Tour Stop/Giveaway: Queen of Ruin by Paula Dombrowiak

Queen of Ruin
by Paula Dombrowiak
(Kingmaker Series, #2)
Publication date: June 11th 2024
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

Our marriage is fake. But our feelings are dangerously real…

Marrying playboy billionaire Darren Walker was only ever supposed to be a business deal.

If only it were that easy.

I’m finding it far too comfortable living in Darren’s world, and I never predicted I’d find real meaning in the charity I’m involved with while I pretend to be the perfect wife.

The worst thing is, I’m scared Darren’s feelings for me are becoming real, too.

But a woman with a past like mine doesn’t belong in a world like his. Especially because I thought my heart belonged to someone else before we were married. Someone much too close to him.

When Darren decides to leave his playboy ways behind and follow in his father’s footsteps, I must face reality. A marriage like ours won’t last forever.

Not when my former life has the power to come back to haunt me. There’s no way Darren’s reputation will survive the scandal of being married to a former escort.

And if I let myself get any deeper, neither will my heart…

Queen of Ruin is the second book in The Kingmaker trilogy, a steamy marriage of convenience romance full of political scandal. The books must be read in order for the best reader experience. This book does end in a cliffhanger.

Queen of Ruin Excerpt

“Revisionist history, Alistair,” I say, pointing my finger in the air before taking a seat on the step.

Alistair takes a seat next to me, stretching out his long legs over the marble steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

“We look back on history and memorialize a great man, but we forget about the flaws; we minimize them. His martyrdom makes it impossible to point them out. It’s true that Lincoln had one foot in the 20th century, but the other foot was still planted heavily in the 19th,” I lament, “and yet here we sit on the steps of this memorial that holds the daily pilgrimage of thousands, and we forget about those innate things that made him human.”

“We’re not really talking about Lincoln, are we?” Alistair asks astutely.

“I didn’t get along with my father,” I say as a matter of fact. “That’s never been in question; a constant since as far back as I can remember, and yet I always looked up to him.” I sigh, tilting my head towards Alistair who looks down at his clasped hands resting on his thighs. “But I always thought I knew him. Lately, I’m beginning to question that, to question a lot of things.”

“Anything in particular that you didn’t know?” he inquires, lifting a brow.

I pull out the envelope and hand it to Alistair.

“Fuck,” he says, “He was a client?”

“No, these were taken four years ago. She was a student, and my father was giving a speech at her university. She said nothing happened.”

“Do you believe her?” The photos are damning without context, but that’s the problem with photos – they’re up to the interpretation of the viewer.

“Bailey was there when they met and attests to the fact that he drove my father back to his hotel alone.”

“That’s not what I asked,” he questions.

“I wanted to believe her,” I admit, peering over at Alistair. “But it’s this part of me,” I gesture to the monument, “that needs the facts.”

“Who gave those to you?” Alistair’s question breaks through my thoughts. “Rausch?” He gives a dark laugh.

“I know he’s pissed that you circumvented the will, but now that it’s done, what does it matter to him?”

“Other than to gloat that he was right about marrying her?” I scoff. “I’m not worried about that.” I shake my head. “It’s who he got the photos from that I’m worried about.”

“If the press had gotten ahold of them…” Alistair doesn’t finish his sentence, but he doesn’t have to. This would be a huge scandal, whether it was an innocent interaction or not. Politics runs on perception, not to mention the media storm that would descend on Evangeline.

Even though I’m angry, I wouldn’t wish that upon her or the destruction of my parents’ reputation.

“Someone’s had these for four years, Alistair,” I point out, my voice sounding grave with the weight of it. “I have a feeling it was Langley.”

“But what would he have to gain from that?” Alistair asks. “Rumor around Washington was that he was going to be your father’s first pick as a running mate.”

Something my father taught me – Presidential elections aren’t won in the final hour. Presidents are made decades before they even run.

Feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket, I hold my hand up for Alistair to stop as I take a call. He rolls his eyes.

“Sir, I’ve been notified that the jet is ready for flight,” Bailey explains on the other end.

“What are you talking about?”

“The crew called me to find out if you would be joining.”

“Bailey, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I start to get agitated.

“I don’t think Evangeline knew that the flight crew would alert anyone.”

Evangeline?

Fuck!

“What’s going on?” Alistair asks, the creases of concern fanning his eyes.

“Evangeline’s leaving, and she’s taking my fucking plane.” My heart races and the sudden change makes me feel dizzy. Never did I think she would actually leave – especially when she knows what’s at stake.

“Leaving?” he asks, tilting his head in confusion. “Does she know she’s not getting any money unless she stays the whole year?”

“She knows damn well!” I yell, pacing along the steps. But if I thought Evangeline cared about the money, I’d have bought her a closet full of designer gowns, fur coats, or whatever the fuck she wanted.

She’d rather leave penniless then stay with me.

I press the phone to my ear and ask to be patched into the pilot.

“What’s the destination?” I ask before the pilot can utter a word.

“Sorry, Mr. Walker?”

“Where the fuck is my wife going?” I fume.

“Las Vegas, sir,” the captain confirms. “Do you want me to cancel the flight?”

Welcome Gray Dixon today

Please give a warm welcome to author Gray Dixon as we chat about their new book, Apartment 18B.

What are you currently working on?
I have so many stories started (usually at least two to three chapters) ranging from sci-fi futuristic, paranormal and contemporary. When the ideas come to me I have to write them down before the concept slips away (usually another idea pushes it away). But, currently I’m working on Book Two of the Park Avenue Trilogy. I want it out be late Spring.

How long did it take you to get your rough draft finished on your latest release?
From start of concept, to writing the draft, editing, to final release took over a year. Probably longer, but I’d say a good 15-18 months.

Are any of your characters like you?
A lot of them are, bits and pieces, and a number of them are of people I know whether family, friends or people I’ve encountered in everyday life.

Do you have a favorite quote from your book(s)?
Brooklyn Jameson was mine. She just didn’t know it yet.

What was the hardest part of writing your book(s)?
Getting it finished! I worked extremely hard at polishing it as best I could. I take real pride in this story and can’t wait to finish book two.

Do you keep a notebook near your for when new ideas pop into your head?
Oh, yeah! I have scraps of paper, discarded envelopes from mail I’ve gone through, and a notebook. This New Year I vowed to consolidate all my scribbles into one place for reference. I know where everything is, but I need to be more organized!

Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?
Simply, thank you. You inspire me every day to give you the best stories possible.

For readers who haven't tried your books yet, how do you think your editor or loyal readers would describe your books?
Hot, sexy, well-written, great characters, steamy. Hot, sexy…wait I already said that.

Do you prefer to extensively plot your stories, or do you write them as they come to you?
I plot in my head from the concept, sometimes write ideas down, but usually start writing at least the first two chapters and even sometimes write the ending. I keep blank templates ready to use when the muse strikes. I can be in the middle of writing one thing and go off on a tangent to writing another. I don’t sleep much.

What has been the defining moment in your career that made you think “Yes, I am now a writer!”?
Aside from the first contract I received, followed by the first sale, last year at a conference was probably a pivotal one. I had two fans (also authors) look for me and went all “fan girl” on me. Literally brought me to tears because I’d just been told that Apartment 18B wasn’t worthy to be published. I wanted to give up, but they told me they were die-hard fans and one of them was actually inspired as a reader to start writing their series (their first writing). Well, that was enough for me to finish Apartment 18B and make it better.

Now let's discover Gray Dixon's Apartment 18B...

Erotic Contemporary Romance/BDSM
The Park Avenue Trilogy, Book 1

Unlock unimaginable pleasure…
Christopher Nash, a man of the world is disgustingly wealthy and to some a notorious womanizer. His methods in sex and women are the same as in his business dealings—execute a plan and always get what he wants. After rescuing a sassy and gorgeous woman, something behind her eyes makes him want to take care of her.

