Guest Author Day with Vijaya Schartz

Welcome author Vijaya Schartz to the Reading Nook as we talk about their latest book, Angel Guardian, and a few other fun things.

Interview with Vijaya Schartz

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main character(s) and what can we expect when we pick it up?

ANGEL GUARDIAN, Book 2 of the Blue Phantom series, features a newly trained female angel, crew member of the angel ship, and a hero whose memory was wiped, who finds himself doing hard labor on a frozen mining planet. There is also a strange telepathic feline with an important role.

Like with all my books, you can expect action, adventure, and strong romantic elements. In the Azura universe, featuring a group of angels protecting the balance of good and evil in the galaxy, you can also expect epic space battles between angels and demons.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

The characters and the hook are usually linked. In Angel Guardian, the memory wipe was the first hook. Who is this hero? Why is he doing hard labor? What has he done? What is his destiny? Even he doesn’t know, and the reader discovers it with him.

Which of your characters would you want to share a campfire with, and why?

If I shared a campfire, it would be with the handsome Dragomir, hero of BLACK DRAGON, Book 1 of the Byzantium series. One of my first loves, a man of many talents, a rebel, a smuggler, a gambler, a spy, a telepath with fascinating peridot green eyes. Need I say more?

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy to read in your spare time?

I read in a wide spectrum but I prefer historical fiction and sci-fi romance. My current author of choice is Rosemary Morris, historical author. Her novels are so well researched, I learn something new each time I pick up one of her books. As for sci-fi romance, Linnea Sinclair, who pioneered the genre, is still my favorite.

Are there any specific themes or messages that you strive to convey through your writing? What impact do you hope your books have on readers?

I may be old-fashioned in my taste for heroes. I like the good guys. Captain America comes to mind. Good and evil are always in the mix. Angels and demons, sacrificing for the greater good, saving the galaxy, and even the universe. Whatever our problems are, the heroes and heroines in my books are facing far worse. And if they can overcome their hurdles, we can certainly deal with the difficulties of our daily lives.

What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as an author, and how have you overcome them?

Challenges? I’ve met them all. The blank page, public speaking, the negativity, the challenges of author promotion. Especially in this age of Social-Media, you have to follow your heart, do what you must, consider the negative critiques and improve as you go, ignore the jealous barbs, and listen to the professional people who support and appreciate your work: editors, publishers, fellow writers in the same stable.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

There are many “techniques” to develop characters, but they only go so far, and half-way through writing the book, I completely forgot my character interview sheet, because my characters grow organically as I write. Of course, I often have to go back to the beginning to implement the character traits that came to me later in the book. Interestingly, they are the details readers love and remember.

But I do have a trick, gleaned from a conference long ago, for when I get stuck. It works for me, and I’m willing to share. Here goes: WHEN YOU ARE STUCK, IMAGINE THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING THAT COULD POSSIBLY HAPPEN AT THIS POINT IN THE STORY… MAKE IT HAPPEN… THEN WATCH YOUR CHARACTERS GET OUT OF THAT STICKY WICKET.

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

I mix genres. I write science fiction adventure with romance. In other words, science fiction women can enjoy. It’s not technical, it’s not just romance in a sci-fi setting, it’s what I enjoy reading. “Never a dull moment” a reviewer once said, then compared my books to Indiana Jones, and I agree. Also, very important, even though I put them through the wringer, the good guys always win in the end and get their just reward.

Can you talk about the marketing and promotion strategies you employ to reach and connect with your target audience? How do you utilize social media and other channels to build your author brand?

I have a publisher, who does some marketing for me. I’m not good at soliciting reviews. I have a website, a professional facebook page, a twitter and an Instagram account. I belong to many groups and post on them at least once a week. I post on my blog, on my publisher’s blog, and on other blogs, like that of the Arizona Authors Association. I do interviews on blogs like this one. Still, this is a tough market, especially since I do not conform to a specific genre.

How do you handle feedback and criticism from readers and reviewers?

Don’t let the turkeys get you down. It’s a saying that applies. In all cases, consider the source. Maybe you presented your book as a mystery but it’s more of a romance, and the mystery reviewer didn’t like it. Live and learn. Sometimes Science Fiction reviewers don’t like the romance element in my books. Sometimes, the romance reviewers think my books are not hot enough. Nothing you can do about it. People have very specific tastes. Just try to find the right audience.

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you're currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

I’m currently writing Book 3 in the Blue Phantom series. Angel Revenge, to be published in October 2024. The heroine is a Valkyrie, and I’m having lots of fun pitting her against a stiff but very handsome general. It will be the last angel book.

