Confused and trapped, Zane didn’t like it. He’d escaped one
group that tried to force him to bend to their will. He wasn’t joining another.
“I’m under house-arrest? I’m not going to run off and leave you
short,” Zane said.
Bron’s broad shoulders and hard body blocked the doorway. All
of Zane’s dreams had been about the sexy Alpha who’d saved his life, carried
him to help and looked in on him daily. But the romantic notions vanished.
“In my experience, loners can be troubled. Until I find out
your full story, I’m taking any chances.”
Zane shook his head. “The doctor said you were a savior of lone
shifters. You said I was safe here.”
“You are safe. I just need to make sure everyone else is, too.
Some people leave packs or groups because they were abused and beaten down.
That can lead to them acting out and abusing others. Some are loners who aren’t
used to sharing and working together. Not all, but I don’t take chances.” Bron
studied Zane.
The feeling of inspection made Zane fidget. The pull remained;
this guy was beyond sexy and powerful. “I should just leave and send you the
money. You don’t need to be bothered with me.”
“What are you running from?” Bron asked.
“From jerks like you who want to bully me into doing things
their way. I’m tired of being used and put down. Never good enough. I’m not
putting up with that here, too.” Zane got up and stood toe-to-toe with Bron.
“Let me go.”
“No. You need help. Reno
isn’t far, but they don’t have a lot of woodworking jobs. That’s a place of
users and abusers, as well.” Bron moved forward.
Bron’s heat and scent made Zane want to give in. “I can take care
of myself.”
“Let’s start with the truth. Will you tell me more about your
colony?” Bron asked.
Zane shook his head. “I was never a top hunter or anything. I
couldn’t. I wouldn’t. There was no mate for me there. They tried to force me
because it was all about reproduction and growing the colony numbers. Another
group benefit was a bigger pool of potential mates. I didn’t fit in.”
“You believe in that one-mate myth?” Bron scoffed.
“I believe I’ll know what I want when I find it. I know I lust
after men. I’m not going to be forced into anything.” Zane pushed on Bron. “Let
me leave.”
“Not a chance.” Bron shoved Zane down on the bed. “Will your
colony be coming after you?”
Zane gasped and felt the weight of a full-grown man on him.
There was more power in Bron than he let on. His knees pinned Zane’s thighs as
Bron’s hands held down Zane’s arms. No fear filled Zane, only desire.
“They threw me out. They won’t come here. I won’t be your
prisoner. You’re treating me as if I’m a criminal.” Zane struggled.
