“I’m okay. I’ll be okay,” he said into her
neck, but Eric didn’t sound convincing, and I realized what a jerk I’d been.
Spewing shit about sex while his dog was dying. I should’ve offered an
emotional connection. Empathy. Something. Instead, I made it about me.
She
broke the connection and gave Boomer some attention. “What did the doctor say?”
“A few days. We can only make her
comfortable now.”
She kissed the dog and eased her back
down. “I’m sorry, baby,” she whispered. Then she got up to face Eric. “You did
really good with her. You know that, right?”
He shrugged and shoved his hands into his
pockets. No, I didn’t think Eric realized any good thing he’d ever done.
Rosa opened her mouth, then shut it when
she saw me. “And why is he still here? And wearing your clothes. Did you two
have sex?”
“Rosa!” Eric admonished.
I liked the shade of pink lifting to his
face. “That’s none of your business.”
He didn’t quickly say no. That was
something to file for later inspection.
“Ohmygod, you’re blushing. You did have
sex. Finally. Though, I didn’t know you were into men, but hey, I do not
judge.”
Eric rolled his eyes as he dropped onto
the sofa. “Oh, God, you’re giving me a headache.”
“So who is your new lover?” she asked,
walking toward me.
“Thomas Raine,” I answered.
She turned to Eric who remained on the
sofa. “Are you bringing him to the dance?”
“No,” Eric said dryly.
“The sheriff will be there.”
“Hell no,” he said.
She chuckled.
The mention of the sheriff got my
attention. “What’s this dance?” I asked. Not that I’d ever expected to be
interested in going to a small-town dance. I couldn’t say I’d ever been to one
to judge.
“Oh, it’s a fundraiser for our local
library,” Rosa said. “You should come.”
I suddenly wanted to go.
“Rosa, he’s a stranger,” Eric said.
Rosa snorted. “Honey, he’s wearing your
clothes. I think the stranger danger of whatever this is”—she waved her hand
between us— “already left the building.”
