Talking with Xavier Axelson

Talking with author Xavier Axelson

Let’s talk public relations for just a minute…I live in Los Angeles, a city where people call themselves a publicist if they are friends with enough bouncers that can move their entourage to the front of the line.  I have seen this more times, than I care to admit.

Having worked as a fashion publicist in Hollywood I quickly learned to distinguish between the real and the fake, and believe me there is more fake than real.  There are even fakes among the “reals” if that makes any sense.  These are people who are genuinely publicists who are still faking their credentials to get whatever it is that they need.  A very well known PR guru ran the PR firm that I worked for and it was not unusual for people to pass by my desk and hear me say that I was his interior designer, stylist, etc to get him free shit, all at his request of course.  I was just starting out and knew that I had better think of a way to get him whatever it was that he was asking for and so I got creative and realized very quickly that thinking outside of the box was a gift and an asset in a town of glammed up phonies.

Now, I could go on and on with stories that would turn people green with disgust; meetings where said PR guru threw pieces of candy at us while fellow publicists, assistants, etc dove for them like seals…but that’s for another blog.

I am a relative newcomer to the M/M erotica scene and the journey has been an amazing one.  I often find myself using all the skills I’ve acquired as a publicist for one very important client…myself!  I have been told that being a publicist is just in my blood, I am always thinking as a publicist.  I am always thinking of ways to connect A to B to C; meaning, how do you get your writing to that next level.

YOU should also be thinking like a publicist…and if your not you should learn.  Grab a book on public relations; believe me after 4 years and two degrees I’ve read most of them and there are some great ones out there.  A couple even written by the person I worked for!

A couple of tips:  Anytime someone posts something in one of the many Yahoo Romance related groups see who’s interviewing who, who’s guest blogging where and who is throwing what event when…because ladies and gentlemen…anywhere they are blogging, interviewing,  reviewing, etc is a potential place for you to be doing the same.  Start a Media List that includes your dream media outlets, contact each one of those places, and start a database with who the proper contact person is at each place.  Also keep an eye out for what’s being posted on Facebook…if so and so just got a great review somewhere bookmark that page for your next round of review request emails.

I could give you more tips but then I’d have to send the hounds after you and yes I do have hounds well more like a very ferocious coven of black cats…either way I must withdraw from further revelation.

However, do feel free to check me out at my website and you will not want to miss what I have coming up in April.  Look for a Father’s Day Inspired Horror/Paranormal Romance…oh yes I did!  I will also be featuring one of our senses each week in my sex advice column over at examiner.com

Love, sex
