Synopsis

It's the summer of 1967 and the Sexual Offences Act has just decriminalized consensual gay sex in private between two men over twenty-one. Percy Wright and his friend Les Baker have both taken temporary jobs teaching English as a foreign language in London during their long summer break from teaching at a rural boarding school near Oxford.

Thirty-three year old Percy is keen to soak up some theatre, music and general culture, whilst the younger Les is also keen to experience the varied gay social scene. When Les picks up a man called Phil at the box office of the Albert Hall when he goes to buy tickets to a Promenade Concert, Percy inadvertently gets thrown together with Adrian Framlingham, Phil’s friend.

Adrian is all the things Percy likes in a man…funny, kind and steady. When Les gets hurt, Percy turns to Adrian for support, but as the end of the summer looms it seems as if their affair will come to a natural end.

What will happen when Percy goes back to his everyday life as a house-master? Will he and Adrian stay in touch? Does he even want a long-distance relationship when arranging to meet someone for sex is still illegal, even if the act itself is not?

A 20k novella that’s set five years before Taking Stock. Stand alone.

Content Warning: secondary character suffers off-screen assault/implied rape

“Shall we go for a walk in Hyde Park this evening?” Les said with forced casualness, shoving toast into the toaster in a bleary fashion.

“Tonight?” Percy said. It was a Thursday.

“One of the blokes I was talking to at the William at the weekend mentioned it. Said it’s an interesting place of an evening.”

He put the emphasis on interesting.

“Les…,” Percy was reluctant. “I’m not sure it’s my kind of thing.”

“What, getting your rocks off isn’t your kind of thing?” Les said, slightly snippily. “Don’t pretend you haven’t been having it off with Adrian for the last fortnight.”

Percy didn’t have anything to say back to that.

“We’re back to school in two weeks,” Les said, almost wearily. “And I want to have as much fun as possible before I get shut up in that damned boarding house with sixty adolescent terrors for another year.”

Percy watched him, steadily.

“This is…so different,” Les continued. “I don’t want to miss anything.”

“Didn’t you have a social set at university?” Percy asked. Not that he had himself, really.

“In York!?” Les said with an derisive huffing noise. “Not these kind of friends. I just want…something, Perce.”

Percy could understand that. “I know, he said. “I know you do. But…is Hyde Park after dark really what you’re looking for?”

Les sat at the small table and focused on buttering his toast fiercely. “I won’t know if I don’t go, will I?” he said. “It’s okay, Perce. You don’t have to come. I know it’s not really your scene.”

Les was so much younger, sometimes, Percy thought.

“What about Phil?” he asked.

“Nice bloke,” Les said, dismissively. “I don’t want a wife, though, Percy. I want some fun.”

Percy sighed. “Well, what time are you thinking of going?” he asked. “I’m meeting Adrian. He’s managed to get tickets for Hello Dolly at Drury Lane.” This would be the fourth time they had deliberately arranged to meet. After their first outing to the Prince William in Hampstead nearly a fortnight ago, they’d met in the week at a pub close to Adrian’s offices after work and gone on and had a meal. And on Sunday they’d begun the day by walking along the Embankment, had some chips in a pub they’d come upon and then spent the afternoon in Regent’s Park. It had been a really lovely day out. He’d felt guilty leaving Les on his own, but Les seemed happy enough going up to the Prince William by himself, once he’d been introduced around the weekend before.

“No idea what time,” said Les, interrupting his memories. I was going to come home and have some tea and then go on out. So you can still come along if you change your mind.”

Percy shook his head. “I won’t change my mind. I’ve got to be out of the door at about six, so I was going to come home, bolt a bit of toast and change, and then go on out. We’re having supper somewhere afterwards, I think.”

Les made grunting assent.

Percy was worried about him. The huge platter of different places and experiences that had opened to them over the last month were so different from anything either of them had experienced before. Percy was much more cautious than Les. He didn’t seem to have the same need to grab everything with both hands and try it all out. He was a decade older, he supposed. Whether than meant it had drained out of his system without him noticing whilst he was busy trying to hide it all, or whether it just meant he was a bit more sensible than he would have been a decade ago, he didn’t know.

