Book Spotlight with a Giveaway~ Autumn Fire

Talking with author Cameron D. James....

Sources of Inspiration

A question I often get asked is whether Autumn Fire (or any of my other publications) are based on real people or real situations.  I’ve even been asked if Autumn Fire is the dramatization of how I met my partner.

I hate to shatter reader fantasies, but it’s all made up... sort of...

While no characters or plot points have been based on actual people or events, there are most definitely elements of real people and elements of real situations that have made it into the characters and plot of the book.  Dustin is gay and in the closet and Kyle is gay but claims he’s straight (despite having an obvious crush).  Anyone who’s gay or knows someone who’s gay can probably relate to these generalized character types.  So, I haven’t based these characters on people, but elements of real people I know, and some of their attitudes and experiences, have made their way (abstractly) into my characters.

I think it’s impossible for a writer to not do that.  You have to write what you know.  That’s one of the most basic writing rules.  Well, if you’re making stuff up, how do you write what you know?  You take character traits you’ve witnessed or experienced, mash them all together, and create a unique and new character.  You take events that are plausible (that you may or may not have personally experienced) and give it a serious makeover to create something unique and new.

So, while I don’t know a real Dustin and a real Kyle, and Autumn Fire is not the story of how I met my partner, I certainly see pieces of people I know in Dustin and Kyle, and I certainly see pieces of my own lived experiences (even pieces of how I met my partner) in the plot of Autumn Fire.  It’s all fiction, but there are elements of reality to it.

Dustin likes the closet. It’s warm, comfy, and dark. Who needs to be out when you can get all the anonymous sex you want via the internet? And, besides, coming out is messy and gets you nowhere--certainly not a relationship. Real gay love is fiction.

When Dustin meets CollegeJock22 for a quick blow-and-go in the university library men’s room, everything he thought he knew crumbles. He can’t get that man out of his head and will do almost anything to have him. The only problem? CollegeJock22 is even more in the closet than Dustin.

He’s in so deep he can’t even see the crack of light under the door.

Excerpt –

Hot blowjobs! Call Dave!

Dustin glanced over the phone number scrawled in faded ink, marring the grey paint. A half a dozen more “offers” decorated the wall—hookups made inherently sleazy when delivered in bathroom graffiti.

Not that he should judge, since he occupied the stall in the men’s room at the back of the library for an anonymous blowjob with some guy he met on the internet.

Dustin barely knew anything more about CollegeJock22 than he did about “Dave,” but it was still different…somehow. He’d at least seen CollegeJock22’s picture, if only a grainy crotch shot.

His thoughts crashed to a halt when the bathroom door next to him opened. Blood immediately pounded in his ears, so loud he struggled to hear the hesitant footsteps make their way to the urinal. Cold sweat spread across his forehead. He’d done his share of hookups, but never in a public place before. The danger of being caught both terrified and excited him.

Dustin stared at the sneakered foot, visible just below the stall wall, as the other man stopped at the urinal on the other side of the metal divider. He waited for the signal. Until he heard it, he didn’t know who had come in, CollegeJock22 or some random dude needing to take a piss.

He heard a zipper open, but not the telltale sound of urination. The foot shifted. The pant leg lifted, briefly flashing a white sock. The signal. Dustin flashed his own sock.

Nothing happened. Embarrassment swelled as he realized the awkward coincidence. This was not CollegeJock22.

Then the other man’s feet moved. Another wave of cold sweat peppered his skin. He’d been right. CollegeJock22. Now he just prayed the man wasn’t fat and ugly, his profile one big lie. Dustin’s breath grew shallow and his heart thudded as the man stood on the other side of the stall door.

Dustin left it unlocked, as planned.

It squeaked softly as CollegeJock22 nudged it open.

All doubts vanished. Quite simply, CollegeJock22 would be the hottest guy Dustin ever hooked up with, the rare man who actually lived up to his profile. He easily stood five foot eleven with tight golden curls peeking out from below his ball cap. His muscled chest pulled his shirt taut beneath his open jacket and his cock…a gorgeous piece of meat dangled from his open fly. The thick and semi-hard dick sprouted from a dusting of fine hair, probably at least seven inches when erect.

