Book Description

Jaya’s relationships never last more than six weeks. Austen wants to be her forever.

Six weeks is the outer limit for one of Jaya’s relationships. When men find out there is no future with her, they tend not to stick around for long.

She’s gotten into the habit of leaning on her cousin Austen to get over each breakup. Who better? Austen is six feet three of solid sympathy. Both adopted into the same extended family at young ages, they’ve been friends their whole lives, with a mutual taste for good food and expensive whisky. But when Jaya takes her latest failed romance to him, Austen makes it clear his interest in her is far from cousinly.

“Think about me,” Austen tells her, and Jaya starts to do just that. No doubt, Austen is incredibly attractive, and she can’t say she’s not curious to find out what he’s like in bed, but can their bond survive this new test?

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of light bondage.

Excerpt

Austen answered his phone on the first ring.

“What do you need, kiddo?”

Jaya paused, taken aback by the curt greeting. After a moment, she realised that he always answered his calls from her in the same way. “What do you need?” As if she could never just be calling for no reason at all.

“Is that any way to greet your favourite cousin?” she replied, forcing a bright note into her voice. “You’re my favourite, you know.”

“As far as you know, you might have any number of cousins,” Austen said coolly. “How could you possibly claim to know I would be the favourite?”

Because you’re the only one I’ve actually met, she wanted to tell him, although she understood the crude point he was trying to make. By blood, she was no cousin of his.

Jaya wished she owned one of those old-fashioned phones with the long curly cord so she could twine it between her fingers. Instead, she shifted her mobile from one sweaty hand to the other.

She wasn’t about to tell him that she couldn’t bear her own company tonight. She’d left work early, needing to get away from the high-energy actors she was constantly surrounded by, only to find that the so-called peace of her apartment was too oppressively quiet.

“I thought we might grab a drink tonight,” Jaya said, still striving to maintain her cheerful tone. “It’s been a while.”

“Six weeks,” Austen said. “Right on schedule.”

She remembered what he’d said the last time they’d met up. That she only called him when she broke up with someone. That, to her, he was no more than a shoulder attached to a man. A shoulder for her to cry on, presumably, although she never did cry. She merely got drunk.

“Ha ha. Do you want the drink or not?” Jaya demanded.

“I have to get up early tomorrow,” Austen told her, sounding uncharacteristically reluctant.

What is wrong with him? Jaya wondered, pulled out of her own problems for a brief moment. It had to be bad if he was turning down liquor. They both fancied themselves connoisseurs of the hard stuff. Neither of them drank wine or, shudder, beer.

“I’ll get you home early, granddad,” Jaya told him. “So how about it? Nine o’clock at The Cat’s Whiskey?”

“All right, kiddo.”

Shaking her head, Jaya hung up. He didn’t have to sound so bloody glum about the prospect.

Guest Author day with Farzana Doctor

Welcome author Frazana Doctor today to the Reading Nook. Please remember that there is a giveaway at the end of the post. Farzana Doctor will be awarding a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner and a print copy of the book to 10 randomly drawn winners (US Only) via rafflecopter during the tour. The tour is sponsored by Goddess Fish Promotions.

Now let's chat with the author...

How did you start writing literary fiction?

When I began writing my first novel, I didn’t have any knowledge about genres. I just wrote in the style of the books I read. I admire the ways in which literary fiction’s prose can be beautiful and evocative. I also enjoy feeling deeply with characters, sometimes crying and laughing on the same page.

Plotter or pantster?
A combination. I like to know the story’s arc and the characters’ main obstacles and desires before I begin writing. I’ll sometimes brainstorm a list of scenes to help me for when I get stuck later. And then the rest of it is pantsing, I guess, where I listen deeply to my creative unconscious and the spirits voices that come to me.

What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Can you believe that I don’t have a writing desk? I write in bed, at the kitchen table, on trains, in coffee shops. I guess I like to move around! There is usually a hot beverage nearby, and often a pen and paper.

Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
One of my characters, Azeez, is a spirit. He “came” to me late in the process of writing the book, and it felt a spirit was feeding me his scenes and dialogue. I enjoy his way of looking at the world from a wise and distant perspective.

