start to finish and I know I am not the only one who enjoys high stakes built up in a book packed with twists and turns galore that keep the reader on their toes.

CONDOR’S FURY is another splendid story set around the NUMA crew and delivers everything within its pages you would expect from past books. Even though Clive Cussler is no longer with us, Graham Brown keeps his memory alive in this newest book. Filled with action pounding scenes to exotic locales, the authors deliver one wild rife from start to finish. I am eager to see where they go in this series and how they go about it. I am just glad Mr. Brown doesn’t change the core of this series, which is filled with the characters readers have grown to love and enjoy.

Book Review: Marie Force's Five Years Gone

Ava thought she had it all with her hot romance with Jon until her lover goes out on a mission and disappears. Picking u p the pieces was hard but she does it until her past comes back to throw her life into a spin.

My Rating for Five Years Gone: 5 Stars and a Recommended Read

My Review of Five Years Gone:

When Ava met John in San Diego, she found a man who consumed her, fell in love with and was just happy as can be in the two years they were together. Then John was called to duty in the military and that is where her life she lived with John went to hell in a handbasket because he went away and never returned. Five years has passed, and Ava decides to leave San Diego and move back to New York City, to her family and try to put her life, her heart, back together again. But not knowing where John is, what happened to him or even if he is still a live or dead, has colored everything even as she tries to move past the past and embrace a possible new romance with a new man but John lingers in her mind and heart. Can Ava finally put to rest the past in order to have the present and future she longs for? Can she ever find peace with someone new while the man who left her behind haunts her every moment of every day?

FIVE YEARS GONE is a story that will leave you emotionally gutted. It’s a story that literally ripped me asunder and I was left shaking with emotions that I just could not process. Ms. Force delivers a powerful story that will leave you breathless as you follow Ava’s journey from the moment she met John to the present where she tries to figure out how to live with no answers to so many questions and a heart that is shattered beyond belief. With each page you flip, the reader is drawn more and more into Ava’s story and we get to see how she copes, her relationships with family, new friends and more as she tries to live once again. What go to me the most was how real the characters were. Ava, John, Eric and all the rest as they helped move the story along even as I was eager to see what Ava’s would find out in the end. The author does an amazing job in capturing each character’s vibrant and at times annoying personality quirks. Though yes, I have to say sometimes I really wanted to shake Ava at times and say to her to get help or to talk about what happened.  Several twists had me on the edge of my seat and I swear I was just about ready to bawl when the last few chapters came about and I really don’t want to give away to many things because, man, this book just guts you to a level I haven’t experienced in a long time while reading a book.

FIVE YEARS GONE is a story about moving on even when you can’t think of doing so, of forgiveness, of love, duty and so much more. Ms. Force delivers a stunning story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and flipping the pages till the very end of the book is closed. With characters like Ava, Eric and more to keep the pace moving we get to see how one woman chose to move on with her life even though the answers she seeks may never materialize. FIVE YEARS GONE is a departure over this author’s past books and yes, she is still one of my favorite authors that I will auto-buy when ever she has a release coming up. FIVE YEARS GONE is a different kind of story than what her readers may be used to. The only draw back I got was the constant character back and forth chapter wise. One minute we are in Ava’s head, next chapter maybe Eric’s or a friend or back to Ava. It got confusing at first and yes, a bit annoying, until the story started to smooth out and we got to see how Ava was and the path she was trying to forge by herself. I recommend not coming into this book expecting a classic Marie Force story. What we get with FIVE YEARS GONE is something different, emotional and downright perfect in this world we live in today. Yes, its intense and keeps you running the gauntlet of emotions but the ending though not one I might of thought would happen in the beginning but where Ava finally ends in the final chapter is the perfect ending for her in my opinion. But get the tissues and keep them handy because you WILL cry with this story. You will go and hug your partner/lover/husband/family/pets tight for a few minutes and just feel because I can say with all honesty, Ms. Force, you deliver a story that left me gutted emotion wise and I can’t wait to see where the sequel will go next.

