Welcome Annette Snyder today

Perseverance is the Key-Annette Snyder—Novelist

I knew I was a writer the day I woke up with a story idea in my head, wrote it down and it worked.  I was surprised that I actually wrote an entire book.  The fact that I’ve now written so many different stories, and the ideas keep coming, still is a shocker.

I want to tell anyone who ever thought of writing a book or memoir to just do it.  The magic formula is that there is no magic formula.   Write because it comes to you and if it amounts to more, great.  If you have questions, most everyone in the writing world is willing to help or knows someone who can.

The hardest thing for me to learn was curbing my point of view switches.  I’m always trying to control which character is doing what and when.  I had a great editor who showed me how to fix head hopping and now I can control it at least a little.  My problem is really that my brain works faster than my fingers.

Because I’m a writer, I do all that writing stuff plus promo and keeping up with the writing world plus work a real job.  I don’t have as much time to read as I’d like.  I save my reading days for my vacations.  If I wasn’t an author, I’d be doing laundry and dishes—maybe dusting—scratch that, never dusting. Here’s a hint, if you don’t move anything, you never have to dust because you can’t tell the furniture is dusty.

If you’re into Historicals, you might want to pick up something from my WWII Viveka’s War Series. This line begins during the Depression years with two friends and follows the decisions they make while growing to adulthood starting with the first books Viveka’s War and Eureka Springs.  My third novel in this series, releasing this month, is Respectable Affair.  This particular book clues readers into where the story began.  I got the idea from a reviewer of Eureka Springs who wrote, “Who is Virginia Seidle and why was she single?” That’s when Virgie started talking and the third in the series was born.

Here’s the blurb for Respectable Affair:

Broken promises affect everyone.
A relationship with an unsavory criminal was only the beginning of Virginia Seidle’s terrible run with men.
Would her life always be shadowed by previous mistakes?
Would a career change turn bad luck around or was this boss just another man to avoid?
As a husband, Nolan promised to love in sickness and health.
As a father, his mission is to protect his son.
An affair?  What woman deserved the backyard gossip that surrounded a secret relationship?
A pact of friendship and a secret love—was that all Virgie and Nolan had?
Was protecting the future of a boy and a madwoman the most important?
Can two people in love sacrifice everything to keep an affair respectable for the sake of family?

Excerpt for Respectable Affair:
Was Truman right?  Was Frank Walters the person who robbed Main Street Liquor?  To Virginia, it just didn’t seem possible.  Frank was with her all night or at least until a few hours after the basketball game at the high school.
“Let’s go meet up with Hank and Pete.”
That’s what he proposed when they discussed the post game party with Frank’s friends in the country and Virgie declined.  It was, after all, a school night and she had to study for her senior finals.  “Don’t you have to look for a job?” she asked.
“Sure, but I got it covered.”  He leaned over and kissed her hard on the mouth before turning back to the steering wheel.  “See you tomorrow.”
Virgie had no reason to doubt that Frank was going to the party to drink beer because that’s where he said he’d be.  Why would Truman say Frank robbed the store when Frank was probably hanging out with his buddies?
“Virgie,” Truman whispered, “I was outside the store talking on the pay phone.  I saw him there.  Where do you think he got the beer in the first place?  He isn’t old enough to buy and he doesn’t have any money.”
Sibling disagreements weren’t anything new between Virgie and her older brother but they’d become far more frequent since Virgie started dating Frank Walters.  With this latest bit of obvious gossip, Truman annoyed Virgie even more.  She squinted and felt the muscles in her jaw tense.  Truman stood at the foot of her bed and she slammed her book shut wanting to throw it at him.  “Isn’t it dark out?  You probably couldn’t see.  I say it was a case of mistaken identity.  I know you don’t like Frank, but this, making stuff up like this, that’s really a low blow.”
“I don’t like Frank because he’s using you.  He quit school.  He doesn’t work.  His friends are no accounts. He takes you for granted and I know you give him money, and whatever else, whenever he wants it.”
Virgie picked up her bed pillow and threw it at him.  “Shut up!  You don’t know what you’re talking about!”  She didn’t care if her parents woke up and heard them fighting.  When the truth came out, Truman would have to apologize.   “Besides, if I’m giving him money, why would he have to rob a liquor store?  And one more thing!  Frank and I love each other.  What do you have to say about that?”
Truman turned to open the door.  “I’d say that tomorrow he’ll be in jail and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.  Let’s just hope dad and mom don’t find out that you were with him tonight or you’ll be in deep trouble.”
“It isn’t going to matter.  You’re wrong about Frank and they won’t care.  You’ll see.”  She was surprised he closed the door instead of slamming it.  If she were in his shoes, she’d slam it so hard his eardrums would burst.