…and surrender to him.
Brooklyn Jameson literally stumbles at the feet of a mysterious man. Handing her an unusual business card offers the opportunity to meet again. At the appointed time and place, he makes an offer she can’t refuse. Life is about to change when she accepts the proposition—four weekends unlocking her wildest fantasies of pleasure.

In the end, can Brooklyn trust Christopher and surrender to every dark desire inside Apartment 18B or run away when he breaks her heart?

Excerpt:

He wanted sex, only. Could I handle that?
Sex without strings attached, pure, unadulterated, down and dirty sex. Men like Christopher Nash couldn’t give more. They wanted the kind of sex no one could know about, behind closed doors with no public displays of affection. Men in his position don’t go for girls like me. They used us, and they certainly didn’t show us off.
I’d known that was a possibility when I came here tonight. So why was I vacillating? I was a smart, liberated woman and could deal with being used for one night, right?
Standing still at the window with his back to me, I couldn’t help to admire his backside as much as the front. I decided to stop overthinking the situation and wait and see what he’d do next.
Without facing me, he spoke in a deep and rumbly voice. “Take off your dress, Miss Jameson.”
Stunned from his bluntness, I wasn’t sure how to answer his command, and yes it was a command, not a nice, friendly request. I came here tonight to see the famous Christopher Nash, not shy away when he made a move on me. “What?” I finally eked out, giving him a bit of indignation. “Excuse me? Who said I…I didn’t agree to…” I wasn’t sure my voice came out the way I thought in my head. The words came out kind of squeaky.
I’d had masturbatory sessions late at night dreaming about having sex with the man. My head told me to turn and walk away because I wasn’t ready, but my body said something else. A few minutes ago, I intended to leave, but that kiss. Damn! It was hot and swayed my body to stay, not run. Now, I had no other choice than to obey. Well, I did have a choice to say ‘No, thank you’ and leave, but I wanted to experience what it was like to be in the company of such a wealthy, powerful and handsome as all get out man. I wanted the fantasy, not deny it. My arousal factor jumped a notch, and my body overruled my brain. I wasn’t sure who I tried to convince—him or me. This was what I’d dreamed about, and I argued with myself about telling him to shove it and leave or stay and have him shove it—in me.
He glanced over his shoulder with lust-filled eyes that didn’t leave mine. I found it hard to break the intense, mesmerizing blue gaze. The decision was made. My body won.
“Because we both know you want to do as I ask.” His rich, low murmur made parts of me tremble inside.
I lifted my chin to project more confidence, but my words came out just the opposite. “I think you’ve misunderstood my intentions coming here.”
“Since our first meeting on the street, something was building between us. I want you, and you want me. Are you denying it?”
“I-I mean you confuse me. I didn’t know what to expect.”
“There’s no need for confusion. You can trust me to take care of you, bring you pleasure beyond your wildest dreams. If you agree to do as I say and see if you like how I can make you feel, then take the next step.” He paused before using the same direct command as before. “Remove your dress.”
In the back of my mind, I knew the argument was sound. The attraction between us was profound. I had to be honest with myself. I came tonight not to return the shoes. They were an excuse, the out I needed in case I got in over my head. I came because I wanted to see what sex with a man like him was like. A powerful man, an utterly irresistible man, who with only a look turned me to mush. When he faced the window again, shivers of anticipation coursed through me. I needed to shut my logical thoughts down and go with my true intentions. My body knew what it wanted, I just had to convince my brain.
Without a second of hesitation, I pulled the zipper down, the plastic teeth moaned with each tug. I pushed the crepe material over my shoulders, and then wiggled it down past my hips until the small garment fell into a puddle around my ankles.

