Surviving Reviews
By Lisabet Sarai
I've been in a funk for a week. The reason? A recent review
of my BDSM erotic romance The Understudy at the Forbidden Bookshelf blog.
It wasn't a bad
review. The reviewer wasn't the least bit snarky – just not especially
enthusiastic. She called the novella “enjoyable”
and gave the book three and a half stars, with a three out of five flames heat
rating. Anyone perusing the review, though, could tell that the book didn't
exactly light her fire.
Am I disappointed? You bet I am. What an author craves, more
than money, more than fame, is readers who fall in love with her books. When
that doesn't happen – especially, when a book receives a publicly ho-hum
evaluation – well, it's like a love scene without an orgasm.
Whenever a Google Alert pops up in my mailbox, informing me
of a new review, I get nervous. I put off following the link until I've dealt
with all my other business for the morning. Then I cross my fingers and go
receive the verdict. A positive review will send me spinning into dizzy
celebration. A negative review sinks me into a dark well of self-doubt that's
really tough to climb out of.
Of course I know intellectually that a review offers the
personal opinions of a single reader, reflecting his or her personal tastes. If
the characteristics of my book don't align well with the reviewer's
preferences, I can't expect raves. In this particular case, the review site
focuses on BDSM fiction, much of it more hardcore than The Understudy. Compared to other work reviewed on this site, I
guess, my book is pretty tame (although I've written BDSM erotica that's far
more extreme).
This rationalization doesn't
help improve my mood, though. By erotic romance standards, The Understudy is moderately
intense. It includes detailed descriptions of bondage, spanking, whipping, butt
plugs, and anal sex. Furthermore, the D/s scenes are not play-acting. The BDSM
accoutrements aren't just there to spice up a basically vanilla relationship.
Geoff's mastery and Sarah's surrender are fundamental to their natures. In
submission, Sarah finds a kind of fulfillment she never dreamed existed.
Meanwhile, the experienced dominant is delighted, almost awed, by her devotion.
The book is romance, sure, but in my opinion, it's “real”
BDSM, too, with the core power exchange that the defines the genre.
I know that for the sake of my own sanity – and
productivity – I've got to let go of my disappointment and self-pity. I've got
other books to work on, and hopefully, other readers to enchant. I've heard
other authors say that you've got to develop a thick skin to survive bad
reviews, and I know they're right.
Still, I'd like your
opinion. I've included a snippet of one of the more intense scenes from The Understudy below. Based on this
excerpt, how many flames would you
rate this story?
I'll give a copy of the anthology Master Me, where The
Understudy originally appeared, to one person who comments on this post.
This fabulous collection also includes tales by Trina Lane, Elizabeth Coldwell,
Justine Elyot, Charlotte Stein and Jane Davitt. Please include your email
address in your comment so I can find you if you're the winner!
Excerpt from The Understudy – Rated X
I don’t remember the details of how he
bound me. I was in some sort of swoon of terror. The next thing I knew I was on
my belly, a pillow wedged under my pelvis, my arms stretched to the edges of
the mattress. I guess he must have threaded some rope through the rings on my
restraints and passed it under the bed frame.
My cheek pressed against the coverlet, I watched him bustle about
the dim room. He dragged the vanity stool over to the bed and sat beside me.
“How are you, little one? Are the bonds too tight?”
I shook my head, still too embarrassed to speak.
“How do you feel?” His tone of voice made it clear that he
expected a reply.
