Excerpt 1

“I love that brain of yours, but don’t think so much right now Emmaline.” His next kiss was softer, sweeter. The warm rumble of his voice pulled me right out of my head. “Be here with me, beautiful. Just feel.”

Don’t think. Feel. The voice in my head echoed what he said.

In an effort to do just that, I barely lifted my head to kiss him again. My eyelids fell closed and I poured all of my focus into feeling Tryn. The softness of his lips contrasted with the roughness of his beard. The heat of him and the breadth of his body. My hands landed on his back and went searching. When I found the hem of his T-shirt, I dipped under it.

Oh, I did not expect his skin to be so soft. The muscles underneath were hard, but also moved with a fluid grace that I never wanted to stop feeling. I already knew he gave great hugs, but to feel him wrap around me skin-to-skin would be on another level.

As if reading my mind, Tryn made off with his shirt when our kisses broke apart for air. When he lowered to me again, his fingers drifted under my shirt slowly, giving me every opportunity to stop him.

I didn’t. I kissed him harder, molding my body to his. A strong hand lifted me a few inches from the bed, just enough to get my shirt and bra off.

“Fucking perfect,” Tryn murmured along my collarbone before kissing lower.

My gaze found the ceiling. Any other time, I’d be in my head again, wondering if I looked weird topless, if my chest was smaller than what he preferred. But what I was quickly figuring out? Tryn knew how to make a girl feel.

Deadly Sins

by January Bain

GENRE: Contemporary Romance (Mafia)

Book one in the Irish Mafia Kings series

Blood for blood. Her family killed my brother, so I’ll take their princess.

I’m Quinn Lyons, Irish Mafia King, a man known for getting what he wants, and I want her, Aria Byrne. I’m going to make her pay for her family’s sins.

I didn’t intend to snatch her from her fancy engagement party, just kill her rival mobster father, but plans change in the heat of the moment. Now she’s mine to claim and possess, because what better bargaining chip could a Mafia boss have than the beloved princess of a rival family?

Until I decide I don’t ever want to let her go.

Excerpt Four:

Aria

“Are you okay, Aunt Sofie?” I got up and rushed to greet my aunt coming in the bedroom door, then hugged her tight. Her frame felt thinner, frailer since I’d come home. What had she endured these past years? I’d asked on numerous occasions, but she’d kept a stiff lip, only assuring me she was all right.

“I’m fine, just checking that you’ll be ready on time? You know what a stickler your father is for punctuality.”

“Did he hurt you?” I asked, pulling her farther into my bedroom. She sat on the end of my princess-style bed, her mouth pulled into a tight smile.

“I can handle your father. You look beautiful, Aria. You’ll make our family proud. You grew up so much during your years studying in Ireland.” She reached up and touched my cheeks, her fingers cool and dry. “You’ve become a young woman. I miss the tomboy, the one always playing in the dirt and making mud pies with happy faces drawn in with a stick. But the time comes when women must put all that behind them. Your time came sooner than I would have liked.”

She said the words apologetically, her soft brown eyes pleading for understanding.

I glanced at the vanity mirror over the dresser. I didn’t see beautiful so much as paler than normal. My long locks were restrained in a sleek French twist, courtesy of my aunt’s instructions. And after the altercation with my father, how could I refuse her?

The hair stylist had managed a miracle though. My hair had as much a mind of its own as I did, though my rebellion had to be sent underground for the foreseeable future. Like rapids during whitewater rafting, I was only one spill away from disaster. Remember what’s at stake, Aria. Who could forget the heavy hand my father had on all our necks? I suddenly wanted to tear all the annoying pins from my head, let it down, not feel the pressure of what I had to do tonight.

“I’ll meet you downstairs.” Aunt Sofie sighed before kissing my cheek and leaving my bedroom, her footsteps silent on the thick rug.

I got to my feet and went back to sit in front of the vanity, where I picked up the fat makeup brush and rubbed it over the pot of color, then applied it to the apples of my cheeks. If I had no color, at least I could hide behind a mask. Yes. More mascara and darker lipstick. There. I didn’t look like myself, which was the point and should make this easier, as if this was happening to someone else. Because the real Aria, the one I’d finally discovered at art school in Limerick, would never be celebrating her engagement to a man she didn’t love. That she barely even knew. No way in hell.

Behind the Scenes with Kelli Wilkins: Loving a Wild Stranger

Behind the Scenes: Loving a Wild Stranger (A Historical Romance)

By Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

This “Behind the Scenes” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each blog, I’ll talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book. Warning: Blogs may contain spoilers.