Release Day Blitz~ Destiny Blaine's First & Ten: Let the Games Begin

Champagne Book Group and Destiny Blaine team up to bring sports romance readers a new line of sports romance novellas

Coming to Champagne Book Group and Carnal Passions on September 2, 2013

First and Ten: Let the Games Begin
“A Swinging Gate Sports Romance”

Tagline/Logline:   In football and romance, true winners are only determined by how long their hearts stay invested in the game.

Back cover blurb:

Football superstar Kemper Kapertone is caught in a compromising position. Thrust into a media frenzy, Kemper flies across the country hoping to save a relationship now shattered beyond repair.

Tired of waiting on the sidelines, Kara Ball decides the role of jilted lover doesn’t work for her. Kara springs into action and pursues her sexy neighbor, an irresistible Dom who is twenty-seven years her senior and the object of her most recent fantasies.

Zak Stone stops by Kara’s condominium to drop off a parcel, but after the sexy seductress learns of her boyfriend’s engagement, plans change.  Soon, Kara opens up a package filled with illicit toys and the naughty ideas start churning.

While Kemper races against time to set things right, Kara invites Zak to stay overnight, hoping an evening of passion will keep him coming back for more. Fortunately for Kara, Zak is only interested in playing for keeps.

Half page teaser:

“Are you in the business of fooling around with younger women?” she asked, working a strut like he’d never seen from her before. Leaning over to pick up the handcuffs she’d deliberately—and obviously—dropped, she wiggled her behind.
He swore under his breath, wishing he could set aside his morals for one night and take her in his arms and hold her there until he taught her a few things about Domination and submission. He’d show her why a Dominant man needed a submissive woman. He’d teach her how to willingly submit and make her understand that through her submission, she would know empowerment. She would experience a new level of intimacy.
“I’ve only been with Kemper,” she told him, acting as if her revelation was the best news he’d received in over a decade.
In fact, he would’ve preferred it then if she’d confessed to promiscuous behavior.
“You’re hurting,” he reminded her, reading entirely too much into her confession. “I’m here and you have a wounded heart, a torn soul. I can’t heal you, Kara.”
How did he tell her he didn’t want to heal her? How did he explain that while he wanted to kiss it and make it better, curing her wasn’t on his mind. He wanted to claim her. And if claimed her, he fully intended to keep her.
How did a man tell a woman that?
She took a step toward him. He took one step back.  She shot him this funny little look, crossed her arms, and for a minute, he could’ve sworn she was about to strip her shirt over her head.
He willed her to stop even though his body had already reached a decision, drawn all conclusions.
One touch and she was his. One gesture to indicate she fully intended to invite him to stay and he would give in to the long awaited temptation, the attraction he could not deny.
She moved toward him again, taking three short calculated steps as if she had deliberately analyzed the best way to separate their distance just as she’d done earlier when they’d been downstairs on her sofa.
“I can’t take his place, Kara. I can’t make the hurt go away.”

“You can try.”

Welcome Author Rita Bay today

Gods & Goddesses in an Erotic Romance Series – OH MY!

My first plunge into writing an erotic story was an eye-opener. I enjoy writing in different genre, so the call for submissions at Champagne Book Group’s Carnal Passions for the “Aphrodite’s Island” series was too much of a tease to pass up.
A luxurious resort set against the backdrop of sparkling blue seas, endless sun, and white sandy beaches. When Aphrodite opened the resort, it had one goal...to give the guests the ultimate in fantasy experiences. The manager, a reclusive young woman known only by Miss 'A' has set in place rules which guide the guests in their quest for the ultimate romantic fantasy...one sensual encounter at a time. The only rules—both parties must consent to the fantasy, and pleasure is the ultimate reward.
I love history and mythology – even write history and culture posts for my webpage (http://ritabay.com). The mythology-based series seemed to be a good fit.  But what to write with a 10,000 word limit?  If the goal was to try erotic romance, then why not jump in with both feet?