I’m already thinking about the next series that will introduce peaceful martial arts in a science fiction setting. No title or series name yet. Book 1 will be published in November 2025 and will feature a Tai-Chi practitioner. To be clear, I’m a Martial artist, black belt in Aikido, practiced Judo and Karate since childhood, and I practiced Tai-Chi for many years. I am presently a Tai-Chi instructor.

Thank you for this opportunity to share.

Wishing everyone a great reminder of the year.

One thousand years in the future, humans have developed the ability to alter their genes to create a perfect version of themselves, but not all are so fortunate. Cerys Skye is a Wild Type, genetically unaltered and forced to live in the Refuge—a place for Wild Types and the unlucky citizens whose genetic modifications society has deemed as imperfect.

All the fiery tempered young woman knows is how to fight. Using her wits and skills, Cerys must compete in brutal prize fights if she is to bring food to the table for her younger sister. But, she is always aware that the next fight could her last—she must find a way out of this life.

Leaving behind all that she knows, the last place the tempestuous Cerys expects to find herself is joining the United Planet's Space Force Academy, where she battles prejudice and intolerance in a world run by genetically modified humans.

As the new recruit discovers, not all is as it seems at the Academy with a shadowy cyber-evil seeking to threaten humanity. But, when loyalties are tested and the stakes are high, can Cerys rely on newfound allies and her unshakeable courage to stop the impending catastrophe?

Contains mature themes.

Read an Excerpt

Cerys shifted her jetpac speed to cruise and the hum of thrusters died away, leaving only whistling wind. Her titanium fight boots, and one hundred meters of searing air hung between her and death.

She floated above the Goliath. Her mouth was as dry as sun-scorched wind. Below, tiny people seethed around the edges of the stadium’s arena like leeches, blood-hungry and thirsting for the show to start. As she drifted lower, the Valkyries, all golden tresses and gleaming breastplates, twirled and swooped, a heavenly distraction. She flicked a salute. Gerry and Hilde swept their swords in flashing arcs. Their jetpacs accelerated beneath the holograms of arched wings as they glided into position.

“On me,” Cerys shouted, hitting the drop signal. She dived for the arena. Wind ripped past her, and adrenaline surged in her blood. She shot through images of exploding stars and the crowd turned to the sky like a bristling savage beast. Its roar pounded her like a fist.

Valkyrie. Valkyrie. Valkyrie.

Discover The Game Warden's Mate and #Giveaway

Discover The Game Warden's Mate by A.M. Griffin today and make sure to enter the tour wide giveaway as they are giving one lucky person a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. The tour is sponsored by Goddess Fish Promotions and you can find all the tour stops HERE.

Talking with author A.M. Griffin

Q: How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

A: I had to do a lot of world building to come up with the idea of an illegal gaming planet. I had to figure out exactly how it would be set up, the tech involved, how to protect the planet from prying eyes as well as how to keep the hunters and prey confined to their specific areas of the arena. Coming up with the idea of the gaming planet was fun because I was able to let me imagination run wild (which is why I love writing sci-fi).

Q: What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book, The Game Warden’s Mate?

A: Think, Survivor, but on an alien planet and cranked up to 100!

Q: Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A: I like to write first, just to get the story out of my head. Then, I go back and clean it up. I’m not going to lie, my first draft is pretty wild. I might have changed the name of the hero or heroine in the middle of the book and hadn’t gone back to make the updates. I might have inconsistencies in motivation, and overall, the story just doesn’t flow. The point again, is to write the story. My second draft is what I call, “making the story less stupid”. The subsequent drafts are for laying with action and emotions and catching any plot holes and the last draft is done on a Kindle so that I can read it for flow. Then, after all of that, it’s sent to my editor and beta reader. It’s a pretty lengthy process and I’ve tried to shorten it before, but I found that I actually like all those rounds of edits. It helps me to craft a solid story and I don’t feel rushed to put anything out that I’m not 100% satisfied with.

Q: Describe your writing space/office!

A: My bed, in the evening. That’s where I do my best writing. I’ve tried writing during the day and sitting at a desk, but I just end up struggling for hours, not able to find my pacing. But come eight or later in the evening? I’m full of zest and ideas.

Q: What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A: I don’t really have one. I’m a few bites here and there kind of girl.

Q: What’s your favorite genre to read?

A: Regency! I could never write one because the research alone would bore more to smithereens, but I sure love to read about a mis-behaved or mis-understood Duke who’s found himself smitten by a woman not up to his station. lol

Q: What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

A: Hmmm. I just finished “The Blue Eyed Samurai” on Netflix which I binged in one day. I also love, “What We Do in the Shadows”. But other than that, I’m kinda all over the place.

