Welcome Katya Armock

Since we are now in the holiday season, I wanted to focus this post on one of my favorite holiday drinks: eggnog. Many different cultures have a traditional recipe and name for eggnog. Most include a particular type of liquor.

There are various stories of the history of eggnog, but it is believed to have originated in Europe around the 14th century. It was always seen as a social drink, and an unknown Englishman is credited with this quote about it: “Christmas is not properly observed unless you brew egg nog for all comers; everybody calls on everybody else; and each call is celebrated by a solemn egg-nogging...It is made cold and is drunk cold and is to be commended.”

With the popularity of rum in the Americas, the tradition became to add rum vs. other liquors, ales or wine. The English word for the drink is eggnog. In Spanish-speaking countries, it is often called rumpope. In Belize, the only country in the area whose official language is English, it is called rum popo. One thing notable about rum popo is that it is traditionally made with a lot of rum.

It is said that every household in Belize has their own rum popo recipe. This is one that looks perfect for a party. Visit the original site for pictures to help you make it.

Rum Popo

·         18 eggs
·         6 cans condensed milk
·         6 cans evaporated milk
·         2 whole nutmeg seeds, grated
·         Strong Caribbean rum

Beat eggs until foamy. In large bowl, mix together condensed and evaporated milk. Add beaten eggs slowly, stirring carefully as you pour. Add rum while slowly stirring mixture. Add ground nutmeg and mix well. Strain through a fine-meshed strainer or cheesecloth to remove inconsistencies.

In my novel To Growl or to Groan, the story encompasses the holidays. My hero Jorge’s family is from Belize originally, and rum popo is served. The heroine, Chloe, is a bit surprised when she takes a chug thinking it mere eggnog. Alice is Jorge’s mom.

Excerpt:

“Break it up, you two lovebirds. I have rum popo.” Alice walks into the room carrying a tray of glasses filled with what looks like eggnog.
I jump back from our kiss, but Jorge keeps an arm around my waist. Alice hands us each a glass. I take a swig, and my eyes start to water.
Jorge laughs. “It’s heavy on the rum, not so much on the rest of the ingredients.”
“I just wasn’t expecting it to be so strong.” I take another much smaller sip, then turn to Alice, who is also laughing. “It’s actually quite good.”
Alice raises her glass to us. “Wouldn’t be a Christmas drink without a kick in the ass. It’s a tradition in Belize.”
“Do you normally require such strong drinks for Christmas? I usually associate heavy drinking with awkward dinners.”
She pulls me in for a raucous hug, dragging me away from Jorge and almost causing all three of us to spill our drinks. “Well now you’ll learn to associate strong drinks with fun afternoons, dinners, and parties. Speaking of which, we’ll be having an open house for the neighbors tomorrow and I need to finish decorating. Would you like to help, Chloe?”
I look at Jorge, questions in my eyes. The place is already crammed full of decorations.
He shrugs. “In Belize, the tradition at Christmas is to super clean your house and then decorate it to the nines. We had fake pine trees in Belize, although my grandparents always had the real ones in Ohio.”
“Any other traditions I need to know about?”
“Yeah. All the woman have to dress up as elves.”
“What?”
Alice breaks into peals of laughter, and Jorge follows soon after. She hip bumps me, which reminds me I still don’t quite know how to handle Jorge’s family. “Ah, it’s so good to see my serious Jorge teasing you. It brings my heart joy.” She gives us a look very similar to the one she gave us our first day here when she talked of marriage and grandbabies.
The room starts to close in on me a little, and I set my glass on an end table.

Blurb:
Her gift could save a missing girl…or destroy her relationship forever.

After receiving a troubling Tarot reading, Chloe just knows something big and bad is about to happen. Her ability to communicate with animals and shape-shifters is going awry, and her growing psychic abilities are beginning to scare her. Despite her unease, she won’t let anything interrupt her trip to Scotland to spend the holidays with her shape-shifter boyfriend’s family. Jorge is everything she’s always wanted, and the fire between Chloe and the passionate panther-shifter burns hot. But meeting his family has her nerves in knots.