Her Teddy Bare ended up as a light BDSM e-book with a chuckle. I admit to a few blushes and nervous giggles while writing it but enjoyed the experience enough to plan a sequel in which Teddy’s true identity is revealed and Diana is placed in danger by her discoveries.

Her Teddy Bare  is the third in the Aphrodite’s Island series of five and still counting. I’m in great company. Veteran erotic romance authors contributed Taming of a Sex God (Virginia Nelson) and One Too Many (Arlene Knowell), Books 1 and 2 in the series. Her Teddy Bare was followed by Wheel of Pleasure (Tara Kent) and Cruising for Love (Syrell Starr). Check out the blurb and XXcerpt for Her Teddy Bare.

After dumping her cheating fiancĂ©, Diana Harper accepts an invitation “to attend a private event at Miss A’s island retreat to experience your most secret dreams and fondest fantasies.” Miss A gives “Teddy” to Diana as an “attendant.” Despite his best efforts, Teddy isn’t a submissive and the skimpy gold thong is ridiculous on a man his size. Although she’s not a domme, Diana plays his game to see where it leads. When Teddy offers her profound passion, the best sex ever, and the prospect of love, will she take a chance on another broken heart?
Theodore Bareston will do whatever it takes to win Diana’s love, even though “whatever” includes wearing a thong and posing nude in chains when Diana’s interest in her art revives. As the sexual tension builds and passions explode, Teddy is determined to convince Diana that he is the only man for her.

Excerpt: Teddy Cooks an Omelette
“Smells delicious, Teddy.”
“Thank you, Mistress. It’s another favorite.”
He snapped his mouth shut. She could almost hear the mental curses.
“It’s about to become one of mine also, I think.” She reached underneath his arm, grazed his tight abs, and snatched a spiced tomato cube. She popped it in her mouth, closed her eyes, and chewed slowly. “Hmmmm, so good.”
Teddy groaned. She opened her eyes. His cock was peeking over the top his thong again. She stood on tip-toe and leaned close. “Be careful what you chop, Teddy.”
He managed a strangled “Yes, Mistress.”
“It’s too nice to stay indoors. Let’s dine on the terrace.”
Teddy bent over slightly at the waist as he added the cheese to the omelet, then covered the pan.
She walked toward the terrace but stopped to deliver one last dig. “Teddy.”
He tossed the spatula in the sink. “Yes, Mistress.”
“How long before you come …”
“What? I mean, pardon, Mistress?” He braced both hands on the granite countertop but managed to keep his head down.
“…to the terrace, Teddy? How long?”
“Any second, Mistress. I’m about to come any second.”
“See that you do. I’m soooo hungry.”

The” Aphrodite’s Island” series, which remains open for submissions, has its own page at Carnal Passions (http://www.carnalpassions.com/store/category.php?id_category=18) Best of all, the “Aphrodite’s Island” short stories are Quick Reads which are a bargain at $.99 each.

Scarlett Parrish talks about COMING OUT.....AS A WRITER

Coming out…

…as a writer, I mean.

The other week I ran into an acquaintance I hadn’t seen in a year or more, and the inevitable question clanged into the conversation during our “Oh my God! It’s you!” catch-up.

“So…how’s life treating you?”

I blushed, and mumbled something along the lines of “Yeah, yeah, fine.”

Better than fine actually – I’ve sold three books within a five-month period; two of those within four days of each other – but the more I brushed it off, the more my friend persisted.

Why do I get embarrassed and tongue-tied when it comes to telling people I’m a published writer? Perhaps it’s because I’m British – we just don’t brag, you know. And when you bring…whisper it…smut…into the mix, well, no thank you. I’m also reticent about publicity, which is why I failed at job interviews nine times out of ten – the whole “Sell yourself,” makes me self-conscious and more likely to screw up.

