Welcome Starla Kay Today and a Contest

Welcome to my Reading Nook, Starla Kaye. Please make yourself at home and let my cabana boys/girls get you a drink.

Comfortable? Wonderful. Now let’s get started.

What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants or a combination of both?
I’m basically one of those fly by the seat of your pants writers. I have a fairly good idea of what my characters look like (I find some kind of photo), some of their background, a setting, a general plot line, and some plot points I’d like to get to. I learned a long time ago not to outline because (1) I feel like I’m done with the story at that point, and (2) my characters generally don’t want to follow it.

What did you do before you were a writer? Do you write full time?
I’ve been one of those Jane of all trades people: Avon rep, legal secretary, program director for a senior services, and community coordinator for an accounting firm, whatever. Now I write full time and I love it.

If you were going to cast the characters of your book, what actors would get the part?
In reference to this particular book, The CEO and the Cowboy, I would like someone like Alex O’Loughlin (Hawaii Five O) for the cowboy and Pierce Brosnan (in his younger days).

I know you're not supposed to show favoritism but who's been your favorite character to write?
I enjoy each of my characters as I write their story, but I do have favorites. My all time favorite is Brodie Durward from THE GREAT SCOTTISH DEVIL, although I also fell in love with Rowan from THEIR LADY GLORIANA. In this story, I would have to go with Calhoun, because I’m a huge cowboy fan.

Do you have a favorite TV show you can't miss?
I have several shows I enjoy, but picking one favorite I’d have to say NCIS: Los Angeles.

If you could date any character from any book, which would it be and why-no it doesn't have to be from your books?
I’ll pick someone from my books. I wouldn't really to live in the medieval time period, but I’m really drawn to Brodie, from THE GREAT SCOTTISH DEVIL. Big, tough, stubborn, emotionally wounded, and so desperately in need of a good woman to love him.

Please share with us some juicy details about your latest release.
Calhoun is a troubled man, finally facing the fact that he is meant to love another man. He struggles with that fact and particularly when he meets Daniel at a wedding (for the woman Calhoun had been engaged to for five years). He is shocked to feel an immediate attraction and he tries to fight it. But Daniel, who also is surprised about a sudden new attraction, is experienced and determined. The heat is there almost from the start and get hotter.

What was your inspiration behind this book?
I wanted to put two of my favorite kinds of heroes together: a cowboy and a businessman. I also like having it be the first time for one of the men. I’ve done this kind of story line before in STARTING OVER, also from Decadent Publishing.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
My TRP is staggering because I like so many different authors. I tend to like authors who do a series of related stories, because the characters become like friends to me and I want to follow their lives and the lives of others I meet in the stories. Right now I am reading some of the Chicago Stars series books from Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so what are your favorites Artists and or albums?
I always have country western music on in the background or football. I’m a huge football fan…gotta love those taut butts. Country Western music doesn’t distract me as some other music genres do, and occasionally I’ll catch a title or a line that inspires me.

If you could go any place in the world and to any time period, what place time would you choose to visit?
I travel as much as I can and I’m going to France this fall, again. Other than places where Americans aren’t particularly welcome, I will go anywhere. But I have always been in love with Scotland and I love castles.

What is your favorite super power and why do you want it?
I would like to be able to blink myself to places here on Earth, other planets, of other times.

If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?
Warning: You could be in my next book.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Chocolate, lots of it. And… it might be best if you don’t know.

CONTEST: Leave a comment with your email address to have a chance to win a copy of either MAGGIE'S SECRET WISH or STARTING OVER from Decadent Publishing and a special gift: a Western placemat.

The CEO And The Cowboy Teaser

BLURB
The whole thing about relationships and feelings confuses the heck out of Calhoun. He’s a simple cowboy and he’d been planning to marry a long-time friend for a while. When he finally realizes it doesn’t feel right, he lets her go. He probably shouldn’t have gone to her wedding to another man, but she wanted him there. But that’s when he really gets confused. His eye is drawn to a seriously hot businessman…and that sure does unnerve him…and yet….

Emotionally burned by the last man he thought he’d loved, Daniel isn’t anxious to replace him. But there is something about the proud, bedroom-eyed cowboy who shows up at his friend’s wedding. The CEO isn’t even sure if the cowboy’s gay, although the heat firing between them makes him wonder….

What he does know is that he plans to find out.

EXCERPT
“Want a tour?” He desperately wanted to get him up to his bedroom. He wanted to strip him out of that Western-cut suit, find out if he was a boxers or briefs man. He was curious if those pecs were as muscled as he suspected, if the abs were six-packed. He longed to….
“Why did you really bring me here?”
Surprised, he stood quietly for several long seconds, debating how to answer. Then he decided actions might just be better than words at the moment. If he had the nerve. Yes! Yes, you do.
He moved directly in front of him, watched the man’s nostrils flare, and his eyes widen. But the cowboy didn’t step back, and he didn’t look ready to send a fist into his face. Nerves tangling in his stomach, he put his hands around Cordell’s neck and leaned closer.
The big man tensed, but still didn’t tell him to back off. He didn’t say a word, just stood there looking wary, but determined. Clearly curious. Cautious, too.
Unable to resist any longer, he slanted his mouth over the tempting lips. Fire seared him. Need. Desperation.
Cordell stiffened even more, and he was pretty sure his cowboy had never done this before. He appeared uncomfortable, and his heart pounded so hard he could feel it. Yet he didn’t pull away.
Not wanting to frighten the man off, he gently slid his tongue along the crease of those lips until, finally, they opened. He had to have more, but he had to go slowly.
Surprising him again, he felt Cordell put his arms around his waist, pushing under his suit coat, pulling him closer. God, yes!
Heat raged through him, and he felt the warmth of the body pressed against his. Their hearts thudded, chest against chest. Then the man shuddered even as they tangled tongues. They kissed hungrily, only Daniel apparently familiar with this first sexual dance. Cordell seemed lost in the moment. Although he sensed the cowboy hadn’t done this before, he had moved past being hesitant, gone straight for being desperate to satisfy a need he no doubt hadn’t known he had.

You must have so many ideas of characters, plot and relationship development when you are writing.

Starla Kaye said...

Some writers struggle to come up with story ideas and characters. I'm not one of them.

My problem is after having published over 50 stories that I struggle with not using the same names again. I keep a spreadsheet, but sometimes I forget to look at it.