When Jorge’s sister goes missing, Chloe’s psychic abilities might be the only thing that can help them find her. But things don’t go as planned, and with confusing psychic visions clouding her judgment, Chloe makes a mistake and an animal is injured. And Chloe fears she might hurt Jorge as well…

But the Saracen warrior, Niketas, has other plans. He needs the blood of two virgin half-immortals to win eternal life and the powers of the gods. Until the god Heimdallr, Xára’s true sire, makes it clear he has other plans for his beloved daughter…

Excerpt Teaser:

Xára could not lift a finger. She sprawled over Dráddør all limp and boneless. Never could she have imagined such sheer ecstasy. Had the chamber warmed? Or did the heat come from within her?
She had never been so aware of her woman parts. They pulsed and vibrated and fisted around his thick shaft buried deep inside her. She had touched him. There. ’Twas all so surprising, this intimacy ′tween them, his fingers, his mouth. Was all allowed? Cert, it seemed too wicked to be right.
He trailed a finger up her spine. The gentle caress sent tingles to parts not connected. Her nipples hardened, the nub ’tween her legs ached, and she yearned to rub against him.
“Wife now you are in all aspects.” He nuzzled her neck. “Know you how bairns are made?”
A wash of fire blazed through her and she knew a hot pink color dusted every piece of her skin. She peered up at him. Blinked away the embarrassment and wrote, ’Tis what we just did?
Distracted by the golden hair around his male nipples, she studied the tight peaks, the circle of color around his and then looked at hers. Why were hers pink and his brown?
“Aye. A bairn catches when I spill my seed inside you.” He flicked a finger at the tip of her nose. “Why is Evie so concerned about bairns?”
Mouth pursed, she traced. She is lonely. The keep’s children fear her.
“Know all of Lady Jennie’s tryst with Ard Greimme?”
War braids suited him, Xára decided. He had a wealth of long, wavy golden locks and the four thin plaits at his temples seemed to draw his cheekbones taut. She liked the way he focused on her fingers when she wrote the letters on his chest. They suspect somewhat is amiss.
He outlined her lips with his thumb. “Methinks on the morrow, I must needs speak with your mother. She must have been bereft when Arnfinn sent you to the abbey.”
Dare she tell him? Would he reject her when he found out the whole truth? In a short time she had come to love him and he seemed to care for her. Could she be content with his affection and not his heart when she had given hers?
“Nyssa will insist on healing you.”
She circled her hand around her neck and shook her head.
“Aye. I have asked her to try. Thrice now I have heard you make sounds. What harm can it do, Xára?” He pressed kisses to her forehead, her cheeks, and nipped the lobe of her ear.
She waved a finger at him. Do not distract me.
He chortled and the tiny creases at the corners of his eyes deepened. “’Tis my duty to keep a smile on your face, mit sváss. ’Tis amusing and rewarding.”
All the warriors she knew were dour of mien, angry in their words, and rough with their hands. How blessed she was to have this man to husband. She vowed to make him proud of her. All at once she needed him to know of her training.
I am trained to run a castle. She wrote the letters slowly. How she longed to tell him of her other talents, but dared not.
“I am well content with my bride, Xára.”
He fingered the slight scar in the center of her throat. “How did this happen?”
Xára worried her lower lip. This secret she could share without worrying he would cast her aside. Mayhap ’twould even serve to protect Evie if he knew the all of Magnhildur. The other secrets, for now, she would leave to fate. She traced Magnhildur’s name on his chest. He jerked into a sitting position, captured her wrists, and set them to his heart. “Tell me.”

Blog tour stop and Contest for Secret Desire by Susan D. Taylor

Super Book Blast for Secret Desire by Susan D. Taylor

Claire Robertson is a journalist living a vanilla life. Except when she’s alone at night where she wields her writer whip and stilettos inside her erotic fantasies. Tragedy blindly strikes, forcing Claire to return to her hometown and confront her past. And that past includes Dustin Murray, an old flame she ran away from when things became complicated.

Her life comes apart and she sends her editor the “wrong” story by mistake.  One of her hot novels.

Amidst chaos, Claire has a choice: to return to her safe life back in Seattle or risk adventure, ensuring her smoxy fantasies come to life. Dustin has his own plans and isn’t about to let Claire go. Not when he proves he can handle her life and ALL her bedroom fantasies.