Annette’s Bio:
I call a small town in the heart of the Midwest, habitat of cornfields and combines, my home.  In an old house, with my husband and two dogs, I sit and write.
My four grown children visit often and the grandkids cause beautiful havoc.
All my life, I paid attention to things around me, stories from my parents, friends, grandparents and great-grandparents and one day I compiled those stories together and wrote a book.  It was that one book that started a wave of ideas and the story characters just keep pestering me so I continue to write all the time, work when necessary and vacation as much as possible.

Sneak Peek into Undercover Lovers by Fiona McGior

Undercover Lovers by Fiona McGrier
Spies in Love Series, Book 2
Whiskey Creek Press

Ameena has never been able to forget what she endured on her last assignment before she left the agency.  She was the only female agent to live through what The Executioner did to his victims, but she still bears the scars, both physical and psychological.  When he escapes from his prison cell, her ex-handler brings two agents with him to tell her that one or the other will be her shadow until her torturer is caught again...only this time he will allow her to kill him.  Having kept herself too busy for romance, she is caught off-guard by the sudden insertion into her life of two gorgeous men, one who actively pursues her and one whom she finds more attractive for his shyness.  Will she live long enough to make a choice?  And is that the end of the story...or the beginning?

Excerpt set-up: Ameena has just spent the day working hard, under the watchful eye of one of the agents who is guarding her.  She is exhausted but hungry.

So it was already after eight at night when Ameena and Tomás left the soundstage.  Tomás made a point of opening doors and letting Ameena precede him through them, then staying close beside her.  At one point he was so close she felt his hot breath raising the hairs on the back of her neck.
"Hey, back off, dude!  Let me breathe."
He inhaled deeply, blowing gently into her hair as he exhaled.
     "Why?  You smell so good..."
     Ameena grinned at him.
"And you are so full of shit, no wonder your eyes are brown!"
She had stopped to click open the door of her car with her hand-held fob.  Since Tomás was right behind her, she put her hand on her hip and faced him.
"Obviously you are going to have to go around to the other side of the car to get in...unless you plan on sitting on my lap while I drive?"
He pressed his pelvis against her upper thigh.
"I'd rather have you sitting on my lap."
     Ameena rolled her eyes.
"Just get in the car, Romeo!  I'm starved and we have to pick up something to eat then get back to my condo to meet the other guys."
Tomás smiled as he circled the car to get in the passenger side.  He pulled out his cell phone as they were putting their seat belts on.
"Shall I tell them we will be leaving in an hour, to give us some time alone before they get there?"
     Ameena glared at him.
"Uh...no?  I don't know how you guys are going to split the shadow-duty, but if you are going to be with me during the day, you are going to have to get used to getting up really early and having long days.  That's been my life while I've been working on this damn video and it's not done yet.  Until it is, no late nights.  Early to bed, then early to wake up and get your ass in gear."
He raised one eyebrow with a leer.
"I like that early to bed part...and as for your ass..."
     "Don't you ever stop?"
"Actually, no.  In fact, many women have compared me to the Energizer Bunny. "
     Ameena laughed out loud.
"This is the place I'm running into to grab some dinner.  You wait in the car so I can leave it double-parked.  I'm getting a taco salad and some chips with salsa.  Do you want me to get you anything?"
     Tomás wrinkled his nose.
     "Is it authentic, or faux-Mexican?"
     "Are you hungry or not?"
He leered at her, then winked.
     "Oh, I'm hungry all right."
******
When they get back to her apartment with the food, Tomas makes his move on Ameena and she almost gives into him because he's so good at seduction and she has been alone for a long time, trying to heal from what happened to her.  But she is more attracted to the other agent...

"I said no, and I meant no. This is so not going to happen."
Tomás stopped moving and tilted his head, smiling at her.
"You mean not until later?  After we eat?  Though I must admit my own appetites are dueling with each other right now, and I'm not sure which one I need to satisfy first."
Ameena shook her head again, more definitively.
"I told you, Tomás, this is not going to happen.  I don't need any more complications in my life right now."
     He shrugged.
"I'm not a complicated man, Ameena.  I want you...you want me.  It's simple.  We satisfy each other, then life goes on.  Simple."

But nothing in the lives of secret agents is ever simple!

Getting to know Robert Collins

Why don't you start with telling us a little about yourself? What genre do you write in and why?

I write in mainly two. Locally I’m best known for writing nonfiction about Kansas history. My passion is writing science fiction and fantasy. I’ve sold over 80 short stories, and had three novels published.

What comes first for you when you sit down to write a book? Plot or Characters?

I’m a story person. Characters are fine, but I need some sort of plot to get going.

Do you "cast" your characters using pictures or actors to help inspire you when you're writing?

