Series: Ashford Creek Book 1
Contemporary Romance
Series Information and Buy Links HERE
Release Date: January 5th, 2026

With one scowl, I fell just that much harder for Callum Ashford—NFL star turned small town brewer. He’s not only older, but he’s my brother’s best friend. Two very important reasons I should stay away.

Only two years ago, after the worst night of my life, he kissed me and I can’t keep him off my mind.

When the only house available to rent in town happens to be the one across the street from him, the close proximity does its work.

We can’t keep our hands off each other. Yet as the heat rises, so do feelings. He might want me, but he wants peace more.

There’s a darkness within him I know he fights. Just as there are secrets his family needs to uncover. But when the danger comes full force, it won’t be from the obvious corner. No, we both have our pasts we chose to hide.

And our fears.

Yet when I break, he catches me.

And I hope I have the strength to do the same.

**Legacy is an age gap, best friend’s little sister, small town romance and the first in the Ashford Creek series featuring Callum and Felicity. Each one can be read as a complete standalone. A HEA is guaranteed!**

Teaser Excerpt:

Ashford Creek. Home of small town lore, single dads, a bakery that judged you, a brewery owned by a former NFL linebacker, a couple of restaurants without a rivalry, family drama, secrets, and most likely a murderer.

And why the hell did I continue to live in a town that my family had not only founded long ago but tried to destroy multiple times? I’d run from what crawled beneath and moved out of town. Gone to college, played a sport to the best of my abilities, had a career in which thousands upon thousands of people knew my name.

Found a life.

Lost that life.

Then, I moved back to this hellhole known as Ashford Creek.

Yay.

“What’s crawled up your butt?”

I narrowed my gaze at my best friend Rune before going back to pull the tap. A customer needed a beer, a shit beer since it wasn’t one of mine, but the customer was always right. At least, that’s what they told me.

“Nothing,” I finally answered, since Rune wasn’t about to let me off with just a glare. The man was damn persuasive and annoyed the hell out of you until he got the answers he wanted.

That was probably why we were still best friends after all these years, despite the fact I’d lived far from the area for over a decade, and why he was such a damn good bartender. It didn’t matter that he owned the bar and grill. He was at his best when he was behind the bar, watching over the town residents and making sure we stopped fucking things up. We weren’t always great at it, but Rune did his best.

I much preferred my brewery. Yes, we served beer behind the bar and some small eats, but we weren’t open as late as the Summit Grill, nor were we open every day for the public. The scent of scarcity made reservations a top hit, and we sold more beer because of it. People would line up for hours for just a taste of the latest small batch in whatever four packs we sold that month.

I didn’t need to be behind the bar in order to get my job done. The fact that I was behind the bar today just to help Rune notwithstanding.

Rune finally shoved my shoulder, lifting his brow as the light above us glinted off his septum ring. “I totally believe that ‘nothing’ you just said. Seriously, what’s going on with you?”

I shrugged. “Not a damn thing. I’m just being myself. I’m sorry that I’m too much of an asshole for you right now.”

Rune rolled his eyes. “Well, now that you mention it, you’re always an asshole, so you looking like you want to stab my customers is pretty much on brand for you. However, if you could stop looking like you want to stab my customers, that would be wonderful.”

“He looks like that when he walks into Ashy Buns, so I assume it’s just his face.”

I turned and looked at the familiar voice and did my best not to roll my eyes. Fiona, said owner of Ashy Buns, loved to get under my skin. First off, who the hell named a bakery Ashy Buns? It made no sense, and frankly, it felt rude. She hated her job, hated her bakery, and hated the town. Sure, I might complain about the town, and I might hate some people within the town for good reasons, but I didn’t actually hate Ashford Creek. I was just an asshole sometimes.

Fiona, however, was just completely ridiculous. Her icy blonde hair was pulled back into a tight bun on the top of her head, and she had this new cat eye makeup thing going on that I didn’t understand. She glared at me as she pointed to the wine behind me.

“Can I get you something, Fiona?”

“You can get me a few things, Callum,” she purred. “In fact, why don’t you get out from behind that bar, and we finish what we should have after high school?”

I resisted the urge to look over at Rune, who snickered behind me. Asshole. Fiona and I had never dated. Not in high school, and sure as hell not when I’d come back home. She’d always wanted to date the quarterback of the football team, and since Rune had turned her down, she’d tried for the tight end. I’d run faster away from her than I had on the field, and she’d never truly forgiven me. Even when I’d been playing in the NFL, she’d tried to find a way to hit on me and treat me like shit at the same time. I never quite understood her. Nor did I feel the need to any longer.