Book Tour Spotlight: Kayelle Allen's Bringer of Chaos Books 1 and 2 Bundle

Bringer of Chaos

Book 1 & 2 Bundle

New Release

Synopsis

If you're fighting immortals who always get back up, you'd better have a way to do the same thing. Otherwise, it's lights out...

When you're a soldier genetically enhanced to the point of near immortality and you fight a mortal soldier resurrected with the pilfered blood of your people, friendship never enters the equation.

But what if the enemy you've despised your entire life holds the sole key to your salvation?

Here's what readers say:

◆ I shouldn't like Pietas. He's arrogant and pretends he's uncaring, but he's one of the most fascinating characters I've read recently.

◆ I loved this story! A scifi bromance like nothing else I’ve ever read.

◆ Pietas – the Ultra of awesome powers, both mental and physical – is left helpless and doomed by humans and a betrayer from his own kind. Six – a once-human ghost who should be the sworn enemy of any Ultra – saves Pietas from a destiny worse than physical death. The two are then marooned together on a distant, most likely deserted planet.

◆ The Ultra has vowed never to accept help from anyone even close to human. That vow is challenged by his need to survive. The ghost has pledged to destroy all Ultras on sight. Watching Pietas and Six grapple through this deep dilemma was nothing short of beautiful for me. If these adversaries can navigate the chasm of hatred, distrust and male ego between them, maybe there’s hope for our own fractured world.

◆ I was...immersed into a setting where every character is dealing with decisions, and where the wrong one is like having a jar of nitroglycerine and dropping it at his or her own feet. Characters to root for, and a story that satisfies all of the criteria of what makes up an excellent novel.

Read the Bringer of Chaos Bundle 1, containing the first two books in the ongoing Bringer of Chaos saga plus a bonus short story, Lights Out.

✓ Think Enemy Mine meets Lethal Weapon on a deserted, sci-fi world.

Lights Out

Tornahdo is facing his most dangerous mission, the very reason Ghost Corps exists.

He must take out the king responsible for every war between humans and Ultras since the origin of the Ultra bloodline.

If he succeeds, the war is over.

If he doesn't, the Ultras will rule mankind for another thousand years…

Excerpt:

In this scene, Tornahdo is having a quiet drink prior to leaving on a mission, when a member of Ghost Corps shows up.

Ravenstongue sauntered toward him. "Why you here?"

Tornahdo kicked back in his chair. After stretching out his legs, he crossed his ankles. "Why do you care?"

"Big ops tomorrow. Lights out in ten. Time for you to go home and go to bed."

Behind the bar, the keeper closed up shelves and battened down doors.

"Yeah?" Tornahdo flicked a hand toward the door. "I'll follow you out."

"I'm not leavin'. Didn't you hear? We passed inspection with the highest scores. Got a free night out." Ravenstongue jabbed a finger toward Tornahdo. "But you gotta go home like a good boy."

In no kingdom in the galaxy would that happen.

Ravenstongue lifted two fingers, signaling his cohorts.

The keeper ducked behind the bar while the goons flanked their wannabe boss, imbecilic grins in place.

A pair of demons usually sat on Tornahdo's shoulders. The bad demon laid out strategy while the good demon discouraged action. Tonight, the good demon flipped a middle finger toward Ravenstongue with a not-so-subtle suggestion to kick his ass.

Tornahdo took his time rising, slid his chair under the table. "What did you say?"

"I said, 'You gotta go home like a good boy.'"

Hanging his thumbs in his belt, Tornahdo gave him a slow smile. "Go back to the bar, finish your drink and we'll pretend we're all friends and leave together. This is your last chance for a peaceful end."

"Peaceful." With a scoff, Ravenstongue jerked his head toward Short Goon. "You hear that?"

"Yeah. Maybe we oughta do what--"

Ravenstongue jabbed him with an elbow.

"I mean, yeah! I heard that." He leaned closer to his boss. "We gonna?"

"No, you idiot. Shut your face and back me up."

How did these hotheads enlist? Ghost Corps must have been desperate for bodies. Literally. A fighter's corpse they could reanimate. Which was a sobering thought.

Was that what the corps thought of him?