My Personal Review for Papa's Boy by Sue Brown

In the Morning Report Series, we meet the boys from the Lost Cow ranch. Luke, Simon, Momma and more who are a delight to behold. In this next chapter in the series, we find Ray Sloane, Pastor Noah's right hand man, lonely, bored and tired of seeing the couples all around him. He wants what they have-love, a partner and a life with that man. Sue Brown delivers all that and more in Papa's Boy.

My Rating for Pap's Boy- 5 Stars and a recommended read

Ray Sloane is tired of being alone. He wants what his friends have-love, companionship, a life with his partner. What he gets after a night at the infamous Pink Palm is a man so deep in the closet and full of so much pain, Ray wonders if he just bit off more than he can handle.

Zeke is a divorced gay man, with bigot parents who have systematically tried to beat the 'gay' out of him. From a camp where he was beaten, had EST and more done to him to losing his kids to his now ex-wife then losing the one thing that gave him joy-teaching, Zeke is at the end of his rope. Lost, broken and in a world of pain, it will take all of Ray's determination, faith and love to show this broken man that there is a life out there for him...all he needs is a little faith and courage to take that step. Can Zeke find it in himself to let himself live again even as he falls for Ray?

Sue Brown continues to stun me with her work. With the complex and vulnerable characters to a story line that could be seen in the everyday news around the world, this author delivers a series and a perfect ending to the Morning Report series. Her characters are exquisite, the story line had me laughing, crying then cheering in secession and I got to admit, the moment I picked up Morning Report, I knew I found that one author I will buy no matter what. Her books are poignant, satisfying and exquisitely written.

Papa's Boy delivers a complex yet fulfilling story that will leave you breathless. Hate in any form is awful and a sad fact, real in today's world. Ms. Brown captures it perfectly in her Morning Report series and in this wonderful follow up to Complete Faith, we find Noah's second in command, Ray Sloane, finally finding the man he needs...too bad Zeke is one basket case and on the edge of a cliff. He is deeply in the closet, told repeatedly from his bigot parents that he is a sin and had his kids taken away, lost his job and more. This is a man reeling in pain and it is up to Ray to help lead him from the cliff's edge and show him he can have a life again, to love again and to heal in Ray's arms. It will take all of Ray's strength, faith, love and devotion to show Zeke that he is worthy of being loved and that he can get away from the hate he has lived with for years.

Sue Browns wonderful Papa's Boy delivers a strong story line that will make you wish you could wrap your arms around Ray and Zeke and tell them it will be alright, that it just takes time and strength plus lots of love-from Momma, to Noah and to Luke, Simon and the Lost Cow hands. Zeke will find he has a future if he is brave enough to take that major step.

Pap's Boy is more than guy meets guy and fall in love. it's about dealing with hate, about finally accepting you are who you are and no one can change you and that love is more than pleasure, it can be healing as well. Sue Brown captures all this and more in her latest Morning Report story and I can hardly wait for her next one.

But Noah won’t hide his sexuality or his love from the world, and he won’t start a relationship with Tommy while Tommy hides his, either. Faced with the choice of losing Noah or coming out to his parents, Tommy takes his first steps out of the closet.

But Tommy isn’t the only one facing challenges. Thanks to an outpouring of hatred from Pastor Jackson and a group of ranch owners, Noah must cope with the possible loss of his church and his livelihood.

When Ray Sloane tires of the men in his usual club, he finds himself in the Pink Palm, an inauspiciously named spit-and-sawdust dive, not the sort of place an elementary school teacher and pastor’s assistant should be seen in. On the other hand, Ray needs a fresh face. But what he gets is a closeted, desperately unhappy divorcé named Zeke.

Losing his teaching job and his kids has left Zeke bitter and in denial about his sexuality, but Ray is determined to get under his skin. Just as Zeke starts to relax, life interferes with Ray’s plans: Lee, the teenage organist from St. Mark's, tells his parents that he was abused as a teeanger by a prominent congregation member from his old church, and Ray becomes the target of bullies at school and has to worry about his own job. With the specter of what happened to Zeke hanging over him, Ray must protect Lee and his own reputation, all while trying to convince Zeke that he doesn’t need to run away when their relationship grows more intense.