When things heat up, Claire must decide which road to take in life and love.

Excerpt of an excerpt from the heroine’s Claire’s writing -

“I’m Thornton Maxwell…your attorney.” He turned away, but not before she caught his look of displeasure. “God. Woman, do you even know what a mess you’ve got on your hands? We need to talk. A real pressure cooker is about blow.”

Cynthia froze. This wasn’t part of her erotic fantasy. What was he talking about? Should she just come out and admit she had no idea of what was going on or get him to divulge what demanded damage control?

She pretended unconcerned boredom in an attempt to buy some time to think. “Someone’s got his panties in a real twist.”

This wasn’t the first time she’d needed legal. But if he was her new go-to man, she was tempted to screw more things up.

This was a conundrum. He was too damn good-looking. This type of man didn’t appreciate a dumbbell. Did he know how hard she worked or that sometimes contracts needed to be bent? “Explored” is what she liked to call it. Wasn’t that why McGavock Publishing hired a boatload of first-year attorneys anyway? Shoot, he was probably upset because his weekend golf game was about to be rained out.

He paced in front of her desk while raking fingers through his thick, dark hair. Cynthia noticed the way he flexed and moved his arms, his muscles pumping and expanding. He stopped, spun around, and marched back to her desk.

“Lewis, when you cross out clauses and write your own notes into a publishing contract, we don’t have a legal leg to stand on in court when an issue is disputed. The things you’ve included to get an author to sign without consulting legal is tying us in knots. The next time you promise a writer the moon, you better consult me first and NASA second. Not whatever pops into that pretty little head of yours. You need my help with this lawsuit, and I expect your cooperation. You might as well know now that’s going to mean during office hours as well as evenings and weekends.”

His finger was pointed directly in front of her face. She imagined sucking the tip until her sex-crazed brain finally grasped his message.

What? She was floored. Her stomach felt punched, the fist of surprise still lodged in her ribcage. Her mind reeled. It wasn’t possible. She was being threatened with a lawsuit for a couple of silly additions to a contract, and now this man expected her to drop everything. Was he joking? Slowly she inhaled.

“I’m innocent.” She stared back at him. “Sure, I’m not beyond bending the rules, but a lawsuit? No, that’s not possible; it’s impossible. You’ve got to help me.”

“We definitely need a sit-down. Not your usual brush-off and expectation for legal to jump through a hoop. This one is serious.” His gaze swept over her face and downward. The space between them crackled with static energy. He was more than steamed. But he was ready to step in and help her. A spasm of pleasure trilled in her veins. He was her knight in shining armor. She wasn’t the enemy. Not his at least. With all that pent-up fury of his, it was a shame to let it go to waste. He was handsome beyond belief…another time, over cocktails or at a party, she’d not think twice about what her body wanted. His dark eyes weren’t all anger…passion brewed there, pulling the cords to her attraction, making her skin tingle. Oh, my. He wanted to school her good. But maybe she could teach him a thing.

“Thor…Thornton, sit down.” She recouped her confidence. He was in her dominion. The door was closed. Her assistant always knocked before entering. The glass panels were mirrored. He was so near…all she had to do was reach out to him.

She met his bad-boy stare with excitement screaming in her ears.

“Please.” She was almost purring, beseeching him over the rim of her eyeglasses.

“Fine, I’m all ears.” He pulled up a chair closer to her desk. “Well?”

She studied him. If the man ever smiled, he’d be drop-dead gorgeous. She let the papers slip out of her fingers, and she pushed her glasses up on top of her head. Cynthia rubbed her ankles together, and his eyes fixed onto legs.

Ding, ding. Johnny, she had a winner.

She lifted her legs and stood, acting as if arranging her papers was vital. She felt, rather than saw, that his gaze was upon her.

“Client-attorney privilege?” She rounded the desk, trailing her fingers along the surface.

“Yes, whatever you share. Go on.”

“Where shall I begin?” She stopped and leaned back on her desk, directly in front of him. Eighteen inches of space separated them.

“Haven’t you ever longed for something to the point of breaking a few rules? Just once?”

Welcome to my Reading Nook, Dianne Hartsock.  Please make yourself at home and let my cabana boys/girls get you a drink.

