Thanks for hosting me today, Dawn.
This time two years ago, I had writing plans that
didn’t entail re-pubbing my entire backlist.
I hadn’t planned to become an indie or hybrid author either.
Life has a habit of sending curve balls, and never
just one, but a whole bunch of them.
Fast forward to present day, and I’m well into the
swing of being my own publisher—apart from two co-written stories with Lou
Sylvre as we decided it would be easier with the royalty split going through a
publisher. It’s been quite the learning curve.
I’m very thankful for my writing community as I wouldn’t have attempted
this without their support, and willingness to answer all sorts of questions as
I worked through the process step by step and took copius notes.
In late 2019 I went from being an author with a 13
book back list to having nothing out there to show for all my work. Eep!
In hindsight, though, it’s turned out to be a huge
opportunity to take control of my work, re-edit and re-cover my older books,
and write what I want to without having to worry about whether it will be
published or not.
Starting with my New Zealand set time travel short
novella, Slow Dreaming, in December
2019, I now have 7 books out in the world with another 5 planned this
year. Two of those forthcoming 2021
releases are new books (already written).
After
that I’ll be focusing on getting my portal fantasy series, Hidden Places, and my high fantasy with Dragons series, Dragons of Astria republished and
finally finished. All of the existing
books in those series will be revamped, reedited, and recovered. Plus 3-4 of those will be new. I say 3-4 as I’m splitting a very large one
in two and adding half a book to the new second part of it. I’ve also already written three quarters of
one of the new books so I have a head start.
Wish me luck! I’m looking forward to revisiting these
characters again and playing in their worlds.
You can find the links for the books I’ve already
published on my bibliography page on Drops of Ink - https://annebarwell.wordpress.com/blibliography/. I’ll be updating that page as I
republish/publish my books.
Bio and Links:
Anne
Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand.
She shares her home with Kaylee: a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced
that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to
date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning.
In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in
English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music
teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member
of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley
Orchestra.
She is an avid reader across a wide range
of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can
be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best
enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the
concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for
other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand
Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ.
Anne’s books
have received honourable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one
of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow
Awards. She has also been nominated three times in the Goodreads M/M
Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—twice for Best Fantasy, once for Best Historical,
and once for All-Time Favourite M/M Author.
