By 4042 CE, the Hierophant and his Church have risen to political dominance with his cannibalistic army of genetically modified humans: martyrs. In an era when mankind's intergenerational cold wars against their long-lived predators seem close to running hot, the Holy Family is poised on the verge of complete planetary control. It will take a miracle to save humanity from extinction.

It will also take a miracle to resurrect the wife of 331-year-old General Dominia di Mephitoli, who defects during martyr year 1997 AL in search of Lazarus, the one man rumored to bring life to the dead. With the Hierophant's Project Black Sun looming over her head, she has little choice but to believe this Lazarus is really all her new friends say he is--assuming he exists at all--and that these companions of hers are really able to help her. From the foulmouthed Japanese prostitute with a few secrets of her own to the outright sapient dog who seems to judge every move, they don't inspire a lot of confidence, but the General has to take the help she can get.

After all, Dominia is no ordinary martyr. She is THE HIEROPHANT'S DAUGHTER, and her Father won't let her switch sides without a fight. Not when she still has so much to learn.

The dystopic first entry of an epic cyberpunk trilogy, THE HIEROPHANT’S DAUGHTER is a horror/sci-fi adventure sure to delight and inspire adult readers of all stripes.

Excerpt:

The Flight of the Governess

The Disgraced Governess of the United Front was blind in her right eye. Was that blood in the left, or was it damaged, too? The crash ringing in her ears kept her from thinking straight. Of course her left eye still worked: it worked well enough to prevent her from careening into the trees through which she plunged. Yet, for the tinted flecks of reality sometimes twinkling between crimson streaks, she could only imagine her total blindness with existential horror. Would the protein heal the damage? How severely was her left eye wounded? What about the one she knew to be blind—was it salvageable? Ichigawa could check, if she ever made it to the shore.

She couldn’t afford to think that way. It was a matter of “when,” not of “if.” She would never succumb. Neither could car accident, nor baying hounds, nor the Hierophant himself keep her from her goal. She had fourteen miles to the ship that would whisk her across the Pacific and deliver her to the relative safety of the Risen Sun. Then the Lazarene ceremony would be less than a week away. Cassandra’s diamond beat against her heart to pump it into double time, and with each double beat, she thought of her wife (smiling, laughing, weeping when she thought herself alone) and ran faster. A lucky thing the Governess wasn’t human! Though, had she remained human, she’d have died three centuries ago in some ghetto if she’d lived past twenty without becoming supper. Might have been the easier fate, or so she lamented each time her mind replayed the crash of the passenger-laden tanque at fifth gear against the side of their small car. How much she might have avoided!

WRITERS WRITE... WRITING PARTNERS FEUD ~ HAPPY THANKSGIVING

THANKSGIVING’S ROMANTIC BLESSINGS
By: Angelica Hart and Zi

We are thankful for words that flow
Creating muscle-tight heroes, oh oh
And lovely heroines so sexy and bold
A sensual love story’s bound to unfold
It is our need to give you a savory taste
Of passion’s pinnacle at a slow pace
Lips so rough against a mouth that quivers
Arms that embrace to bring you shivers
Characters entwine as hearts double-beat
Building and building to an incredible heat
We are grateful if you become breathless
As a character utters, oh yes, yes, yes
A strong hand must fondle and explore
As deep desires grow and searing senses soar
Clothes peel away, leaving nature’s allure
And one offers as the other pleads for more
Oh, we so appreciate delivering pull and tug
Sexual tension that becomes a seductive drug
A story of fantasy might be your cuppa tea
Or does a space captain bring you pure glee
Something contemporary might be the key
Or is it the erotic that sets your heart free
No matter the genre, no matter the plot or tome
How grateful we are that you bring our story home
But most of all it is you the reader we appreciate most

Thank you for letting us be your romantic literary host

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom.
Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon.
They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

~ by Karen Sunde ~

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself
But if your love and must needs have desires,
Let these be your desires:
• To melt and be like a running brook
• That sings its melody to the night.
• To know the pain of too much tenderness.
• To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
• And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
• To wake at dawn with a winged heart
• And give thanks for another day of loving;
• To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
• To return home at eventide with gratitude;
• And then to sleep with a prayer
• For the beloved in your heart
• And a song of praise upon your lips.
~ by Gibran Kahlil Gibran ~

Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it .. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
~ by The Holy Bible, New International Version Ephesians 5:25-33 ~

Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.