Thanks to much for having me here, Dawn! Did you say cabana boys? *deep sigh* Love me some cabana boys!

Comfortable? Wonderful. Now let’s get started.

What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants or a combination of both?
I think I do a little of both. I usually have the story plotted out in my head, and the stories usually end where I wanted them to. But a lot of the time, in between the start and finish, the characters take me places I’d never imagined going before.

What did you do before you were a writer? Do you write full time?
I come close to writing almost 40 hours a week, so I say I'm a full time writer. But I also work as a full time floral designer, which makes my days very full. Before this? I've always written stories, but have only been published for the past two years. As far as jobs outside the home, I've been an educational assistant for first and second grade teachers. I've worked retail and factory  work and have also done some waitressing. I guess you can say I'm a jack of all trades but a master of none.

If you were going to cast the characters of your book, what actors would get the part?
I'm going to have to skip this one! I watch a lot of the classic movies and don't think I could name even one modern actor.

I know you're not supposed to show favoritism but who's been your favorite character to write?
I have to say I have a soft spot in my heart for my villains. Beautiful and witty and more than a shade arrogant. I enjoyed getting to know Jaimin. Seduced by power and greed, he still had a soft spot in his heart for Philip that eventually led to his downfall. I think I like writing the villains'' part, because I'm a pretty nice person myself that it's sometimes nice to be wicked, even in pretend.

Do you have a favorite TV show you can't miss?
Not at the moment. My husband and I watch a lot of scifi but haven't seen anything we really like this year. We have several series on DVD and are working our way through FIREFLY at the moment.

If you could date any character from any book, which would it be and why-no it doesn't have to be from your books?
I've fallen head over heels in love with Tristan from C.J. Cherryh's FORTRESS series. An ancient warrior brought back to life, he's destined to end up alone in the Ice Fortress for all eternity. And I just can't allow that to happen! Every hero deserves his HEA!

Please share with us some juicy details about your latest release.
Adrian has been chosen to be the Watcher for the young Agenor heir, Philip. As the years pass and Philip grows into adulthood, Adrian finds himself falling helplessly in love with his ward, watching him grow into a beautiful but solitary young man. But evil is stirring in the world, led by a lover from Adrian's past. Though Adrian must defend his ward, he also doesn't want to fight against Jaimin. He's caught between the two with the future uncertain.

What was your inspiration behind this book?
I've always been fascinated with gargoyles. They're ugly and evil looking, and yet are the guardians of the good. It was a romance waiting to happen! I wanted my guardian to fall in love with his beautiful ward and waited to see what happened. Adrian told his own story.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I have ODD APOCOLYPSE by Dean Koontz that I'm aching to find time to read. Also, I'm waiting for the new releases from my favorite authors, Robin Cook and Michael Palmer.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so what are your favorites Artists and or albums?
I like a wide assortment of music, depending on mood and company. My husband and I will listen to world beat together. But when I’m writing or doing social networking on the computer, I don’t like to be bothered changing music. So I listen to the local Indie station through the college or to Indie Radio on Spotify. I love that there’s hardly any ads to distract me and I hear something new every day.

If you could go any place in the world and to any time period, what place time would you choose to visit?
Hands down, Earth of the future. I know some people think we're doomed to destroy ourselves, but I choose to believe things will only get better. I'd love to see the progress we've made.

What is your favorite super power and why do you want it?
I would love to fly! Not to change time like superman did, but for the sense of freedom that must come to him when he's soaring through the air.

If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?
Handle with care. I know you're supposed to have a thick hide as a writer, but I'm still working on that one. Unkind words still hurt.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
A hot chocolate mocha with caramel and lots of whipped cream and a very naughty m/m erotic book to go with it.

Thanks for taking the time to be here today. I wish you many sales and wonderful reviews.
Thanks again, Dawn. It's been fun!

Philip's Watcher by Dianne Hartsock
Etopia Press
M/M Paranormal

Darkness is spreading in the world with only the powerful Agenor family to oppose it. In the guise of a stone gargoyle atop the castle walls, Adrian has protected Philip, the young heir, since birth, watching him grow from childhood into a strong but lonely man without love.