And coming December 19th, Luke and Simon are back....

Series Spotlight~All The King's Men by Donya Lynne

I want to thank Dawn for having me on today to share a bit about my All the King's Men (AKM) series, which has been a pleasant surprise for me in how many fans it has garnered in such a short span of time, as well as how rabid those fans are about the next book in the series, due out in January. When one of my fans told me that she had fallen into daydreams and fantasies for days on end after reading Rise of the Fallen, I was blown away. My book had done that to her? Seriously? But then more readers voiced similar sentiments and I realized that these weren't just characters to them. These were living, breathing people (well, vampires) who fans wanted to travel to Chicago to meet (the series takes place primarily in Chicago). I was blown away.

So, maybe instead of running down synopses of the books, which you can read on Amazon, I should introduce you to this cast of characters who has readers swooning and fantasizing about going a round or two with them in the bedroom or elsewhere:

Micah Black: He's really the star. I modeled him after Andrei Andrei and was fortunate enough for Andrei to give me permission to use his picture on the cover of Rise of the Fallen. But Andrei IS Micah. Nobody else would do for him. The entire series is ultimately about Micah. He's a vampire that's over a thousand years old, who has loved and lost…and loved again. We meet him in Rise of the Fallen as he's lost his second mate, who was really just a half-mate, but it doesn't matter. He still reacts powerfully and falls into the abyss of hell, ready to end his miserable life as painfully as possible until Samantha Garrett comes along. Unfortunately, he has already set evil into motion, and now both he and Samantha are in danger. If you haven't read the book, yet, I won't spoil it for you by saying more than that. But Micah is smexy and he is extremely powerful. Oh, and he's a former dom. Just sayin'.

Traceon Benyon: Trace plays a pivotal role in making sure Micah doesn't off himself, and he has extreme depravity at the heart of his reasons why he's so protective of Micah. Trace is tortured beyond belief, and he's a powerful mixed-blood vampire (half-human and half-vamp) with extraordinary gifts nobody can even comprehend. Trace has pretty much stolen Micah's thunder with the fans. Everyone wants to know more about Trace, who is an enigma and whose own story slowly unfolds through the first four novels (and one novella, Micah's Calling) until we get to his story, which is scheduled to be the fifth novel in the series. Let's just say that his bond to Micah is strong, as well as his bond to Samantha. Oh, and Trace is a hardcore submissive. Just sayin'. You connect the dots.

Arion Savakis: Arion is the most attractive of the group. He's not just handsome. He's frickin' hot, with a tattoo sleeve on his muscular, right arm to match the one his best friend, Io, has on his left arm. But Ari's also humble and deeply troubled. Arion (Ari) has lived a life of lies in order to make his family and friends happy, but all the while he has denied himself who he truly is. When he meets Severin, he finally realizes that he was never meant to court the fairer sex. What he wants is purely male, purely masculine, and purely Sev. But he'll lose everything if he follows his heart and goes against his family. And therein lies the conflict.

Severin Bannon: Sev has secrets of his own. Conceived through rape to a dreck (the vampires' sworn enemy) mother and a vampire father, Severin must hide his mixed bloodlines or risk being ostracized from both the dreck community and the vampire one. If anyone at AKM found out he was half dreck, it could jeopardize his career and his future. But Sev has a softer side, too: He is a talented painter, and he obsesses over Arion by painting his image over and over, feeling as though it's the only way he'll ever be with the male he is so smitten with. Only one problem, Sev is a hunted male. An assassin with a blood vengeance borne of a terrible misunderstanding wants to see him dead and will stop at nothing until he is.

