Talking with author Cynthia Sax.....

Has there been any characters that started off as supporting characters, but then developed into a more prominent character?

Cynthia Sax: Almost all of my minor characters have a potential to be heroes or heroines in their own stories. Sinful Rewards is a love triangle. Bee is torn between a billionaire with a dark secret and a bad boy biker. One of these hunks won’t find love. I’d love to write a story around him.

When and where do you like to write? Are there any favourite places you like to go?

Cynthia Sax: I prefer to write fresh words every morning (when I’m able). I dream of my story at night and wake up inspired, ready to write. I face a blank wall when I write. The lack of distractions allows me to fully focus on my story. I’d love to write on the deck of a cruise ship, overlooking the sea.

Who has been the biggest influence in your writing?

Cynthia Sax:  Before I met my dear wonderful hubby, I didn’t truly believe in love (and definitely not love at first sight) and I didn’t have a solid understanding of what a lasting, loving relationship consisted of.  There’s a bit of him in every hero I write.

What has been the defining moment in your career that made you think “Yes, I am now a writer!”?

Cynthia Sax: When I first received money for one of my stories. I was a journalist for a daily and a weekly newspaper in high school. I didn’t realize that someone would pay me for writing! It was a crazy, life-changing concept.

How do you like to relax after a day writing?

Cynthia Sax: Writing is my relaxation. I’ll always be a reader first though. There’s nothing like escaping into another world, living another living, going places, doing things, meeting people I never could in the real world.

If a movie or TV production company chose to produce your books into a series of shows or movies, who would your ideal cast be?

Cynthia Sax: For Sinful Rewards, I’d love Natalie Portman to play Bee. I understand she’s vertically challenged also so she would sympathize with Bee’s challenges. Nicolas’ role could be played by Diego Boneta, the Latino heartthrob in Pretty Little Liars. Nicolas has the same gorgeously thick dark wavy hair. Hawke is a tough role to cast. How about Hafthor Julius Bjornsson aka The Mountain from Game Of Thrones? Although Hawke has a much sweeter personality, he has the same size and not-so-handsome face.

How much of your own personality bleeds into your characters?

Cynthia Sax:  Part of the fun of writing is NOT being ourselves, exploring views of the world we wouldn’t necessarily hold. For example: I’m not overly concerned about my appearance yet Bee, the heroine in Sinful Rewards, is a fashionista. I’m not a great cook. She is.

BUT the emotion is real. I know what it is like not to fit in. I know what it is like to be responsible for other people, to not have the luxury of thinking only about myself when making life decisions.

If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing?

Cynthia Sax: Before I wrote full time (thanks to the dear wonderful hubby covering the bills), I was in business, new product development to be specific, and I loved it. There’s a reason I write about billionaire executives. I spent a lot of time in the boardroom (and not in a sexy way – though some of the executives I worked for were pretty darn hunky – grins). There’s a reason I used to call those men ‘Kings of the universe’. Power rolled off their suit-clad shoulders in heavy waves.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Cynthia Sax: I write contemporary, SciFi and paranormal erotic romances for Avon Impulse, Ellora’s Cave, Loose Id and Changeling Press. I’m happily married to a wonderful man. We fell in love at first sight (I know! I didn’t believe in love at first sight until it happened to me) and 20 plus years later, we’re still deliciously happy.

What is your book(s) about?

Cynthia Sax: Sinful Rewards is a sizzling love triangle between Bee—a new grad, Nicolas—a billionaire with a dark secret, and Hawke—a tattooed bad boy biker. I always wanted to write a love triangle (though when Bee made her choice, it destroyed me – I love both of the heroes so much) and was thrilled to finally have the pages (1,200 in total) to tell the story properly.

What are you currently working on?

Cynthia Sax: Sinful Rewards is a love triangle, which means one hero was unsuccessful in love. Okay, that isn’t a proper description. He was DEVASTATED, completely destroyed. He believes the better man won the girl, that he’s unworthy of lasting love, that he will spend his life alone. I cried.

How long did it take you to get your rough draft finished on your latest release?

Cynthia Sax: For my contemporaries, I can write a very fast draft of my novellas (25,000 words or 100 pages) in one crazy week. That’s 14 hours a day of writing during the full 7 days. My happy place is 2,500 words a day however. That’s a comfortable pace for me.

I normally have 7 or 8 drafts before I submit my stories to my publishers. The first draft takes the longest time. Then I add layers with each subsequent draft.

Is there anything you will never write about?

Cynthia Sax: When I was exploring with my writing, I wrote a straight erotica with no happy romance ending. I enjoy reading erotica and I had an exciting story idea. I really didn’t like having that story published (and thankfully it is no longer available). I like my happy endings. I like leaving the reader with a happy feeling. It felt a little too dirty for me but it was a great learning experience. I now know I’m an erotic ROMANCE writer. There’s no other genre for me.

What was the hardest part of writing your book(s)?

Cynthia Sax: Sinful Rewards is a 12 novella serial. I lived in this world, with Bee, Nicolas and Hawke, for 1,200 pages. Ending this serial was like moving away from a beloved home, from dear friends. It was very tough.

If you could sit down with any author dead or alive who would it be?

Cynthia Sax: Sinful Rewards is a 12 novella serial. Serials have been enjoyed by readers for centuries. I’d love to sit down with Charles Dickens and ask him how he wrote his serials. I understand that he tweaked David Copperfield when he received reader feedback. How fast did he incorporate this feedback? Was it in the next monthly installment?

Do you keep a notebook near your for when new ideas pop into your head?

Cynthia Sax: I do! I also keep a notebook in the bathroom. When I have a story idea in the middle of the night, I’ll rush into the bathroom, close the door and turn on the lights. This way, I don’t disturb the hard working and super understanding hubby.

If you write a series do you reread your previous books before you begin the new one?

Cynthia Sax: I prefer to write all of a series or a serial in a row. Sinful Rewards is completely written, all 12 parts (yes, I know who Bee ends up with but no, I’m not telling – grins). I like to stay in the same world, to live in the setting with the characters.  Every scene, every character, every significant event in my stories change, at the very least, three things in the future. It’s a very complex process.

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?

Cynthia Sax: I wrote Sinful Rewards as a serial because this was the only format it could be written in. Every novella is a new sexual challenge for Bee, our heroine. Avon has agreed that every novella will be priced at a crazy low 99 cents US (or less!). That’s less than the price of a convenience store chocolate bar. All 12 novellas are already written and will be published. Make Sinful Rewards YOUR sinful reward for the year. You deserve it!

Award-winning author Shelley Adina wrote her first teen novel when she was 13. It was rejected by the literary publisher to whom she sent it, but he did say she knew how to tell a story. That was enough to keep her going through the rest of her adolescence, a career, a move to another country, a B.A. in Literature, an M.F.A. in Writing Popular Fiction, and countless manuscript pages. Between books, Shelley loves traveling, playing the piano and Celtic harp, watching movies, and making period costumes.

Colleen Collins

Colleen Collins is an award-winning author who’s written several dozen novels for Harlequin and Dorchester, including two indie-published mysteries, The Ungrateful Dead and its sequel, The Zen Man, as well as three nonfiction indie books, Secrets of a Real-Life Female Private Eye, How Do Private Eyes Do That? and How to Write a Dick: A Guide for Writing Fictional Sleuths from a Couple of Real-Life Sleuths (the latter co-authored with Shaun Kaufman).
