My rating for Cam's Best Friend: 3.5 stars
Cameron Gamble is trying to start over. New town, new business and a new life. Except each night he gets terrible nightmares that have haunted him the last three years. His past relationship had left the deep emotional scars that haunt him today and it will take the love of a stray chocolate lab to show him that he isn't alone anymore.
I haven't read a Jaxx Steele book before until I picked up Cam's Best Friend and now I wonder, why in the heck haven't I discovered this author before? The story line is wonderful. This author gives the reader a little back story, then the meat of it comes out with Cameron. What I loved about this one was how the character Cameron is complex yet vulnerable. His past relationship has haunted him in nightmares for the last three years and I felt for him deeply. If no one knows how an abusive relationship can leave emotional scars, well they haven't walked in my shoes at all. I felt for Cam as he tried to find the peace that has eluded him until he meets Mel, a chocolate lab one day. From then on, these two are friends and Cameron finds the friendship he craves with the dog. Except Mel is no ordinary dog. He is something oh so much more. I don't want to go into details, especially since this was a short story and if you haven't read this yet, I won't want to spoil the surprise for you. Yes, the ending is a little loose and there are a few plot strings that I am really hoping this author comes back to in order to finish them up but other wise Cam's Best Friend was a satisfying read.
This author does a great job in keeping the reader glued to
the pages, eager to see what will happen next for Cam
and Mel as well as hoping Cam finds the peace he worked
so hard to find. There were a few secondary characters that brought some
lightness to the pages and had me smiling, more than once.
I look forward to checking out this author’s back list for
more great stories to enjoy. If you want a short, enjoyable story to read, then
grab this little gem and settle in for a few hours of
reading pleasure.
