After breaking her engagement and traveling 800 miles to start her life over, literature student Zoie is ready to live her life within the books she reads and the worlds she creates on the page. She will live her life solo — only her stuffed animal Judy by her side.

Werewolf and literature professor Hugh has long been wary of letting people into his life, even for someone who’s almost 200. His life in Birmingham, Alabama, and his only two friends in the world are enough to keep him content. Not happy, but as near as he figures is possible.

Neither is ready for the literal sparks that fly when they meet. But Hugh knows those sparks mean his heart belongs to Zoie, whether she wants it or not. Desperate to prove he’s worthy of her, Hugh takes Zoie to places mortals are forbidden, drawing dangerous attention to them both.

Now, together with their closest friends, Hugh and Zoie fight against ancient foes and even more ancient laws for their lives and their love.

Interview with Katie Groom

Tell us about your latest book, who is the main character(s) and what can we expect when we

pick it up?

Fixed Moon is a paranormal romance centered around Hugh, a nearly 200 year old werewolf, and Zoie, a woman in her mid 20’s that just wants to get away from the same path that she seems to continually go down. On October 4, 2022, you can pick up Fixed Moon and find out what happens after they meet and sparks fly, taking them down a path that challenges some very ancient laws in the supernatural world. It’s a paranormal romance, but also a buddy adventure.

Give us an out of context quote from your book to warm our hearts:

“I promise.” She held her pinky out in front of him. “I pinky promise.”

He touched the tip of her finger with his index finger. “OK.”

Her mouth dropped. “You don’t know what a pinky promise is?” She then realized that he was never a nine year old girl. She fixed his hand so that it was in proper pinky promise position. “You do this.” She linked their pinkies together. “And then you say ‘pinky promise’. But be sure that when you make a pinky promise that you really mean it and intend to keep it.”

Who are some authors that you look for inspiration?

I particularly and vocally enjoy Twilight (so Stephenie Meyer) and the Crave series (Tracy Wolff). I also love the way that Holly Jackson crafts a mystery (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series). I’m a huge fan of Olivia Dade. Additionally the books Without Condition by Sonora Taylor and Mine by Emily Merrill have stuck with me — FOR YEARS. Kat Cho’s Wicked Fox also weaves a legend into it so perfectly. I also consider musicians that write their own lyrics as authors, so I love the way that musicians such as Hanson, Bruce Springsteen, and Dolly Parton expertly crafts their words and music to tell stories in their own way.

Fire down below! Whats the first object you save?

Technically, she’s not an object, but my dog Delta is the first thing I would grab in any situation. After that, my Pappy’s pipe; it’s probably the one inanimate object that I just don’t feel like I could ever replace. It still smells like his tobacco — and I’ve had it for ten years.

Advice for newly sparking writers in three sentences or less:

Believe in your work. If you don’t believe in it, no one else will.

Which of your characters would you want to share a campfire with, and why?

Cade. They cook their marshmallows the same way that I do, so I know that they wouldn’t make fun of me. :) Also, anyone is safe next to Cade. They are the truest and bravest of friends, so if a bear attacks us in the woods, I know they’ve got me!

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any new books you are looking forward to?

I am currently reading a couple books from my childhood (Anne of Green Gables & Little House on the Prairie), and I have the latest Outlander novel started. I have Vicious Spirits by Kat Cho lined up for next. I loved Wicked Fox, so I’m really looking forward to this book.

Can you briefly describe your writing process for us?

I don’t know that I have a process, exactly. I usually write a scene that could appear anywhere in the book and just work around that in random order. Eventually, once I’ve gotten enough material, I write an outline — very basic — and then go from there. I either listen to the playlist for the character I’m writing for or put a “fireplace” on the television (usually this is either the Frozen fireplace or The Witcher fireplace). I get some tea and start typing.

What is next on your writerly horizon?

I can’t give too much detail, but just know that Hugh’s story isn’t over.

Excerpt Teaser:

Zoie started looking for different passageways and doors; she contemplated what her best options were. A big city? Or maybe a rural area where the people were nice and welcoming. But, these portals weren’t even marked. She didn’t know where she would be going. She didn’t even know why she would be going. Just for fun, sure. But why would she end up picking a place?

She started casually walking until she felt pulled somewhere. The first four or five paths just made her feel uneasy. The next one smelled of chocolate, and she felt like that was probably a trick. Hansel and Gretel style tricky. And then, she heard a saxophone playing and turned towards a large, yellow, bowstring bridge. At the end of that path was a steel door with three grooves etched into it. Two from the opposite corners at the top, wiggling towards the center of the door. The third came from the bottom of the door, curved to the right and came back to meet the others.

Zoie took Hugh’s hand and started walking over the bridge. The saxophone music got louder and louder the further she went.

As she reached her hand towards the point where the three grooves met, water started to flow in each one, creating three little streams on the door.

She turned and looked at Hugh and jumped a little. Placing her hand at the center of the streams, knowing with absolute certainty where this door was going to lead, and pushed it open.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Katie Groom grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Management from PITT and her master’s in Employment and Labor Relations from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2016, she decided to move to Alabama in order to avoid as much snow as possible (and to advance her career in Human Resources).

When she isn’t working, Katie enjoys reading, writing, jokingly critiquing movies and TV, and campaigning that the plural of moose should be meese. She also loves to take in live music (especially Hanson) and traveling, with the goal of reaching each of the continents. Katie’s favorite pastime, however, is spending time with her beloved Shih tzu, Delta.
