Deadly Sins
by January Bain
GENRE: Contemporary Romance (Mafia)
Book
one in the Irish Mafia Kings series
Blood
for blood. Her family killed my brother, so I’ll take their princess.
I’m
Quinn Lyons, Irish Mafia King, a man known for getting what he wants, and I
want her, Aria Byrne. I’m going to make her pay for her family’s sins.
I
didn’t intend to snatch her from her fancy engagement party, just kill her
rival mobster father, but plans change in the heat of the moment. Now she’s
mine to claim and possess, because what better bargaining chip could a Mafia
boss have than the beloved princess of a rival family?
Until
I decide I don’t ever want to let her go.

Four:
Aria
“Are you okay, Aunt Sofie?” I got up and rushed to greet my
aunt coming in the bedroom door, then hugged her tight. Her frame felt thinner,
frailer since I’d come home. What had she endured these past years? I’d asked
on numerous occasions, but she’d kept a stiff lip, only assuring me she was all
right.
“I’m fine, just checking that you’ll be ready on time? You
know what a stickler your father is for punctuality.”
“Did he hurt you?” I asked, pulling her farther into my
bedroom. She sat on the end of my princess-style bed, her mouth pulled into a
tight smile.
“I can handle your father. You look beautiful, Aria. You’ll
make our family proud. You grew up so much during your years studying in
Ireland.” She reached up and touched my cheeks, her fingers cool and dry.
“You’ve become a young woman. I miss the tomboy, the one always playing in the
dirt and making mud pies with happy faces drawn in with a stick. But the time
comes when women must put all that behind them. Your time came sooner than I
would have liked.”
She said the words apologetically, her soft brown eyes
pleading for understanding.
I glanced at the vanity mirror over the dresser. I didn’t
see beautiful so much as paler than normal. My long locks were restrained in a
sleek French twist, courtesy of my aunt’s instructions. And after the
altercation with my father, how could I refuse her?
The hair stylist had managed a miracle though. My hair had
as much a mind of its own as I did, though my rebellion had to be sent
underground for the foreseeable future. Like rapids during whitewater rafting,
I was only one spill away from disaster. Remember what’s at stake, Aria. Who
could forget the heavy hand my father had on all our necks? I suddenly wanted
to tear all the annoying pins from my head, let it down, not feel the pressure
of what I had to do tonight.
“I’ll meet you downstairs.” Aunt Sofie sighed before kissing
my cheek and leaving my bedroom, her footsteps silent on the thick rug.
I got to my feet and went back to sit in front of the vanity, where I picked up the fat makeup brush and rubbed it over the pot of color, then applied it to the apples of my cheeks. If I had no color, at least I could hide behind a mask. Yes. More mascara and darker lipstick. There. I didn’t look like myself, which was the point and should make this easier, as if this was happening to someone else. Because the real Aria, the one I’d finally discovered at art school in Limerick, would never be celebrating her engagement to a man she didn’t love. That she barely even knew. No way in hell.
