Talking with Riya Aarini

Tell us about your latest book, who are the main character’s and what can we expect when we pick it up?

The main characters in Licensed to Rear are Mila Winston, a smart, no-nonsense elementary school teacher, and Peter Losor, an unscrupulous “entrepreneur” who defies Mila every step of the way. Readers who pick up this satirical novel can expect loads of laughs as well as a thought-provoking storyline. The story involves four couples who strive to earn a parental license that allows them the privilege of raising children.

Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

I came up with the hook first and then wove the various characters into the story.

Which of your own characters would you like to have lunch with?

I’d enjoy having a nice lunch with His Excellency President Eloney Ben Resz, who also presides over the Coolbeensian courts as judge. He created the law mandating that would-be parents earn a license prior to having children. Eloney is a compassionate yet quirky character, and I’d love to pick his brain on what led him to create such a ground-breaking law. Of course, he’d say it’s to protect the well-being of children and families.

Tell us about what you are reading at the moment or anticipate reading in the future? Any favorite authors you enjoy reading in your spare time?

I’m reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It’s a lovely story full of laughs and wit and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I like reading authors like these two witty British ones. I am looking forward to diving into Christopher Moore’s works.

Which of your own books would you like to live in?

I wouldn’t mind living in the world of Licensed to Rear. It’s a unique place with compassionate laws that exist to serve all its citizens, from the youngest to the eldest. The most noble ideals, like tolerance, love, compassion, respect, and kindness, are the foundations of this society. People are happy living in this world and flourish. It’s a world unlike any other.

What do you do when you have free time?

I read books like Good Omens or think about my next book.

How do you approach character development in your stories? Do you have any specific techniques or methods that you find particularly effective?

I develop my characters by focusing on their inner thought processes and feelings. I place myself in their shoes and discover how they act, what they say, and how they feel.

What do you believe sets your writing apart from others in your genre, and why should readers choose to read your books?

My books are unique and quirky. If readers enjoy being transported to far-fetched worlds mixed with absurdity and idealism, then read my books!

Can you discuss any upcoming projects or books that you’re currently working on? What can readers expect from your future works?

Readers can expect an equal amount of absurdity and humor in my future books.

Excerpt Two:

“He’s seven, barely getting started,” Jason retorted. “And for life? Are you kidding me?”

“Well, we have to look closely at the defendant’s conduct and determine if it unequivocally led to a violation of the plaintiff’s Fifth Amendment rights.”

“What was that right again?”

With a heavy sigh, Mila shook her head. “Jason, you should know it by now. It’s Friday, and you had three days to memorize the entire Bill of Rights.”

He ran his hand through his hair. “Yeah, but—”

“No excuses, Jace. We’ve got to prepare if we’re going to be licensed parents.” She put her hand on his thigh and gave it a light push. “Anyway, the Fifth Amendment states that kids have the right to live in a make-believe world for as long as they wish.” She dropped her tablet onto her lap. “For sure, per Coolbeensian law, this kid’s right was violated.”

Jason jerked his head back. “How so? Kids at some point realize there’s no Santa Claus.”

“But at age seven, he had the right to be inspired by the magical world of Santa and other legendary beings. I mean, it’s just plain wrong that the father’s irresponsible blurt led him to no longer believe in the Tooth Fairy too. These figures add so much joy and wonder to a child’s life. The father had no right to take that joy away from his son so soon.”

She crossed her arms. “It’s just not sensitive parenting.”

“Eh, I disagree,” Jason argued, cocking his head. “In a couple years’ time he’d have learned the truth anyway, from friends and even teachers.”

Mila flung her neck back. “Ugh, I’d never tell my fourth graders that Santa doesn’t exist.” Her eyes grew big. “Some still believe.”