No, but I have a good aural memory. I can “give” my characters voices from where ever I want and “hear” them. In some ways these are first drafts that get written in my head before I type one word.

How long does it take you to finish a book from start to finish?

That really depends. It took me twenty years of off-and-on work to get my second novel, Lisa’s Way, into its final form. On the other hand, last year I wrote two sequels to Lisa’s Way; one became four short stories, the other is the “second book.”

Tell us a bit about your latest book, and what inspired you to write such a story.

My latest is Monitor, published by Whiskey Creek Press. It’s about a woman who decides to stop her fundamentalist society from coming about by going back in time and becoming a superhero. Also figuring in the story is a mutant teenager training to be a hero but conflicted about where she’s headed, and a mutant villain with big ambitions.
I’m not quite sure where the story came from. I’m sure reading a little of the Marvel Universe in the 1980s played a role. In the end, through, it became the story I wanted to tell.

How much does reader reaction mean to you as an author? Do you read your own reviews?

I like readers coming up to me and telling me if they like my books. As to reviews, I only care about those by people I respect. I saw an ugly review for one of my railroad books at Amazon. Exploring deeper, I was appalled at learning that some reviewers trash books because the author is a woman, or gay, or whose politics are different from them.  I don’t worry about reviews generally; after all, its sales and not reviews that bring in the money.

What are you working on now? Anything you want to tell us about?

I’m always working on something. I’d like to sell the sequel to Lisa’s Way. I’m thinking about putting out another collection of short stories.  And I’ve been researching some big nonfiction projects.

What so you see for the future of publishing and e-books?

I think as it gets harder and harder to sell to the major publishers, the small press and self-publishing will have to be taken more seriously by everyone, from reviewers to writers’ groups. There have to be the same opportunities for the author whose book sells a few thousand copies as there are for best-selling authors.

As to e-books, I think the technology is making progress. The devices are getting better, and the idea of reading a book on a device is catching on. But the book is bulletproof technology: it doesn’t need special light; it doesn’t need a power source; and it doesn’t break if dropped. The e-book will have to be just like that to completely replace the print book.

Where can readers find you on the ‘net for more information on you, your books and other fun stuff?

First, there’s my website: http://members.cox.net/rlckansas/frontpage.html.

I also have a Face Book page, and I’m a member of Book Town.

Monitor: www.whiskeycreekpress.com/store/

Monitor excerpt: The computer on the only desk in the room beeped loudly.  The screen changed from its normal white color.  Blocky red letters appeared for an instant, followed by a blue symbol.  The view then changed to the Oval Office of the White House.  Filling much of the screen was solemn, middle-aged man with blonde hair, blue eyes, and an open, honest face.
“Fellow citizens, I come before you with news that is grave, yet should fill all of your souls with joy.  Five minutes ago, our foolish enemies launched a limited nuclear strike at our forces around the world, and at the capitol of this great Christian nation.”
It can’t be happening now, Broeder thought.  I’m not ready.  I haven’t thought out my plans.  I haven’t done the research.
She looked at the pod.
Do not panic,” the man continued.  “I will be taking refuge momentarily, and we will try to save everyone we can in the city.  Residents of Washington, I urge you to proceed at once to your shelters.
This may sound like dire news.  It will not be so dire.  I have authorized our forces to launch a full retaliatory strike against our foes.  With our might, God will strike down those who have rejected Him, and cast their wicked souls into the pit of Hell.  After four decades of Heavenly struggle, righteousness will finally crush sin and evil.
I will transmit another broadcast soon.  Until then, I ask all of your to pray for our victory.  God bless America, and every Christian in it.”
The blue symbol of the office of the President returned.  A male voice came over the intercom.  “All personnel are ordered to gather in the main dining hall for a prayer meeting.”
Corwin turned towards the door.  “Dr. Broeder!  Come on!”
You go,” she replied from inside the closet.  “I’ll be along later.”
Anger bubbled throughout her mind as she removed her clothes and put on the suit.  Don’t these fools understand what’s going to happen? she asked rhetorically.  The Europeans and their allies are going to notice our full strike within a few minutes, and they’ll launch everything they have.  Do these idiots actually believe that they wouldn’t?
Of course not.  We’ve long since stopped considering other points of view.  We have God on our side, so whatever we say is right.
A whole nation blindly following the prejudices and morals of the ignorant President, Joshua Clairborne.  A bigoted brat raised by his bigoted father.
Broeder took one more long look at the pod.
You won’t be able to deny me a Class-One pass because I’m a woman, she vowed silently.  You won’t be able to keep from living where I want to because I’m a scientist.  You can’t keep me from reading what I want to, or watching whatever I want to, or talking to anyone I want to.
You can’t keep strangling the truth.