“Fiona, what do you want to drink?”

The edge in my voice was not lost on her, and her gaze narrowed. “Are you really going to let this man continue to work here?” the woman asked as if she hadn’t just been hitting on me.

“Sure. I’m good like that. What do you want, Fiona?” Rune said, this time his voice was not as sweet.

The bakery owner rolled her eyes. “Chardonnay. The buttery kind, not the kind that tastes like olive juice. You would think you would learn by now.”

I pasted on a grin, poured her a Chardonnay, being sure to fill up the proper amount and not giving a single drop extra like I might have with nearly anyone else in town, and handed it over. “Are you opening a tab?”

“Maybe. It depends on what I have going on later.”

This time, Rune just threw his head back and laughed, and I flipped him off.

“Let me ring you up,” I said dryly in answer.

There was just something diabolical about that woman, and one day, I hoped she would eventually just close up that bakery of hers like she kept promising and go away. Of course, she wasn’t the only person in Ashford Creek I would wish would go away, but I just needed to get over it.

By the time she went back to her table, my head ached, and I knew I was done for the night.

“Stop glaring at me,” Rune said after a moment. “You’re all done for the night. Now we can get on to being customers and let my staff do what they’re supposed to.”

“It’s about damn time,” I snarled, though I smiled as I said it.

I did like helping out Rune. He helped me out at the brewery all the time. He was my best friend, and we’d been friends since we were kids. Between him and his brother Atlas, we’d run Ashford Creek scared when we’d been kids. My brothers Bodhi and Malcolm had joined us, as well as a couple of other town mainstays like Kellan and Thatcher. We’d been a menace on our small town, and I knew our reputation still tended to be a little loud for some of the town’s residents.

Below the vast concrete maze of Los Angeles, beneath miles of freeways sprawling across valleys, canyons, and passes, a middle-aged woman lounged on a sofa swarming with hundreds of thousands of fire ants. She had long, jet-black hair that cascaded down her back, its inky strands contrasting starkly with her pale skin, which seemed almost ghostly under the lights, tinged with an eerie green hue at the hairline. Her dark eyes, heavily outlined with thick, black eyeliner, cut through the room with a sharp, calculating gaze, like she could see right through a person. Her features gave her an air of regal intensity, but the permanent scowl on her lips sent shivers down the spines of those unfortunate enough to lay eyes on her. Everything about her screamed disdain as if the world itself was a personal annoyance to her.

“Darkness,” she exclaimed, “keep stinging me! Feels very refreshing.” She trimmed her nails with the sharp edge of a machete. At the same time, Coven Radio played in the background in the elaborate parlor of the Palatio de Malac, a gothic horror made of black obsidian decorated with the bones and skulls of countless Ordinaries killed by her kith and kin, the creatures of the shadows, vampires, werewolves, and, most importantly, witches, collectively known as monsters. She leaned over to drink bubbly, fermented Ordinary blood, chugging the heady concoction from a golden chalice.

“Tonight is glorious!” she said to the crows circling overhead in the vast expanse of the vaulted ceiling. “Devlina is getting her just desserts. My bae will emerge victorious, and he will elevate me to my rightful place, my despicable ones.” She stood and brushed several fire ants off her legs. “I will rule with an iron fist, bringing order to the stupid covens who have become complacent.”

A crow cawed loudly and descended in a lazy-eight pattern before lighting on her open hand. “Malius, whoever heard of monsters who don’t terrorize ordinary humans, who don’t hunt down families in the park or hide in shadows, ready to prey on young adults on the leafy universities of Southern California?”

“No one, your horribleness!” the crow said sharply. “Monsters have grown soft, lazy, comfortable.”

“Precisely,” the woman said. “And I can’t simply watch my brethren humiliate themselves in deference to the Pàcifimenta and the stupid Magicals Alliance.”

“Fools, all of them!”

The woman stroked the head of the crow with a long fingernail, filed into the shape of a V and painted black. “And you know, Malius,” she said, “it is time for the Máunadus to step up and lead the monsters. Take our place in the darkness and gloom and show those silly creatures what it truly means to be wicked!”

“Shall we go to the dungeons and scare some Ordinaries? Maybe torture them for fun?”

“Oh, that does sound delightful, Malius,” she said, “but we must plan out the coronation for when I transform from Máu Rabetica into Hêracansa, the Queen of the Gloom!”

Malius chirped, his black eyes sparkling. “What a glorious day that will be, my lady!”