Hi everyone,

Loving a Wild Stranger is one of my favorite romance novels… it’s also the first romance novel I ever wrote. A long time ago when I was taking writing classes, I told my instructor that an idea for a story had popped into my head, but I didn’t know what to do with it. I was writing short horror fiction at the time, and the idea wasn’t a horror story.

The premise seemed simple: a young woman runs away from home and impersonates a stranger’s mail order bride. My writing teacher said, “That’s a romance. Write it and see what happens.”

So I wrote the book… and discovered I liked writing romances (and I was pretty good at it). From there, other romance ideas came to me, and I wrote those books, too. That’s how my romance-writing career began. All from one idea.

One of the things that inspired me to write Loving a Wild Stranger was the interaction between the characters, Luther and Michelle. They come from very different backgrounds and at first don’t get along at all. Michelle is an independent, outspoken young woman used to getting her way in the “civilized” world, and Luther is a lonely “mountain man” looking for love.

As you can imagine, they clash over the course of the story and have several major blowups. When Michelle agrees to the “marriage” arrangement for a month, it raises a lot of questions: Does she truly care for Luther? Can she live in the wilderness? Will she stay after the month is over? How long can she keep up her charade?

Deception and trust are two main themes in the book. Michelle is lying to Luther about her past, her true identity, why she’s on the run… and Luther is keeping his own secrets from Michelle. When these bombshells are revealed, it nearly tears them apart. Can they ever trust each other completely?

When I wrote the book, I did a lot of research on the setting and what life was like back then (how people lived, what they ate, how they dressed) to contrast Michelle’s “city” way of life with Luther’s rugged existence.

I also researched trappers, fur traders, and Native American culture of the time and region to build authentic details into Luther’s lifestyle. I wanted to pull readers into Luther’s world, so they could experience the story and events as Michelle sees them.

And I’m proud to say that I succeeded! One reviewer had this to say:

This book has the potential to be made into a movie. It took over my life. I ignored everyone and everything. Nothing was going to interrupt my time with Luther. Sigh…Luther, what a dreamy hero. I envied the heroine, Michelle. Loving a Wild Stranger reminded me of the 1970s T.V. show, Grizzly Adams – one of my favorite childhood television shows.

I recommend this book and will be keeping it on my keeper shelf. I was thoroughly entertained throughout the story. I would love to switch places with Michele and spend the rest of my days with Luther if I could. I would recommend reading Loving a Wild Stranger while relaxing by a lake!"

That “Grizzly Adams” feel was exactly what I was going for!

I love Luther and Michelle. They’re my “first couple” and no matter how many romances I write, their love story will always have a special place in my heart.

I hope you’ll fall in love with them and their story as much as I did. Loving a Wild Stranger is a fun blend of love and adventure in the wilderness.

Here’s the summary:

Loving a Wild Stranger

A woman running from her past… straight into the arms of an untamed man

In a moment of desperation, Kathleen Stanton flees her pampered life in Kingston, New York and ends up stranded in a small town in the Michigan Territory. Out of money and forced to rely on her instincts, she impersonates a handsome stranger’s mail-order bride.

Committed to her deception, Kathleen calls herself Michelle and starts her new life with Luther in an isolated cabin in the wilderness. Luther can’t believe his luck when his beautiful bride arrives, but something doesn’t feel right about his new wife. Michelle has terrifying nightmares involving a man named Roger and is reluctant to talk about where she came from.

Luther’s friend, Redfeather visits and tries to convince Luther to send Michelle back east. Distrusting Michelle, he warns Luther that his bride is not what she seems. But Luther is in love with Michelle, and he is harboring a secret of his own—one that might force Michelle to reject him when she learns the truth.

Michelle falls in love with Luther and adapts to her new way of life. Together, they face off against brutal townspeople and overcome harsh living conditions. When they finally give in to their desires and agree to become a proper man and wife, a dark figure from Michelle’s past resurfaces and threatens to destroy everything.

Make sure to enter the tour wide giveaway as the author is giving one lucky person a  $25 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Good Dialogue by Benoit Lanteigne

Dialogue plays a large role in defining your characters. After all, most traditional stories feature a lot of talking. The way a character speaks can reveal a lot about them. This is especially true for media like movies and TV shows, though less so for books since books offer more alternative options. That’s not to say only dialogue defines the characters in a movie, far from it.

A major difficulty with dialogue is making each character “sound” different. It’s all too easy to fail here and have everyone speak in a way that feels the same. This lessens your character’s uniqueness and appeal. For this video, I’ll concentrate on tips to avoid this issue.