What he did know what that in his opinion, Les was going to get in to trouble. And Percy wasn’t prepared to be dragged in to trouble with him.

“You will be careful, won’t you?” he said, diffidently. “Just…be careful, Les.”

Les looked over at him. “I’ll be careful. And you…you have a good time, yeah? If I don’t see you before you go out. He seems like a really nice bloke.”

Percy smiled. “He is. He’s a really nice bloke.”

Welcome Tinnean today to the Reading Nook

Please give a warm welcome to author Tinnean today to the Reading Nook blog as we chat with them about their latest book, Lagoon of Dreams and more.

Thanks for stopping by to talk a little about your writing! Let's jump right in. When did you begin writing and why?

Thanks so much for having me once again, Dawn. It’s always a pleasure visiting the CafĂ©! As my bio says, I started writing in 3rd grade. Another fhird-grader wrote a very long poem, and I said if she can do it, so can I. That’s pretty much all I remember about that, which is probably all for the good. For the same reason I started writing m/m in 1999. A friend challenged me to slash David and Kane from Love and Human Remains, and I said, “Hold my beer.” The rest, as they say, is history.

Do you have a favorite genre? Is it the same genre you prefer to write?

I love anything m/m, as long as there’s very little angst.  (I blame the soaps I used to watch with my mom—could Lisa Hughes or Erica Kane have more problems?—and all the Harlequins I read back in the day for my reluctance to read angst.) And yes, m/m is my genre. I’ve written historical, contemporary, paranormal, dystopian, scifi. As long as there are two guys (or two gals, I’ve written f/f also) I’m there.

Do certain themes and ideas tend to capture your writer’s imagination and fascinate you?

They do. In spite of the fact angst isn’t my favorite thing, I’m especially drawn to the misunderstood hero, (the majority of my MCs are misunderstood, but all it takes is a smart guy to come along and see what no one else has the smarts to realize is right in front of them.) I’m also exceptionally fond of the unerringly faithful character, who’ll do anything for his friend/lover.

How do you balance long-term thinking vs. being nimble in today's market?

What’s this “nimble” of which you speak? LOL I wish I could jump on a bandwagon or even get it out of the barn before anyone else, but I write as my characters tell me. Shifters had been around for quite some time before I finally got my story, Destiny’s End, in the works. The same goes for vampires, Mpreg, and dystopian. But hey! I’ve gotten there!

How do you find readers in today's market?

Stand around and look intriguing? Seriously, I post on Facebook and Dreamwidth—I stay away from Live Journal as much as I can since the Russians took it over—occasionally tweet something about a new release, and offer free stories not only on my brand new website ( https://tinnean.webs.com/ ) but at JMS Books also. And I sincerely hope someone will be interested enough to want to read them.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

Hook first, definitely, and then the characters pop in to visit. DH and I once received a Christmas card and had no clue who it was from. This became the premise for Greeting Cards, which I hope to re-release in the fairly near future. In another instance—have you heard Lesley Gore’s song Judy’s Turn to Cry? (It’s the follow-up to It’s My Party.) The line “One night I saw them kissing at a party, so I kissed some other guy” had me wondering how that “some other guy” felt about being grabbed and kissed and then knocked down by Johnny. Eventually this became Love Potion #9, a 9th anniversary story for JMS Books.

How do you create your characters?

The story generally dictates their appearance. I’ll be typing away, and suddenly something I’ve written will reveal my character is a blue-eyed blond, or a brunet, or a redhead. Sometimes, it’s just serendipitous. Recently I happened to go looking for photos for the new cover for Two Lips, Indifferent Red and found a yummy picture I felt was perfect. This particular model had a dimple at the corner of his mouth, and I loved it so much I went back and added it to the story. The story will also dictate what kind of family the character has, his (or her) job, or, if they’re in school, what courses they take. I’m just going along for the ride.