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos

Traitors stripped the immortal king Pietas of everything.

Now, marooned on a deserted planet, his only hope of finding his people lies with the human who imprisoned him.

That doesn't mean he'll humiliate himself by asking for help. Enough is enough. Pietas already died a thousand times to save them. How much more can he sacrifice?

But when he realizes that without humbling himself before a mortal, he will never find his exiled family, his salvation relies on the one thing he swears does not exist.

The honor of a human…

Excerpt:

In this scene, Pietas experiences an unfamiliar situation -- having a mortal friend.

"My father would get so angry with me, Six. He'd say it under his breath, but I heard. He'd call me useless. I say that about myself."

"How can you think of yourself as useless? You're the most powerful Ultra ever created. Everybody knows that."

With a twitch of his fingers, Pietas dismissed the praise. "It is not how I feel. If I were telepathic, I could have found my people by now. If I were telepathic, I wouldn't have gotten us marooned on an alien world. No, my father was right. When it comes to telepathy, I am useless."

"Wow." Six tossed part of a small branch onto the fire, sending sparks spiraling upward. "Biggest pity party I've ever been to."

Pietas leaned on one hand to face Six. "What is a pity party?"

"When you feel sorry for yourself and expect others to do the same thing 'Poor me. Look how I'm suffering.' That's a pity party."

"Excuse me for sharing how I felt."

"You were doing fine, until you said you were useless. I don't care who told you that. It's a pure out-and-out lie and you know it. To let anybody else's opinion of you keep you from being your best..." Six threw down the stick. "Look, Ultra. That's not you, okay? Listen to me. I sat with you while you were nothing but two big blue eyes, and blackened skin stretched over bones. You couldn't lift your head, you were so weak. You tried not to show how much pain you were in, but I could see it. I could hear it in the way you panted, trying to breathe. The way you hobbled about as if all your bones were broken. But you fought like a caged animal to get your strength back. I will never accept any lie about you being useless. You're one of-- No, you are the strongest person I've ever known."

The pride at those words from so dear a friend--a human friend--brought tears to his eyes. Pietas turned his head, and blinked them away.

Excerpt:

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire, the not-quite-human Six offers water to the immortal king, Pietas.

Six slid their canteen off over his head and held it out to Pietas.

Accepting anything from a human, an altered one at that, had violated every instinct at first. To take from an enemy, yes. Always. Let one give you something as if you needed it? Admit a weakness before an enemy?

Never.

But this was Six.

Pietas took it.

Ultras could go days without water, but they consumed it when they had it. He wiped one dusty hand across his mouth. The satisfaction of assuaged thirst never failed to please. What simple things in life brought pleasure! In captivity, he'd dreamed of even a drop to cool his tongue. He'd sworn he'd never take water for granted again.

Six had offered it to their companions during the climb, but the entire lot refused anything a mortal's lips had touched. Yes, Six was a quasi-immortal. A dead human soldier who'd been resurrected and enhanced with Ultra blood. A "ghost." But to the others, that gave him even less status.

Pietas wavered on few things, but on this? Should he call the man human, mortal, quasi-immortal, or ghost? He'd elected to choose as the mood struck. But one in particular annoyed Six.

"Thanks, ghost." He thrust the canteen against Six's chest.

Staggering, he swore in Spanish. "Find another name for me."

"Tell me your mortal name then."

"You know I can't." Six scratched his cheek. "Gotta protect my family. If your kind knew who they were, they'd slaughter them. You wouldn't, but them?"

Now they were getting somewhere. "So you do trust me?"

"Pi, there's more honor in your left big toe than your entire race combined." He tipped up the canteen but then paused. "No offense."

"None taken. But we're stranded, my friend. Unless a miracle happens, by the time we get off this world, your family will be long dead." He added, "No offense."

Six finished his drink and plugged the canteen. "None taken. Sorry. Can't do it." He lifted the strap back over his head and settled it onto his shoulder, the canteen at his back. "Seriously, Pi, your people hear you call me you-know-what, it'll give away I was Ghost Corps. We both know what they'll do to me."
