What are your favorite TV shows?
1.
The Marvelous
Mrs. Maisel. I love the interaction between Midge and Susie, and I love the
setting of 1960 New York City. Her family is hilarious, especially her dad, and
Midge is so unconventional. She’s a “typical” upper-middle-class Jewish woman
who has a mouth like a truck driver and is very blue in her comedy routines.
That show makes me feel good.
2.
Downton
Abbey. I am so in love with that show and all the characters, although
Robert, the earl, is probably my favorite. They’re rich people who are also
very kind and treat their help like family and I love the downstairs
characters, too, especially Anna and Bates.
3.
Cobra Kai. That
show is so addictive. Once I started watching it, I literally couldn’t stop. I
didn’t think that a show about two rival karate dojos would be so captivating,
but it is.
4.
Sex and the
City. Of course. What woman doesn’t love that show? It’s not just the frank
sex talk or the sex itself, but I love the relationship between the four women
and living their lives with them.
5.
Succession. While
I love Downton Abbey partly because
it shows rich people acting good, I love Succession
for the opposite reason. They’re rich people stabbing each other in the
back and insulting each other to each other’s faces, and they’re really not
good people. I do love Kendall, though, because, every so once in awhile, you
can see his heart and his fears and he’s the only one who shows that. I love
him the best for that reason.

Grace and
Frankie. They are a riot!

A Million
Little Things and This Is Us. Two
network shows that compel me, because I’ve always loved ensemble shows that are
really modern-day soap operas. I love the relationship between the brothers and
sister on This Is Us and the best
friends on A Million Little Things.
What is your favorite meal?
Stroud’s fried
chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and fried cinnamon rolls. I could eat that
every day if not for the fact that the food is terrible for you! Stroud’s is a
restaurant in Kansas City, and they make the best fried chicken in the whole
world. If I were on death row and I could get any last meal I wanted, I would
get the above.
If you were to write a series of novels,
what would it be about?
My current series
centers on four sisters, their parents, their grandmother and their friends.
It’s set on a beach and there’s plenty of heart, drama, forgiveness, joy,
heartbreak, loyalty and love.
Is there a writer you idolize? If so who?
Colleen
McCullough. The Thornbirds was such a
masterpiece. The way she was able to weave in details about the Australian
outback into an epic story where there was so much tragedy and heartbreak and
make it so compelling astounded me. And the central love story just slayed me.
I so rooted for Ralph and Meggie, even though they could never be. Tragic love
stories are sometimes the best kind.
How did you come up for the title of this
book?
Because the
B&B in the book is called The Orchid Inn.

Excerpt One:
As Willow Killeen worked on a painting that she had to have
completed for her show tonight, she also thought about her other
"job." Well, it wasn't really a job so much as a calling, one that
she refused to charge for. It was against her creed as a witch to make money
off of her gifts.
She sometimes wished that she could charge for her services,
as working as an artist wasn't much of a living, it turned out. She was good at
her art but not good enough. At least, her art wasn't good enough to sustain
her in 'Sconset beach, the very expensive village she chose to call home. True,
she lived in a guest house on a piece of property that was owned by her aunt,
who only charged her $1000 a month, which, for Nantucket, was a steal - but
there were months that she couldn't hardly come up with that rent and still
afford to eat.
Still, she was fortunate that she didn't really need to
leave her house to earn money, and she knew it. And, to keep her creative
juices flowing, she found that the more she helped people out in the world, the
better she did with her art. So, she kept a steady stream of clients who came
to her for spell work, herbal remedies, crystal healing and chakra balancing,
all of which she specialized in. Willow was a healer first, artist second, and
that was how she preferred it.
She looked out her window and saw a young girl coming up the
dirt path that led to her guest house, and she groaned. "Not her,"
she muttered under her breath. The painting that she was working on, which was
a brightly colored portrait of a beautiful couple she'd seen at the Farmer's
Market - she tended towards riotous colors throughout her subjects' faces and
hair, like Henri Matisse's famous portrait of his wife - was forgotten.