Writing’s the perfect job for me – my commute is from the bed to my office, and my uniform is pyjamas. All ‘interviews’ are conducted by email in the form of queries and no editor who rejects my work ever sees me curl up in the corner, sucking my thumb and crying all over my favourite teddy bear. Not something that would go down too well if I were interviewing for an office job, for example.

How do other writers feel about answering the question, “What do you do?”

Do you, like me, get to the point every so often where you wish you had the bottle to stand in the city square and randomly shout it to the world, daring people to roll their eyes or laugh?

For the record, I don’t. I’d be scared of the men in white coats coming to take me away…

Despite my avoidance of fleshpeoples and my desire to stay holed up in my office all day (and night), occasionally I acquire invites to go…outside. I know it’s good for me to venture out occasionally, or my skin would turn green through lack of Vitamin D.

But sometimes deadlines loom or an exciting new idea takes over my brain and I hold back from just saying so. I should own it, I know. Muttering, “Well, um, actually, I can’t…I’m kinda busy…” makes me look ashamed of whatever it is which occupies my time, but how do you strike a balance between writing time and socialising?

How hard is it for others to ‘come out’ as a writer?

And so to the blurbage – after I say thank you to Dawn for having me today.

Something doesn’t add up.

Lydia's looking for a job not a lover, but after her interview at Saint Joseph's
University, she ends up with both. There's a need for discretion despite her
bright pink hair and Doctor Spencer Flynn's candy apple red Mustang; after
all, she's an admin assistant now, he's a lecturer in applied mathematics and they work together. So they conduct their liaisons behind closed doors which is all right with Lydia; she's never experienced chemistry like it.

‘Discreet’ soon begins to look a lot like ‘secretive’ and a last-minute cancellation of a date prompts Lydia to rethink her role in the relationship.
Braced for a break-up, she's amazed when Spencer confesses the secret he's
been keeping all along. His loyalties are divided and when Lydia's attempts to hold on to his attention backfire publicly, she wonders if playing house with a mathematician is a zero-sum game...

Getting to know Author Arlene Knowell

Q: Tell us about your latest release. What inspired it?

Far From Innocent was released on August 19, 2009. In the story Rachel Kenyon finds herself heartbroken when she loses the love of her life, Green Beret, Dex McKelvy. When she learned that McKelvy was engaged, she was devastated. She’d worked for Dex’s family for a decade, but a run in with his new fiancĂ© forced Rachel out of her job. Not however, before she found herself in a brutal tell all argument with Dex.

She found a new job with an old Army buddy of her father. Rachel packed up and moved away, and even though she wasn’t happy waiting tables in a bar, it beat the hell out of being around Dex and his new fiancĂ©. But Blake Linden soon entered the picture. He was a smooth talking, even smoother looking Green Beret who wanted nothing more than to protect her from the world. And so he did, by sending a detective hired by McKelvy packing back to Denver.

As the plot thickens Dex comes in search of Rachel, he wanted her back and didn’t care who suffered in the process. Blake wasn’t willing to lose her, and was willing to die to keep her. But when the two realized they had served together long ago, in fact they’d shared a woman…the story takes a strange twist.

Realizing far too late that neither of them was willing to share Rachel, it became obvious that she had a decision to make. A very painful one.

This story is one that I’ve had in my mind for a very long time. I won’t say that it had a particular inspirational moment or person. I will say however that Blake Linden’s character is the very image of Marine that I once knew.

Q: Who are your literary heros and why?

My literary hero would have to be Elizabeth Lowell. I love reading her books. Hers is the talent that I wish I could wake up with the in the mornings. She has the ability to pull you into another world with her stories and as the reader you just don’t want to leave.

Q: Tell us five random things about yourself.

1. I have a deeply rooted fear of a bug I call a walking stick. (I have no idea of their real name, but they are literally walking sticks. LOL)

2. I have agility dogs that I still try and find time to work and compete with.

3. Time has taught me that being shy will only get you one things…Last in line.

4. I’m a patriot and I take my freedom very seriously. Because of that I am vigilant to send care packages to the front lines.