Iobates Liatos (Io): Io is a dick when we first meet him. He is chauvinistic, prejudiced, and horribly unpleasant. In the dictionary, his picture sits next to the word homophobe. Oh, and goody for him, Ari is his best friend. So, yep, finding out Ari is hot for Sev is probably not going to go over well with Io. And isn't that just great? Io is hot, hot, hot. And he knows it, bedding females like they're a dime a dozen. He's reckless, rebellious, and a former cobalt addict (cobalt is the drecks' contribution to the recreational drug circuit). He lives life at two hundred miles per hour. But he meets his match, who ends up teaching him a thing or two about humility and forgiveness, as well as friendship and taking the time to enjoy the pleasures life can offer.

Malek (he hasn't given me his last name, yet): At one time, Malek was Micah's best friend. But that was long ago. The two look so much alike they could be brothers, and they both took mates around the same time, and lost them around the same time, but for two very different reasons. Malek lost his mate because she was human, and he had been forbidden by law to change her to an immortal so they could be together forever. Whereas Micah went into both an external and internal meltdown and withdrew from society as a result of the death of his mate, Malek reacted another way. He denied his mate's death, refusing to accept it, and he ended up becoming what Micah refers to as a whitewashed version of himself. Malek lost his identity and became hollow, empty of life and spirit. I'm writing his story now, and it's quite painful to relive what he's gone through as he reconnects with life.

Tristan: Tristan is the commander of Micah's team. His mate, Josie, is pregnant, and as of yet, nothing too exciting has happened with him, but I feel like he's just holding out for the right time. He has shown me that Malek resents him because Josie used to be human, and even though Tristan had never truly mated Josie by the vampire definition of the word, he changed her anyway once the laws surrounding changing humans became more relaxed where mates were concerned. Tristan does have a habit of throwing pens when he's pissed off, though, and he's known Micah and Malek since the beginning, having been trained under Micah's tutelage.

Those are the main characters, but others have joined along the way, most notably Maddox (who readers will be introduced to in the next book. His introduction could cause a few jaws to drop. I won't say more), Brak (again, ditto what I said for Maddox), and Cordray (Cordray is not a male. She's a very bad-ass female who is way awesome. One beta reader already told me they have a girl crush on her, and I can totally see why. She doesn't take shit from anyone, and she can throw down with the best. She's inked up all over, has super-long, black hair she wears in all manner of wicked braids and styles, and has a shoe fetish, of all things. Plus, she's the only person who can talk back to the king and live to tell about it).

If you're interested in reading the books, this is the order they were published in:

1.      Rise of the Fallen (Micah's story)
2.      Heart of the Warrior (Ari's and Sev's story. Make sure you have your Kleenex box by your side. I get a lot of comments about readers crying with this one.)
3.      Micah's Calling (novella that explores what happened between Micah and Sam (and with Trace) right after Rise of the Fallen)

Coming in 2013:

4.      Rebel Obsession (Io's story) is due out in January, and my editor tells me this is her favorite of the bunch so far.
5.      Return of the Assassin (Malek's book) is in progress and due out in the second half of 2013.

Thank you for having me today. I hope you enjoyed meeting my AKM boys.

Introducing Guest Author Freddy MacKay

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are having a wonderful day! Dawn has been gracious enough to let me guest blog here today.

*dances*
It was nice of her, no?

Since it’s my day, I’m supposed to write about something, anything, interesting. To be honest, I had been drawing a blank, but that happens sometimes, doesn’t it? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one whose been handed ‘an assignment’ and gone ‘F**K! How am I going to write this?’ (And yes, I say FRAK all the time).

*laughs*

I have written posts on community service, autism, budget cuts on shelters, cool science stuff (I am a nerd) and so forth, but each time I guest post I want to write something different. So I’ve been agonizing over what to write for today because it has to be different. Of course, a lot of people want to be different, do things differently, and be the first to accomplish the impossible, and all that jazz, so I’m not alone there.