Finish this sentence: I write because ____...
If I didn’t I’d feel really uncomfortable, kind of like if I hadn’t exercised today. I think it might be an addiction. I feel withdrawal when I haven’t written for a few days.

What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
All Inclusive has been described by the Toronto Star as a book that will raise eyebrows. I’m guessing that they might be referring to a group sex scene in which m my protagonist, Ameera, participates.

What is next on your writerly horizon?
I’ve just completed my 4th novel, Unfamiliar Skin, which shines a spotlight on the Dawoodi Bohra community, which I’m from.

GENRE:   Literary Fiction, LGBT, magical realism, multicultural

A story about an all-inclusive resort, the ghost of an unknown father, and the tragedies we can’t forget.

What’s it like when everyone’s dream vacation is your job? Ameera works at a Mexican all-inclusive resort, where every day is paradise — if “paradise” means endless paperwork, quotas to meet, and entitled tourists. But it’s not all bad: Ameera’s pastime of choice is the swingers scene, and the resort is the perfect place to hook up with like-minded couples without all the hassle of having to see them again.

Despite Ameera’s best efforts to keep her sideline a secret, someone is spreading scandalous rumours about her around the resort, and her job might be at stake. Meanwhile, she’s being plagued by her other secret, the big unknown of her existence: the identity of her father and why he disappeared. Unbeknownst to Ameera, her father, Azeez, is looking for her, and they both must come to terms with the reason why he abandoned her.

A moving new work from award-winning author Farzana Doctor, All Inclusive blurs the lines between the real world and paradise, and life and death, and reminds us that love is neither easily lost nor found.

A DC8 droned above.

“Here they come,” I announced. Friday was our departure-arrival day. One sunburned and
grouchy group left for their northern homes, and another cohort, ecstatic and pale, touched down and took their place.

Roberto grabbed a plastic file-box and gestured for me to sit beside him. I lowered myself
onto the makeshift seat and wiped away a slick of perspiration from the creases behind my
knees.

“Ameera, you hear about that tour rep getting fired over at Waves?” Roberto stroked his
thin moustache.

“Nancy? Yeah, I’m still in shock.” I hadn’t known her well, but I’d gone clubbing with her
and the other tour reps from our sister resorts a few times. She’d seemed all right to me.
The airplane circled closer, and, in unison, we clapped our hands over our ears and tilted
our chins to the sky. After it had rolled across the tarmac and quieted its engines, we resumed our gossip.

“What I don’t get is why someone in their late twenties would want to have sex with a fifteen-year-old.” Roberto shook his head, as though trying to dislodge the idea.

“But didn’t the kid lie about his age? He told her he was eighteen, right?” While I’d never
in a million years sleep with a teenager, I could imagine how booze and loneliness could have led Nancy to her mistake.

Synopsis

Giving true love a spin . . . Michelin Moses is a country music star on the rise. With a hit single under his Texas-sized belt buckle and a sold-out concert tour underway, his childhood dreams of making it big are finally coming true. But there’s one thing missing—a promise to his dying mother that he’d find it—him—when the time was right. With a little luck, he won’t have to wait too long . . . Lucky Ramirez is a hunky boy toy who dances at The Broom Closet, one of West Hollywood’s hottest gay bars. He loves what he does, and he’s good at it—almost as good as he is at playing dumb when he spots Michelin Moses at the bar. What happens next is off the charts—and keeps Michelin coming back for more. He’s just not sure it’s the right move for his career. But if Lucky gets his way, Michelin will get Lucky—and no matter how the media spins it, neither of them will be faking it . . .