5. I love to travel and my goal is to disappear into the Caribbean and never return.

Q: When it comes to writing, are you an early bird, or a night owl?

I’m more often a night owl. Working a full time job and running a household doesn’t leave time for much more. So I find myself with my laptop sitting at the kitchen bar, (away from where my husband is watching fishing on television.) dreaming up something new to write about.

Q: How was your experience in looking for a publisher? What words of advice would you offer those novice authors who are in search of one?

I have one of those remarkable stories of searching for a publisher, I was blessed. I’d put off submitting a manuscript to a publisher for the simple reason that I was scared to death of failing. When I finally took the plunge and submitted something, within two months I had a novella contract.

So my best advice would be to face your fears head on, even if you fail at least you know that you tried. I wonder now how far I would be in my writings had I taken the chance long ago when I first started to consider it.

Do your research, consider the type of manuscript you have, and if you are willing to publish just as an ebook. I personally wanted to hold my first novella in my hands, therefore I found a publisher that would actually produce paperback copies.

Finally, I’ve looked at several types of query letters and one type always grabs me and reels me in. I like the ones that start with hook lines. Here is the hook line from the query letter for my first novella: Rachel Kenyon had never imagined herself the type to turn the head of an Army Special Forces soldier. She had not expected that in her lifetime she would have two handsome Army Green Berets in her bed. She certainly never dreamed they would both be there at the same time.

Q: What book are you reading now?

I’m reading BLUE SMOKE AND MURDER by Elizabeth Lowell

Q: If you were a world ruler and you were given a choice of 3 laws to enact, what would they be?

1. I would enact a Disability Reform act. I’m a firm believer that the root of our country’s problem is that we’ve gotten lazy. Facts are that if you are able to work in you flower beds, drive to town seven or eight days a week and carry cases of beer from the store then there is a job out there that you can do. We don’t necessarily need healthcare reform; we need someone to take the “easy button” away.

2. I would love to enact a law that relates to the old saying, “If it’s good enough for the goose it’s good enough for the gander.” If you are found guilty of a gruesome crime, then you should be punished by the same means. I just makes me mad to hear about some child killer in prison who is appealing his sentence because he doesn’t think lethal injections are humane. How can a person rape, bludgeon to death and torture their victims and honestly expect to be treated humanely? I say lock them in a sound proof room with their victim’s family for 10 minutes, and then humanely punish what’s left.

3. My final law would be for the protection of animals. I’m not a “fly hugger”, but I do believe that there should be a sever punishment for people who are cruel to animals. I think the Chinese fur trade that uses dogs, cats and other domestic animals is insane. I understand that fur is fur, but putting animals to death by drowning, and anal electrical shock just makes me cringe. That exists you know? They do it that way as not to harm the fur. Maybe those cruel people need a water hose down their throat, or an electrical cord up their butt.

Q: If your muse were to talk behind your back, what secrets would he/she tell?

My muse would never talk, I know just as much about her! But I’m pretty much an open book, I don’t have many secrets. But like any best friend, she knows all the trash. So she could easily name names, dates and times.

Q: If you were a Superhero, would you wear tights and a cape?

If I wore tights, I’d need a cape! No seriously, I think I would. Then I would set my sights on Superman and we’d find out once and for all if he is really faster than a speeding bullet because I could certainly leap his tall building in a single bound.

Q: You are told you have to meet one paranormal creature, no safeguards, what do you choose? What do you bring with you?

Oh Gosh, I really don’t get into all the sci-fi creatures, vamps, werewolves and such. I will say however, that I’m fascinated with true paranormal activity in forms of haunting and possessions. My grand parent’s house was haunted when I was a little girl and it fueled my interest in those things. (There is nothing like doors opening and closing of their own accord.) So If I had to meet a paranormal creature it would be Sara Winchester. (Creator of the bizarre Winchester mansion.) I’m not sure what I’d like to have with me, maybe a cardiologist to revive me from the heart attack I’d have from seeing her. Maybe a Bible or a medium to help her escape whatever is keeping her in that mansion.