When the clan chief, Philip’s father, is murdered by those he trusted, Adrian resumes his human form to better protect his beloved Philip. And finds his love returned. As lovers, their passion is all-consuming, but as they fight against treachery from within, will their love be enough to stem the dark tide sweeping the land? And will it be enough to keep Adrian’s heart alive…

Teaser Excerpt:

Adrian waited, his stomach churning with worry while the storm passed overhead and dwindled into the south. When he was certain Philip wouldn’t return, he rose from his crouch and stretched his arms to the sky. His black wings spread out behind him with a soft rustle.

He ran a hand through his thick hair and drew a breath, weary to his bones. Nothing had gone right. Jonathon shouldn’t have died. The fact that Philip and he had warned him of the danger in leaving the stronghold didn’t make the man’s loss any less tragic. True, those who would spread darkness in the world had brought the war to their doorstep by threatening Philip’s life. But Jonathon should have seen through the ruse and remained in the castle where his power was the strongest.

Adrian’s brow furrowed. Should he have gone with Jonathon, spoken with the wise woman? Silva had strengths of her own. As a child, Adrian had been cautioned against her magic, but he had come to respect her abilities. And she had always been kind to him, an orphaned, lonely boy. Would she be able to help him protect his darling Philip from this dangerous, unknown enemy?

Adrian touched the deep scar on his face and remembered the warmth of Philip’s fingertips. He followed the scar down his neck and left pectoral and trembled as he imagined Philip’s hands on him, their bodies entwined, urgent. He smiled sadly. “Fool, such happiness isn’t meant for you.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

After growing up in California and spending the first ten years of marriage in Colorado, I now live in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with my incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours I spend hunched over the keyboard letting my characters play.

I have to say, Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write my slightly twisted tales. There’s something about being cooped up in the house while it pours rain outside, a fire crackles on the hearth inside, and a cup of hot coffee warms my hands which kindles my imagination.

Currently, I work as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for me. When not writing, I can express myself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Welcome Patty Campbell today

Welcome to my Reading Nook,  Patty Campbell. Please make yourself at home and let my cabana boys/girls get you a drink.

How nice. I could use one today. Oh, please, have that dark-eyed hunk by the bar bring it to me.

Comfortable? Wonderful. Now let’s get started.

Can you please share with us a little about yourself?
I’m the oldest of five daughters, and my husband and I have five grown sons between us. I was a widow when I met Larry.  We took a writing classs together in North Hollywood. He’d done some screenwriting, and I was interested in honing my writing skills with the goal of being published. The upshot—he quit writing and I’ve been writing ever since. That was in 2001. I’m a romantic, so I write romance, love, family, loyalty, commitment and living with the life choices one makes.

I’ve also been published in erotica, under a pen name that I’ll take to my grave. The only way my family will ever know is if a royalty check arrives after I’m dead.

Tell us about your latest book, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?
Jelly’s Big Night Out was published in March of this year.  Jelly’s not my first book, but the first one to be published. It’s a straight R rated romance with elements of humor, passion, tragedy, and a happily ever after.

How do you come up with ideas?
Sometimes it’s something I read in the newspaper or magazine, or an overheard conversation in a public place, or speculating about an interesting looking stranger. Much is from my personal experience or people I’ve known. My best ideas come when I’m out walking -- or ironing. Don’t look at me like that! Some people still own ironing boards. I started ironing piece work when I was 13 to earn money for new school clothes. I came to love it. It’s by far my biggest stress reliever and idea hothouse.

What do you enjoy most about writing?
I enjoy the powerful feeling of creation.  I love creating characters, situations, outcomes. I’m master of the universe when I’m writing. I can be anyone and experience everything.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?
I start with a character. In my current WIP (work in progress), Risky Business, my heroine is a quirky and bizarre dog rescuer, and my hero is a lusciously handsome undertaker. Once I have the characters I write a short bio on them, for my purposes only, then ideas start. How will these two people ever get together? What will happen to them to keep them apart once they become attracted? What obstacles, within and without, will they need to overcome? How hot will the passion burn?

What did you learn from writing your first book?
I learned that I needed to know a lot more about the craft of writing. I was lucky to know a published author who was generous with her wisdom and friendship. She said, “If I can do it, you can do it. So do it!”