Excerpt

Michelin Moses had no business at a gay bar, especially not one as notorious as West Hollywood’s The Broom Closet. And the line to get in totally underscored that—the vestibule was a long, narrow tunnel filled with kids out to enjoy their Friday night. Babies, really. Fresh-faced young things who probably didn’t even need to shave jostled one another in the tight space, laughing and joking as they admired one another’s club wear and gossiped about who was fucking who. Not that Michelin was listening in, but the space was so tiny it was hard not to. He didn’t have club wear to ogle. He had “please for the love of God don’t notice me” clothes. And the idea of openly pointing to another dude in line and announcing to one’s friends, “Oh yeah, I hit that last weekend” was so totally foreign that he couldn’t help but gape a bit. The plexiglass walls of the tunnel gave off weird shadows—neither the lights outside the club nor the dim track lighting along the bottom edge of the tunnel were enough illumination. He tugged at the collar of his Henley shirt. Damn, it was hot in here. Too small. Too tight. Not enough air. Shut up. He was not claustrophobic. If this line ever moved, he’d feel better once he was inside the Closet. If that’s not a metaphor for your whole damn life… “ID please.” Finally, the line reached the bouncers who were taking ID. Michelin couldn’t even remember the last time he’d had to stand around like this, show ID. At least unlike these nineteen-year-olds with their fake identification, Michelin’s Oregon driver’s license was likely to hold up. The bouncer was a huge guy—so tall and jacked that Michelin felt for the tiny stool that held him up—with surprisingly small, delicate hands. He held the card aloft before finally handing it back and nodding. “Okay, cowboy. Enjoy your night.” At least he hadn’t laughed outright at the name. That was something. Shoving his license back in his wallet, he stumbled a bit coming out of the tunnel. “Watch it,” someone barked behind him. “Sorry,” Michelin mumbled. Hell, he couldn’t even successfully enter the Closet. A nervous laugh bubbled up in his throat, something he stamped right back down. Forget the stupid bar, coming out of his personal closet was out of the question, and he didn’t need the crowd jostling behind him to remind him of that. “This your first time here?” a kid to the left of him asked—short little guy with far more bravado than brains. Michelin made a noncommittal response but the kid grabbed his sleeve, his eyes going soft and hooded. “How about you be my daddy for the night? We can make sure it’s your lucky night.” The kid winked. Ugh. Getting lucky wasn’t even remotely in the cards for his night. “No thanks.” He pulled away from the kid, scanning the cavernous space for signs of the private party room his friends had promised. And oh holy hell, knowing in the abstract that this place had go-go dancers was a far cry from actually seeing said dancers dispersed through the place on platforms and in cages and even on something resembling a trapeze. Gleaming bronze skin and tiny shorts everywhere he looked. Fuck the private room. I need a soda. Something to relieve his suddenly parched throat. He turned toward the main bar area and ran smack into one of the elevated dancers’ platforms. Two platforms flanked the opening of the club, directing the stream of traffic toward the bar, sort of like how a different sort of place might have large statues. Only instead of works of stone or ice, this…piece of art in front of Michelin was all man. And what a specimen he was. The dancer probably wasn’t much older than the kids waiting to get into the club, but there was nothing juvenile about his tall, ripped body or that juicy bubble butt that he worked to perfection the way Michelin’s guitar player did a solo—each muscle working in concert with the others, each wiggle carefully choreographed for maximum appeal. Said butt was encased in a pair of shorts. Or at least Michelin guessed that one would call them shorts—they were longer than underwear, but not by much, and made of a clingy, silky red material. The stitching did things to the guy’s package that shouldn’t be legal. Those muscular legs and that smooth, oiled chest also needed outlawing. The dancer had completed his look with thick, chunky combat boots, sunglasses, and a necklace with a medal on it. The boots and glasses upped the hotness factor to supernova, giving him an untouchable appeal that made it no surprise that he had a