Q: You have to ask a fictional character out on a date—who would you ask and what would you do together?

I think I would like the meet the character Bobby Lee Swagger, who is the leading character from the movie “Shooter” starring Mark Wahlberg. He’s just a sexy kind of guy; he’s reserve, brilliant and a force to be reckoned with if you piss him off.

What would we do? Well let’s see, on a date with a Marine sniper, who is drop dead gorgeous, sexy to the bone and likes to be “away from the hustle and bustle”. I’d first want him to teach me to shoot. I’ve learned that those kinds of guys like to showcase their skills. Then I’d like to hear a few of those amazing shot stories that all snipers have. If I know me, and I do….I’ll be all “hot and bothered” by the stories. So I’m hoping and praying that next part of this date would not be welcome on a PG blog!

“Tell me soldier, do you do that to all the girls or am I getting special treatment?”

Her body’s reaction to him was confusing. She squirmed slightly, wishing the sudden wetness between her legs would evaporate. It did not.

He teasingly snapped his very white teeth at her. “You have no idea how special I can treat you.” She didn’t budge. She’d learned from the other girls that the tips got bigger if the dicks got hard. She looked slowly down toward the bulging package between his legs. Searing heat shot through her body, a feeling of demand, and an overwhelming desire to touch him. An audible breath escaped him as if he noticed that she’d held a steady gaze far too long to just be working toward a tip.

She looked back to his eyes. “Oh, I have a vivid imagination.”

“I bet you do.”

“What can I get you to drink?” she asked. “Something tells me that you could easily get me into trouble.”

“You’re a tease,” he laughed.

“You caught me.” She laughed along with him as she lightly rested her hip against his arm and scanned the faces of his buddies. “What can I get for you guys?”

His friends wanted a pitcher of beer but his reply didn’t shock her—he wanted a Jack and Coke with her as a chaser.

"Straight up?” she asked with a wide, teasing smile.

“Absolutely.”

She ordered up the pitcher of beer, mugs and a Jack and Coke and danced her way back with their drinks. She noted Linden never took his eyes off her. She had a hard time keeping hers off him. What were the chances that this big hunk of sexual lure would be a Green Beret? It seemed that there would always be something to remind her of Dex. As a desire to be near Linden coaxed her back around to his side of the table she drew his hat from where he had it tucked and looked at the insignia on his uniform.

“5th Special Forces Group.”

He smiled. “You know your insignia.”

“My dad was an Army guy. We actually lived here for a while when I was a little girl.”

His eyes flowed over her body, touching all the sultry spots as he admired her.

She laughed and spun his hat around the tip of a finger. “May I?” she asked as she held it forth in question.

“Be my guest. My cover’s gotta look better on you than on me.”

She pulled it on over her braided hair and gave him a mock salute.

“You grew up in the Army and you’re going to tell me that some Hooah didn’t snatch you up?”

“There was one,” she said with more ease than she’d expected. “But he preferred platinum blondes with big… eyes.”

He nodded in confirmation. “Was he blind or just stupid?”

She carefully adjusted his beret on her head, intentionally avoiding his question. “It’s a little big, but I like the color. Excuse me, someone just called me.”

His eyelids went to half-mast. “Can I do that too?”

“Sure thing, guys. Just call my name if you need something before I get back to your table,” she said, looking straight into Linden ’s green eyes though she addressed all the men at the table.

“What if you are what I need?” he asked with a sexy smile as she walked away.

She looked back. “Do you think you need me more than the other men here say they need me?”

The smile on her face was evidence that she certainly hoped he did. Even if he wasn’t the staying kind of guy, and she suspected he wasn’t, he would be a wonderful way to cover the recurring memories of the last sexual experience she’d had.

He pivoted his chair around on the hardwood floor, “What do you think?” he asked glancing down at his hard shaft.

Rachel looked down at the bulge and mentally noted that it occupied a great length of space. She swallowed hard but her clit throbbed harder. She sauntered back. “That could take a while.”

“Show me,” he begged.