What's on the top of your TBR pile right now?

My cell phone is jam-packed with ebooks, but on top of the pile is Kim Fielding’s Creature and The Knocker on Death’s Door by Ellis Peters.

Tell me a little about the characters in Lagoon of Dreams.

Lagoon of Dreams is my newest release. It’s the Mpreg I finally got around to writing.

David Knight is a scientist who’s fascinated by lungfish and believes they should be studied if man is to go into space one day. His family is wealthy, so he can have pretty much everything except the one thing he loves most—diving. A shark attack left him with a fear of the ocean. He’s also very lonely, (another one of my poor little rich boys) in spite of all the men he takes to his bed.

Dinah Smythe is the scientist who saved David from the shark that attacked him. She may actually put in an appearance in the sequel, since she’s related to characters who appeared in the first two books of the Strange, Strange World series.

Sam Lucas is gay pretending to be straight. He wants to marry Dinah because her father is a baronet, and he thinks that will give him a certain cachet, but he’d prefer to have David in his bed.

Carlos Avila is the archeologist who draws David to Brazil, telling him he needs his expertise as an ichthyologist. Could be he has an ulterior motive, though.

And then there’s the captain of the space ship Dev’o’s Honor, who visits David’s dreams. More about him, though, I sayeth not. ;-)

Where’s the story set? How much influence did the setting have on the atmosphere/characters/development of the story?

My main character is something of a globetrotter, and the story reflects that. He’s gone diving in the South Pacific, spends time in South Africa, returns back to the States, and eventually winds up in Brazil, where he goes from Rio to Pesadelo Bay (totally fictitious, it translates to Nightmare Bay) to Manaus and then up the Amazon River to eventually arrive at the Lagoon of Dreams. The “when” is actually a predominant character, since this takes place in 1955, setting up the sequel, which will take place in 1977.

If you had to write your memoir in five words, what would you write?

She lives, therefore she writes. Or conversely, She writes, therefore she lives. ;-)

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?

All the time! This is why I carry a notebook with me, and if I’m lucky, I’ll be able to actually decipher my notes. However, I will confess there have been times when I’ve been caught short and had to make a voice reminder on my cell phone.

What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?

I have the rights to the books put out by another publisher, and I’ll be getting those out little by little in the next six months or so. About half of them will be re-released by JMS Books, while I’ll self-publish the other half. In between that, I hope to get out the sequel to Lagoon of Dreams, Rainbows in Your Eyes. This will also be Book 4 of the Strange, Strange World series.

So… that’s my world, kiddies. Welcome to it, and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do!

Book blurb: David Knight has been plagued by dreams his entire life, only to have all memory of them vanish when he awakens. Now the dreams are coming with more frequency, and they seem to be drawing him to the Amazon.

A scientist with a PhD in ichthyology and a dedication to learning all he can about lungfish, whose existence dates back to the Devonian era, David is determined to see what the Amazon holds. His hopes seem about to be answered when Dr. Carlos Avila contacts him. It seems the Brazilian archeologist discovered the remains of a previously undiscovered species on a tributary of the Amazon, and he'd like nothing better than for David to join the expedition to see if more of the creature can be found.

Of course David leaps at the opportunity and flies to Pesadelo Bay to join the mismatched team. Once there, he discovers not only does Dr. Avila have his own agenda, but a former conquest as well as a friend who'd saved his life years before are part of the team and are engaged to be married.

Meanwhile, the need to sail up the Amazon to find what ... or who ... is calling him there has become more and more pressing, and David must decide which is the most important -- learning what Dr. Avila really is searching for, or finding the answer to his dreams?