WRITERS WRITE... WRITING PARTNERS FEUD ~ Where's the Cookies?

The creation of intellectual properties is a personal thing coming from private places, which makes us feel unique in our collaboration. First being two people sharing a common vision, second being gender different, and third, and probably most important, both being stubborn minded. We have been asked how do we make this partnership work. At which we roar with laughter, wondering does it really? Then realizing that, in fact, it does because we are both quirky and have abided by certain rules.

Rule One: Write for the audience.
Rule Two: Have something to say.
Rule Three: Remember rule one!
Rule Four: Never fight to win.
Rule Five: Fight for rule one.

We have been writing this column about some of the idiosyncratic processes we go through daily. It is a fly on the wall insight which shows our eclectic sense of humor and our passion to create. We both want to be learning machines and try every single day to be better.

A: Do you think they are going to believe that dribble? (Pauses) You called me a machine?! (She hurls a 8.5 x 11 crumbled scrap at him)
Z: (In perfect soccer goalie defense he bats it away) Maybe...there is a lot of truth in it. (He provides the puppy-dog eyes hoping to sway)
A: There's a lot truth in that I'm a machine?! Oh go 'way... (says with a grin) you know that doesn't work.
Z: Finnne! Can you take a picture and maybe we can post it right here? Maybe others will be puppy-dog eye moved. Plllllleeeeasssse.
A: I can't believe that you can write moving love scenes while acting like a bowel movement!
Z: That's pretty harsh! (Showing the O-lipped expression)
A: You're right. I'm sorry. (Her turn to pull on the puppy-dog eye look...hers worked)

Later that day, after peanut butter and raisin sandwiches, which followed a plot sketching session where Angelica insisted that the gluteus maximus of our hero be of such a nature that a quarter could bounce a foot high off of it. Zi was arguing for two feet.

A: Sex... just sex.
Z: What? (Zi flashes the O-eyed look, whites around green) You said, sex!
A: Did not! (Everyone knows the flash to pout a child can do, Angelica has channeled everyone of those children)
Z: Did too! Sex...sex...sex! Freudian moment? Slip often? How was your fall...short? My spring was!
A: Hmmm...possibly, (Ignoring his humor and remaining serious or as serious as she possibly could feign) trying to figure out how close to the beginning we should have the hero and heroine have sex.
Z: Sex...sex...sex! (He grabs a blue Sharpie, prints those three letters and tapes it to the top of the Keith Primeau picture then does another and begins to do the happy river dance. The second paper is taped to his belt buckle)
A: (Spontaneously popping a snot-bubble from laughter she uses his Theodore stuffed animal to mop the matter, realizes that was cold and runs to the kitchen to provide the chipmunk a ho-s bath. Returns more collected, offers the damp-tushed chipmunk to Zi and retorts) Show some composure.
Z: (The pre-nocturnal enuresis of the chipmunk all happened unbeknownst to Zi. He stares with a quirky, I-ain't-touching-that look, and gestures for her to return Theodore to his bandstand) Our plan is usually to allow a relationship to grow. (He feels obligated to respond to sex...sex...sex!)
A: We are starting a new book, should we rethink this? Beginnings are important, wouldn't a nice romp be a grand hook? (Angelica's face befell that elevated eyebrow and aren't I a genius look)
Z: Have you been drinking the left-over St. Patrick's grog?
A: That hook's just a thought. Stories, whether it is a shorty-shorty or a novella or a mega-break-your-foot-if-it-falls-saga, all start at the beginning with every intention to have an ending. Let me read what I thought we write about for today’s blog... (Opens a file)

Excitement underscores every new beginning, totally infusing it with possibilities, yet there could also be the twitter of nervousness. After all, the unknown lurks like a slithering centipede, quick and quiet. At least that is the feeling one might experience when starting a new book. No matter the amount of preparation, plan or outlining an author can never be fully prepared for the snares and rabbit trails of a plot.

The first thought, the first line, the first paragraph should be the ultimate temptation for a reader. It is the hook that should make someone not just want to continue but need to continue. Of course, the entire book should pull the reader along but not gently, not timidly but with the launch and gusto of a rollercoaster ride, but one that starts at the precipice rather than a slow ride uphill. Later in the story you can have that drag, for the reader needs an opportunity to get their breath back, to feel comforted that the story follows reasonable lines, allowing room for the imagination to tug at their sensibilities, prompting questions about the possible outcome.