Frankly, I struggled with this for a long time. If I reread earlier drafts of The Cyborg’s Crusade, some characters feel flat in part because their dialogue isn’t very good. The biggest example I can think of is Janice Ricdeau, the sister of Rose, the winged woman. Looking back, whenever she spoke, she felt like a talking head that sounded like a watered-down version of Rose. Part of this was because I didn’t have a good grasp on the character yet and what made her unique. This wasn’t only dialogue related, but they needed work, no question. I put a lot of work into Janice, and it paid off. She went from one of the most boring characters to one of my favorites. One thing is for sure, she doesn’t sound like Rose anymore. All this highlights one important thing: It’s hard to write great dialogue for a character if you don’t know and understand them. If a particular character’s dialogue is giving you grief, maybe you need to figure out who they are more.

Like everything else about a character, their speech should reflect who they are. This means that their dialogue should reflect things like their personality and background. As a first point, let’s consider vocabulary. Someone who grew up poor and dropped out of school early will probably have a less diverse vocabulary than someone with an English degree. Try to determine the level of language mastery of each character. Restrictions can fuel creativity. Knowing what you can’t do if you want believable dialogue can force you to vary the characters’ dialect with little effort.

Another question is how polite a character is by nature. A professional, high-strung type of person should be more formal than a free-spirited soul. Having a very formal person interact with someone who is the opposite can lead to fun banters. Also, the formality aspect can play along with other traits of the character. For instance, imagine a character with poor language mastery/vocabulary trying to sound formal and smart. How they accomplish this can again be interesting.

Now for a question that might be a little controversial: Does your character swear? Some feel swearing is lazy and unesthetic. It’s up to you if you want to use swearing or not. To me, swearing is normal human behavior, whether or not we like it. Some people I know swear so much without even meaning to, I consider it part of their personalities! (Hello Dad!). No, I’m not mentioning him for any reason, just thought I’d say hi.

Anyway, the point is I’m ok with swearing if it fits with who a character is and not just for shock value. For instance, I wouldn’t have someone super religious swear in public unless something major happened. Even then, I’d consider it twice before doing it.

Another easy possibility is accents and dialects related to the region a character is from. Different places often speak differently and that can differentiate your characters during dialog. If you do this, BE CAREFUL! You don’t want them to sound like offensive stereotypes. When in doubt, avoid accents.

Also, don’t forget body language. Not everything a human being says is through words. Researching common body language can give good ideas on how to communicate subtle information to your readers. Sure, this isn’t strictly dialogue, but it goes hand in hand with it.

As a final tip, take who the character is talking to into consideration. Most of them wouldn’t express themselves the same way with their best friend, a parent, a perfect stranger, a bully, someone they hate, and so on. Think about how each of your various characters plays off against each other. That can help make the dialogues more varied and serve as subtle character development.

The Cyborg's Crusade - Day of the Deus Ex Machina

by Benoit Lanteigne

GENRE: Science Fiction

How did it come to this? My life used to be so simple. Back then, I hated it; I found it boring. Let me tell you: boring’s good. Boring’s great! I should’ve been thankful…

It was supposed to be a date like any other for James Hunter, a simple convenience store clerk. Nothing more than watching a movie in the town of Moncton. A place as unknown and unimportant as he considered his own existence to be. And yet, while walking to a cinema, James teleports to another world. There, a hostile crowd surrounds him, including various mutants with strange deformities.

Before he can even gather his wits or make a dash for it, a lone ally presents herself in the form of a winged woman named Rose. An important cultural figure in the country where James appeared, she offers him both protection and a home.

Soon, James learns that this new world is divided by a cold war. On one side is Nirnivia, home to Rose. The other, Ostark, led by a mysterious cyborg. James is unaware that the cyborg has him in his crosshairs, thinking of him as the Deus Ex Machina that will end the war in his favor.

But, the cyborg is far from the only potential threat to James. Soon after his arrival, BRR, a terrorist organisation, kidnaps him.

What would a rogue group out for revenge seeking to turn the cold war hot want with someone like James? Is there anyone also aware of this other world who will try to find him? Or is he on his own? If so, how is he supposed to escape? If that's even an option...

The book will be $0.99 during the tour.

Excerpt Three:

Though initially shocked by the vehicle storming at them, the crowd soon recuperated. They glanced at each other and brandished their fists at the offenders. A few gave chase, but on foot they stood little chance of overtaking the pair. One of the chasers yelled, “Hey, it’s that Wrathchild traitor bitch helping the human asshole.”

Not concentrating on the road, Wrathchild offered her companion a side glance. “Don’t listen. Had veterinarians do test.” She smirked. “Ain’t no female dog.”