“Won’t it?” Máu Rabetica asked, stroking the bird’s head. “What a turn of events for me, once a humble lesser goddess charged with ensuring the darkness in its entirety in the night, such a silly and tedious job. I went to the Paláujo Dorallen, the famed Golden Palace and home of the Casso Soljallen, the seat of Cupidêro Êímpagońena and his clan of the Sun and pleaded with him to allow me to be important like Amnoxha the Goddess of the Night. He refused, the sniveling fool, because she was the wife of Uvendra, the Goddess of the Moon and head of the Casso Uvendrallen, their rival house. He feared a resumption of war between the Three Houses of Morra Êímpagońena, which had lasted a millennium before the intervention of the Áuqala to restore peace.”

“We love fighting, death, and destruction!”

“That we do, my hated one.” Máu Rabetica ruffled Malius’s feathers gently. “Anyway, the Batanalla siec Êtaulls—the Battle of the Cosmos ends. Amnoxha’s reign of the night is agreed upon to placate Uvendra, and I ask the silly Sun God himself for a new name and more responsibility, and he scoffs. Instead, he offers to train me in Xem Sen Ou, telling me, ‘Coaugelus and Astroístus’—those silly semi-immortal descendants of the gods themselves—‘will revere and call upon me in their hour of need.’ Barf, no thanks. Especially because his condition was that I reject all worldly possessions and dedicate myself to humility.”

“You, humble?” the bird jeered.

“Exactly, pet,” Máu Rabetica said. “He told me to sell my beautiful palace of diamonds and opals situated among the mists at the top of Morra Rampsgàra in Passonea. I had seventy bedrooms, countless mirrors to admire myself, and the villagers below lived in absolute fear of me! And he wanted me to trade that in to learn how to smack a few heads around while also serving the other gods and goddesses?”

“Never!”

Máu Rabetica deepened her voice, imitating Cupidêro: “In order to truly become selfless—the core tenet of Xem Sen Ou—you must let go of your ego and transcend your id.”

“How would you do that? Meditate? Scream at people?” the bird asked.

“No, by scrubbing the toilets of the higher gods and goddesses, washing their feet, scrubbing their floors, and feeding them grapes.” Máu Rabetica gagged. “Can you imagine such humiliation?”

“Not for you.”

“I refused, of course, and, instead, offered to arm wrestle Cupidêro. If I won, I’d become Goddess of the Night; if I lost, he’d buy me dinner.”

“Surely you joke?”

“Never, but to your point, Cupidêro was outraged, and he punished me by sending me from Morra Êímpagońena to the Imvessanabo.”

“The Inversion!”

Coming Next Week: The Forever Rule by Carrie Ann Ryan

Coming Jan 6th! This is the first book in the Cage Family series. Meaning it's all about binge reading!

What happens when the man you’d thought could be the one turns out to be your new boss?

Blakely

The moment I met Aston Cage, I knew my life had changed. A single dance later, we’re both all in. Until he ghosted me.

Then my boss fires me for dancing with the enemy.

Three months later, working for the Cages is my last resort. Now I’ll work beside him day by day, trying not to let my feelings take control. It’s heaven and hell. Except I’m starting to think there’s a part of this story I’m missing…

Aston

I made myself walk away from Blakely after my family’s dirty laundry hit the news. My father’s secret family complicates everything. In order to keep our inheritance intact, we’re forced to do monthly dinners with both sides of the family—the brothers I grew up with and the new set of siblings we never knew about.

An additional obstacle: Blakely is my new sister’s best friend.

Meaning the moment I give into temptation, I not only risk the woman I’m falling for, but the family legacy just starting to reveal itself.

But Blakley is worth it. I just have to prove I am as well.

**The Forever Rule is a missed connection, workplace, big city meets small town romance featuring Aston and Blakely. Each book can be read as a complete standalone. An HEA is guaranteed!**

Sneak Peek Excerpt:

“Just like that? I’m hired?”

He shrugged as if he hadn’t just changed my life. “We can go over salary and benefits and hours and everything, but we want you. And I know you need the job. And to be fair, I was a little worried that you weren’t going to want to take it because of well…”

And the other elephant in the room raised its trunk. “You don’t have to worry about that. I haven’t spoken to him since that evening.”

Confusion covered his face. “He didn’t call you?”

I winced. “I don’t know if that’s any of your business in an interview, but no.”

He flinched. “I think we are past the point of not allowing any personal things into this interview. I apologize.”

I shook my head, wondering why I’d snapped back as I had. “No. You’re right. I’m the one that blurted that Isabella was my best friend.”

