and, to his surprise, he gets flirted with right back.
Miguel is surprised the handsome ER doc even knows who he
is. His own life is a little dull, but making eyes at Doc and getting a
response supercharges his days. After he’s injured on the job, Miguel gets a
firsthand look at Doc Rosco’s incredible bedside manner, not to mention the
rest of him.
As the two men tentatively start exploring the attraction
that has simmered for months, the head of medicine takes exception to their
budding relationship. Pressure builds, and the two men must make decisions
about their lives, their jobs, and the one thing that could make each of them

“Uncle Miguel, come swim with
us,” Juan asked, dripping as he stood in front of him.
“I can’t. I have this bandage and
it can’t get wet. The doctor said so.” He tilted his head toward Rosco, who
nodded.
“Please,” Juan asked Doc, pulling
out the huge eyes and even the pooched lower lip. “Let Uncle Miguel come
swimming with us. He neeeeds to.” The lip stuck out a little more, and Miguel
turned away to keep from laughing.
“But he can’t. He hurt his arm
saving people. Uncle Miguel is a hero, but he got hurt doing it, and his sore
arm needs a chance to heal. Being in the water won’t help him.” Doc crooked his
finger, and Juan went right over. “You know how it hurts when you fall and get
an owie?” Damn, Rosco was amazing. He had Juan eating out of his hand in seconds.
Juan nodded and lifted his knee.
“I got an owie right here, but
Mama put a Band-Aid on it and some spray stuff and now it’s all better. Can’t
you get some spray stuff for Uncle Miguel and make it all better so he can
swim?”
“I wish I could. But your uncle
got a big owie, and I had to put a lot of stitches in it to close it up
properly so it can heal.”
Juan’s eyes bugged as he turned
back to him, his mouth hanging open. “You mean like Frankenstein? Is he going
to turn into a monster and eat people?”
Miguel had to give Doc credit—he
took the question in stride.
“Nope. And in week or so, I’ll
take out the stitches and he’ll be a lot better. But until then, he has to keep
it clean and bandaged properly. So to be safe, he shouldn’t swim for a while.”
Doc grinned. “Why don’t you go play with your sister and the other kids, okay?
Then in a little while, we can get ice cream sandwiches.”
Juan seemed happy and took a few
slow steps, looking at him and then the water before coming back to Doc with a
smile, as though he had figured it out. “He can’t go in the water because kids
might pee in it, right?” He was so earnest, like he had discovered the secret.
“Something like that,” Doc told
him, and Juan hurried away happy.
A few seconds later, a familiar
voice drifted over the din. “He can’t come in because you peed in it.”
Miguel looked to where Juan was
talking to another boy. Then Juan turned away and began playing in one of the
other, non-peed-in, pools.
“Good God,” Doc snickered. “That
kid is way too smart for his own good.”