Is your muse demanding?
This muse of mine is very contrary. He tends to inspire me around the time of day I should be thinking about what’s for dinner, not when I’m sitting in front of my computer. I put my butt in the chair every morning, but for some reason I can’t really get anything meaty down on paper until later in the day, or often late at night.

Are your stories plot or character driven?
They’re all about character. I’m definitely not an advance plotter. My characters take over and do what they want to do. Every now and then I have to put my foot down and show them who the writer is. Time to give the story structure and theme.

How do you balance a life outside of writing with deadlines and writing muses?
After thirty years in the travel business, meeting payroll and all the other burdens of owning and operating my own companies -- 9/11 hit me with the revelation that I had a different life to live and different goals that weren’t going to wait. I sold my travel agency, home, coffee bar, and shook off the craziness of California. We moved to Jackson, Wyoming. The combination of breathtaking mountains, heart-stopping wildlife, clean air, and living in a town with less than ten thousand population injected me with a new breath of optimism. I’m in my second life and loving every minute of it. Six years ago we moved to southwest Florida. Coats not required.

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?
Well, since Jelly’s Big Night Out is the only one published so far, that’s it. But be on the lookout for - Once a Marine - Heaven Won’t Wait - Hullo Love – and Risky Business. Somebody is going to buy those stories and make them available in eBook and print. I just know it.

A biography has been written about you. What do you think the title would be in six words or less?
It’s a Wonderful Life.

If money were not an object, where would you most like to live?
Summers in Jackson, Wyoming, and winters in Kauai.

If you came with a warning label, what would it say?
Warning: The picture and description on the outside of the box are identical in size, shape and quality as the product inside.  Batteries not needed.

Care to tell us what may be coming next from you?
Right now I have Once a Marine circulating the publishing houses while I work on Risky Business.

Anything else you want to add?

I have an author profile on Amazon:  https://amazon.com/author/pattycampbell

Thanks for taking the time to be here today. I wish you many sales and wonderful reviews.

Thank you, Dawn. It was my pleasure.

Simi Valley, California, Tuesday, 7:30 a.m.

“What? I have a conference with your teacher this morning?” Jelly looked at her kid sister. “I swear, Martha Elizabeth, you keep pulling this kind of baloney, one of these days I’m going to kill you.”
Emi stood glaring at her, her usual defiant stance. She tried for a mean look, but her sweet face at fourteen still had some rosy baby fat. The oversize Jonas Brothers tee shirt hung almost to her knees over faded jeans. Jelly struggled to keep a straight face.
“Don’t call me that! My name is Emi. Go ahead and kill me if you want to, it must run in the family. Then you can go up to Folsom and share Daddy’s cell.”
Jelly heaved a sigh. “Let’s leave Daddy out of it for today, all right?” She turned back to the mirror to finish her hair. “You must have known about this teacher conference for days. Why are you telling me now? Are you in some kind of trouble?”
Hands on her hips Emi yelled, “No! I just forgot, okay?” She flashed her big sister a look of disapproval. “You can’t go see Mr. Henry looking like that. You wear way too much makeup and stuff.”
“Look, kiddo,” Jelly turned from the mirror and pointed at her face, “this is the way I look. This is the way I dress. Live with it. At least I don’t go around looking like I live in a homeless shelter.” She dropped her brush on the counter. “You know that today is the biggest sale of the year for Big Night Out. I’ve planned and advertised it for weeks. How am I supposed to take off for an hour or more in the middle of the morning? My new girl started yesterday. I haven’t even had time to train her.” She closed the door on the medicine cabinet with sharp snap. “You make me nuts, Emi.”
     “I know the feeling.”
Jelly mimicked her posture. “You know the feeling? Tell me, baby sister, what is it that I’ve done so wrong in the past twelve years? I quit school to take care of you when Daddy went to jail for killing that bastard who murdered our mother. We were lucky this house was paid off or we’d have been on the street.
“Aunt Martha had to hang around here for months afterward to keep the Child Welfare people from putting both of us in foster care. I got a job to feed us, went to night school and then opened Big Night Out three years ago. I don’t even have a life to call my own!”
