Angels on my Shoulder (and pillow, and shower
shelf, and driving my car, and…)
Arguably,
the most important thing about setting up a new book for me is creating the
people who are going to fill the story. It’s also the most exciting part of the
job, too! The subject was a fascinating one as I sat at The Cosmopolitan Hotel
in Vegas recently with a writing friend, on a brief hiatus from enjoying the
festivities at Jimmy Thomas’ RNC bash. As we watched the parade of rather
interesting characters flow by (all right, so that’s a vast understatement and
I’ll leave it at that…some things really do
need to stay in Vegas), we inevitably started making up stories for each of
them. It was astounding how many different plots and “life stories” that we
came up with!
The human
race, in all its beauty and complexity, never ceases to astound and amaze
me—and yet we are all bound by these funny little things called feelings that
make every day an exciting possibility to wake up to. It’s what makes a
writer’s job so damn interesting!
The two
people who take center stage in my new book, “Handcuffed By Her Hero,” are a
pair of the most fascinating people it’s ever been a pleasure to spend time
with. To say they consumed my brain (and just about every other part of me too;
he he he) is a vast understatement. Zeke Hayes found it very necessary to advise me on every aspect of life for a few
months, including how I drove the car (never fast enough) and how I spent my
dreams (never enough about him, apparently). Thank goodness Rayna Chestain was
usually there to beat him back a bit for me!
Admittedly,
part of the blame for their delicious domination is mine. Being a really visual
person, one of the most fun parts about discovering a new character is getting
to find the visual inspiration for that person. Usually (and inevitably), the
celebrity I pick shares quite a few traits with the characters he or she is
playing.
Take the
incomparable Manu Bennett, who morphed into Zeke for me. Besides the fact that
both men are built like lion wrestlers, Manu also has an intensity to his
acting that was very much a part of
Z, too. On the flip side, both men have a tendency to slip into an easy smile,
followed by smoldering sensuality. Yep, Manu was absolutely the best pick for
Zeke!
For
Rayna, the search was exhaustive. In the first W.I.L.D. Boys book, I’d
described Ray as having fiery red hair—though her year-long captivity had
turned her into somebody a bit more meek than she usually was. In her romantic
journey with Zeke, she rediscovers her backbone and her submissive side, together. Tricky growth as a person? Hell,
yeah. Though there are lots of incredible redheads in this world, I finally
found that perfect blend of soft and strong in the beautiful Hayley Williams,
who is the lead singer and songwriter for the band Paramore. Hayley not only
looks the part, but her soulful singing is perfect evidence of how deep her
heart and soul go, too. As Rayna bloomed to life on the pages of the book, she
was my constant go-to for a visual on the woman’s fiery beauty, both inside and
out.
I truly
hope that you have a great time reading “Handcuffed By Her Hero.” For everyone
who has read it and given it such wonderful feedback already, I am so grateful.
Thank you!

The W.I.L.D. Boys of Special Forces Series, Book Two
Contemporary Erotic Romance BDSM/Kink
Between a rock and a hard place.
To Sergeant Zeke Hayes, the expression has always been a non-factor. There's never been a situation he can't blast, punch, or smart-ass his way out of, which makes him the perfect fit for his Special Forces battalion--and a natural-born Dominant who's made a lot of submissives happy from Mt. Rainier to Vancouver.
That all changes when Rayna Chestain enters his world.
A rock.
From the moment Z snatches Rayna from the lair of a South Asian slave trafficker, his inner grizzly roars to life. This is a huge damn problem, because Z isn't wired to be a one-woman man. Growing up an orphan on the streets of Seattle has taught him that beyond a few hours in a dungeon, trust means disappointment and love leads to agony. But here he is, in the remote wilderness escape he'd promised not to share with anyone, harboring Rayna from a fiend who now wants his pound of revenge flesh from her.
A hard place.
Sheltering Rayna? Z's never done anything more right in his life. But wanting her? Dreaming of her beneath him, surrendering to his passion and domination? It's the most forbidden fruit he can crave...and the only thing he can't stop thinking about.
A new beginning?
This is a dead-end canyon that no rifle, bomb or sweet talk will let Zeke escape from. The only way out is to confront the reality of what Rayna has done to him...the mountain she's moved in his intractable heart.
Angel Payne has been writing since childhood, with a “past life” that includes entertainment reporting, hospitality industry publications, and historical romance. She’s also dabbled in radio and nightclub DJ gigs, ramp modeling, and special events planning. But the world of erotica romance is the best rabbit hole she’s ever been down…with no plans to resurface any time soon! If she can encourage a few people to let their darker wings take flight, then she’s happier for it. Angel spreads her own wings in Southern California, where she lives with her husband and child, and enjoys healthy obsessions for the outdoors, gardening, kick-toosh rock music, “Revenge”, and “Vampire Diaries.”

Thank you for the review Dawn's Reading Nook.
I enjoy learning about what inspirations are used in creating characters. Z seems to be the perfect fit. The eyes get me.

Thanks for sharing! It's so fun to see how the author envisions the characters and compare it to my mental image.
