Synopsis

Ethan is a photographer who loves the interplay of light and shadow in his work and what it reveals. While working on his latest project, he finds himself at an abandoned church after nightfall. Lured by the prospect of capturing something unique with his camera, he ventures inside.

What Ethan discovers in that forgotten place is not what he expected. Instead of sights unseen for decades, Ethan finds a man -- bleeding, hurt, and in need of help.

What Ethan doesn’t know is that he isn’t freeing an ordinary man, but an ancient vampire.

Through a haze of blood and violence, Ethan will have to come to terms with a situation nothing could have ever prepared him for. Auris drinks blood and deals death with ease, but Ethan soon discovers that the vampire is not just a monster. Auris is more, so much more. As if it were illuminated with a camera flash, Ethan can almost see himself and Auris have a shared future. Yet, those who tried destroying Auris once will stop at nothing to do so again.

Content Warnings: Illuminated (Vampire Tales 1) contains scenes of violence, murder, kidnapping, and torture that may be triggers for some readers.

I felt the cold fingers of the changing season reach across the café’s outdoor terrace and right up my spine. The warm fall day drew to a close with the trees all along the coast colored in vermilion and gold, and darkness rolled in with the tide, the sky above pretty as pulped roses.

“Need another?” said the very attentive server. Her eyes were ocean blue, and her golden earrings caught the fading light slanting in from across the water. She wore a surgical mask like most of the staff in the region I’d come across, even though they were no longer mandatory. “You seem to inhale them. You know that might cost you sleep, right?”

I smiled back at her and finished the last of my latte. “I always inhale great coffee, but this will have to be my last. I like to work at night.”

True enough, even if I had captured mostly sunlight and shadows, leaves and people today, not my normal fare. The touristy charm of the place had simply lured me in. That all the cafés I found here had great service, view, and coffee didn’t help me regain my work attitude.

She looked me up and down, no doubt taking in my slightly over shoulder-length caramel brown hair, the piercing blue eyes most people liked to comment on, and -- last but not least -- my pseudo-geeky Schrödinger’s Cat tee.

“My mother would tell you that a good boy like yourself should be in bed at night. What do you do?”

I laughed and tugged a strand of my hair back behind my ear. “I’m a photographer, and I like editing when it’s dark out. Just a night owl thing. Could I get the check, please?” This was beginning to feel more and more like a vacation, even though I was working. I wanted abandoned places for my next exhibition, and if you didn’t mind a bit of driving, this area had plenty.

“Wow, an artist. You’re the first in Brightam this season, or at least my first. Be right back.” She winked at me.

I nodded, and she took my empty glass and walked away.

My bag sat on the chair to my right. I dug for my notebook and phone. My slightly battered but trusty notebook contained my longhand list of places I wanted to go see. I unwound the elastic that held the notebook closed and checked the list I’d bookmarked with an old receipt for a bagel and coffee against a map on my phone to see if I could still get something done today. If I didn’t, this really would be a vacation day, and I was firmly not on vacation. Besides, I was sure some lowlight photos might add a creepy aspect to my work people often told me was there to begin with, even if I never saw it.

The seventh item on my list was a church that had been abandoned for decades, complete with a garden of headstones surrounding it, and it was only a thirty-minute detour from my way back to Cromere where I had booked my hotel for the month. I had my external flash in the car. Going to the church and getting photos of headstones and a dilapidated building in the background in the almost dark would be perfect.

“Here you go,” the server said and dropped the check on the table. “I put my number on there in case you’re staying in town and want to do something later. Together.”

I had seen that coming about two lattes ago, and I did consider it. Yet, the church actually sounded interesting, more interesting than vacation sex when I wasn’t even on vacation.

“I’m afraid I have to get some work done, actually.” I indicated my notebook before putting the receipt back to mark my spot and packing everything back into my bag. “But thanks for the offer. Maybe another time,” I said and tipped her generously.

She shrugged. “Keep the number. In case you change your mind.”

I did and smiled at her over my shoulder when I left the café.

Over the ocean, the pinks were surrendering to indigo and teal. Night’s breath was icy on the breeze.