Excrpt:

I didn’t usually dream twice in the same night, but this time I did. In this dream, I was once again a young boy, and as such had the reactions of a child.
The corridors of Dev’o’s Honor dripped with moisture, and the lights dimmed and flickered periodically. I skipped along beside my captain and listened avidly as he told me of the creatures that lived on his home world, either swimming in the muddy-brown waters that covered three quarters of his planet or climbing the escarpments that soared into the ochre skies.
I listened—until a crew member sauntered over to join us, and when my captain smiled at him, I saw how much he cared about this being.
David, my captain said, not noticing my reaction. This is my chief engineer.
A flare of jealousy stabbed through me, and I scowled at the chief engineer. Hello. I greeted him grudgingly.
Terran. The chief engineer curled his lip at me and gave a dismissive nod.
The captain was my friend. I curled my own lip back at him, pleased when he seemed surprised. I’d seen my father regard someone who worked under him with similar disdain. I found myself wishing the chief engineer would be one of the crew who never returned from a mission. And then I felt myself turn cold, shocked to my toes by this unspeakable wish. Never in my life had I been jealous—it was an unfamiliar emotion in my family.
I was so ashamed of myself, I drew my mental shield around my horrid thoughts, effectively closing out my friend and—
—gasped as I woke up.
Or had I? Somehow, it seemed as if I were still wrapped in the dream, still on the battered ship, limping through space.
I could feel the captain’s attempts to speak with me, and I rebuffed them. He was puzzled, and more than that, saddened.
Captain. His chief engineer demanded his attention.
What is it? He sounded impatient, but I couldn’t permit myself to feel any sort of pleasure over that because he’d turned to face the man at his side. Not when something dangerous might be going on.
The chief engineer sent a triumphant look my way, although he was careful the captain didn’t see.
I stiffened, tempted to stick my tongue out at the chief engineer. I wouldn’t, though. That was childish, and I was a big boy. While the two men talked, I walked farther down the corridor, away from my friend and his… friend.
The captain thought I was a good boy, but this revelation would demonstrate how very wrong he was if he ever learned of it, and that was something I couldn’t let happen.
I sternly lectured myself on the proper behavior of friends, until I finally felt it was safe enough to reach out and touch his mind again.
David. What happened? The relief my friend accidentally projected was so great I was filled with self-loathing, but again I shielded my emotions from him.
I’m sorry. I was distracted. Some problems gnawing on my mind.
My friend nodded, not questioning the fact there had been problems before, and I had never prevented him access to my thoughts.
The chief engineer snorted. We have more problems than this youngling could ever imagine.
My captain growled at him. And you have more tasks to see to than to tease him. Go follow my instructions.
The chief engineer stalked off, and although he’d closed his mind to me, I didn’t need to distinguish what he was muttering under his breath to understand it wasn’t complimentary to me.
My captain smiled and slid his arm around my shoulders. Let me show you the ship’s felix. She just had a litter of kits. He urged me down the corridor.
It never occurred to me to ask why his chief engineer had interrupted us, something the man had never done before, and the captain didn’t offer any reasons.
And I never considered it could be a two-way street—if I could shut him out, then he could just as surely shut me out….

Bio: Tinnean has been writing since the 3rd grade, where she was inspired to try her hand at epic poetry. Fortunately, that epic poem didn't survive the passage of time; however, her love of writing not only survived but thrived, and in high school she became a member of the magazine staff, where she contributed a number of stories.

It was with the advent of the family's second computer – the first intimidated everyone – that her writing took off, enhanced in part by fanfiction, but mostly by the wonder that is copy and paste.

While involved in fandom, she was nominated for both Rerun and Light My Fire Awards. Now she concentrates on her original characters and has been published by Nazca Plains, Dreamspinner, JMS Books, Wilde City, and Less Than Three Press, as well as self-publishing six books to date. Recent novels have received honorable mention in the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Rainbow Awards. Two of the 2014 submissions were finalists, and a 2017 submission was runner-up in the historical romance category.

A New Yorker at heart, she resides in SW Florida with her husband, a desktop, and two laptops.

Book Spotlight and Giveaway~ Beholden

Length: 42,000 words approx.

Cover Design: Written Ink Designs

Publisher: JMS Publishing

Blurb

Julian Thomas made the unpopular decision to become Beholden and focus his magic only on scrying. Because of it, he's the best at his job and the top scryer for the Department of Extranormal and Magical Affairs. Which why Investigations Agent Wes Caldwell goes right to Julian for help locating a missing person.

