I love Andrea Speed's books and when I heard that a new series was debuting at the end of October at new publisher, Riptide Publishing, I just had to read it.
Pretty Monsters is one hilarious, short, horror/paranormal story that kicks off Andrea's Josh of the Damned series there. I do have to stress that if you are looking for a longer type story then this isn't it. It's a short fifteen pages and in those pages, it packs quite a punch.
Josh is working the night shift at the local Quik Mart and thinking his new job is going to be boring....well it was until a hell vortex opens right in the parking lot. Now as well as normal, everyday humans popping in for munchies, you got an occasional zombie (who BTW loves burritos for some odd reason), demons and other creatures of the night you only saw in movies. When the 'Hot Guy' customer drops in one night, Josh is smitten even if he has no idea if he should be afraid of him or want to lick every inch of this monster. When Josh finds out that his crush likes him too, Josh has to figure out if he should be happy or worried that this one may want him for dinner and not in a good way.
The set up of this new series by Andrea Speed is one I highly enjoyed. It was funny, had a nice horror vibe going on that didn’t make me want to toss my cookies or hide behind the couch in fear and I fell in love with the story itself.I really enjoyed Josh. He has a job that just got more interesting and scarier on top of it all. His narration of the story was what kept me interested and plus the sparks that fly between ‘Hot Guy’ and him was just icing on the cake, in my opinion. The writing was tight, storyline moved quickly and you are left at the end racing to the computer to see when book 2 comes out.
Pretty Monsters takes the normal monsters we see in movies and read in books and gives them a twist (junk food addicted monsters anyone?) in this newest story from Andrea Speed. I can not wait to read the next installment of Josh of the Damned just so I can see if that Hot Guy Monster finally reels in Josh or not.
My Rating for Personal Monsters: 4 Stars

Reading some of Andy's tweets for follow-up monsters in the series has been fun too. =)
I can tell you we have a Yeti/Sasquatch ... and a mustache. Not together! Separate entities. :D
