“I’M GOING,” Marti told Susan after he’d changed out of
something interesting and into the clothes for the meeting. “What?” he asked as
she looked him over. “I knew the clothes were wrong. I should have worn the
planet shirt.”
“Blue balls aren’t going to impress this guy. He’s already
got them,” she retorted.
“Everyone’s a comedian,” he told her, looking down at
himself. “Is it the shoes?”
Susan shook her head. “Honey, it’s the hair. You can tone
down the clothes all you want, but the pink hair is a dead giveaway. Just be
yourself, and maybe this money-grubbing tightwad won’t quite know what hit
him.” She gave him a hug, and he hurried out the door and down the street
toward the rental office three blocks away.
Marti didn’t know quite what to expect. Maybe a combination
of grandeur meets Scrooge and Marley. His mind ran in a number of directions,
but he wouldn’t have picked an office with seventies paneling, burnt-orange
shag carpeting, and big-eyed prints on the walls where they’d probably hung
since the paneling had been installed. Scrooge and Marley it was, then,
disco-style.
“Can I help you?” a woman asked as she looked up from a desk
that might have been in the same place since the carpet had been laid. She was
about sixty, with glasses that hung around her neck on a beaded string. The
tarnished nameplate on the desk read Doris.
“I called to make an appointment to talk about the rent on
the building on Prospect that houses the Flower Basket,” he said as
professionally as he could.
She looked him over, then leaned over the desk. Marti braced
himself for a retort, but then she smiled. “I love the shoes, honey,” she
whispered. “Nice touch. You’re going to need all the tiger you can muster.”
“Thanks,” he said, and she checked her computer.
“Have a seat. Mr. D is in there with his son and on the
phone, but he’s talking to his wife, so he should be done soon.” She rolled her
eyes, and Marti wondered if that was a good thing or not. “Don’t worry, they’ll
probably soften him up for you.”
Marti took a seat on one of the molded-resin chairs in
avocado green, folded his hands in his lap, and did his best not to fidget.
Raised voices drifted in from behind the closed door—male voices, if he wasn’t
mistaken. Doris continued her work at the computer, paying it no attention.