When Wes needs to use his magic to boost Julian's, they find a magical resonance between them that quickly leads to more. Julian doesn't want to move too fast, but Wes knows Julian is it for him. He's fine with waiting, as long as Julian stays close as they work through it.

But then Julian falls ill, and it's clear there's a magical reason. Wes will stop at nothing to find out what's plaguing Julian, and when they realize just how deep the plot goes, they have more questions than answers. Magic is increasing in the world, and no one can figure out why. Julian and Wes have found love, but will it be enough to get them through what's to come?

Excerpt

"Better?" Wes asked eventually. "Feel more centered and focused now?"

I nodded. Then I sat back a little so I could see his face. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and tucked my fingers down the collar of his dress shirt, not wanting to lose too much contact with his skin. "Yes, thank you."

"First things first," Wes said, his voice all business and his face serious. "Are we bonded?"

I sucked in a breath, surprised he'd made that leap. But he had to know that we weren't. If we'd made a bond, even an unintentional one, he would feel the pull as much as I did. "Of course not."

He just nodded his head, like that was the answer he expected. "But you feel better when you're touching me. When you can pull on my magic to augment your own?"

I released a sigh, and couldn't quite stop myself from snuggling just a tiny bit closer. I shrugged one shoulder. "Yes. Like I said, your magic fits with mine. So it's easy and natural to use you as a source. I'm sorry about that."

He glared at me like I had said something stupid. "Don't be ridiculous. There's nothing to apologize for. It's not like you did it on purpose. Right?"

That last bit was said with just a tiny bit of accusation. I tried not to be offended. "No, I didn't do it on purpose."

Wes just squinted at me. "So then, we have to figure out what's going on with you, what's pulling on your power. Until then, you just need to stick close to me so I can keep you stable."

I gave an indignant huff. "That's hardly practical. We've both got jobs to do. You seriously can't expect us to stay in each other's pockets because I have a little sense of fatigue. You're getting a little extreme there, buddy." I tried to pull away from him but he held me fast, and gave me a look that I couldn't quite interpret.

"You've got someone else that can keep your magic and your energy up?"

"Well, no," I answered honestly. I'd never met anyone whose magic fit so well with mine. "But that doesn't mean you can just drop everything and keep me stable. That thought is just-" I cast about for a suitable word and finally settled on, "preposterous."

Wes just gave a snort, sounding amused. "I can do whatever I want. And I don't want you lying in bed barely able to function. That serves no one. So you'll just have to be 'in my pocket' until we can figure it out and fix you. There has to be some magical means at work here. And I am an Investigations Agent. I'll investigate."

His tone was playful, cajoling, and I wanted to smile, but this was too serious. We barely knew each other and, my crush notwithstanding, he couldn't just drop everything to take care of me. He wasn't making any sense.

*****

The last time I visited the lavender farm, it was not in bloom. I always miss it. The serenity of the mountains, the gorgeous farm setting and the peace and quiet of the location make it the perfect place to escape and let your imagination run wild. Along the road to the lavender farm there are other farms selling local honey, produce, horse ranches, one in particular with mini horses is definitely enchanting, local wineries and again plenty of silence and spectacular views.

How could I not be inspired? Many of my stories include California. I’ve lived here close to twenty years and can’t imagine living anywhere else. The scenery is spectacular and while I admit, my relationship with the state is usually love-hate, I always appreciate the local beauty.

‘Lavender’ is inspired by my love for the California Mountains, the crazy-dangerous roads zigzagging through them and the myriad local farms dotting the landscape. You can buy everything from local wine and honey to lavender, nuts and beef jerky. Anything and everything is available; fresh and delicious, and always intriguing. There is plenty to be inspired by. I included a winery in my story “From Here to There,” as part of the Best of Gay Erotica collection and a local produce stand in “A Valentine for Evrain”. The weather, the people and the landscape are varied, eclectic and wide open to interpretation. Again, how can you not be inspired?