In romance novels there is that added element of intimacy, the meeting of hero and heroine that should include sparks, sometimes of a conflictive nature, sometimes of just a physical responses of instant attraction, instant chemistry. Which brings us to the point of how close to the beginning of a story should the hero and heroine meet?

Z: We're back to that?
A: I'm talking about the initial meeting, not sex.
Z: Just like a relationship should grow, so should the story. The meeting happens when all the elements are in place.
A: Hmmm, I'm no longer sure.
Z: We've been here, done this, and redone it. A good steak gets ruined if you cook it too long.
A: Mmmm, steak, baked potato, crispy salad and onion rings. Is it lunch yet?
Z: It's 9 a.m. What's with all the rethinking?
A: Starting a new book has me thinking because new beginnings often brings change.
Z: To quote Alphonse Karr, "The more things change, the more they are the same."
A: So the questions of the day are, should sex be closer to the beginning of a story? Should the hero and heroine meet on the first few pages? Should there be change for change sake? Should Angelica have steak for lunch and cookies for desert, or should she stick to her diet?
Z: The true answer is...whatever makes the reader want to turn the page.
A: Sometimes, you are a genius!
Z: Only...sometimes....
A: (Doesn't respond for she is in the kitchen looking for cookies)

WRITERS WRITE... WRITING PARTNERS FEUD ~ Review NEW PRINTS IN OLD CALICO by Jennifer Lynn

From our alter-egos

From the desk of ~
DONA PENZA TATTLE, ESQ.
AND
ASSOCIATE WRYE BALDERDASH

Greetings!

Wrye is startled by the flying apple aimed at him. “Catch!” Tattle says.  “This is aperfect month for making apple pies and celebrating a new Champagne Books Group review."

Nabbing the apple from the air as if it's a football, he sneezes as if allergic. "Don’t we need more than one for baking?”

"We’re stopping at the bakery for the pie. That’s just for a snack during our Love of Literature Leap Review!”

He shrugs and quips, “How do you make an apple turnover?”

“Huh?”

“Push it downhill.”

He hoots at his lame joke as they take off.

NEW PRINTS IN OLD CALICO by Jennifer Lynn, a paranormal time travel romance

“What does a modern day librarian do when she finds herself suddenly transported from New York City to a small 1880ish western town?” asks Wrye as they stroll over boardwalks and peek into a saloon.

“I’d think, looney bin here I come,” says Tattle, “but not Amanda Bradshaw. She immediately recognizes her predicament and slips into her new role as a school teacher as if born to it. Somehow she feels at home in both the time period and place. It doesn’t stop her, though, from trying to figure out just how she ended up in the stagecoach that had brought her to the town.” Tattle looks pensive as thoughts swirl. “Talk about being coooonnnfused! The town’s people were expecting a new teacher. They had a room already rented for her at Dory’s, and Amanda had arrived with a trunk full of perfectly fitting clothes.”

“It was as if someone had planned it out deliberate-like,” Wrye says with an elaborate drawl. “But who? Why? Not having any answers, Amanda begins her new life. Befriended by the saloon owner Lil, she is quickly clued into the everyday world of the old west.”

“But it’s the handsome, ever smiling Sheriff Austen Riley who seems devoted to her, even warning her about the villainous Matt Mallory. Only Matt has a roughish charm she can’t deny, and a way of making her knees knock and heart pound. He seems equally smitten by her but there is something mysterious about him. Plus, she needs to figure out the source of his dark reputation, especially considering the entire town believes it.” Tattle fans herself and applies a twang to her speech. “Poor thing, how’s she gonna tell the plum mean ole villain from the simple folks with hearts of gold.”

Wrye examines the plot. “Matt manipulates circumstances which brings Amanda to his ranch, where he nurses her sprained ankle and where she gets to meet his five year old daughter, Molly. Through flirting and fights and sentimental moments, Amanda finds herself falling for Matt. Only, nothing is as it appears and lethal danger soon stalks them both.”

“Will any of them survive or will fate once again whisk her to another time and place?”

“Wow! Talk about a compelling story,” Wrye offers. “Jennifer Lynn takes the reader on a heart-pounding ride of intrigue and romance. Her writing style is clean and addictive while her plot turns keep you wanting more and more.”