“Helpless,” I said finally. “And horny.”
“Good. That’s how you’re
supposed to feel.” He trailed his fingers across my bare buttocks, tracing little
spirals.
My pussy spasmed, leaking my juices onto the pillow.
“You have a lovely ass, Sarah. I really enjoyed spanking you the
other night.” He gave me a sharp pinch then smoothed the pain away, stroking
and kneading.
I found myself relaxing under his magical touch. I drifted,
enjoying his attention. When he parted my rear cheeks, however, I jolted awake.
Geoffrey brushed a fingertip across my anus. “Are
you a virgin, Sarah? Has anyone ever fucked you in the ass?” He
pressed against the clenched knot.
Panic made me jerk against the bonds. I felt something warm and
slippery spill along my crevice. “No! Don’t!”
“You’d
refuse me?”
I was silent with shame. I’d promised to obey him.
“This was your choice, little one. This is what you wanted.” He
spread the lubricant around my hole, then worked his finger into the ring of
muscle.
“I’ve changed my mind…Oh…oh!”
His wriggling set up lewd vibrations in my clit. The further he
intruded, the more intense the sensations became.
“Too late.”
I felt myself stretch as he pushed a second finger in next to the
first. I gasped as a miniature climax exploded deep in my cunt.
“Oh…oh…”
“I’d guess from your tightness that I’m the
first to ever take you here.” More fingers, pushing deeper inside my
most private place, working me open.
“Oh, sir! Please…” I was empty for a moment as he removed
his fingers. Then the oiled bulk of the plug pressed against my hole.
It just wasn’t possible for that enormous thing to
enter such a narrow passage. He exerted a steady pressure, though, and I felt
the tip breach my sphincter. He twisted, screwing the infernal object into me.
It began to hurt, my poor virgin tissues stretched to the limit. At the same
time, my clit throbbed and another climax simmered in my soaked pussy.
“Relax,” Geoffrey murmured close to my ear as the unrelenting invasion
proceeded. “Breathe. Let me in.”
His voice was hypnotic. I wanted to obey. I remembered the
lightness and peace that followed the pain of his spanking. I wanted that
again.
Geoffrey must have sensed my surrender. He gave a sharp push. The
plug popped into my rectum. I moaned, mortified by the sensations coursing
through me, the fullness of the plug expanding inside me, the overwhelming urge
to expel it.
“Good, very good. Let go, little one. Don’t
fight it.”
He stroked my buttocks, then wriggled the plug. Delicious,
obscene pleasure claimed me. The flicker of pain at my stretched entrance only
added to the stew of sensation. The movements of the toy made my clit sputter
and ache. The pleasure sparking in my cunt made the plug feel better―or
worse. I could hardly tell.
My master left for a moment while he rummaged in the suitcase.
The feelings built with each breath.
“I decided to choose a favourite toy as well,” he
chuckled. His well-manicured hand gripped the riding crop.
He didn’t give me time to comment. The crop whooshed through the air and
landed a stinging blow on my right cheek. In some dim corner of my mind, I knew
that it must hurt, but somehow the pain just turned up the heat. He slashed at
me again. I clenched down on the plug and ground my swollen pussy against the
pillow. The next stroke sent me over the edge, spiralling into sweet oblivion.
Geoffrey was still beating me when I recovered. “Good
girl,” he
breathed, as the crop whistled and my ass burned. “Take
it in. Let it out.”
I felt another orgasm coiling inside. Let it out, he had said. He
had given me permission.
Just as I was about to explode, though, he stopped. I felt the
bed shift from his weight as he climbed on and straddled me. Even through the
haze of pain and pleasure, I rejoiced at the feeling of his taut thighs
gripping my hips.
“Time for the real thing,” he
said, and popped the plug out of my ass.