The way to ‘Lavender’ was my love for veering of the main road. Wanderlust is readily and easily indulged in California, because everything is an adventure and nothing is simple…nothing.

Getting a coffee is usually an ordeal and there are many, many choices funneled through any number of cultural possibilities. This morning I could have hit up Starbucks down the street or gone to have coffee in a Middle eastern café, Thai Coffee, Vietnamese Coffee or my favorite Café D Ollo (Mexican coffee with cinnamon and sometime orange peel) I smile writing this because that is something else I truly love about living here. I need variety, I need the ability to wander and get lost and possibly find some hidden treasure along the way, and fortunately I live in that environment. This of course can be vexing when I wake up an East Coaster (which I am) and just need a damn coffee and not a full-blown experience.

‘Lavender’ is also reflective of what is happening now in the ‘foodie’ scene in L.A. I work in hospitality and can’t tell you how the words “craft,” “local,” and “sustainable,” float around like pollen. Everyone is a celebrity chef, everyone is a food blogger and everyone is a critic. This culture of food and art is exhausting and to me ultimately hilarious. No matter what you do in hospitality, it’s a form of drudgery.  So I take it all with a grain of salt and love to poke fun at the pretentiousness of my professional world. I do so lovingly in ‘Lavender’ in the form of Denny a pseudo hipster chef who falls for Law. He is of course, knocked down a couple pegs by Law, because he sees through Denny’s pretenses and bullshit.  It’s all in fun and a testament to my love for a state with an ever changing face and my love for pleasure and good dose of harsh fucking and a sprinkle of humor and a handful of heartache.

I hope you enjoy it. Wander off the main road, get lost and get inspired!

Blurb

When Kylor Knightley, a multi-millionaire nightclub owner, is out talent-spotting at an open mic event in London’s Limehouse district, the last thing the stiff-lipped Brit expects is to fall head-over-heels for a devastatingly handsome singer ten years his junior.

Born in New York, twenty-two-year-old Eden McFadden now calls London home and has ambitions of making it big in the capital’s music scene. In the meantime, the feisty free spirit is secretly rocking it as a stripper at a gay club in Soho. But when fate brings him and Kylor together in Limehouse, it starts a chain of events that tears both of their worlds apart.

It’s going to take some serious attitude adjustment for the smart-mouthed stripper and the arrogant British gent to find common ground, but the attraction is too strong to ignore. Sometimes you have to trust in fate and see where it takes you.

Excerpt

Eden was so pumped about meeting the guy with the sparkling turquoise eyes that he couldn’t wait to tell someone. He wasn’t usually one to gossip, but he’d pulled up a chair alongside Blade, who was busy removing his guyliner. Eden was talking to Blade’s reflection in the mirror, relating the moment he’d looked down and seen the gorgeous guy staring back up at him.

Just then someone shouted, “Which of you is green?” and there was the stranger; standing in the doorway next to a security guard.

Eden sat gawking at his visitor and all the strength drained out of his body as if someone had pulled his plug. Blade nudged him. “Don’t just sit there. That’s your guy, isn’t it? God, he really is gorge!”

Eden slowly got to his feet, praying his knees wouldn’t give way, and shoved a shaky hand in the air. “That package is for me.”

The weak attempt at humour was his way of handling the embarrassment he felt because he knew that if the token had been black or pink the security guard wouldn’t have needed to ask whose it was. Everyone knew Stemmy’s tokens were black and Oberon’s were pink. But this was only the second time Eden had handed out a token. The last time he’d invited a guy backstage, his guest had been under the mistaken impression the token entitled him to instant sexual gratification, but Eden hadn’t been that into the guy.

The guard nodded at Eden’s visitor and left.

Still in just his pink briefs, Eden scurried back to his own station and rummaged around in his duffel bag for a clean top. The first thing to come to hand was his old Keep Calm and Carry On Funking T-shirt. He quickly pulled it on and rolled it down his sweat-dampened chest and abs. Then he stood by his dressing table, ready to greet his guest, with one hand resting on the table for support. Eden knew he shouldn’t be getting this worked up over someone he’d only just clapped eyes on. He had no idea what the guy was like. I haven’t even spoken to him yet. Maybe he’s just a good-looking asshole in a suit.