fair-sized crowd around his platform. Right as Michelin completed his muscle-by-muscle catalog of the guy, the dancer’s glasses slipped, revealing chocolaty eyes. His eyebrows went up, and the message he sent Michelin was unmistakable: You gonna stay there all night? Oh fuck. Michelin was blocking the line of traffic, and more important, blocking access to the platform for the patrons who wanted to slip tips in the guy’s waistband. Should he? He shoved a hand in his pocket, considering. Did he dare risk touching a piece of that gleaming skin? The lights reflecting off the dancer’s body totally made Michelin think of caramel dripping off flan—rich golden tones only enhanced by the contrast of the shiny black combat boots and his closely cropped black hair. What the fuck was the protocol in a situation like this? Hi, I’m sorry I’ve been eye-fucking you for the last ten minutes, here’s a five? He’d never been to a straight strip club either. Hell, he avoided most bars like the plague. And eye-fucking? He never ogled—and not just because it could be disastrous to his career. Most of the time he simply felt oblivious, but something about the dancer perked up parts of Michelin that usually stayed dormant. Two people shoved around him to stuff money in the dancer’s shorts, their arms trapping Michelin briefly in place. Coming here had been a giant mistake, just as Gloria had warned him. “You can’t go to that party! Gossip is already high about you mentoring two gay groups—” “They’re not gay groups. They just happen to have gay members,” Michelin said wearily, already tired of this latest publicist the label had shoved at him. “Whatever.” Gloria flipped her bony wrist. “They’re a risk you can’t take right now.” “It’s no big deal. There will be straight people at the party.” Michelin didn’t bother with the “other straight people” pretext. Gloria knew the drill. “There’s no risk in celebrating a friend’s birthday.” Except now, looking at the dancer, Michelin knew how wrong he’d been. This place was risk personified, and that dancer was the embodiment of everything Michelin denied himself. The dancer was a triple pour of top-shelf whiskey and Michelin couldn’t stop thinking about the heady rush touching him would bring. He should turn around now. Get back to his car now before he really embarrassed himself— “Mi—boss! There you are!” Oh thank you, small mercies, that Lucas stopped himself before he said Michelin’s name. Still, Michelin turned toward him warily. Play it cool, he tried to tell Lucas with his eyes. Lucas nodded, just slightly. Message received. Like everyone else in the club, Lucas was in his early twenties and about a decade younger than Michelin, but at least he was one of Michelin’s favorite kids, especially because he was here to lead Michelin away from the temptation that was the dancer with the sculpture-worthy ass. “The party room is back this way.” Lucas motioned with his hand. “Follow me.” “Babe!” A familiar rangy figure with a punk haircut draped himself over Lucas. “You found him.” Cody had a smile for Michelin, but his affection was all for his boyfriend. Ordinarily, Michelin loved being around the two of them and the other guys he mentored. Their energy was infectious, and their passion for music renewed his own. But tonight, Michelin’s stomach cramped as he followed the two of them to the rear of the club. Happiness practically rolled off them and their movements were totally in sync with each other. Once Michelin had thought he might get to know what that was like, but those days were long past. “Don’t even think about doing anything now. You’ve got too much riding on this year. Don’t be foolish. You’ve got the number one country song in America right now. Don’t mess with your momentum.” Gloria’s voice rang in his ears. Nope. No way was Michelin ever getting what his friends shared. No sense in pining for it either. He had a career he loved, friends who made him laugh, and family at his back. He’d known what the trade-offs were when he decided to trade his rock stardom for country crossover success. Tonight’s strange melancholy mood had him aching to get back home, push all these feelings into working on a new song. With any luck, Michelin could say happy birthday to Jalen, make a round of greetings to the other musicians he was mentoring, and get the hell out of Dodge. Preferably without running into the dancer again. He didn’t need another reminder of how little he fit into this world—or how much he wished life were a bit different.