“And that’s the second thing. Is she going to be okay with you working here?”

This time I smiled. “I think she promised to come and kick shins if I didn’t get hired. So thanks for that.”

He grinned then. “I think I’m going to like this sister of mine.”

“She’s my best friend. And one of the most amazing people I know. So I hope you do. And I’m really sorry all of this happened and it’s such a mess. But we do not need to talk about that. And I’m sorry that I know so much about it.”

“It’s actually kind of nice that someone else knows outside of the family. I mean the media pretends they know, but they don’t.”

I shook my head. “I can’t even imagine.”

He waved it off as if it was nothing, though I knew it couldn’t be. “So, are you okay then working here? We’re complicated, we’re demanding, but we’re not going to fire you because you dared to even breathe next to our supposed rival.”

I press my lips together, wondering what the catch was. Who were these Cages? And why was I inevitably connected to them?

But in the end, it didn’t matter.

“Yes. I’m in.”

He held out his hand again, and I shook it, as a wide smile covered his face. “Good. Now we can let the world know we poached you from our new rivals.”

This time I rolled my eyes. “Oh, he would love that.”

“Oh, we’ll make sure he knows.”

“As long as it doesn’t blow up in our faces.”

“We can handle the embers.” He looked over my shoulder and from the way that he stiffened ever so slightly, I froze.

I knew exactly who was behind me in that moment, and who I knew I would inevitably see here.

However, James was my boss. My new boss. And as I turned to see Aston Cage there, I was afraid of what I was going to see.

And afraid of what I wasn’t.

Talking with Karen Hulene Bartell

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Butter pecan--I love its creamy / crunchy texture and its nutty, rich flavor with just a kiss of vanilla.

Which mythological creature are you most like?

I’m most like Pegasus. I love horses. For years, I rescued and rehomed mustangs. If I could, I’d gallop through the heavens, exploring one universe after another.

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.

Gone With the Wind. I was thirteen, and I wanted to be just like Scarlett O’Hara!

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I’m a pantser, no question about it. I do make short outlines of what happens next, but I’m too spontaneous to follow any extended framework. Besides, when I “play dolls” with friends, that is, brainstorm my plot, I often prefer their ideas to mine, which makes for far more interesting plot twists than I’d devise.

Describe your writing space.

One of the ginger twins is spread out on my Queen Anne desk, shedding cathair over the keyboard as I type. That’s okay. He’s my “mews,” one of four, actually, who inspires my imagination.

A quarter of a century ago, I sanded and stained my wooden Queen Anne desk--although, over the years, the cats have scratched its surface to shreds. On top of the desk is my reading list, a stone coaster from my husband, engraved with “I will always love you,” and a myriad of yellow notes to self.

A water bottle sits at my left, and a coffee cup sits at my right.

Armed with my “mews,” surrounded by reminders of love, and bolstered with caffeine, I’m ready to write!

Excerpt Three:

“Mind if I camp out ’til the roads clear?”

“Under the circumstances?” The clerk shook his head. “Not a problem.”

“Thanks.” He started toward the sitting room and nearly bumped into Maeve, leaning against the wall. “Sorry, didn’t mean to wake you.”

“You didn’t.” She tossed her chin. “I was cat-napping.”

“Right.” He compared her guarded veneer to her sleeping-beauty persona. Which is closer to her true self?

“Couldn’t help overhearing.” Gesturing toward the clerk with her chin, she grimaced. “I’m responsible for you being out tonight--”

“No.” He shook his head. “This is just a freak storm.”

“You don’t have to sleep in a chair.” She took a deep breath and gave a quick, tight-lipped smile. “My room has two queen beds, and you’re welcome to one of ’em.”

Unsure of the extent of her invitation, he did a double take.

“Just so we understand each other, this is a bunk, a place to sack out. Period. Amen.” She spoke in a low-pitched, no-nonsense voice. “Nothing more, so don’t get any--”

“Got it.” He covered his disappointment with a laugh. “Thanks, I appreciate the offer, but I’ll be fine dozing by the fire.”

“Hey, I’ve bivouacked with soldiers in Afghanistan. We do what’s necessary under extenuating circumstances.” Shrugging, she glanced at the door. “And this blizzard qualifies.” Her face relaxed into a smile.

Her offer tempting, he compared sitting up all night to stretching out in a bed. Then he glimpsed the clerk.

“If you’re worried about my reputation, don’t be.” She laughed, the sound like sleigh bells tinkling on a crisp, wintry night.

What is it about her that conjures thoughts of other times--other eras?
