Starlight Bender
by Sofia Nedic
GENRE: Fantasy
Imani Stone has a secret—she possesses an ancestral power to bend
starlight.
Having
grown up in the lush, magical hills surrounding the ancient city of Lumenor,
she is no stranger to star-gazing, potion-making, or tarot-reading. However, in
the time of civil war in her city, Imani must hide her power to avoid being
recruited by the queen’s legions or killed by the ruthless rebels. But
everything changes once the city learns of an incoming army of warriors
threatening to destroy Lumenor and steal their starlight crystal. Imani is met
with a choice—remain in hiding and help her family or risk everything and join
the queen’s legions.
But
does she have what it takes to be a legionnaire?
Can
she help save Lumenor, or will she be the cause of its demise?

EXCERPT:
“You administered my daughter the healer’s aid without my
permission?” Mother’s hand cupped my cheek before she checked my forehead for
fever.
“I don't need anyone’s permission to choose what’s best for
my legionnaires.”
His legionnaires? Kirrah’s cloak, I passed the test! I
passed the trials! I am one of them!
Mother didn't partake in my thrill. “Your legionnaire? My
daughter is going home with me as soon as she awakens.”
Commander’s voice remained firm, as did his willpower. “The
only place you will be going to is prison unless you leave promptly. Be
grateful we didn't jail you and your husband for hiding Imani all these years.
She is quite powerful, if only she was trained in time—”
“She’d be dead long ago if she was trained, fighting Queen
Astra’s endless war with the rebels,” Mother interrupted. “I think not.”
Commander Izaak exhaled through his teeth, running out of
patience. “You know you have no say in this matter. If it makes you feel any
better, Imani is joining my daughter’s legion. I will keep an eye on her.”
Mother smacked her lips, and despite not being able to see
her, I knew the exact face she made. It almost made me feel bad for the
commander. “A fine daughter you raised, she was ready to kill my child! How is
that supposed to make me feel any better?”
“Careful now.” Commander’s tone sharpened. “Leave the bag
you brought beside the bed, we will make sure Imani gets it. It is time we
leave her to recover. Come on, hurry.”
“I will go at my pace.” Mother stood her ground. “And shall
anything happen to my girl, I will personally hold you responsible.”
“As you wish.”
Mother planted a soft kiss on my cheek and whispered into my
ear. “I love you.”
I listened to her receding steps, wishing I could say it
back.