* * *

I pulled on my jacket and left the car back at the mouth of the path that led to the church. It was a short walk of not even ten minutes, and I was glad that I also kept a flashlight in the trunk, because even with an almost full moon above, it was dark out here.

The trees grew tall on all sides, branches eating at the dusky sky. Insect noises and the sound of me walking were the only things I could hear, and there was something wonderfully peaceful about that.

I hadn’t lied to the server, I was a night owl and always had been, but I lived in the city, and night in the city was never really dark nor silent. Being out here was a different experience and refreshing in its way.

The church came up ahead of me like a looming scarecrow, raggedy and weather-beaten, but its former function clear even in its current condition. It was slightly uphill, which helped with that perception, but there was something… I had the overwhelming sense that the church had been waiting for me. That was nonsense. Buildings didn’t wait or want. They just were and aged and crumbled, but the fact this place did make me feel like the church was a living being boded well for the photos. I snapped a couple, looking up toward the church.

The church itself was really just a small building that might have held a congregation of maybe two hundred. From what I had read, there had been an abandoned mining town nearby, and the church had been left behind when the ore ran out. The bodies already in the earth had been left as well, a strange sort of exchange for the ore, iron paid for with bone.

When I reached the cemetery grounds, my flashlight licked against dark headstones that were leaning this way and that in time’s pull. With the dark church behind them, all this needed to be a perfect set for a horror movie was some fog and maybe a wolf howling. I chuckled. This was wonderful.

I decided that I would just walk around a bit so I could get a feel for the place, take some shots as I did so to begin with. I turned the flashlight off, put it in my camera bag, and started. The strobing light of my camera flash threw odd shadows that lingered on my retinas. I made my way toward the church doors in a slow half circle, not really planning anything, just going by instinct. Then, with a shot of a cracked church window, I saw that the door to the building was open, just enough to draw a hard shadow in the light of my camera flash.

I stopped and turned my flashlight back on, aiming it at the door. I took another picture even if the flashlight would mess up the lighting. I wasn’t sure why, because I was pretty good about not wasting shots. Some instinct maybe, or a random muscle jerk.

“Oh, opportunity, you call me,” I whispered, running the flashlight up the door, which was indeed open.

Alexa (she/her) has a lot of characters living in her head and wanting their stories told. Many of these people get snarky and won’t stop complaining if Alexa is too slow writing them, which means that for this author, sleep is a luxury. Book Review: The Arctic Fury by Greer Macallister

A story of perseverence, life and danger as twelve women go on an expedition for Lady Jane Franklin to find her lost husband's expedition and in the process find so much more than they anticipated.

My Rating for The Arctic Fury: 3.5 Stars

My Review:
Find the book at Amazon

Twelve women go on an adventure and when some only return, life is about to get complicated.

Lady Jane Franklin is determined to find her husband and his lost expedition in the arctic. Four parties led by men have had no luck so she turns to a new approach: put women in charge and just maybe she will get the answers she needs to what happened to her husband.

A year passes and now Virginia Reeve stands trial for murder. Survivors of the expedition are few but publicly sit in the front row giving her the support she needs. But out of a dozen, only five survived, what happened to the others? Was it murder? Or was it death by nature, misadventure, or other such random happenstance? Only the survivors know what happened and they are not talking.

THE ARCTIC FURY is my first foray into author Greer Macallister’s writing and it was an interesting story. The premise of Lady Jane Franklin’s tireless search for her husband and his expedition, the search for answers was the backdrop of the book as it mingles with scenes from a year later when Virginia, the leader of the all women expedition and one of the few survivors is on trial for murder. The back-and-forth storylines takes a little to get used to but after a while you get in the rhythm of the story as present and past collide and as the reader gets more insight to just what happened on the women’s expedition. The story is swift, and the author does a great job capturing all the characters personalities and uniqueness.

