An Interview with author Susan Zoe Bella

 

Q: How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

A: The best kiss I ever had was at High Point Raceway on May 23, 1986. A clear night sky sprayed with stars, a crackling campfire, an iced keg, the hottest coolest guy I ever met with the sweetest classic muscle car…out in the middle of nowhere on the grounds of High Point, buzzing with life and excitement from other campers. I was painfully shy. He was smooth as Tennessee Whiskey. He took my hand as we stood in the warm glow of firelight near his car and kissed me like nobody ever had and nobody ever could then held me in the most sincere, tender embrace. All my anxiety melted away in that moment in his arms. The night was dreamy, magical, and etched in my memory for all time. Deciding where this special love story begins was a no-brainer 😊

 

Q: What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book, High Point?

A: Hi! My name is Susan Zoe Bella. I’ve recently published a fact-based love story that tops any TV soap out there. High Point is an original fact-based drama with nonstop action, witty one-liners, humor, danger, and backstabbing suspense that will hold you captive from page one to the end. Give it a try! It’s a story you won’t forget.

 

Q: Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A: Both. If the squiggly lines pop up as I go, I fix them. Most of the hard editing takes place once the book is completely done. I go over it with two programs, then my partner proofreads it, then I proof it with read-aloud. The read-aloud helps me catch tiny things my eyes miss after reading a book at least a dozen times. It’s interesting how our eyes will perceive mistakes because we’ve spent so much time in the book. Listening and following along has been extremely helpful. It keeps me focused and I employ a second sense to pick up tiny little errors.

 

Q: Describe your writing space/office!

A: My favorite recliner chair, white leather that is very old so I have arm covers on it, new foam stuffed under the seat because the padding got so thin, but it’s my chair that was my stepdad’s. To my right is my marble-top end table with two drawers. I keep my water, four phones, my mouse, a wooden crate with tissues, dental floss, and device chargers in it. A book, a journal, and a plush blue ball given to me on my birthday from my service dog. She actually picked it out and brought it over. I didn’t see it at first so it got jammed under the chair. Later that day, she was digging at the foot thingy and she doesn’t ever do that, so I raised it and she dug the blue ball out that she’d pulled out of her massive toy collection. It’s a precious gift! The first thing she ever played with was a plush blue ball identical to it until it became an orb. I was touched that she chose one of her new backups to give me. To my front is a bedtable that is adjustable. It holds my all-in-one desktop with a 24-inch screen so I can sit farther away from the screen. (easier on the eyes) On each side are two Bose speakers for movies and music. In front of the computer are two iPads, a stack of soft cloths, four pens, a notepad and memo book, and a spoon to scratch my back LOL. To my right is my fiancé in his huge recliner chair with his own computer. All of this is in the corner of our living room. I love cozy corners. Nobody is allowed in my “office with no walls” except my service dog.

 

Q: What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A: Ramen noodles cooked in chicken broth. I can never get enough. I can’t eat too many, though, because I have a wheat intolerance. Life is cruel! I love stuffing a mouthful in and savoring the soft yummy goodness.

 

Q: What’s your favorite genre to read?

A: Romance. But I don’t read as much as I used to before I started writing my own. I was an avid bookworm until I published my first novel. I don’t really feel like reading more after all the edits and writing. I’d rather watch a good romantic movie.

 

Q: What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

A: Holiday Road Trip with Patrick Muldoon. It’s a sweet romance with humor and just the right amount of conflict. An all-around feel-good movie.

 

Q: What do you do when you have free time?

A: Play with dolls. I have life-sized Masterpiece dolls and 18-inch Gotz dolls that I enjoy dressing, posing, and photographing.

 

Q: What are three words that describe your Main Characters?

A: Intense, authentic, fascinating.

 

Q: What can readers expect from you next?

