Let's Take a moment with author Pene Hensen:
What started your interest in writing?
I think I’ve always been interested in
the ways words go together. I wrote a lot of poetry as a child. I still have
some of it. It’s sweet and overwrought and pretty awful - all about unicorns
and the environment and the death penalty and mental illness.
Writing prose came more slowly. I
started for the same reason many people do. There were stories I wanted to read
and couldn’t find. I was interested in people’s confusing motivations and dear
little habits. I wanted to read about imperfect people who are loving and brave
and don’t get fixed but do have a happily ever after. And I wanted to read
about beautiful places.
But it wasn’t until recently that I
became interested in really creating a narrative, not just a series of pretty,
thoughtful words strung together.
If zombies attacked what kind of
supplies would you want?
A
land and water vehicle of some kind
A
cross bow
Someone
who could use a crossbow
Some
nets and shovels and building materials to make traps
A
whole lot of books titled: how to survive a zombie apocalypse
If you could sit down with any author
dead or alive who would it be?
Maybe Jane Austen, because she is at
once funny and cutting and deeply kind and I think I’d be amazed. But I’m
honestly not sure what she’d think of me.
Do you keep a notebook near your for
when new ideas pop into your head?
Either a notebook or at least my phone.
Because often I’ll be walking and I’ll think “Oh! Ollie sends postcards home!”
or “Maybe Claudie grows plants on her tiny balcony”. At the moment my notes read:
·
The way she drinks water
·
Braids
·
Coconut lube
·
Moths
If you write a series do you reread your
previous books before you begin the new one?
n/a so far sadly J
Is there anything you wish to say to
your readers?
It was so interesting getting inside the
minds of these young boys and girls. I love them dearly, but
And if they’re colleagues or parents
from my kid’s school then “you can skip the sex scenes”?

Birkstrom have been inseparable since they met as kids surfing the North Shore.
Now they live with their best friends in a pulled-together family, sharing life
and the saltwater in their veins. Tai’s spent years setting aside his feelings
for Ollie, but when Ollie’s pro surfing aspirations come to fruition, their
steady world shifts. Is the relationship worth risking everything for a chance
at something terrifying and beautiful and altogether new?

Excerpt:
Across from them, one of the Brazilians plays guitar. Ollie
doesn’t recognize the song even when a couple of others sing along. The beach
is wider and the sand finer than on the North Shore, but every beach is a
little like home. Ollie misses the Blue House; he misses the surf and the palms
and the shoreline he knows so well. He misses Jaime and Sunny and Hannah.
Still, though he’s as far from home as he’s ever been, Ollie’s comfortable.
These are his people, too. He leans back on his arms and looks up into the
dark.
He’s watched the night sky since he was a little kid, but
down here in the Southern Hemisphere he doesn’t recognize the hundreds upon
hundreds of stars. The Southern Cross is up there. Ollie tries to orient
himself.
Tai shifts toward him, then looks up and follows Ollie’s
gaze. The warmth of Tai’s body settles into Ollie’s heart, grounds him. Ollie
leans into him a little, and their arms brush to the elbow. The contact simmers
in the air between them.
Unexpectedly, Ollie knows what he wants. “Come back to the
hotel,” he says quietly to Tai. He pitches his voice low. It hums across the
tiny space between them. No one else can hear him over the pounding surf and the
sound of the music. It’s easy to be bold in the dark of a beach where Ollie’s
never been before. He’s shocked by that same boldness.