Welcome author Dana Littlejohn today

Thanks for stopping by to talk a little about your writing! Let's jump right in.
When did you begin writing and why? I’ve been writing all my life really. I completed my first short story when I was twelve inspired by a dream I had.

Do you have a favorite genre? Is it the same genre you prefer to write?
I really like reading historicals and magical fantasy type books. I don’t write them because I don’t want to ever confuse one of my ideas with something I read and enjoyed.

Do certain themes and ideas tend to capture your writer’s imagination and fascinate you?
Not really. My mind tends to be all over the place. I like a variety of things.

Do you have a favorite author who introduced you to the genre?
I love Piers Anthony’s Xanth series. It ignited my love for fantasy and magical books. I continue to read that series. The first historical I read was by Bertice Small about her amazing character Skye O’Malley. It was the third in the series I think. It was good I searched for the first two, read the third again and then tracked down the rest. I’ve been a fan ever since.

What advantages or challenges does a writer in your genre face in today’s fiction market?
I think a major challenge is there are so many authors out there doing what I do. It’s hard coming up with different ways to make myself stand out. An advantage I think is you get to stretch your imagination and test boundaries to be able to stand out.

Tell me a little about the characters in Tri-Romance.
Opal and Pearl Jefferson are twin sisters. With their friend, Debra Flores, they own a beauty shop called Double Your Beauty. They have been single but openly on the dating scene for a while. Together they came up with their ‘no strings attached’ rule and made a pact to live by that standard and remain single. Unbeknownst to Opal and Debbie, Pearl had been dating the same man for many months. That relationship thrusts them into one of their own even. Even as they fight against it, all three women conquer personal demons, old habits and experience new things to find love and keep love in their lives.

Where’s the story set? How much influence did the setting have on the atmosphere/characters/development of the story?
This story takes place in Indianapolis Indiana and partially in New York City. Both of the city settings have a big influence on what’s happening around the characters, but growing up in Indiana give the characters a different mindset and makes their time in New York relevant to the story.

If you had to write your memoir in five words, what would you write?
This was a hard question. If I had to use just five words they would be eclectic, motivated, crafty, ‘crazy’ and open minded. Those seem to sum up how I approach life’s ups and downs, problems and day to day things.

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?
Man! All the time! I carry a pad with me at all times because conversations between characters jump up in my head so I write them down just so I can move with what I was supposed to be doing. Or situation would spark a story idea for me so I’d jot it down real quick before something else distracts me and I forget it. I even write down distinctive facial features or personality quirks that catch my eye to make my characters more real.

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?

I’ve got a few things coming later this year and next. Ivy’s Hot Shot (African American, suspenseful, contemporary, lightly erotic romance, 10/2016), The Fun Hose (African American, erotic romance, 1/2017) and The Seven Year Switch (BDSM, Female Dom, interracial romance, 8/2016) will be out in ebook and print later this year. I’m working on a vampire romance series called The Dioni Clan (erotic, interracial romance). I’m hoping to have it ready for release at the start of 2017.

Tri-Romance
Tri-Romance is a contemporary, interracial, multi-cultural, sensual, lightly erotic, woman’s lit romance novel.

Twin sisters, Opal and Pearl Jefferson, and their best friend Debra Flores were living blissfully by their ‘no strings attached’ rule, enjoying the many comforts of a good life. All was well in their world until Frank, Jake, Doug and Rakim entered into it. When one of the girls abandons their well-practiced rule and falls in love, does her decision throw a monkey wrench into the lives of everyone else around her? Or does it open up the possibility for love to capture them all?

Excerpt: PG13
“What if he just wants to be with me to see if, you know, the grass is greener?”
Her sister laughed. “It doesn’t take eleven months to check out the grass, honey. If that was his intention, he’d have checked out your grass and left a long time ago.”
“Stop making up reasons to sabotage the relationship,” Debbie told her. “You already have you guys married, divorced and you contemplating celibacy. You’re on an emotional roller coaster and nothing has even happened yet. You’ve made it these past eleven months. He’s obviously happy and so are you.”
“Yeah, but we haven’t been out. Mostly we’ve only kept to ourselves.”
“Oooh. So you think that he stayed in house the whole time you guys have been together?” her sister surmised. “Only walking out his door to go to work, huh?”
Opal looked at Debbie and they both laughed.
Pearl wrapped her arms around her chest. “I’m not stupid, Opal. I know better than that.”
“Pearl, if that man wanted another woman I’m sure he’s had plenty of opportunities to have one. Especially with all the good qualities you just named off. Women probably throw themselves at him all the time because of that, but he chooses to come back to you,” Debbie reminded her.
“At least give the man a chance to fuck up before you condemn him,” Opal suggested.
Pearl relaxed letting her arms fall to the table. “Yeah, I guess you guys are right.”
“Now, tell us why you left last night? Did his pretty face say something stupid?” Opal said giving her a nudge.
“No, his stupid roommate not only walked in on us, but he stood there watching us for who knows how long. I was so embarrassed I just ran up out of there. I didn’t want his roommate to find out about me like that.”
Debbie mouth dropped open. “He watched…without being invited? Mmm, hmm, he was definitely in violation for that one.”
Opal scoffed. “That’s messed up. Before you left you should have introduced the back of his head to one of the pots in the kitchen.”
Pearl chuckled. “Yeah, well, I was focused on getting out of there.”
“And what did your white boy say?”
“He was pretty pissed at Joe, that’s his roommate’s name, and he followed me to the door trying to get me to stay. He wants me to come over tonight, so he can make it up to me,” she said, fiddling with her fingers.
“And you’re going, right?”
Pearl shrugged.
“I don’t know, Pearl, if what you say is true, he doesn’t sound half bad to me.” Debbie looked at Opal.
“Don’t look at me. I’m reserving judgment until after I meet him face to face.”
Pearl sighed. “I don’t know. I’m still afraid.”
“You’re just gonna have to suck it up. That’s the risk you take when you fall in love. If it doesn’t work you chalk it up as another lesson learned in the never ending game of life.”
“That’s easy for you to say when you’re on the outside looking in.”
“All right, if you feel that way make him stay. Daddy used to tell us we were Jeffersons and if we wanted something we had to work to make it a reality, Pearl.”
Pearl tapped her chin as she thought then grinned. “Hmm, so I should let him make it up to me?”
Debbie nodded. “Absolutely. Show that slimy roommate of his you can still hold your head up high.”
Opal slapped the table. “So it’s settled. First go show that roommate what you’re made of and then get your Jake ready to meet us. It’s way overdue. No more stalling.”
Pearl nodded. “I know. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you guys sooner.” She leaned across the table and grabbed their hands.
“No more secrets, all right?” Debbie said.
“Okay.” Pearl looked at her sister.
“No more lies…ever.”
“No more secrets, no more lies,” Pearl promised. She sent a look to the clock then stood. “I have to go. I’ll talk to Jake tonight, okay? Love you guys, see you later.”
“Bye. Come on, Chica. We should get going, too.”