“I adore her characters,” adds Tattle. “They are complex and alluring. The true rogue turns out to be darker than tar, the secondary characters utterly colorful and intriguing, while Amanda is sophisticated yet fits easily into the homespun backdrop. I, also, especially like the dialogue that is quick, snappy and realistic. This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Jennifer Lynn and it won’t be the last. She is a prolific talent I look forward to following in the years to come.”

As an aside, we apologize for being gone for a few months, but we’re back and ready to gobble up more CBG books.

Until next time, keep reading!

WRITERS WRITE... WRITING PARTNERS FEUD ~ BOOK EXCERPT

EXCERPT FROM LOVE LETTERS

Rich’s home wasn’t large, more of a cottage with lots of exposed cedar, large windows, and a triple slider lining the back wall which looked onto a deck and a view of the bay. Normally with humid weather, he’d have the air conditioner running, but the humidity was down and the bay breeze brought its scented briskness into the house.

The furnishings were simple, lots of oak, comfortable chairs and floor to ceiling bookcases that held his collection of westerns. There were hardbacks, paperback, videos, DVD’s with a few books and movies on John Wayne and Roy Rogers thrown into the mix. There were also twin curio cabinets tucked into opposite corners, both holding a collection of horses made of wood, stone, marble, clay, porcelain, and various other materials. The gifts were given to him by his parents for he had once asked for a pony, and being unable to house such a pet in the city, they thought this an apt substituted, and Rich never had the heart to tell him he had no passion for them.

They both took showers, changed into clean clothes, he shorts, T-shirt and white socks that absorbs the ointment he liberally lathered on his raw feet. She wore a wrinkled, sunflower yellow sundress she had in the gym bag she had in her car, and it was close to being all she had left. Afterward, Lauren roamed the house, liking the open kitchen with its clean gray granite counters, lack of clutter so unlike her own semi-organized stacks of paraphernalia. She also liked the way it opened right up to the living area. It was basically one room with a bedroom suite off to the left, a pantry, laundry area and second bedroom and bath off to the right. A staircase led to a loft, which housed a pool table, more bookshelves and books and a computer.

Rich watched her take it in with an amused expression. It was so like her to simply explore, and he didn’t say anything just took out a pitcher of iced tea, he had made earlier that day, the tea being from an herbal blend she had given him a few days back. “Don’t like caffeine,” she said. “Have it on hand when I come over.” She had said it with that air of knowing she’d be invited to his home, or perhaps she had anticipated just showing up.

They hadn’t known each other all that long yet it somehow seemed as if it she had been there for so very long, a shadow of wistfulness, a dream that he thought would never take hold. He had once been the epitome of rawness, lust, fury and fear, all reigned in, tight, controlled yet the yearning was there, dogging him, tempting him. The fear was one of the emotions that he no longer wanted or needed, but the lust and fury roared inside, seeking release. Yet neither provided the potential for a relationship. Lust he could get anywhere, and fury couldn’t be part of who he was except in the way of abandon, a place to let go and simply be wild. With Lauren, he knew he could experience both and something more, that rare emotion of connecting, of being in love.

“I like,” she said, pressing open the sliders, and stepping onto the deck.

“You can stay as long as you need,” he said, knowing it would take time to rebuild from the fire.

She didn’t respond, simply held out her arms as if welcoming the air and scents, her eyes closing as she tilted her head back. The skimpy sundress fluttered against her lean, tight body, outlining the fullness of her breasts, of her turgid nipples, the flatness of her stomach, and molding her thighs. The wind took the spikiness from her hair, leaving it simply untamed, just like her. She showed little residual affects from what they had been through, no shock, no tears at the loss of all her treasurers. He suspected the emotions hadn’t taken hold, that for some there was numbness.

Turning back, she smiled at him. “I’m just fine, you know.”

It was as if she had read his mind. He handed her the tea, the ice clinking against frosted glass. “It will probably hit you later. Everyone reacts differently after losing all their memorabilia, everything they cherished.”

She took the glass, sipped the tea, and offered a small salute indicating it was good. As if moving to music, she swayed, shoulders moving, hips rolling. She was often like that, never quite still, as if songs sprung up around her and she needed to move to the melody only she could hear. “I lost nothing.” She placed both hands against her heart. Everything’s in here, every memory, everything precious, the true loss came when I lost my parents, my grandmother. Everything else is just things, accumulations that gather and, yes, prompt sweet remembrances, but love can’t be contained in a picture frame, or a memento. It’s inside us. What’s left of those I love I still have, and what I need, what I want, what matters I can find in those I love, and…” Taking his drink, she put it down on a nearby table, adding her own, and then leaned up against him, her back to his front, wrapping his arms around her. “… and hopefully you will be part of what I need, what I want, what matters.”