Hello, Dawn,
Thanks so much for hosting me today. I hope you'll share the news about my giveaway with your readers.
Reviews are just one person's opinion. There are so many books out there that not everyone will enjoy every book. Sorry you are upset!
debby236 at gmail dot com
I know exactly how you feel, Lisabet. But Debby is right, what one person loves, another might think mediocre. Hard as it is to read, I think differing tastes and opinions are good. We wouldn't want everyone to be the same in our world. right? And besides, I think you're being too hard on yourself. There is nothing wrong with a 3.5 review.
Keep on writing, chickie. I loved the excerpt -- truly. Move on and don't spend too much time on the reviewing of your books. Just keep bringing us great reads!
Hugs, Keta

I read the snippet you provided and believe that it could lead to a great sex scene. Please keep in mind that I haven't read the entire story to see how it plays out. It's the overall setting, foreplay and penetration act (in my opinion) that can make or break a story. So far so good. In regards to reviews, positive ones are always nice to have - but the lackluster and negative ones can really do a job on your confidence. When you have time, take a look at the reviewers past reviews - you may learn that he/she may never give a resounding review on any book that they may have read. This might help put things in perspective for you better. Good luck!

I found the excerpt excellent, even though BDSM is not my main genre. I found it to be exciting, with tingles and all so don't put a whole lot of stock in the bad review. Like it is being said here not everyone is into everything and mood does count if you ask me. Keep on writing!
This reads pretty hot to me! I just had to slip off my robe. I don't read a lot of hard-core BDSM, but from the excerpt, it sure seems like you're writing the real thing. I'm guessing the reviewer just returned from Christmas shopping and was in a rotten mood from being in a crowded mall surrounded by crabby people and hideous mall holiday music. In another week, you'll forget all about it because someone will write a fabulous review!
Whoops! Here's the email. See? I was too hot and bothered to follow instructions. And now I have to sit in the dentist's chair for awhile. This will give me something to comtemplate!

Lisabet, It read very hot to me. I had to laugh since I've done that too, put off reading a review when I get notification.
Your story seems to have received a lot of very good reviews. In the end, it's really up to you if you were satisfied with what you wrote.
Lisabet, I know how you feel. The middling reviews are the most dangerous to my mind. Just remember your book my be someone else's cherished secret thrill, and you may never hear from them how much they loved the Understudy.
XXOO Kat
You never know where a reviewer is coming from. If she reads a lot of hard core erotic books this might be average. I wouldn't say I read a lot of them, but just going by this excerpt, I'd give this excerpt a 3 for heat level. If this is supposed to be a standard romance I'd raise it to a 4 or 4.5 and my eyebrows would be raised.
Whatever the heat level, I enjoyed it and would love to read the whole scene (and story).

I hate to give a bad review. The author tries their hardest. Not all books are going to be great. I love to do reviews on books that I read.
Loved this excerpt. I would love to win and read this book to finish the rest. Thanks for the chance to win.

It is the ultimate frustration. You work hard to get published, go thru endless edits, galleys and what not, promote your tail off and still can't please some folks. Unfortunate. I'm stinging from one myself along with a few not so subtly worded rejections. When we put ourselves out here, it's the price we pay. Carry on. try to put it behind you and remember why you write: to please your muse, and exercise creativity, not necessarily every reader. great post.
The sad thing about reviews is, even the best review we ever see on paper doesn't hold a candle to the true test of the erotica/erotic romance author's work: what it makes the reader FEEL.
Consider this. Even though this work only got a 3.5 on a review, how many people as we speak are reading it for the second, third, or fourth time, by themselves or with a lover? And what do you suppose they might be doing while they're reading it? It's not how long the reader takes to read it, but how many times they have to lay it aside to take care of OTHER things. ;) THOSE are the reviews we will very rarely (if ever) hear about, but they are the very epitome of what an erotica writer hopes to accomplish.
Take comfort in the fact that although you got a middle-of-the-road review, a lot of people are enjoying your work exactly the way you meant them to. Just because it hit one reviewer wrong doesn't mean your writing hits everyone that way.
Don't let a so so review get you down. There are so many of us that love your works and very enthusiast reviews do get written. As you said, not every person will love all your stories.
Please have a very Merry Christmas and don't let this one review ruin what I consider is an exceptional year for you.

Thanks to you all for your support and encouragement. Of course I know you're right. But rationality and emotion don't always jibe.
Anyway - I'll draw the winner on Saturday, so your friends still have time to comment...
Warmly,
Lisabet
It read very hot to me! I have a feeling that was just the beginning of a great sex scene, but the snippet alone was worth more than 3 stars. Like you said, it's one person's opinion, but I know how hard it is to shake that off. As a side note, I've loved everything of yours I've ever read, and I do like my reading hot, hot, hot! ;-)
morticiaknight@gmail.com
Maybe the reviewer was unhappy with Geoff allowing Sarah to climax before giving her permission. Whatever their problem, it was plenty hot for me to give it at least 4 flames.
Would love to win the antholgy & read the rest of the story.
drainbamaged.gyzmo at gmail.com
wow that was great book concept and then then i would love to read and blog on it and then i love the way you can do the books and then now to worry about stuff

You will be surprise how many likes the book but they are just not the ones who reviewed it. Cheer up put a smile on your face and say..I KNOW it's good. susan Leech garysue@dejazzd.com