Q: What do you do when you have free time?

A: I’m currently living what I call my fifth life now. It’s the first time in my life where I’m only responsible for me and can finally figure out what makes me happy. And what makes me happy is traveling to warm and beautiful places, hanging out with friends, socializing and napping. lol

Q: What are three words that describe your Main Characters?

A: Strong, determined, and committed.

Q: What can readers expect from you next?

A: I’m currently working on the next Hunt story. This one will be about Yesenia. I’ve also just released a trilogy in the Intergalactic Dating Agency series. It’s about 3 aliens who crash land on Earth and they’re trying to fit into small town America until their rescue comes. Besides, that, I’m always popping ideas around my head so hopefully I’ll be able to get something new and exciting out by the Spring!

The Game Warden's Mate

by A.M. Griffin

GENRE: Sci-fi Romance

BLURB: The Hunter. As the new Game Warden, Xrez Ym’ihla brings patrons from across the galaxy to track prey in a game built to enslave the weak and mate the strong. The business is a long running family legacy and Xrez is determined to succeed as his father had before him. He hadn’t meant to let one human occupy his thoughts, mind, and body.

His lies may come back to haunt him, but if he reveals the truth, he’ll ruin his chance to capture the heart of the one he wants.

The Prey. Esme Valdez had her entire life planned from an early age. As a chemist, her life was average and mundane, just the way she liked it. Until the impossible happened. Never did she imagine being abducted by aliens and forced to participate in a survival of the fittest game called The Hunt. If she survives and makes it to the end, she’ll be freed. If not, she’ll be forced to mate the one who captures her.

Esme is determined to win at all costs, even if it means putting her trust in a sexy alien who taunts her in the most delectable way.

Their love was built on betrayal. Can she trust him with her heart and life?

Excerpt Three:

“You’re in The Hunt. There are three ways to leave the arena. You can get yourself killed, captured by a hunter or win.” He briefly glanced their way. “From what I’ve observed so far you’ll be captured and processed before the day is over.”

“Hunt?” the male asked. His eyes were opened wide. Panic and fear splashed across his face.

The female gasped and clutched the male tighter, pressing her body against his back.. “Arena?”

Xrez stared at them, pitying them for the circumstances that they’d found themselves in. It wasn’t their fault that they were useless. They were a product of their species. And it wasn’t their fault they were on Turolois. His father was to blame for that.

“My advice? Summon an escape pod. Two hunters followed me and should be closing in on our position. If you leave now, you’ll have a chance to put distance between you and them. They are pack hunters and skilled at what they do. Leaving here on foot is no longer an option as they’ll pick up your scent and corral you into a trap.”

The male scrunched his face, and his lips thinned. “You sound bonkers, man. If you aren’t going to help, get out of here.” Spittle dropped from his lips. “What’s with the bad costume anyway? Are you some messed up cosplayer?”

Xrez didn’t have the energy to indulge these two any longer. No matter what he said, it wouldn’t register in their tiny brains. He’d given them sound advice, and they hadn’t made a move to save themselves.

He took one last glance at the pair of weaklings. If a hunter didn’t capture them soon, their stupidity would get them killed. Yes, it was best that they were taken right away so he could focus on helping the other humans to Level Two.

“I’m so scared of that thing, Spencer,” the woman cried. “It’s so ugly. It looks like a monster.”

“Don’t worry, Mary Ann. This is just a crazy scheme to frighten us. I hate weirdos like him,” the male said in hushed tones. “Ignore him. Maybe if we do, he’ll go away and leave us alone.”

Monster? Ugly?

Is that how humans viewed him? The females of his species found him attractive, virile and strong.

Xrez shrugged. The female didn’t know what a good mate was considering what she’d been used to on Earth. Xrez left the opposite way he’d come, following the scent of one female in particular. He hadn’t gotten two clicks away before he’d heard the screams. It seemed the Cyrox’s efforts had paid off. They’d just acquired a male and female without having to do very much work at all.

Excerpt:

Porter skidded across the deck of the boat. He grabbed a handrail when the vessel shuddered and lurched upward out of the water. The helicopter, their extraction plan, was hovering almost over the craft. Porter could hear their blessed haven, but its stealth capabilities kept it out of sight.

Sophia!” Porter rarely shouted, but today he made an exception.

As the boat was shoved through the quiet waters of Lake Erie, Sophia, his beloved wife, pulled herself up from below deck.