Despite their superior speed, she opted for caution and swerved into a small street. James exhaled as he hoped the retreat cut the hunt short. Then a soaring bottle grazed his ear. It shattered on the asphalt with a chink. A rock followed, and next a banana-shaped fruit of all things. The projectiles missed their mark, yet James’s muscles tensed up. He mumbled to himself in an attempt to calm his nerves. His worries proved futile. They outpaced the flock, who vanished in the distance in a second. Before he could relax, a rumbling sound arose from behind.

James gulped. He deduced the implications. Terrified, his brain ordered him not to look, but the temptation ended up too strong. Out of breath, he took a glimpse. A bare-chested thug covered in tattoos had mounted his own bike and raced after them. A lone hand steered; the other wielded a club. The message seemed obvious: he’d prefer to risk an accident than not to pummel them.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

So, my name is Benoit Lanteigne and I’m a French Canadian (outside of Quebec) who’s trying to write in English. That can be tricky. I’m a computer programmer and I enjoy it. I see many inspiring writers who hate their jobs and hope to quit someday, but that’s not my case. Mostly, I’ve worked on websites and web applications.

Back in school, I enjoyed writing and according to my teachers and classmates; I had a talent for it. Well, not so much for grammar and spelling, but they liked my stories. Once I went to university, I dropped writing as a hobby. There were other things I wanted to focus on, such as my career. Then, in the early 2000s, around 2006 I’d say, I had a flash of inspiration. At first, it was a single character: a winged woman with red hair. I didn’t even know who she was, but the image stuck with me. From there, I began figuring out details about her origins and her world, but I only started writing for real in 2009.

It’s been roughly 10 years now, and it’s not yet finished. That’s in part because I write in my spare time, and in part because the scope of the project is huge. Maybe too much so. Still, I’m getting close to the point where I could release something. The question is what’s next? Self-publishing? Attempt traditional publishing? Nothing? I don’t know the answer yet, I’m trying to figure it out. Frankly, sharing my writing is difficult for me, and whatever I end up doing, as long as I make it available to people I consider the experience a victory no matter what comes out of it.

The Nick Before Christmas

by K.L. Brady

GENRE:   Romance

The book will be on sale for $0.99.

Will an angel's dire warning, a quest to discover a second act by Christmas Eve, and a touch of Christmas Magic lead Nickie Wright back to the one that got away?

Nickie Wright is ready to celebrate the big 5-0 for Christmas in July, but a hot flash leads her to a sobering revelation: her life has hit rock bottom. Her successes--the home and the car--feel empty. Her vision board has been a waste of time, her job is unfulfilling, and she's mulling over a proposal from Smith, who she's not sure she likes. The best day of her life spirals into the worst. During a near-death experience, a meeting with her guardian angel presents Nickie with an ultimatum - either go to heaven or return to Earth and find her second act by Christmas Eve. If she fails, her future's bleak -- her life will be filled with days no better than her worst.

Her second act sets her on a collision path with Evan Goodman, the man who makes her content, and Jordan Devlin, the first love who drives her crazy. She's torn between two worlds--contentment and safety, passion and excitement.

Time is running out for Nickie.

She only has from Christmas in July until Christmas Eve to find her calling, follow her dreams, and figure out which romantic interest will help Nickie embrace the best of herself.

The Nick Before Christmas is the perfect romantic comedy to help you find your calling and renew your faith. It delivers unforgettable moments of self-discovery and romance. It's an enchanting story to fill your heart with joy this Christmas.

Excerpt Three:

Sasha approached…and based on the sound of footsteps, she wasn't alone.

"Nickie? Uh….You have company?"

"Who?"

Into the threshold stepped Evan…and Jordan, both carrying sizeable brown shopping bags scented with contents that smelled a whole lot like dinner.

Evan ghosted her for weeks, dropped off the radar. J. Dev blew her off and was off parading with Ava, or so she thought. Now both stood in her living room, in the flesh, at the same time. She had no idea how to handle this. Nickie had never been a juggler so two potential courters in her presence, in her house, wasn't a situation she expected to face. She couldn't have orchestrated this cluster if she tried.

Their faces sapped the air out of her lungs. Laying the blame on Sasha wasn't an option.

Her stomach growled, reminding of her greatest need in the moment. If worse comes to worst, Nickie pledged to keep the dinner and cannoli...and dump the two unexpected guests.

"Jordan, Evan…what a surprise to welcome you…both…in my living room…right now,” Nickie said, her eye volleying between them so as not to give one more attention than the other.

Evan glanced at Jordan without speaking a single word, and Jordan returned the favor. She suspected each was eager to learn what the other had to say.