Welcome Kiru Taye & Benjamin Moss from Scars

Please give a warm welcome to Benjamin Moss from Scars, Secrets and soon to be published Scores by Kiru Taye today as we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?
It's nice to meet you Dawn. I am Benjamin Moss. Dog of war. Maverick. Tycoon. Gentleman. Husband. Master. And more.
Kiru came looking for a dark and brooding hero to write about. She got a lot more than she bargained for. I took her on a journey she'd never been before, exposed her to a whole new world she'd hadn't explored previously. I think she's a better author for it, even if I say so myself. *smirks*

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?
Selina is one of the bravest and most generous persons I know. Being with her makes me want to be a better man. Her presence brings me peace. And sometimes I catch a glimpse of pain in her eyes and I know I will do whatever it takes to soothe that pain and protect her.

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner(s)?
Well, if you're talking wild, you don't get any wilder than the African veld. I recently took Selina back to my homeland in South Africa. Let's just say we got pretty wild and dirty. You'll have to pick up a copy of Scores when it comes out for all the details. *winks*

On our wedding day in Scars, I made Selina wear a vibrating egg throughout our wedding dinner and after party. I needed to distract her so she would stop panicking. It worked. *smirks*

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?
At work it's boxer briefs. At home it's commando.

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure fire trick they can do to seduce you?
A willing Selina on her knees turns me as hard as granite.

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed?
Selina has sensitive nipples. A little nip and suck and she's ready to come, until I whip out the nipple clamps. She wasn't a fan of those at first. *grins*

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Secrets?
Honestly, I don't get embarrassed that easily. But there were a few painful moments. One of which was when Selina returned the charm bracelet I gave her on our wedding night and walked out on me in the presence of my sister and her friend. That cut real deep.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Selina holds my heart. Her submission and trust didn't come easy. She is no meek lamb. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Our journey isn't over yet. We both still have to deal with our pasts and there are people who want to tear us apart. They don't say "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" for nothing. But I'm a rebel with a cause and I will fight for the woman I love. Read Scars and Secrets to know how we got here and pick up a copy of Scores to find out how things turn out.

Thank you for having me, Dawn. I need to get back to Selina now. She owes me for doing this interview and it's time to collect. Afskeid!

Thank you Benjamin Moss for joining us on 'Meet the Character' day here at Dawn’s Reading Nook Blog. You can find all of Kiru Taye books at http://kirutaye.com/