“He’s dead,” Sophia panted.

“We have got to go!” Porter pointed up.

Sophia nodded and they fought their way toward each other. Porter grabbed Sophia’s arm. At the same time the helicopter became visible just above their heads.

Grab on!” Kai hung out of the helicopter and tossed a thick rope at Porter’s head.

Sophia vaulted at the rope, catching it, and hanging on. A split second later, Porter did the same. Mere seconds passed before they were being hauled into the helicopter. They watched in horror as the boat was pushed completely out of the water and flipped over. It didn’t take long until it vanished beneath the surface.

“What is that?” Kai ground the words out.

Sophia shook her head. “Nothing good, that’s for sure.”

They took their seats, fastening their safety harnesses and Porter called to the pilot, “Go!”

The turbo-powered helicopter ascended, leveled off and flew them toward home.

“We need a new plan,” Kai grumbled.

“Plan B should’ve been Plan A all along. People have died because we made the wrong choice,” Sophia added.

Porter closed his eyes for a few seconds then opened them to look around at the others. “It’s been long enough. They should’ve been brought in months ago.”

Arresting the Warlord
Science Fiction/Futuristic Romance

BLURB:

CeeCee Tsosie is a Navajo Nation police officer and shaman with the ability to control the weather. She’ll admit arresting Jake Jones, a Coletti Warlord, for speeding was not one of her better decisions. But hey, the law was the law and the drop-dead gorgeous warlord pushed every one of her buttons. She might have been a tad over-zealous with her rainstorm and stun gun, but the Jackass had it coming.

An alien serial killer is stalking the Navajo Nation. The Coletti Empire is hunting a galactic fugitive. Turns out they need each other’s help to stop the shapeshifting predator. Can she work with the Jackass? Can Jake convince CeeCee she’s the one? Only time, and the spirits will tell.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I grabbed Jake’s hand and pulled him toward a miniature hogan. “I’ll explain it later. We have prey to track.”

Jake dug his heels in. “That’s the sweat lodge?”

“It is.”

“It’s too small, I won’t fit,” Jake protested.

“You fit in the back of my patrol car, didn’t you?”

Jake gave me the stink eye. “With my knees up under my chin.”

“If you sit crossed-legged and hunch, you’ll fit,” I said and crawled inside the sweat lodge.

“Fuck. I’m stuck,” Jake groused as he tried to follow me.

“Lose the armor or teleport inside.”

Jake’s armor folded away, exposing his well-muscled body. “This better be worth it.”

“I don’t want to look at his junk,” Uncle Jesse griped.

Giving him the one finger salute, Jake squeezed through the opening and hit his head on the ceiling. “Fuck!”

“Hunch,” I instructed.

“I’m hunching. I’m hunching.”

Uncle Jesse wriggled in, took his place near the firepit, and poured peyote laced water on the rocks. Steam filled the sweat lodge. “Ancient Mother awaits us.”

I let the flap close and darkness engulfed us.

“It’s like being buried alive,” Jake grumbled.

I rolled my eyes. What had happened to the fearless warlord?  “This is supposed to simulate a mother’s womb and your rebirth.”

“If you say so.”

Jesse beat on a drum and chanted, “Ancient Mother, we hear your call. Ancient Mother, we hear your song. Ancient Mother, we hear your laughter. Ancient Mother, we taste your tears.”

“Mitayuve, oyas, lecham, welo omakiya yo,” I intoned repeatedly.

“Shit. Shit. Shit.”

I exhaled a long breath. “What’s wrong now?”

“I’ve got a Charley horse,” Jake answered.

“Uncle Jesse can you fix it, please.”

“If I must.” Uncle Jesse threw more water on the stones. “Hozhq sitsiji shivaagi.”

“Sonovabitch! It stopped,” Jake exclaimed.

“Good. Now open your mind to the Ancient Mother.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Mitayuve, oyas, lecham, welo omakiya yo,” I recited and concentrated on finding Jia Stanka. A blue Italian road sign appeared in my mind. It read San Gagliano 8 and had a white arrow pointing west. Good. Jia was still in Italy. I frowned as my vision shifted to a fancy restaurant. Our drop-dead gorgeous assassin was wearing a slinky black dress and could put that super model Cindy whatever to shame. Oh, my God. Fate was a twisted bitch. Her date was none other than my cousin Giovanni Dragos. He had the evil scientist vibe going with the wild, white hair, thick bushy eyebrows and a spiffy white suit that could double as a lab coat. A shudder shook me. He was studying Jia as if she were an interesting but odd specimen he wanted to dissect in his lab.

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.
