You have written several stories about vampires. What draws you to these characters? What dynamics are added to a story through the use of vampires? Do you have plans for more stories in the series ?
Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated with vampire lore – and the way it can be changed to fit a storyline. I think the Frank Langella interpretation of a movie Dracula was the one I enjoyed most. He was a very sensuous vampire, and while still a cold monster had a certain allure. My vampires, like Marcus in ‘My Vampire and I’, tend to be easier to deal with – when they like you. The latest release was to be the last book in the series – ‘Blood Lure’ –But I have been persuaded to write one more by some readers, so I’m working on that now.
You’ve written a couple of Christmas stories Did you enjoy writing a story with a Christmas theme?
Christmas stories are a challenge. I couldn’t quite get Christmas, Santa and erotica on the same page. But once I got the characters I wanted down, they sort of took off. Of course, it helps bringing two hot men together for a passionate love affair. My first story, A Present Christmas was definitely influenced by just about every classic Christmas story out there, while the second A Special Christmas was pure romance - a lonely guy, a log cabin, a chance encounter…
You have numerous books available in paperback and several current releases available in ebook format. What advantages does ebook publishing offer an author?
It’s great to see your work out there so quickly and available to avid readers of this format. I know lots of people who prefer a printed version, but ebooks fill a need that grows larger every year. I’m very happy to be a part of this growing industry.
You have written books within several different genres including paranormal, western, mystery and contemporary. Is any genre particularly difficult or one that you enjoy more than others?
I really enjoy writing about relationships – the genre doesn’t matter much to me as long as I can bring to the pages characters that the reader can relate to. I’m always heartened when a reader writes to me and says – “I love so-and-so – please write more about him – or them.”
What is your favorite published story? What is your most popular published story?
My first – A Portrait of Phillip, will always have a special place in my heart. I think it has been the most successful print book, along with ‘A Deadly Deception’, one of the Nick Fallon stories. As for the ebooks, I think ‘Ride ‘em Cowboy’ has been the most successful.
Which of your stories would make a great movie? Who’d play the lead roles?
I’m writing a screenplay for ‘A Portrait of Phillip’ at the moment. I think it would make a great movie or a mini-series with the other books. Honestly? I’m not crazy about straight actors playing gay men, so the obvious Top 10 movie stars wouldn’t cut it for me. I’d be happier with lesser known actors who could convince me they understand the gay sensibility. Mindyew, I’d make an exception for Hugh Jackman!
When you start writing, do you already have the story plotted out or do you let the characters dictate what will happen?
That’s a fifty-fifty shot. I have the plot somewhat in mind – but a couple of times the characters have led me to a different ending from the one I thought I wanted!
Do you draw inspiration for your characters from real life?
There again, yes and no. Several different people can make up the personality traits of a single character, but I sometimes use actual events from life – mine and people I know. For instance, I wrote a story about life on a cruise ship - Cruising - I worked on a cruise ship years ago, so some of what’s in the story actually happened – you’ll have to guess what is fact and what is fiction!
What story haven’t you written yet but would like to? Is there anything holding you back from writing it?
There have to be dozens of stories I still want to write – if anything holds me back it’s time constraints. There really are not enough hours in a day for all I want to write about. Phil, my partner, sometimes has to drag me kicking and screaming away from the computer.
Do you have a system for writing? Do you track word count or write a certain number of hours per day? Do you use music and playlists for inspiration?
I can be really erratic until I become immersed in the story. Once that happens I can dash off a couple of chapters in as many hours. I love it when the story takes off and my fingers can hardly keep up with what I’m thinking and writing.
When did you start writing? Did you always know you wanted to be “a writer”?
I started writing seriously about ten years ago. Before then I had dabbled from time to time but never brought anything to completion. In my teens I was fascinated by Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi stories and wrote a couple of novellas heavily influenced by him – except that the heroes were all in love with one another – not something publishers wanted to know about then!
An American doctor meets an Australian soldier in the wilderness of Darfur, and soon their passion burns hotter than the desert sun.
Doctor Mark Hamilton working for Doctors Who Care International and stationed at a refugee clinic in Darfur, never thought he'd meet and fall in love with someone like Sergeant Major Jack -Boomer- Caruthers in the middle of the strife torn territory—nor could he ever imagine being sold as a sex slave to an exiled Prince!
Fortunately for Mark, it's Jack to the rescue. The two men make a daring escape into the desert and are picked up by Jack's team, but Mark ignores Jack's warning not to return to the clinic, with dire results.
Once again made captive by the slave traders, Mark can only cling to the hope that Jack's love for him is strong enough to face the dangers he will encounter in the vast deserts of Somalia.
A PORTRAIT OF ANDREW by J.P. BOWIE
A holly jolly Christmas with friends is all artist Peter Brandon and his private investigator partner Jeff Stevens expect when they visit their buddies, Andrew and David, in New York City. All that changes when a party guest ends up murdered and Andrew is considered to be the prime suspect.
The situation worsens when the murdered man's wife accuses Andrew of trying to persuade her husband to have a gay affair with him. It's up to Jeff and a sympathetic NYPD detective, Nick Fallon, to try to clear Andrew's name. They are, at times, aided and then hindered by Peter's erratic psychic abilities-or disabilities, as he calls them- that eventually lead them to a powerful and unexpected showdown when the real killer is exposed.
Along the way, new friendships are made and tested-and one is irrevocably destroyed by lies and denial. This is another fast-paced page turner from J.P. Bowie that will keep you guessing all the way to the end-and perhaps, beyond...