As the guy approached, Eden’s eyes widened in awe. It felt like he was watching the scene through a slow motion filter. He was entranced by the rhythmic sway of the guy’s narrow hips and everything else in the room faded to a blur. The guy’s suit jacket was unbuttoned and his left hand rested inside the trouser pocket, while his right arm hung loose by his side. It was like a breath of self-assured elegance had wafted into the room.

And then there was his hair. It was glorious. A flame-coloured shock of tumbling waves, its hue changed as the light danced over it, like an abstract of wildfire and scorched earth. It jarred with the image of the sophisticated city gent in the cool blue suit. It was hypnotising, the way the picture was so wrong and yet so right.

Eden could tell straight away this guy was no bit player on life’s stage. He had a starring role. You could tell from his arrogant swagger that the only rules he ever played by were his own. He was like a dream come true to Eden. A guy with “Fuck Me” written all over him and a seriously hot “Fuck You” attitude to compliment the looks.

Eden swallowed hard. Where have you been all my life?

Excerpt:

Instead, a complete stranger stood in the doorway. He was about my age, mid-twenties, and stood about five-foot-four with a too-thin frame that made me want to feed him a few Giordano’s pizzas. The guy had dark, buzzed hair and a matching goatee. His skin, even in this dim light, looked ashen, marred by sores in various stages of healing. He stood just over the threshold and the weird thing was, it was like he didn’t even see me. Dark eyes darted about our new home, as if he were looking for something.

“Hello?” I said, standing still. I think I was too weirded out to be scared at this point. I just assumed maybe he had the wrong apartment. He certainly looked harmless enough. In fact, if I put enough breath behind it, I thought I could probably blow him off his feet.

But he didn’t answer. He continued to look right through me, as though I wasn’t standing there, all six-feet-two inches of me. Other than stacks of boxes, rolled-up rugs tied with twine, and furniture shoved at odd angles, I was pretty hard to miss, even in the orange-tinted light seeping in from our huge window.

And then he came into the room. Walked right into my and Ernie’s new home.

“What are you doing?” I snapped. “Can I help you?” I moved a bit closer, thinking to block further entry. Should I call out for help?

It was as though he didn’t hear me. He continued his progress into the apartment unabated. I was too stunned to do anything but stand and watch, gnawing on a hangnail. He moved into the center of the room and did something really strange—he squatted and felt around on the bare floor, as though he was groping for something. He paused and then the rest of his actions were all pantomimed. To the best of my ability, I could discern what looked like someone taking a pipe in his hands, bringing it to his lips, firing up a bowl with—again—a non-existent lighter, and then blowing out an invisible cloud of smoke. He closed his eyes and whatever his imagination told him he was smoking must have been deeply satisfying. His eyes popped open once more, and he appeared all at once more alert.

It was then he seemed to notice me standing there. I’m sure I was slack jawed and, to be honest, starting to get a little bit scared. I wondered where I had left my cell phone. Would anyone hear me if I screamed? Over the roar of an el train?

He smiled, and there was something winsome and sad in it, something plaintive in those brown eyes. But his teeth were repellent—how did someone so young end up with such badly decayed teeth? He held the imaginary pipe out to me. When I didn’t move, he shook the hand holding the “pipe” impatiently, as though beckoning me to take it.

“What the fuck?” I whispered. I moved toward him.

That’s when I heard the creak of the floor, and I turned just in time to see a shadow cross the wall. It was fast—almost a blur. But the dark shape had a human form. For some reason, the shadow brought with it an icy chill.

I wanted to scream but could not find my voice.

When I turned back, the intruder was gone, as though the shadow I had seen a moment ago had swallowed him up.

“Honey? Rick?”

I swam up from dream to wakefulness all at once, feeling disoriented. I was panting.