We meet Virginia Reeve as she stands trial for the murder of young and rich Caprice Collins, one of the few who didn’t return from the arctic with the others. Lady Jane Franklin chooses Virginia to lead the expedition she is putting together as Virginia has experience in leading wagon trains westward. The author does a great job keeping the reader on their toes as the story unfolds in its fashion. We get glimpses of how Virginia interacted with all the other women in the group during the expedition as well as afterwards, during the trial. The tension continues as the reader is taken on the journey with the women expedition as well as the aftermath as Virginia fights for her life with a seemingly incompetent defense attorney and a powerful and rich family determined to make someone pay for Caprice’s death. What the reader gets is more than a typical this is what happened, here is the aftermath and behold all go home. THE ARCTIC FURY is a bit different int hat regard as it delivers a story of faith, hope and perseverance that will keep you entertained until the end. I really enjoyed this first book of Greer Macallister and look forward to reading more from her in the future.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement

Book Spotlight/Guest Author Day: Now I See You

Please give a warm welcome to author Shannon Work as they drop by the Reading Nook to celebrate their new book, Now I See You. Let's chat with the author on Now I See You and see what's up with Shannon Work.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Most people don’t know I was a real estate developer before I was an author. One of my residential developments won a Best in America Living Award. I started and abandoned two novels over the years while I was still working and raising three children. I retired a couple years ago and decided it was now or never on writing a novel. While I was writing Now I See You, I kept what I was doing a secret from my family. I finally told my husband I was writing again when I was about half way finished with the first draft. I didn’t tell my children until I was finished. They were very surprised!

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I am an Agatha Christie fanatic. In fact, I held off publishing Now I See You so that I could publish it on September 15th, Agatha Christie’s birthday. I love that my first novel was published on her birthday! I have read Christie’s autobiography, several of her biographies, and many many of her books.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Probably my biggest pet peeve as a reader is when an author will change character points of view within the same scene. It stops me dead on the page—a huge distraction.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I grew up in Del Rio, Texas, on the US-Mexico border. My family has ranched the country around Del Rio since the 1880’s. I’m a seventh generation Texan, my family came here in 1832 when Texas was still a part of Mexico. Y si, hablo espanol!

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

I would spend it with my family. (And I’d probably eat lots and lots of  strawberry Twizzlers!)

Who is your hero and why?

I have two author heroes—Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark. Both overcame personal hardship, pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and succeeded beyond most people’s wildest dreams. At the same time, they were kind and generous people with family and friends who loved them.

What are you passionate about these days?

Animal rescue. There are so so many animals currently in shelters that need their furever homes. My heart breaks for them all. #AdoptDontShop

What do you do to unwind and relax?

Read! And go to the movies.

How to find time to write as a parent?

Just recently, my husband and I became empty nesters. Since I kept writing a secret, while our youngest was still living at home, I wrote Now I See You when he was in school. When he would get home, I would quietly close my laptop and pretend I hadn’t been working on anything important.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I probably first considered myself a writer after I published Now I See You and started getting positive feedback from strangers. Of course my family and friends were going to say they loved it, but when I started getting 4 and 5 star reviews from total strangers, then I finally thought I had a little street cred.

Do you have a favorite movie?

I have lots of favorite movies. At the top of my list are Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, Tombstone, The Patriot, and American President. I know, my taste is eclectic!

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I once spent six hours in the library at the University of South Carolina studying John Jake’s working papers that are archived there. John Jakes wrote historical fiction and is still one of my favorite authors.

