Talking with author Jessica Jefferson
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I write historical romance. I’ll read most anything, but love writing
regency. I make my home in north-central
Indiana.
I used to live a lot closer to Chicago,
and I’m still a little traumatized from the move (it’s only been ten
years). I like to think that I live in
“almost Chicago”,
but in all reality I’m closer to Ohio
than Illinois. I used to work two full time jobs – one in
healthcare, the other as mother to two girls – ages 8 and 3. Now, I’m a full
time writer and mother, with a dab of healthcare here and there.
What is your book(s) about?
Taming Miss Tisdale is book two in the
Regency Blooms series. It’s about Miss
Tamsin Tisdale, a fiery hoyden who is sent away from London
till she can, in a sense, be ‘tamed’.
While in the country, she meets Mr. Marc Winston—a gentleman she
believes to be genuine and nothing like the Society men she’s used to. Only, Marc isn’t the honest man she thinks he
is. His secrets not only jeopardize his
relationship with Tamsin, but his place in Society as well.
What are you currently working on?
I’m
currently writing the third book in the series, Chasing Miss Tisdale. It’s
about another Tisdale sister (there are four). She’s the ugly duckly and falls
in love with an unattainable man. It’s
probably my favorite in the series ( I say that with all the books).
What do you do when you’re not writing?
I’m
a big camper. We recently purchased an RV, so I’m not too sure it’s still
considered camping. My family just loves the outdoors. Maybe not the eight year old, but I’m sure
she’ll grow into it.
What was the hardest part of writing your book(s)?
Probably
the actual writing of my books. I have two children, 3 and 8. When I started my
first book, I was working full time at a hospital and had just returned to
college to obtain another degree. Somehow, I managed to write a book, but it
wasn’t easy.
If you could sit down with any author dead or alive who would
it be?
Maybe
Kathleen Woodiwiss? She’s the queen of
historical romance and I’d just like to know how she managed to accomplish all
that she did.
If you write a series do you reread your previous books
before you begin the new one?
I
hate reading my books again, so no. After the editing process, I don’t touch
them again. It’s a bit like hearing your voice on voicemail – I’m always like,
“was that really me?”
Is there anything you wish to say to your readers?
Just
to let me know their thoughts. I love hearing from the readers and really take
their comments to heart.
When
writing, how do you keep track of timelines, ideas, inspiration and such? By
notes on the computer, a notebook perhaps?
I have a binder that holds all the information I need to survive in the
writing world. If there’s ever a fire, I’m saving my children, husband, dog…and
that book.
I’m
always looking for book recommendations. What books have you been reading?
Would you recommend them?
I love Violetta Rand. She has a Viking series from Soul Mate Publishing
and will be having a New Adult series come out from Random House,
Loveswept. Good stuff.
I really enjoy Jennifer McQuiston – she writes historical romance, but
has done a really good job of creating funny books in settings outside of London.

Jason looked bored. “Get to the
important part, Grayson. Was she beautiful?”
Again, Marc was ill-prepared to
answer such a question. Taken individually, that large mouth, those plump pink
lips, her long nose, red hair, and freckled skin—nothing about her was
spectacular by any means. But together, all those odd pieces and parts, which
seemed so ordinary at first glance, fit together to form the picture of a
particularly stunning woman.
“Yes,” he answered quite simply. No
need to give Jason any more fodder for discussion by rambling on like some sort
of awful poet.
Jason grinned from ear to ear.
“Well, that is quite eventful, indeed.” He swept a crumb off his jacket sleeve.
“Does this original have a name?”
Marc stopped suddenly, his coffee
halfway to his lips. “Name?”
Jason laughed. “Yes, her name. This
unique creature has to have a name. Diana? Aphrodite? Venus, perhaps?” Then
Jason stopped laughing as realization spread over his face like a mordant rash.
“You don’t know her bloody name, do
you?”
Marc set his cup down on the table
and stared at it. “She never volunteered the information and I never bothered
to ask.”