A: More original romance with suspense and fantasy. Those are my two favorite genres to write. I have some gorgeous covers and stories started. I’m waiting for that spark of inspiration to hit me. Sometimes it comes through a song. I recently finished edits on a sixteen-book series I wrote for a publisher. I’m ready to dive back into my Indie books where I get to control the story. Excerpt One:

 

A shadow of disappointment prowled through my mind. He’d slammed on the brakes. I could’ve taken it as rejection. But he was no fool. He was bound to uncover the truth before giving too much of himself.

 

“We forgot to bring lunch,” I pointed out as we entered the cave.

 

“Oh yeah. I had other things on my mind. Maybe we’ll find some berries.”

 

“In May?” I giggled. “For that matter, why not root around in logs for honeycombs.”

 

He laughed. “We could do that.” Then he dipped his brows in a comical expression and said in a deep voice, “I’ll fight off the bears for you, my love.”

 

Love? He dropped the L-word? I stared at him. Was it a slip? Or a mere casual expression? After all, Europeans used it very casually. My thoughts went into overdrive. I hated when that happened.

 

“Let’s explore. Maybe the natives left behind some jerky,” he teased with a grin.

 

“The eternal optimist,” I countered. “I love it.”

 

We wandered deeper into the cave between moss-covered slate walls. Water trickled down the sides. The cave smelled musty. Something skittered across the rocky floor. I screamed and leaped sideways.

 

“There are creepy crawlies in here!”

 

“I saw that,” he said. “No worries. They’re more afraid of us than we are of them.”

 

“Uh…speak for yourself.” I shrieked again. “Jett!” I had jumped onto a ledge a foot above ground and clung to the wall. “I’m not this much country. Can we go please?”

 

“Okay, doll.” He smiled apologetically. “There’s nothing to see in here anyway. I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

 

Something sticky brushed my face. I swatted frantically but seemingly had entangled myself in a web. The more panicked I became the worse things got. My flailing arms gathered more webbing. I slipped off the ledge in all my thrashing about and tumbled to the ground, scraping my arms and legs on the way down.

 

“Mia!” He caught my arms. “Stop. Baby, stop moving!”

 

“Oh no…” I whimpered. “What is it?”

 

“Nothing,” he replied calmly but apprehension snuck into his voice. “Just stay very, very still, doll.”

 

“Omigosh,” I cried.

 

He snapped a twig from a branch sticking out of the wall and in my peripheral vision his arm moved painstakingly slowly. I held my breath and didn’t dare twitch. A couple of agonizing minutes later, he tossed the stick aside then swept me into his arms.

 

“We should get the hell out of here,” he muttered.

 

I clung to him. “What was it?”

 

“You don’t wanna know.”

 

“Ew. Ew. Did it bite me? Am I okay?”

 

“Sshh, you’re safe now. It never touched your skin. It saw all that beautiful blonde hair and thought, hm, a perfect place to spell out the word radiant.”

 

“Omigosh. It was one of those…I can’t even say it. Ew. Ew. Get me out of here.”

 

He broke into a run with me in his arms. I didn’t take a full breath until we exited the cave.

 

“I need another bath.” I continued frenetically brushing my arms and head, still in panic mode.

 

We made our way back to the waterhole and I didn’t hesitate to strip down and dive in. I submerged myself, scrubbing my face and hair furiously. He dove in with me. When I finally calmed down, convinced I’d rid myself of anything that’d hitched a ride, I relaxed and casually swam around.

 

“Seems I’ve discovered your one fear,” he said upon swimming over to me. “You don’t like bugs.”

 

“No. I don’t. Especially the kind that makes webs.” I shivered at the thought.

 

“I’m really sorry.” He began to laugh. “I had no idea. I don’t mean to laugh. Honest. I’m not mocking you. But you were a sight back there.”

 

“Ha-ha.” I scowled. “Why’d you sound so urgent when telling me to stop moving?”

 

“I didn’t want it to bite you. Those things typically aren’t aggressive unless they feel threatened. And you, my dear, were definitely in a frenzy.”

 

“Now I’m cold, hungry, and freaked out. I’m never going into a cave again.”