But really, with nearly 7 billion people on Earth, how easy is it to be different?

It just so happens that once I finally decided to write about ‘different’ an interesting news article started to make rounds a couple days ago. The article actually is spawned off of a teacher’s opinion that we are actually all the same. This one:

So, what this all really means is I finally found my post idea. “The differences and similarities between people and how it can affect us an individual.”

*throws confetti*

Can you tell I was – and am – a nerd?

In summary, the article was about this:

A Massachusetts high school English teacher, David McCullough, tells the graduating class of 2012 “You are not special.”

*Wait… what?*

Oh, no. He totally did that.

Mr McCullough goes on to tell the 2012 graduating class that they’ve been spoiled, pampered, bubble-wrapped, helmeted, etc., and gives the kids a whole bunch of numbers (like half of them will divorce, the number of valedictorians graduating that year) about what they’ll face once they get out in the big wide world.

Interesting way to congratulate a bunch of seniors, no?

David McCullough’s final statement to his students was "The sweetest joys of life, then, come only with the recognition that you're not special. Because everyone is."

I don’t know about you, but I had to reread the article a couple times.

There are a whole lot of different perspectives people could take on this teacher, and what he did. Here are a few:

1.      *claps* good for him, he told those kids what everyone wants to tell them right now.
2.      *shocked silence* how could a teacher say something like that?
3.      *quiet observation* he’s not wrong, but shouldn’t have said those things at their  graduation.

And that’s just a few different ways someone could view Mr McCullough’s speech. With nearly 7 billion people on the Earth, everyone will have their own opinion formed from their experiences and perspectives.

Some of them will agree. Some will not. Some opinions will overlap. Some will not.

I personally love this article, not because I’m sitting here going “YES!” pumping my first, but because it’s the type of speech that garners debate from all sides of the spectrum. And I love when people discuss viewpoints.

(There is a reason my blog is called ‘Freddy’s Single Viewpoint Stereograph’, and why my welcome says: Perspective is the only unique thing we can lay claim to as a person. And, as the title states, this blog is about a single viewpoint. Mine. Please feel free to agree or disagree. All viewpoints are important and make the world a place that's more fun. You are more than welcome to share yours with me.)

I personally love the way he ended his speech, but I’m also sure I took it in a different manner than he actually meant.

*grins*

I agree, but disagree with him.

He’s right about being unique, or special, because there are a lot of people in our world that share our experiences.

I think it’s why people can get frustrated at certain points in their life. Because they crave to be different, do something different, and that can be hard with so many people out there and how quickly we can communicate with one another with today’s media.

Someone else has had a class valedictorian, or has had a really bad day, failed a test, or aced a test. Someone’s parents have gotten divorced, or they have gotten married. Someone has gone off and done something stupid with their friends, or lay out under the big blue sky wondering if there was someone out there who understood them. Someone else has felt absolutely alone in the world, so sad they feel empty and alone inside. Someone has loved someone else desperately and completely. And someone else has put out a helping hand when someone has needed it.

But just because we might share those experiences, that doesn’t mean they are the same. We are individuals with our own minds. We make our own choices, live our own lives, and interpret everything that has happened to us according to the beliefs and decisions we made for ourselves.

So why?

Why would I drag up some guy’s commencement speech to a bunch of high schoolers?

Because, whether you are in agreement or not, Mr McCullough does have a point. What his point was is up for debate for anyone who wants to, but that’s not what I want to focus on.

What did I get out of it? Probably not what he intended (most definitely not) but I did get something.

In a world with so many people with so many similar experiences, we have to find what’s right for us and what will make us happy.

*smiles* Can you just see him beating his head against a wall?

 I can. *chuckles*

We can choose to listen to the naysayers, lying down in defeat, or we can pick ourselves up and enjoy our own individuality–just because you share an experience with someone else, that doesn’t mean you can’t revel in it as your own.

Because it is.

You experienced it. It is yours. You are you.