Excerpt:
Emma clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle the scream that tried to escape. The shooter looked toward the window. Had he heard her? She turned to run, her boots instead slipping on some leaves, sending her crashing to the ground.
Heavy footsteps moved across the floor of the cabin, echoing in the quiet woods around her.
Emma scrambled to her feet and ran for all she was worth, crashing through the brush, no longer even trying to be quiet.
The door to the cabin slammed open as she sprinted for the pathway back down the mountain to her car. The air reverberated with the echo of several gunshots. Tiny hairs prickled on the back of her neck as a light whistling noise passed her ear.
"Stop! I'm warning you! Stop or I'll shoot you!" The man's voice echoed off the trees but she kept running. It was a stupid thing to say, since he had already tried to shoot her. Her gut told her there was no way she'd get out of this alive if she stopped moving.
Halfway down the mountain, Emma's toe caught one of those roots again. The action sent her sprawling to the ground, and she began to roll down the mountain. Grabbing at branches and brush, she finally stopped herself and pulled her aching body up off the ground. Her knee burned where the fabric had torn and flesh had scraped against the ground. Footsteps and voices sounded behind her, but they were further away than she'd expected. Her little fall seemed to have given her an advantage. She pulled herself up, ignoring the pain in her injured knee, and ran as fast as she could.
The sun had almost completely become lost below the treetops; the darkness made it hard for her to navigate. Finally, Emma burst out of the trees, gasping for air and sweating like a fiend. Her old car sat quietly, right where she'd left it. She dug in her pocket for the keys, but they were gone.
She must have lost them on the way down! Running straight to the back of the car, Emma groped around up under the bumper. Her fingers grasped the small magnetic box and she pulled the hidden key out of its safe storage container, grateful her father had insisted on putting it there when she left for college. As she ran to the driver-side door, the back door window exploded beside her, covering her in tiny little pieces of glass.
Yanking open the driver door, she jumped into the seat, slammed the door shut, and jammed the key into the ignition. Just as the engine turned over and she floored the gas pedal, the man from the cabin ran out of the woods. Her tires ground into the shoulder, spewing a cloud of rocks and dirt. Eventually, she gained control of her car and took off down the mountain roadway known as the Blue Ridge Parkway. Clutching the wheel, she prayed she'd stay on the road.
All the way back to Staunton, she kept an eye on the rearview mirror. When a dark-colored car came into view, she panicked, but it had a different shape than the one she'd seen and turned off a couple of exits later. As soon as Emma hit the Main Street exit, she drove straight through town.
Twelve years she'd stayed away from Staunton, avoiding her hometown and missing her parents, to not have to do the very thing she was about to do. Emma took a deep breath and steered her car onto the street that housed the Staunton Police Department. She had no other choice. There was only one man who could help her figure this out.

Read an Excerpt:

Zero’s shared office at the police station looked bleaker than usual. Not even nine o’clock and the morning was already too full of coffee and too scant on breakfast. After three hours in bed, Zero had chosen an extra fifteen minutes of snoozing instead of muesli and shower. She was regretting the no-muesli decision.

“So,” Zero said. “I got that list of psycho reasons for wanting to kill prostitutes.”

Kath raised her eyebrows. “Thought you’d get too sucked into the TV to do any work.”

Of course she did.

“Didn’t even switch it on. Used the Internet. According to Dr Google, scenario one is we could be looking at a man who has issues with women as such. He hates women and wants to hurt them, and the prostitute is simply an easy option. We’ll call him Bitter Boy.”

“Right.”

“The second scenario is that he despises prostitutes specifically. The attacks could be his mission to rid the world of women who, in his eyes, are morally unacceptable.”

“The Missionary.” Kath got up, reached for a blue marker and printed the two nicknames on the whiteboard, right below the photos and names of the two victims. Rebecca Mahoney, also known as Raven. Stella Baxter, a.k.a. Sirocco.

Zero wondered if their department would ever get a Smart Board. Unless Smart Boards were so smart they helped the police solve crimes, the official line went, the department would stick to the status quo in technology, thank you very much.

About the Author:
You won't believe this, but when I'm not a novelist I'm actually a Doctor of Mathematics. A business and data analyst. A wife and a mother. Most of all though - I am a writer (in several languages) hoping to change the world one book at a time.

My heritage is inter-continental. I was born and raised in Poland. When I was twelve, my family and I emigrated to South Africa. Your teenage years are usually your formative years, so it’s no surprise I consider South Africa my second homeland. For the past twenty years, I’ve lived in New Zealand, and people ‘back home’ tell me I’ve become a real Kiwi.

Crime fiction is my passion. My childhood hero was, predictably, Hercule Poirot. I've changed my mind several times since, and for a time I was totally into Harlan Coben's super-rich super-able Win (Windsor Horne Lockwood), but my current favourite is Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch… I mean, Sherlock Holmes.