“I…”

“Shh,” she said, “Be sure before you say anything. Just hold me.”

And he did, curling her up against him, burying his face against her neck, experiencing a swell of emotion that seemed alien yet what he craved. He could have lost her tonight. The fire could have consumed them both. It made life sweeter, this moment with her all the more precious. He tasted her neck with tender kisses. Yes, he loved her, he knew this, he wanted to say it, wasn’t sure of the timing, wasn’t sure of anything but that this was right, certain, good. Her message her been pure and blunt as always, but her speech held other components he hadn’t heard before. Pain swelled in its simplicity. She lost and grieved. She understood the difference between what was real and important and what could be let go.

Her hands lifted, fingers threading his hair as she pulled him closer, her body tightening in response to his teasing mouth. His arms had been about her waist, but now his hands slipped up over that slenderness and cupped each breasts, not squeezing, not massaging, just seeming to test the heaviness, enjoy the feel.

She moaned, her body growing limp and languid, wanting more, knowing she’d hold back, but wishing to stay that decision just a bit longer. Still, she wouldn’t indulge, not just yet. Partly because she intended to honor her self-imposed vow, and partly because anticipation held its own tantalization. Savoring the bourgeoning love was important to her. Taking it slow and steady was part of her progression. There had been a time of wild, a time of experience for the sake of experience, and a time of simply running, not wanting to feel, not wanting to ever let anyone too close, for in that closeness she risked loss. Soon she came to realize not risking love, emotion, life, everything that meant something left one cold and frozen. The risk was better, the heat better, the plowing through and finding one’s way, better. However, she now needed the real, no more settling just for the jolt, the lust, the same ole, same ole experience, she wanted forever, and she wanted love, the way she had seen her parents love.

Turning in his bear-like embrace, she lifted her face, touching his, outlining the scar with one fingertip, following that same path with kisses to the pink pucker of his scarit, and then to his unmarred cheek, and then to his mouth, toying with his lips, never losing his gaze, never losing the sway she set in motion to that soundless music, and somehow he began to hear it, only he suspected it was simply the rhythm of their hearts. The kiss grew, their tongues met, performed an erotic waltz, slow, swirling, and then their mouths clamped in a tango of lust, the kiss full and endless.

The world disappeared.

The wind disappeared.

Sound disappeared.

Leaving just the ebb and flow of the other, giving and taking.

Leaving just the kiss.

She was the first to pull free, to not let that kiss take them afar, to that place one could not return. Yet, she did not leave his embrace. Instead, they swayed in the semblance of dance, not real dance but that soul-partnering, where passion and love co-existed.

Rich never felt anything more perfect. He had let go of his fear of fire when she engulfed his fiery penis within her mouth, and again when he carried her to safety from the encroaching flames. He let go of the emptiness of emotionless lust the moment she came into his world. He let go of anger, the combatant of his fear, the instant he understood he loved her. All that was left was to let go of the words, to simply tell her.

Be sure, she had said. He was but he held back, not quite understanding why, perhaps because he wanted her love in return? She acted as if this were a possibility but also acted as if that would only happen if she knew she was loved first. It left uncertainty. Could he live with that uncertainty? He had run into fires without consideration to whether or not he’d ever survive yet he hesitated in this. And he suddenly comprehended that he had never said I love you before without being intoxicated, and even then it was more of a platitude, a luv ya. He needed her to understand the truth, the fullness of his emotion, and the lasting value of those words, they were redeemable, true, and real. He wouldn’t go away. He was here to stay. She was his forever. Was she ready to accept that?

Tell her he told himself. Show her. The ringing phone took the opportunity away. He moved away from her reluctantly, holding her eyes as he flipped open his cell. Listened, and then, “Okay, I’ll be there.”

“Work,” he said, cupping her cheek, falling into her, never wanting to leave her. “You’ll be safe here.”

She smiled. “I know.”

He kissed her again, this time quickly, sensing she wanted to say something more, wanted to tease and joke, but serious had somehow taken the moment, and they left it stay.

Lauren smiled at the door as he walked out, making certain he was gone before she said, “You’re my forever, Rich Longar.” And then amending, “Aren’t you?”
