Talking with author Missy Hale

How long did it take you to get your rough draft finished on your latest release?

I started writing on January 18, 2013 and I finished just before my birthday in 2014, so a little over a year.  The rough draft was a 150,000-word monster.  Thank god for editors!

What do you do when you're not writing?

I used to be a bit of a recluse, spending my time online and constantly watching Netflix, but lately I've really put down roots where I am and made an effort to make good friends (not easy for an introvert like me), so I've been spending a lot of time out of the house and socializing.  Other than that, I've been making more time for crafting as of late—I like working with my hands.

Are any of your characters like you?

Out of my 100 Days boys, I always thought that I was much more like Aiden, this confused, nomadic creature who only really knows love in its unrequited form.  But a few people have told me they see more of me in Jake!  So I guess that my big characters all have a little bit of me in them.

If zombies attacked, what kind of supplies would you want?

A backpack big enough to carry at least a week's worth of supplies, canned goods, a hand-held weapon of some sort (a machete, or an axe—much more effective than a gun), a decent supply of toilet paper, plenty of clean water, rope, and a tarp.  Done!

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Finding the “roads less travelled.”  I really wanted to do something different with this particular love story, because although I adore the concept of 'boy meets boy,' so many authors out there have done it better than I could!  I wanted to explore a friendship that already has a deep foundation, and explore where it could go if love was brought into the equation.  It was tricky to strike the balance between too much and not enough.

Do you keep a notebook near you for when new ideas pop into your head?

Absolutely!  I keep a pad and pen handy in my bag whenever I'm not at home, and I also have a growing list of notes in a Notepad app on my phone.  I keep meaning to collate it all in one place...

How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?

Not as often as it used to!  There's been a lot of big changes in my life recently which have taken time to process, but that part of my mind is never fully asleep anymore.  Quite often I'll still find myself wandering around having conversations with my characters—my friends are used to it by now.

When and where do you like to write?  Are there any favourite places you like to go?

I've found that I write best at night, and/or when I'm procrastinating other things.  I usually write in my room, either in bed, at my desk, or in the chair that my dad made for me.  Sometimes, though, you have to get out of the room and free up your mind.  If I find that something isn't working or that my words are sounding stale, I take my laptop or my notebook and pen and I go into the living room, or to a cafe or to a park.  New stimulus helps grease the wheels, so to speak.

What has been the defining moment in your career that made you think, “Yes, I am now a writer!”?

When I came home one lunchtime to find the physical proof copy of 100 Days waiting on my door mat.  It had all just been words on a screen for so long, and I've always preferred physical books over digital books, that it was the first time the whole thing felt real!

If a movie or TV production company chose to produce your book into a series of shows or a movie, who would your ideal cast be?

I love this question!  Since the very beginning, I've had a couple of actors in mind who look the most like what I see in my head when I think of Aiden and Jake.  For Aiden, it would be Andrew Garfield, and for Jake, it would be Xavier Samuel.  Aren't they both so handsome?

Excerpt:
Because anything really could happen, couldn’t it? What if what happened in Philadelphia wasn’t a total mistake, but simply the prelude to Jake finally listening to what his instincts have been telling him for weeks? What if, what if, what if…
“What are you doing? Come see this!” Aiden calls out.
Jake takes a deep breath and steps out of the shadows. Aiden is silhouetted against the fading sun, the light picking out the auburn in his hair, and as he stretches his arms up over his head, one finger hooked through the woven bracelet he bought earlier, he grins out at the horizon. Jake feels as if he’s watching Aiden through brand new eyes; he knows that there is rescue in those arms. Suddenly he wants to fall into them and hold on until he feels safe.
Aiden turns away from the vista, pushes his sunglasses up on top of his head and looks down at Jake, his eyes sparkling with warmth and light. He leans forward and holds out his hand, and he looks… beautiful.