It’s not physically possible for anyone else to be you. Just like Quantum Mechanical Model of Atoms states – the simplified version – no two electrons can be in the same space at the same time, therefore no one else can be you (I’m weird, I know. Join me ;) ).

There is a flipside though.

You can find someone out there to share your experiences with. You are not alone.

In a world with so much pain, bad news, and pessimism that it can overwhelm us, someone else there has experienced those same things. Knows how it feels. Can sympathize.

They could also share in your joy, happiness, and celebrations and momentous moments in life.

Under the big blue sky, there is someone out there – a friend, a lover, or family – that can appreciate you, be there for you.

The reason I noticed this article, why I wanted to talk about differences, is because I think we can all get a little lost in our big wide world.

There is so much information out there, so many different opinions, so many different ideas, concepts and viewpoints, it all can get muddled because the effort it takes to wade through all of it so we can feel alone out there.

And putting yourself out there, for someone to see and judge, can be a scary thing for anyone.

We can allow our differences bring us together or pull us apart. We can respect them or not. We can allow someone with similar experiences in or not. We can hear another person’s opinion or brush it off. We can learn and grow from our experiences or not.

Ultimately, we decide what we get out of life.

And that’s the reason I find people so fascinating, with all their different stories and perspectives. Is what they ultimately decide to do with their differences and similarities. It’s what draws us in as observers.

We watch, read, or tell a story because we feel a connection to it. Others might too, and when they do, it’s wonderful to see how they respond. Of course, others might disagree as well. It happens.

It happens because we’re different. And that’s okay. Chances are you’ve disagreed with someone before, too.

And unfortunately though, sometimes when people disagree, someone gets hurt. It’s sad when that happens because there is also a lot of love out there. Disparaging viewpoints can bring a person down, make them feel worthless, curl up on themselves and forget that there are other people out there who don’t agree with the negative things others might say about us.

What I hope, if you’re ever feeling alone and like no one cares, if someone has said something or done something that hurts, you remember there is someone out there that agrees with you, too. And that you will reach out, because with 7 billion people in the world, someone is out there doing the same, putting their hand out there, waiting for someone to grab ahold of it because they care.

 About the author:
I grew up thinking catching worms and sharing them with other people was normal.  Along with running around with nothing on when the heat waves struck during the summer. My imagination and love for the outdoors only expanded as I got older. And while I realized wearing clothes was the norm, I don't have to wear them in my house or in my sleeping bag.

More than once I have woken up damp, cold and a little confused to where I was because of my love for camping.  The problem usually rectifying itself when I realized I was in a sleeping bag, in the cold, and my back hurt more than I like to admit.  Camping is something I actively pursue because overlooking the views of the world is more fun than almost anything to me.

After going college I got a degree I always thought I wanted, and still do, I'm just not sure what to really do with it.  So it's there on my wall.  When I got my master's degree I used that to provide for me until I decided I liked being around less people rather than more.

When I'm not driving around the country, or at a soccer game, I like to hide away with as many books as possible. That or find a willing (or a disgruntled and somewhat willing) subject to photograph.  Taking 'pictures' like the one you see at the top of my webpage.

Being able to take photographs for fun is one way I can guarantee going new places and meeting interesting people because while I don't like being around a lot of people, I like talking to them.  Contradicting I know.  Monotony is my biggest rival, so getting out and about it good for me.  When on a plane or in a car or on a bus, I always enjoy it when someone talks back.

When I write, I don't write specifically one genre, one topic or type of relationships.  Life has a whole lot of people in it and I'd hate to miss out on anyone because I'm so focused on one type of person.  Meaning, I will write stories that have combination of human interaction depending on how I feel about a topic.  My family's pretty diverse so nothing was ever taboo.

So now, to bide my time I write about all the imaginative stories I ignored while doing everything else.  And hope I get to travel again soon so I can take some more pictures and meet more people who inspire me.
